RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY

Here's another snippet of the talk, BOONE-My Kind of Town, that I, the Kornerman, gave at the Boone County Historical Society in October.

++++++++++++

In the 1980's, I received national exposure. So, that would have to be one of the prime highlights of my working career.

For 30 years, 1970-2000, I was the spokesperson for the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

The IHSAA, of course, sets rules and regulations in the various sports programs for Iowa's high school student-athletes. A major job also is determining state tournament formats and, at the completion of the championship events, honoring those teams, players and coaches who have been declared the state's best.

Every state has a similar organization as the IHSAA and all belong to the National Federation of State High School Associations. Each summer, the Federation hosts a week-long conference in a major U.S. city. It gives an opportunity for an exchange of ideas about high school sports activities and how each state governs various challenges in their particular state.

A highlight of the week is the closing banquet and that is the time when new members are selected for the National High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Eight of those years in the 1980's, I, the Kornerman, was selected as the Master of Ceremonies for this prestigious Hall of Fame event.

Normally, there are about 20 new inductees and, traditionally, half of them may be outstanding performers who are well known for their achievements in their home state but, perhaps, are not that well known nationally or internationally.

The other half are new inductees who have succeeded, not only at their state level, but have added honors as collegiate or, perhaps, even as professional performers.

It was my duty to guide the Hall of Fame banquet and do the actual inducting of these athletes, which, of course, required verbally outlining all of their magnificent feats to a crowd of 1,000 or more in attendance.

I'm going to list a few of those that were more "famous." But, you must keep in mind that this was fifty years ago and today's younger people may not have a clue as to who these people were/are and what they accomplished on the national scene.

Inductees during the eight years included golfer Arnold Palmer,  Dallas Cowboy coach Tom Landry, Coach John Wooden who guided numerous UCLA basketball teams to NCAA titles, baseball Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench, NFL quarterbacks Bart Starr of Green Bay and Len Dawson of Kansas City, well known TV sports announcer Pat Summerall, Paul Hornung, Notre Dame Heisman winner and Packer running back, basketball players Lynette Woodard and Cheryl Miller and numerous former Olympic champions in several different events.

This gave me an opportunity to spend time "up close and personal" with these great athletes who favored me with having our picture taken, signing my program and writing some very nice comments about my performance.

A couple side notes......an inductee I didn't mention earlier is one that may be more recognizable today. That would be a very young Kim Mulkey, who is the current LSU women's basketball coach and was Iowa's opponent in the most recent NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four.

Then too, after my eighth year, the officials in charge informed me that, "although we really would like to continue with you as the M.C., some pressure has been applied, after eight years, to give a lady an opportunity to be the M.C." The final result was that the next year, a black lady from Indiana became the M.C. for the banquet.

I must confess, for my very first assignment as M.C., Las Vegas and the Riveria Hotel was the site and I must have been in "shock mode" as I realized that this guy from Boone Iowa  was at a podium and standing on the stage at the famous Rivera.....just a few feet away from the same stage that hosted Sinatra, Dean Martin and the famous "Rat Pack," as well as numerous other musical and dance stars.

As I look back, needless to say, my eight-year run as the host of this national banquet was a "dream come true" for a Boone Iowa guy who has, always and proudly, called Boone Iowa home and has been proud to tell the world about its goodness.

AGAIN......THIS IS "My Kind of Town"

In the December issue of Trail Tales, the Boone County Historical Society President Sue Kruckenberg wrote, "If you missed them (recent speeches by Charles Irwin, Kevin Mungons and Mo Kelley) and would like to view these interesting talks, they are taped; come to the Larry Adams Research Room on the first floor of the History Center and view them."

That's a wonderful opportunity for those who reside close to Boone.

The following is the repeat of a small portion of that speech that I, the Kornerman, delivered at the Society in October.

++++++++++++

I imagine, due to my newspaper, radio, TV and MC experiences, people have asked, "Why do you stay in Boone?" In other words, why not seek more fame and fortune elsewhere?

I have an easy answer to those questions. Why? Why would I risk an unknown opportunity somewhere I'm not familiar with and not knowing anyone I'd be involved with, when, for 75 years, I've had everything I've ever wanted or needed in life right here in Boone, Iowa.?

