SPECIAL BULLETIN

The Kornerman has a good friend who has obtained water from the Fraser spring for years and I'm sure there are others.
I would advise those to check the KWBG website for a story about the spring.
I won't repeat everything in the story but, basically, Boone County Health asked for a private outside group to test the spring.
Test results have been received and show there is potential contamination from bacteria which renders this water, "unsafe to drink."
For more details.....check the KWBG website.

IT JUST HAPPENED?

Whichever direction this dilemma takes won't, much, alter Jim Grabau's continuing retirement.
He's just begun offering the public his second effort as an author. Nice!
On the other hand, that journey may just fade to a graceful and satisfying end.
At this time, he simply doesn't know.
"I've always enjoyed reading and remembering various events of my life but I never had any preconceived notion of putting those thoughts to print," he said.
But, it did happen. Eventually, his notes became the basis for a memoir,"That Reminds Me of a Story," book number one.
Then, a love of history and a love of family provided the impetus for current book, number two, "Higley."
Its the story of Jim's father-in-law, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Robert H. Higley, a Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross recipient and Torpedo Bomber pilot, who's entire crew vanished, never to be found, during combat against Japanese surface forces at Rabaul, New Britain in November of 1943.
Ironically, Jim had never met his father-in-law AND, in fact, Jim's wife, Nancy, hadn't either. She was in her mother's womb, at the time of Robert's disappearance. Virginia Adam was 21 years old, with a one-year old and Nancy "on the way."
Jim said, "I wrote this book for two reasons. To honor Lt.Higley and all other veterans for their service and, especially, for those veterans who gave their lives so we can still live in a free country. Then too, I'm thanking him for the gift of his daughter, my wife of 52 years."
Jim's book notes that famous Iowan, Nile Kinnick, of University of Iowa football fame, shared a lot of service similarities with Lt. Higley. In addition, its mentioned that Higley flew the famed Grumman TBF Avenger that President George Herbert Walker Bush and Boone resident Warren "Bud" Kruck also piloted with extreme courage and  great success. All four are now deceased.
Readers interested in the World War II years will find interesting and detailed material about Higley's emergence from early flight training to combat situations, as well as enjoying lots of Grabau family history with numerous photo inclusion.
Jim Grabau, BHS-63, was a Toreador swimmer and sang in vocal groups. He graduated from Boone Junior College and concluded his collegiate work at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX.
    TCU? Why?
"I knew some Boone people, Dick Hamilton, BHS-58, and Sue Caldwell, BHS-62, spoke highly of the school and my best friend, Frederick "Fritz" Westfall, BHS-63, had transferred from ISU to TCU." Grabau said. "I was interested in psychology followed, perhaps, by lawyership but finally ended up with a BA in psychology and a minor in biology."
The Texas weather was nice and the degree satisfying but he'd say, without question, "the most important thing that ever happened to me" was meeting Nancy at TCU.
"Several times we seemed to be at the airport at the same time and, finally, I ask her if she would  join me in getting something to eat. We were married in 1968 and came to Boone in that same year."
Ray and Nettie Grabau began R.H. Grabau Construction in 1946 and Jim always knew there would be an opportunity to join his dad's business. He did just that, 42 years, from '68 until retirement in January of 2011. Nancy had found work as an elementary teacher in Boone and retired after 30 years of service to the local school district.
Grabau construction started on a small scale, mainly doing masonry and carpentry work, but, as time passed, the company started sub-contracting and expanding to "outside" areas with several additional employees. "It became a very satisfying work career," Jim said.
Jim's sister, Emily, BHS-59, passed away in 2019. Her husband, Dr. Alan Munson, of Ames survives. The Kornerman recalls "Buddy" Munson as the Toreador quarterback in '58.
Jim and Nancy have a daughter, Alison Pomeranz, BHS-89, and son, Ryan, BHS-91. Alison was a Toreador swimmer and tennis player while I remember Ryan as a small but very tough running back for the BHS football team. He was also a tennis standout with second and fourth place finishes in state singles play. An injury hampered what may have been state championship finishes.
Both Alison and Ryan are married with grandkids that bring Jim and Nancy great joy.
Ryan works for Visa. He and his wife, Andrea Fontanini Grabau, BHS-93, live in Elmhurst, IL while Alison and her husband, Dr. Ben Pomeranz, are residents of Dexter, Michigan, which is close to her husband's work at Ann Arbor.
Jim was scheduled to be interviewed about his book on WHO-TV news segments yesterday (Tuesday) and they may still appear on the channel 13 website. KWBG News Director Jim Turbes interviewed Jim on his "Talk to the Expert" program last Monday morning.
"Higley" is available at the Boone Book Shoppe, can be ordered online by going to Xlibris Boone Store and Jim hopes to have a book signing in the fall. He's pledged $2.00 of each sale to "Wounded Warriors."
More books coming? If the author, himself, doesn't know, how would I, the Kornerman, know?
EDITOR'S NOTE: There are many things the Kornerman misses in our local newspaper coverage.
Perhaps topping that list are personal stories about the citizens of our community, like the one you just read. Stories of individuals, their families, their background, their businesses, their "up's,' perhaps their "downs," but, primarily, just their daily lives as our friends and neighbors in small town Central Iowa.
I, the Kornerman, have always enjoyed that type of writing and, oftentimes, I'm amazed to find out "amazing things" that I never dreamed were part of an individual's life. Hobbies, dreams, ambitions, interesting things that you never knew about them until you asked.
Jim Grabau grew up in Boone and Nancy has also been here over 50 years but maybe, just maybe, you, who have known them for years, now know them for more than just a "hello." And that's what personal stories are all about. I wish we were offered more.

