ARE WE OR AREN'T WE

Our friends at the Des Moines Register recently printed a story about the Fairfield Iowa Golf and Country Club. Nice Story. It indicated that the Fairfield club was the oldest continuously operating golf club west of the Mississippi and, thus, was celebrating it's 130th anniversary this month. Congratulations.

HOWEVER, the Kornerman has been around a while and there was something about that story that raised my hackles to a point where I felt further investigation was warranted. What about our Boone Golf and Country Club, now Cedar Pointe? I've seen limited stories and even pictures that indicate it might have had a very long background as well.

Admittedly, in my condition, my research on anything, travels about as far as I can reach within my office walls. In addition, this just came about so recently I haven't had time to be very thorough but I have, rather quickly, uncovered a few facts that might bring into question the Fairfield club's boast.

According to the original Register story, the Fairfield Club was first organized in 1892 as the Kahgaligee Golf Club. In 1896, a hand written constitution was formed. A log cabin purchased in 1900 served as the intitial clubhouse and in 1914, members incorporated.

The Kornerman's limited  Boone information is that the Boone Golf and Country Club was built in 1889. That's according to something called GolfInfoGuide.com.

So, in review, Fairfield first organized in 1892, constitution in 1896, log cabin purchased in 1900 and members incorporated in 1914. Our limited Boone info states that our club was built in 1889. It does make you wonder doesn't it?

As long as we're on the subject, minus any specific calendar dates, we can pass on a few other particulars about our Boone club. The newly organized club leased farmland on South Marshall Street and just south of the Milwaukee Railroad tracks. A nine-hole course was layed out and construction of a clubhouse along South Marshall began.

It seems that before automobiles came into being, a horse drawn hack, accomodating about 20 people, started at Eighth and Story and drove along Story picking up passengers enroute to the club. In those days, social activity was scarce and at the club, which featured a large dance hall, there were weekly dinners on Wednesday nights, with special emphasis on holidays like Halloween and the Fourth of July.

When the depression hit, the club membership decreased significantly but members of the Updegraff family got things reactivated and, in fact, organized a group to underwrite the costs of the purchase of the land which had been leased from the earliest years. An additional 14 acres of land was also purchased and a new clubhouse built at the present location, at the south end of Cedar Street.

Boone's challenge to this Fairfield boast is nothing new. Several other clubs and courses have made similar claims about being the oldest club or course west of the Mississippi. For example, the Burlington Golf Club was incorporated in June of 1899 and claims its the oldest "continually operated INCORPORATED club" west of the Mississippi.

Fairfield "Oldest continuously operating" or Burlington "continually operating incorporated club".......take your pick.

BUT, if that mentioned website is accurate, our Boone club, built in 1889, has an absolute right to also join in making a historical claim.

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY

There's a lot of movement these days in our neighborhood on South Jackson Street.

Of course, the new Ledges Elementary School is just behind our house and much of the movement is due to construction of that new facility. Hancock Drive, just a half/block south of us is actually getting more than its share of traffic as truck after truck after truck, and smaller vehicles as well, are constantly traveling back and forth on that street into and out of the building area.

Perhaps less noticed by most is the very heavy traffic on South Jackson and then west onto Hancock. As five year residents of the area, we've determined that the entire east half of north Boone follows that path......down South Jackson and west onto Hancock for a final destination of DMACC, perhaps Fareway or east, out of town. I guess those northeast Boone residents feel that's a shorter way to their south or western destination than going over to Story or Marshall and down.

Obviously, some kind of signage will, ultimately, be needed at the intersection of South Jackson and Hancock, especially when the school is completed and drivers are coming from the east or from the west down Hancock. That's in addition to those coming south on Jackson and turning onto Hancock.

Also, to add to all this, it doesn't take much thought to determine that when the road is constructed past the new school and on out to Airport Drive, that will be a favored route for many Boone residents from Hancock or South Jackson heading west in an Ames or Des Moines direction.

By the way, the Boone Community School District Board recently announced that bids for that Hancock Drive Extension project will be accepted until September 29, 2022. Then, on October 10, 2022, consideration of the bids received and the awarding of contracts for the project or other action will take place.