Certainly, through those years, there have been challenges, large and small here, but, as a community, we've always been able to "circle the wagons" and move forward. That's because this community has always boasted tremendous, positive citizens. Oh sure, there are always some troublemakers. In fact, I see a few in the audience here today (ha) but I won't mention names.

Sure, there are, no doubt, a few Boone citizens who may have misgivings about whether this is their proper destination in life.

I'd like to issue this challenge. When you go home, get out a sheet of paper and pen or pencil and draw a circle of the immediate Boone area. Perhaps 10-12 miles each direction from its downtown Boone radius. Then, write down all the positive things you can think of that are available to us within that circle.

I'll even start you off with some ideas........how about the Ericson Library, Don Williams lake and park, our wonderful hospital, Pufferbilly Days, the Boone and Scenic Valley, McHose and all the other "inside" parks, the Historical Society, Mamie, the Boone Speedway, the Ledges State Park, Ogden Fun Days, the Madrid Labor Day celebration and the community theatre?

How about  DMACC, service clubs, Seven Oaks, three Casey's stores, the airport, the high bridge, golf courses, the schools and churches of various denominations, Dutch Oven Bakery, a variety of eating establishments, the two top grocery chains in Iowa and the brand new pickle ball courts?

I can see some of you in the audience saying, of your favorites, "he's missing this and that one."

Yes, the list is very long and I've just touched a few things that immediately come to memory. I'm sure your list will add many other positive community assets and are welcome additions.

Heck, you can even get a tatoo in Boone.

Just a few short miles away from our downtown, we can access some of the greatest artists in drama, music and sports at Stevens Auditorium, Hilton Coliseum and Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. The world's great orchestra's and choirs, popular plays and contemporary musicians are all available. The collegiate Big 12 athletic teams and players, some of the best in the country, are frequent visitors.

    And don't forget Reiman Gardens.

My family came to this community in the late 1940's and I've been gone just two years of that time, due to military service. I'm so thankful, this was where I landed for good and again, "for 75 years its provided me with everything I've ever wanted or needed and various associations with some of the greatest people ever."

I've been completely blessed and I wouldn't change a thing. This has been and is "My Kind of Town."

1940, WHEN FORMER TOREADORS CAPTAINED BOTH HAWKEYE AND CYCLONE FOOTBALL TEAMS

Another portion of the Kornerman's recent speech at the Boone County Historical Society, ''BOONE-My Kind of Town."

In the long football histories of the State University of Iowa and Iowa State University, Boone is the ONLY Iowa community that can make this boast.
In the 1940 collegiate football season, the captains of BOTH the Hawkeye and Cyclone teams were former Toreadors.
The captain of the Iowa Hawkeye team that season was Mike Enich, BHS-37, and the captain of the Iowa State Cyclone team was Tom Smith, BHS-37.
Both played high school football, side-by-side, at Boone High School, Enich as the fullback and Smith as the quarterback. But, in a strange circumstance, both finished their collegiate careers as outstanding linemen.
At Iowa, Enich began his college career as a sophomore back under Coach Irl Tubbs. But, when Dr. Eddie Anderson took over the Hawkeye coaching position, he moved Enich to tackle, where he became a first team All-Conference and first team All-American player.
You, no doubt, have heard of Nile Kinnick......you know, the Heisman trophy winner and Kinnick Stadium.
One year, Kinnick was second team All-Conference, while Enich was first team All-Conference.
In 1939, Kinnick won the Heisman Trophy and in 1940, Enich was first team All-American and his coach said, "He's the best tackle in football."
In 1983, Enich, who later earned a law degree and became a Judge in Iowa, was selected a member of the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame.
Both Kinnick and Enich were prime members of one of Iowa's most famous football teams, the 1939 "Ironmen," who posted a 6-1-1 record, including a 7-6 victory over nationally third-ranked Notre Dame.
At Iowa State, Smith also started as a back, but was converted to a line position by Coach Jim Yeager. Not only did Smith block and tackle, he also was the Cyclones signal caller.
Coach Yeager commented, "Smith could make any team in the country. He's a guard but he calls our signals and sets up our defensive formations."
The Cyclones had a 4-5 record in the 1940 season.