BOONE CONNECTED DEATH

Mary Longworth Koester, 83, Mequon, WI. BHS-55. Sister of Richard Longworth, BHS-53.

FINALLY..........

Yes, the derecho did it to us........just as it did to everyone else in its path. However, we, at the Korner, must have been one of the last customers to reclaim our spot on the internet. We caught on early yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, after a full week's absence.
By the way, thanks to all those who, we know, attempted to contact us and then worried a bit when we were unable to get back to many of them.
One of our most reliable friends all through the years has been Dick Shenary. Whenever we've had a question about "things," he's provided the answer, most of the time.
I'd never heard of derecho but Dick informed me it is a widespread, long-lived wind storm, associated with bands of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms, variously known as bow echos, squall lines or quasi-linear convective systems.
In simpler terms, the Kornerman would simply say, if it wasn't a tornado, it was a very tight number two, whatever that is. Several ravaged Iowa communities clocked winds in excess of 100 mph.
Personally, I've never seen anything close to it in my 75 years in Boonetown. It had to effect every one of our citizens in some way. No power, no phone or internet service and tons, I mean tons, of tree and crop damage that will take months to clean up. It will be a huge challenge to get it all taken care of by summer's end.
City beautiful? You bet, most of the time, but, in this, hopefully, once in a lifetime event, we took a big time hit........worse than my writing can possibly describe.
But, time marches on, we've had beautiful weather in the days since and full recovery is certain.......in time.
K-----K
Lots of catching up to do.

UPDATE ON BOONE CO. HISTORICAL SOCIETY

In viewing the latest minutes of a recent Board meeting of the Boone County Historical Society, its obvious that the discovery of  errors committed by the previous administration has provided a good lesson for the new leadership group.
That's a need for TRANSPARENCY, detailed and complete. That's the pursuit.
Thus, significant time has been spent on a followup of financial recommendations from the state audit, a review and update of Society bylaws and updating of the BCHS website.
In reviewing the previous three years of financial transactions, it was determined that the biggest reasons that led to the Society's loss of funds, during that time, were three-fold. (1) the previous director's unfettered access to charge accounts. (2) the use of paid outside vendors rather than volunteers for needed repairs or to build things and (3) a lack of information presented to the board regarding the cost of various new projects. The director would present a project idea and then, without specific board approval, would begin incurring costs related to the project, followed by the presentation of bills relating to it at a later date.
Of the lengthy minutes, here were a few of the more interesting mentions.
     (1) The treasurer's report dated June 30, 2020, indicated there was just $6,066.79 in Society funds, with July obligations still to be met.
     (2) There is no plan to reopen the museums in the foreseeable future due to COVID-19.
     (3) There has not been much building rental activity but that possibility will be more actively persued.
     (4) An unscheduled elevator inspection test by the elevator company has been done at a cost of $450 with few problems noted. However, in the near future, the Iowa Elevator Inspection Office will also require an inspection at a cost of $300-400 to bring the elevator up to code.
     (5) The Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace will eventually be taken over by the Birthplace Foundation. But, until that transaction becomes official, no movement of materials back to the birthplace will occur.
Finally, the Kornerman says, "Hip, Hip, Hooray........Thank You......Thank You.....Thank You" to all who have stepped forward, minus anything other than our praise, to take on this responsibility. It would be one thing to "step into" a stable situation. Its quite another to "step forward" when a complete rebuild of management and trust is required.
Obviously, any hint of involvement.......financially or volunteerwise.......would be a much welcomed event.
Financially, help is easy. For $25, individual memberships are available; families can sign up for $40 and businesses or organizations can register for $75. And, memberships, of course, are a major key to survival.
Volunteerism is important as well........whether its simply watering the flowers at the birthplace or spending several hours as a docent or aiding in various other ways.
The Society is located at 602 Story Street.......phone 515-432-1907 or email admin@BCHSIowa.org. for any further information.
This is a vital asset and we all, in whatever way possible, should do what we can to restore and retain its place as an important community landmark.
K-----K
We've been persuing this study of former Toreador drum majors and/or mascots and, without ANY outside help, have been able to add an item or two to our original list.
The Kornerman believes Bob Carpenter may have been the drum major in 1952 with Marlyn Wiemer in 1953. Chuck McCubbins and Doug Gustafson served in the late 50's to early 60's with McCubbins probably in 1959 and Gustafson after that, for, perhaps, more than one year.
The Rose Bowl band of 1964 was led by John Reed. Dr. Bill Martin was in charge in 1965 and 66, Chuck Solheim in 1967 and Craig Harvey in 1969.
Dorothy Cleveland guided the band in 1973 and Terri Criner was the leader for three years, ending in her senior year of 1976.
Now, all of you out there in Toreador land are invited to tell me what I have wrong. Or, of course, you can add to my list.