Work on the project shall commence as soon as possible after award of the contract and is scheduled for substantial completion on or before July 28, 2023. Final grading and seeding is scheduled for substantial completion on or before September 16, 2023.

The new elementary building and also the new multi-purpose home for the Futures and Boone HSAP building now have their official names, as recently announced by the School Board. Committees were formed to obtain name ideas and a community vote was completed. The end result was that the School Board received recommendations and approved the following names, Ledges Elementary School for the new Elementary project and Crossroads Learning Hub for the Futures Alternative High School and Boone HSAP program.

BOONE RESIDENTS GAIN ACCLAIM

O.K., the Kornerman is probably, personally, braggadociois at times but remember what old Dizzy Dean always said,"it ain't braggin' if you did it." I do try to stick to the facts and avoid excess embellishment.

Also, in my defense, remember, too, that I'm also Boone Iowa's number one booster. What's wrong with that? If the community, in general, or any of our inhabitants, personally, do something especially worthy of praise and I'm aware, I'll relate it to the heavens and more.

SO, I do have some great news of some great things done recently by some Boone folks.

Boone's Autumn Nigro-Weaver, BHS-2010, is deaf but its quite obvious she's not sitting in a corner and bowing to a disability she's faced for a lifetime. Quite the contrary. Her's is an amazing story of grit and determination.

Autumn's latest success has occurred this year. After being named "Amazing Iowa Senior Miss," in January, she traveled to Nashville last month and took top national honors, "National Miss Amazing Senior Miss Queen. She had been honored before......twice. In both 2016 and 2017, she was named "Miss Deaf USA" and went on to a fifth runnerup selection in the "Miss Deaf World" competition.

Sure, there, no doubt, have been some tough times trying to "fit in" but here was a young lady who faced her disability "head on" and has done numerous things that have taught and inspired others who face similar situations.

One of her main objectives have been to make American Sign Language (ASL) more accessible to deaf and hearing impaired people. She teaches ASL classes in Boone, Ames, Madrid and Ogden and speaks at various sites, providing information about her personal life history and how she has successfully conquered it.

CONGRATULATIONS AUTUMN. YOU  MAKE ALL OF BOONE PROUD.

K-----K

Then too, we receive word that two well known Boone names have been honored by entrance into the Iowa 16-inch, slow pitch, Hall of Fame.

Five new members were recently inducted and the class includes Mike Kruse, BHS-79, and Pat Kruse,BHS-82. So, congratulations are in order for those sons of Boone residents Lila and Darrell Kruse.

Their longtime diamond achievements have been noticed statewide.

MORE CUTS, OR NOT

For those of us who, for a lifetime, have very much enjoyed reading, from our own hands, a newspaper, with our morning orange juice, there's been nothing but bad news lately.

Unfortunately, it appears that additional, disturbing news will continue to chip away at us until there's an unknown final ending.

You've had to dig deep to discover the most recent developments and maybe that's good news. As this is being written, the Kornerman has seen no indication that the most recent staff cuts of Gannett employees have reached the Des Moines Register......yet.

Gannett, of course, is the Register's parent company. Based out of Virginia, Gannett is the largest U.S. newspaper publisher, as measured by total daily circulation. Gannett boasts over 100 daily and 1,000 weekly publications.

According to Gannett, the newest round of layoffs occurred last Friday and was due to a $54 million second quarter loss, on revenues of $749 million. At least 20 of their newspapers were affected but I've seen no listing of the ones involved. As a result, I'm unaware of the status of the Register or the St. Cloud, Minnesota Times where one spokesman said, "we used to have six full-time and four part-time sports reporters. We now have one."

The last Register layoff, we know of, occurred in August of 2013 when nine workers, including five reporters, were cut. That was the same time when subscriptions were boosted by 40-percent.

Some Iowa newspaper readers bank on Lee Enterprises for their consumption.  However, in May, that entity was forced to make $45 million in cuts. Ten Iowa newspapers were involved, including the Quad City Journal, Waterloo Courier, Sioux City Journal and Mason City Globe Gazette, in addition to the nearby Omaha World Herald.

Of course the newspaper industry is not the "one and only." We do know that others, such as HyVee and Wells Fargo in Iowa, have undergone serious recent cutbacks.