SOMETHING TO DREAM ABOUT

Here are more snippets of the speech, BOONE-My Kind of Town, that I gave recently at the Boone County Historical Society.

It seems that, through the years, Boone has become more and more a tourist attraction and I think that is something to expand on.

There are many prominent attractions we have here but I can think of three more that could/should be added but have not been exploited. All three are number one's and no other community in Iowa can claim any of them as natives.

The Fareway grocery chain began here in 1938 and the very first Casey's convenience store began here in 1968. Fareway now has 131 stores in eight midwest states, while Casey's have 2,500 stores in 16 states and boast the third largest convenience store chain in the United States.

I can picture in my mind, right here in Boone, a replica of that original Fareway store.....logo, structure, design etc. AND a similar replica of that original Casey's store.....the two, perhaps, side-by-side, and becoming part of our increased attention to tourist traffic.

Yes, I'm old and probably a bit naive BUT I am still aware enough that I understand this would be a huge project to undertake......and would require much assistance from Fareway and Casey's.

But, my question is, "isn't this worth at least some discussion.......how these wonderful Iowa assets, which began right here in our midst, could be added, in some significant way, to our already "tourist community?"

"Crazy, can't happen....won't work"..........yes, I know. Reminds me of a few years back when those same type of comments were leveled about.......let's see.....what was that? Oh yes, the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad.

I mentioned three possibilities. The third would be the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Again, a well known state asset.....and there's only one of them......and its located right here in Boone, Iowa.

Yes, this is different than those other two. However, in Boone since the early 1940's, in its 80 years here, just think of all the moms and dads in the state who, in that time, have become aware of that familiar IHSAA logo via all the Iowa high school boy's athletic programs.

I, oftentimes, wonder if, at the least, we shouldn't in our promotional material, list Boone as the home of the IHSAA, right along with Mamie's birthplace, the Boone and Scenic Valley, and, perhaps some day, also, the original home of the Fareway and Casey's stores.

1965 - OVER AGAIN? WHY NOT!

     Alright, it struck a nerve.

Rummaging through some material I had saved for many years, I couldn't help but think of it in terms of Boone, Iowa this very day.

The object of my attention was a program of 'The Boone Story." Now, right now, I'll say that you have to be of a certain age to have any recollection at all of this production.

Here's the skinny. In the week of September 12-18, in the year 1965, our community celebrated, in a very big way, our centennial. That was 58 years ago......that's why I say only a certain segment of today's population will remember it.

This was a very, very big deal for this community. In my 88 years, I can't recall any match to it.

I wish I could show you the eight-page program that details this "story" in its entirety. It was directed and choreographed by a Joseph Cole Simmons and each day of the centennial week was a special day.

Sunday, September 12, was Faith of Our Fathers Day; Monday, September 13, Homecoming Day; Tuesday, September 14, Agriculture Day; Wednesday, September 15, Pioneer and Ladies Day; Thursday, September 16, Industry and Commerce Day; Friday, September 17, Youth Day and Saturday, September 18, the Centennial Parade was highlighted.

But it was the "Boone Story" production at the Boone County Fairgrounds that, actually stood front and center, due to the enormous community involvement......hundreds, if not a thousand citizens participated in various roles of the two act production which followed Boone's history from its very beginning.

And each, of many scenes, featured Boone residents in starring roles. There were few if any professional actors involved but it seemed like every single citizen, regardless of status, took part in some important way.

Here's my point. We've just completed an important process here, a city election. One of the most contended and watched local elections in quite some time. And, there are still important questions about the city's future to be answered, hopefully, in a thoughtful and mature way.

Wouldn't this be a great time to come together again, as hundreds of Boone citizens did in 1965, in a most cooperative effort to move our community forward in its most positive way possible?

Wow! Just thinking.........this could be done.......it was done in '65.....in trust, in cooperation and minus any rancor......and it can be done again......to the benefit of all if we are willing, collectively, to  pursue it.