     DESPITE PANDEMIC, BOONE WELCOMES PROGRESS
Despite the scourge of this pandemic thing, the Kornerman, a 75-year resident of Boone Iowa, is waking each morning excited about the future of our community. It seems to me there's about as much, or even more, positive activity right now in Boone town than, perhaps, in my lifetime here.
Construction of various types seems prevalent in all areas......older homes, beyond repair, are coming down and new structures coming forth. It has to be a boon for Boone and, especially, those involved in the construction industry.
The orderly move to the southern part of town by some established and several new business offerings is continuing.
Then, too, the recently, somewhat completed, Welcome Train and Greenspace projects are bound to have a positive effect. In recent editions we've told you, in some detail, about those projects and in this edition we'll detail another such venture......our Boone County Freedom Rock.
Located at the northwest corner of the intersection of West Third and Main Street (yes, that's in the Courthouse block), the project was started in 2014 by Mysty Stumbo to honor her son, Sgt. Daniel Sesker.
Sgt. Sesker, born in Boone in 1983, graduated from Ogden High School in 2001. He was deployed to Kosovo in 2003 as part of Operation Joint Guardian. In July 2005, he volunteered to join the LeMars based Troop C, 1st Squadron, 113th Calvary, which performed reconnaissance and surveillance missions.
Between his tours of duty, he worked as a counselor at Woodward Academy and as a part-time police officer in Gowrie.
Sesker, then 22, was killed on April 6, 2006, when a bomb exploded near his Humvee. He was manning a gun aboard the vehicle when insurgents detonated the bomb outside of Tikrit.
By the summer of 2015, enough funds were raised from various organizations and individuals in Boone County to have Ray "Bubba" Sorenson paint a Freedom Rock for Boone County, just as he has for numerous other Iowa counties with a goal of doing the same for ALL 99 Iowa counties.
Sorensen says he had the plan for the Boone County rock imagined long before he started the process. He had always been amazed by photos of trains going across the Kate Shelley Bridge. After seeing the bridge in person, Sorensen wanted to paint on the rock a draped flag to blend into the sky behind the streaming train.
The back side of the rock features President Dwight Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie, who's birthplace is located in Boone at 709 Carroll Street.
The rock also pays tribute to a pair of Boone County heroes........with personal paintings of Sgt. Sesker and Iowa Army National Guard Command Sgt. Maj. Marilyn Gabbard, a former Boone resident and the first woman in the history of the Iowa guard to be killed in combat.
Gabbard was a passenger on a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter when it crashed January 20, 2007, northeast of Baghdad. She served as the non-commissioned officer in charge of the National Guard Affairs Team in Baghdad.
Sorensen met with the families of both victims and commented, "I love to learn about our veterans and their history, especially those who've made the ultimate sacrifice. Meeting with family members has added to my continued inspiration on this tour and is, hopefully, seen in this artwork."
A wonderful memorial tribute to our Boone County veterans is well underway and will, hopefully, soon be completed.
Plans for landscaping around the rock and the purchase of flag poles, each one representing a branch of the armed services, will be made to finalize the tribute. The site will also become handicap accessible. Its estimated $50,000 will be needed for closure and there are two ways for this funding.
Outright donations are always accepted and friends or family members of veterans also have an opportunity to purchase a paver, a special, more personal way of contributing......just like Bob Hammond, BHS-53, recently did. He layed a paver that he sponsored on behalf of his son, Brian, a veteran who passed away in May of 2019.
Fred Greiner has sparked this project and deserves much credit for spending many hours raising funds and seeking supporters.

Spurred on by a note from Bill Olson, BHS-62, a week ago, we're starting an investigation  into former Toreador drum majors and/or those who were the Toreador mascot.
This got started because Olson was seeking contact information on Chuck McCubbins, BHS-59. Olson wrote, "ALSO looking for all those who wore the old Toreador outfit." The Kornerman  is thinking that means McCubbins was a drum major.
The investigation is just beginning and the Kornerman needs HELP.
Tom Peterson, BHS-67, mentioned Chuck Solheim as drum major from his class and I think other high-steppers were Doug Gustafson, BHS-61, and Dr. Bill Martin, BHS-66. The Kornerman is wondering if Bob Carpenter, BHS-52, and maybe Marlyn Wiemer, BHS-53, were also drum majors. I don't know if he was a drum major or Toreador or both but I know Dave Oppedahl, BHS-59, looked terrific in a Toreador outfit.