EXCERPTS FROM THE KORNERMAN'S RECENT SPEECH

     LET'S TALK SOME BASKETBALL

In the early 1920's, there was no Iowa High School Athletic Association so, there was no "official" State Boys Basketball Tournament. However, there were invitational tournaments at the State University of Iowa and Iowa State University and both claimed to be state championship events.

At the Ames tournament in both 1920 and 1921, the Boone High School team claimed the championships behind the outstanding play of one of the Toreadors greatest all-around athletes, "Hap" Moran who was an all-state basketball player and later, played football in the early days of the National Football League.

The next appearance by a Toreador team at state was in the official IHSAA tournament in 1932 and again, BHS was the state champion, coached by Harold (Bud) Fisher and led on the court by all-stater Oc Dettman.

Boone defeated Muscatine, 16-11, in the state title game at Drake Fieldhouse in Des Moines. The fieldhouse was absolutely "packed to the rafters" and, in fact, an estimated 1,500 fans were "turned away," not able to get in the building.

The official attendance for that game was 8,000 and, at that time, it was the largest crowd to ever witness a basketball game in Iowa. Not even the college teams in the state drew that many fans to a game.

BHS also qualified for the 1948 and 1963 state tournaments but were eliminated in the early  rounds.

    FINAL FOUR APPEARANCES

Every March, the entire USA goes crazy for college basketball as tournament play leads up to the "Final Four," the top teams in the nation in both the men's and women's competition.

The State University of Iowa made two appearances in the "Final Four" in the mid-1950's and there were Boone connections in both of those tournaments.

The 1954 and 1956 Hawkeye teams both earned berths in the "Final Four" and both were coached by Frank (Bucky) O'Conner, who was the Boone High School coach in the 1940's, including that 1948 state tourney entrant.

One of the other teams in that Final Four was the University of Colorado. They had an outstanding individual player who won All-Tournament "Final Four" honors because of his outstanding play. That was Jim Ranglos, another former Toreador coach, who guided BHS to that 1963 state high school tournament appearance.

    BOONE GIRLS STATE APPEARANCES

Boone High School girls basketball teams have earned state recognition with four appearances in the state tournament.

Both the 1958 and 1989 six-on-six teams were in the fields while the 2017 and 2018 five player units also qualified. All lost in first round state play except the 1989 team which posted an opening round victory.

STARS OF STAGE AND SCREEN

For the benefit of those of you who were unable to attend my recent talk, BOONE-My Kind of Town, I am, in the Korner, on occasion, offering some of the stories that were presented at that time.

Mary Ellen Dowd, BHS-50, (no relation to Mamie Doud) always wanted to be an actress and she became very successful on Broadway and in movies. Known as M'el Dowd, perhaps her top success was portraying, Morgan LeFay, the lead actress in the well known production of Cabaret. She also appeared in various films, including one with Bing Crosby and another with Henry Fonda. Shortly before her death, her final appearance was on the long running TV series, Law and Order.

Believe it or not, Ally McBeal is married, in real life, to Indiana Jones and there is a Boone connection.

Ron Flockhart and Kay Honohan were Boone High Schools graduates in 1950. They went on to college, were married, had a daughter, Calista, and Ron's work took the family to various U.S. locations. Calista was another who desired an acting career and she, eventually, secured the job of being Ally McBeal on a five-year TV series that was very successful. In fact, the series, itself, won numerous awards and Calista was honored individually with a Golden Globe etc. etc.

Calista and Harrison Ford eventually became a couple and, perhaps wisely, dismissed the Hollywood scene for life in the Wyoming area. That was a successful move....the couple has been together now for 20 years. Calista has been satisfied limiting her career while Harrison, of course, has continued his movie portrayal of Indiana Jones.

Calista Flockhart was not a Boone High School graduate and never lived here. However, the grandparents, the Flockhart's and the Honohan's, remained in the area and during her younger years, she came to Boone frequently in the summer months to visit her relatives here.

MEMORIES, MEMORIES

The Kornerman's recent talk at the Boone County Historical Society prompted some memories for Tony Crandall, BHS-59.

Tony wrote, "At it's beginning, I recall KWBG being on the sixth floor of the Boone National Building. After 70 years, the name of the station manager came to mind, Mr. Higbee. My mother would type up the police, fire, funeral home and hospital news two or three times a week for KWBG and also for KASI, Ames. I would get on my bicycle and pedal from West Boone to KWBG and deliver her news. There was a lady at KASI who could take shorthand and mom would give her that news over the phone."

He added, "Another memory of that bank building. My aunt, Katheryn, lived above what was then the Oasis Tavern on Keeler Street (first building north of Sunstrom-Miller press). I was looking out the window in a heavy rain storm....and, at that moment....lightning struck the northwest corner of the bank building, knocking some stonework off. It was the "loudest" bang I had ever heard. Both my grandma and aunt lived on Keeler Street in the same block and I was able to pretty much roam downtown whenever I wanted to. I couldn't have grown up in a more interesting place. By the way, at that time, I could ride the bus from home in West Boone to downtown for five cents until I was 12 years old, then it became 25 cents. What a deal."

K-----K

A memory from Mike Loehrer, BHS-64.

"Probably 25 years ago, I was playing Honey Creek and on the 10th hole, I saw Jim Curell playing alone. He asked me to join him and all we did the entire round was talk about his dad, Bill Curell, and the influence he had on him. Bill was the assistant to Jack Bass when I played Little League and a finer gentleman I never knew. The best part of that golf round was that Jim never once laughed at my horrible golf swing. Thanks for engineering a memory."

Editor's Note: We just, in a recent Korner, provided the great news of Jim's induction into the Iowa Golf Association Hall of Fame.

We knew what a great golfer Jim was but, perhaps even more important, he was a very humble, very quiet but wonderful person.

K-----K

Back in 2009......boy, that seems like a long time ago........in the Korner, we apparently had some kind of question asked about that year's Napier girls basketball team.

Good friend Jerry Anderson's wife, Karen Judge Anderson, was a member of that team and recently, Jerry provided me with an email copy sent to the Korner at that time regarding that team. It has provided an interesting memory.

The Napier girls team was going into state tourney play that year and the email states that the Napier Cardinals had a 16-3 record as they were ready to play Goldfield in a first round game.

In part, the Napier girls team consisted of five Judge girls and three Snider girls, all related. There were two seniors, two juniors, three sophomores, two eighth graders and three seventh graders listed on the team roster. Schools were only allowed 12 players for the tournament so the seventh and eighth grade were taken to the tournament but were not eligible to play in it.

Goldfield won the game, 63-51, in the first girl's high school tournament game played in Des Moines' new Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

The following year, Napier and Jordan consolidated to become United Community.

P.S. This was still a time when the Iowa girls played six-on-six basketball, each team featuring three offense players and three defensive players.

K-----K

Through the magic of modern day technology, Dick Longworth, BHS-53, clear away in downtown Chicago, picked up a recent KCCI-TV story about the Boone outdoor piano. He was very impressed. Yes, it was a good story.

A BIG HONOR FOR JIM CURELL

Here's another one of those....."you probably won't see anything about this anywhere but in Kelley's Korner." It shouldn't be that way but its the current world we live in.....I guess.

Thursday, the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame announced the class of 2023 inductees and the late Jim Curell, BHS-1971, of Boone was one of four newcomers to this special group of athletes. Jim's wife, Kim, his children and other family members were in attendance at the induction ceremony.

A previous Boone inductee into this prestigious Hall of Fame was Dr. Ed Updegraff, BHS-1939, who was selected in 2006. Dr. Ed passed away at 100 years of age last December.

Jim Curell became known as "the legend" in golf circles as he spent an incredible 50 years plus on the Iowa golf scene. Known as a "gentleman golfer," he set the "standard on how to play the game both as a competitor and a gentleman."

Curell was a two and three time winner of some of Iowa's top tournaments. He earned the Player of the Year honor in Iowa in 1979 and was twice the state's Senior Player of the Year. He qualified for the United States Senior Amateur twice and scored a remarkable 18 holes in one during his career.

     Jim passed away in  2020.

There are other Boone golfers who excelled on the Iowa scene and could be future Hall of Fame contenders such as......Dr. Charles Updegraff, BHS-42, Max and Bill Hall, BHS-36, and Bob Appenzeller, BHS-57.

As an aside......with communication or non-communication as it stands........perhaps we had never noted the passing of Dr. Ed Updegraff, who spent most of his life, after his college days, as a urologist and great amateur golfer in Arizona.

Highlights of his career included being the National Amateur Golfer of the Year, playing for the U.S. on three winning Walker Cup teams, playing in the famous U.S. Masters tournament and finishing as a semi-finalist in the 1963 British Amateur tournament.

FULFILLING REQUESTS

Since I, the Kornerman, gave a speech recently, BOONE-My Kind of Town, especially some who weren't able to attend in person, have wondered about some of the contents of my talk. As a result, I've decided I will use upcoming Korner's to provide some of that material.

Here was one of the stories....

How important is the forward pass in football? Checking recent statistics on games from Little League on up to the pros, I noted that 20, 30, 40, even 50 and 60 pass attempts were made in a single game. Today's football offenses must feature forward passing 2/3 of the time.

In 1886, Howard Savage was born in Boone, Iowa. He went to the University of Wisconsin to play football. There, he met Bradbury Robinson and they became teammates and the best of friends. Robinson was a kicker and in practice, he would kick and Savage would catch his kicks.....over and over. Robinson became enamored with the fact that Savage could throw the ball back to him with accuracy and distance and held the ball a certain way to get like.....a spiral action.

Robinson asked Savage if he would show him how to throw that football and Savage obliged.

In 1906......ROBINSON BECAME THE FIRST FOOTBALL PLAYER TO EVER THROW A FORWARD PASS AND A TOUCHDOWN PASS IN A FOOTBALL GAME. Then a member of the St. Louis University team, he had transferred there from Wisconsin.

After an incomplete pass on his first try, his second throw resulted in a touchdown, in a 22-0 victory over Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin on September 5, 1906. John Schreider caught that first completed pass. The game of football had just started 15 years previous when Princeton battled Rutgers in 1869.

Obviously, this was big news nationally, making the sport "much safer and more exciting." There had been so many deaths in the sport in the early years, there was much talk about banning it forever. So, many proclaimed that passing "saved the sport."

Robinson was always very gracious with the media when they approached him about his feats AND always conceding that it was his good friend Savage that actually showed him how to throw the football,"revolving as it sailed through the air."

Savage eventually became the National Commander of the American Legion. His picture was on the cover of the famous Time Magazine.

Robinson earned a medical degree and was a surgeon at the famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN..

REVIEWING SATURDAY'S EVENT

In review, I, the Kornerman, was well pleased with the event Saturday at the Boone County Historical Center. Thank you so much to those who took time to join us.

A very nice crowd.......they had to break out some chairs that hadn't been used for some time.....and everything was very well organized. Thank you to my hostess, Jeanne Wiebke, and all of the BCHC crew who were involved.

Someone who was unable to attend, wondered if I could reveal some of the contents of my remarks in written form on the Korner. Well, there were 90 minutes of "remarks" but one of the main topics concerned various things of interest that Boone folks were involved in and were, perhaps, unknown by many.

Following are some of those items that were covered:

Boone native who was instrumental in the evolvement of the forward pass in football.

When popular Canadian award winning singer, Anne Murray, country star Garth Brooks and famed comedian Bob Hope made appearances in Boone.

The strong Boone connection to men's college basketballs "Final Four" in the mid-50's.

The 1932 BHS boys state championship game, played before the largest crowd ever, 8,000, for a basketball game in Iowa up to that time.

Boone connected stars of theatre and television, Mary Ellen Dowd, aka M'el Dowd, and the Broadway production "Cabaret" and Calista Flockhart, aka Ally McBeal, on the award winning TV series.

Boone's Clyde Hovick, the first Iowa boy to ever clear 14-foot in the pole vault.

Boone's connection to the famous "Missouri Waltz."

Toreador swimming......the very first Iowa High School Swim Championship meet in the Boone High pool. Helen Fennema, a Boone boys coach, the first time in the nation that a woman had coached a boys high school athletic team and, of course, BHS athlete Bob Anderson who set two NATIONAL high school swim records.

Former KWBG announcer Mike Pace, who for 20 years was the host of the Powerball drawings twice a week on national television.

Jim Doran, the Boone County native who caught the winning touchdown pass in the 1953 National Football League championship game.....now called the Superbowl.

Boone High graduate Lloyd Courter who became an NCAA champion.......in billiards.

Major League baseball catching great, Jimmy Archer, who once played in Boone and married a Boone lady.

KWBG programs Dial Your Neighbor, Quiz Biz and the Little League Game of the Week.

Toreador golfer Dr. Ed Updegraff who, for several years, was the top-rated Amateur golfer in the USA.

Boone High graduate, Norm Erbe, who became Governor of Iowa.

Boone's Babe Ruth All Star team, one of the eight best in the world and a participant in the Babe Ruth World Series in New Jersey.

Boone High School achievements in the 1960's......football, basketball, baseball and Rose Bowl band.

The best commencement speech ever, at the Boone Campus, DMACC.

My experiences, on statewide television, honoring great high school athletic achievements statewide for 30 years and as the MC of the National High School Sports Hall of Fame for eight years featuring some of the nation's top athletic names Arnold Palmer, Johnny Bench, Tom Landry, John Wooden, Bart Starr, Len Dawson, Kim Mulkey and others.

     What a fun day.

ANOTHER WARNING

Here's my second mention of a speech I have committed to give at the Boone County Historical Society, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 14. The title, "BOONE-My Kind of Town."

I'm trying to stay healthy and I told my doctor the other day that she needed to keep me alive for a couple more weeks because of this commitment.

I'm 88 and, since I''m way past my prime, my greatest fear is that very few people will show up on a busy October day.

There will be some sports talk BUT that won't dominate. Hopefully, some of our stories will jar some memories of things from Boone's "past." And, I promise there will be stories of many Boone connected events, some eye openers, that most attendees will not be aware of.

It should be fun and I'm depending on you to "spread the word" about this event so I'll have somebody to talk to.

THREE NEWS ITEMS

Well, time has passed since the last time I provided anything other then the latest central Iowa deaths in the Korner.

Have a couple things to mention. The other day, I saw famous author, Boone's Phil Larson, BHS-61, coming up my driveway on his motorcycle. Yes, he was bringing me a signed copy of his wonderful first and new book, "A few memorable days."

As the title indicates, the book recalls a few of his worldwide travels from 1969-2019. By the way, he has traveled more since then and, in fact, will join former resident Kriss Phillips and a third party on a trip to Albania in November.

The book is 212 pages, very readable and contains some interesting photos as well as his commentary on his travels.

It is quickly becoming more and more available through the usual sources, Barnes and Noble, etc. and if you enjoy a first person account of worldwide trips, some of which become very precarious, you would find this very interesting reading.

K-----K

The Kornerman has received an update on Pete Kostelnick's, BHS-2005, recovery from an almost fatal auto accident.

Pete, of course, for several years, as been one of the world's most successful ultra marathon runners, including his capture of the record for a coast-to-coast jaunt from the West Coast to New York City a few years back.

In Pete's own words, "made it to the three week mark since the crash and surgery. I saw the post surgery x-rays and can't believe all that is just hanging out in my body for the rest of my time here on earth. Its rough knowing that I have at least five weeks until I can stand or walk again. More than the healing time though, I'm anxious to see what running looks like when I am able to run again. There are so many races and "things" I still want to do. This weekend, I caught up with @runningwithcinder, text with Chuck, two of the four who joined me in 2016 across America. I'm also excited to follow @runjennyrunusa in her run across America. I'm 36 and on one hand, I've experienced and accomplished more that I would have ever dreamed of when I started. On the other hand, I've also let several years slip by, "figuring other things out." If my body lets me (big IF), the next 13 will be even better. Keeping my mind on the long term is all I can do right now."

Editor's Note: Pete certainly earns an A+ for his determination.