Let's hope we don't hear that the Register is involved in the latest Gannett cuts, although the future seems rather dismal.

K-----K

A page in the most recent Boone County Historical Society publication, "Trail Tales," provided a memory maker for the Kornerman and it does tie in, somewhat, with the just completed newspaper talk.

The page in question features a map titled, "Boone, Iowa, Trade Area,"........"Every day coverage of the Boone News Republican," which, of course, was a six days a week daily paper in earlier days.

Now this is a 1942 map and that "coverage area" stretched from Gowrie to Jewell to Slater to Woodward and many communities in between.

Unbelievable, but true......even into the 60's, when I was the Boone News Republican Sports Editor. At that time, I had the extreme pleasure, and I mean that statement, of traveling to and personally talking to the coaches and athletes, while providing sports coverage for 18 (that's right), 18 schools sports activities for the daily News Republican.

Obviously, I couldn't be at each of those 18 sites on a daily or even weekly basis but I did follow a regular schedule to personally go, when possible, and build relationships. The reward, in most cases, was that, via phone, someone from those destinations were assigned to call in their game results or anything else deemed newsworthy.

With a tear in my eye, I recall those wonderful days and the extreme pleasure derived from covering the athletic events of those schools, while also gaining lifetime friendships with so many terrific people.

THE MISSOURI WALTZ....AND BOONE

Scanning the radio the other night, I discovered a discussion of the 100th birthday (actually the 101st) of the state of Missouri joining the union, August 10, 1821. A rendition of the famed , "Missouri Waltz" even accompanied the conversation.

Ding dong! That sequence got this old head churning, trying to recall the Boone connection to the "Missouri Waltz."

The Eppel name, which I associated with Boone music,  popped up first and you have to be old to remember it. I DO REMEMBER. The family dates back to 1898 in Boone but my first true recollection was of a fellow northsider, Paul Eppel, BHS-48.

The story is rather complicated with lots of twists and turns and a non-resident, Frederick Knight Logan, usually gets the most credit for the famous song. HOWEVER, it was Boone's John Valentine Eppel who first heard the melody, arranged it and played it publicly.

The full and true story was told by a former pianist in the John Eppel orchestra, Helen Striker, BHS-1899. She started with the orchestra in 1909 and remained until 1919, when she moved to Ilinois.

According to accounts from Ms. Striker, the song melody was first heard by Eppel during a Missouri orchestra engagement. Returning to Boone, Striker composed and harmonized the two minor themes or melodies used in the waltz. The "newer" version was then played regularly by the Eppel Orchestra and was very favorably received.

John Eppel, grudgingly, eventually, sold the rights for publishing the "Missouri Waltz" to Frederick Knight Logan of Oskaloosa and New York. Eppel was not easily convinced that he had something worthy of publication. It took a train ride from Mr. Logan to Boone for a personal and persuasive encounter with Eppel to stoke the interest. Logan indicated that if he, Eppel, didn't publish the song, someone else "will do so and take the profits to which you are entitled."

Eppel finally consented and Logan put the piece on the market. According to the internet, the song was originally known as "Hush-a-bye, Ma Baby," melody by John V. Eppel, lyrics by J.R. Shannon and arrangement by Frederick Knight Logan. It was first published in 1912 and secured by Forster Publishing in 1914. It's still known as the state song of Missouri.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A little Boone history and I, the Kornerman, just loves it when our little burg here in central Iowa gains state or even national or international recognition for various achievements.

K-----K

I, the Kornerman, just got around to reading the latest, June 7, 2022, Boone County Historical Society board meeting minutes and it reminded me of something important.

Sure, its easy to think of "all things" concerning the Society's building at 602 Story Street. However, there are other responsibilities as well. For example, think of the Kate Shelley area and Hickory Grove school site.

I could never "oversell" the recovery job that's been done by a handful of volunteers, including a dedicated board, in getting this important part of our community back to "vital" status. They'd agree there are still things to be done but their hard work in getting the BCHS out of some very desperate straits to a presence of great progress and hope is indeed gratifying.

Currently, there are 332 members but more are continuously sought. And, of course, volunteerism is another ongoing need.

Here are a few other things gleaned from the latest report. Those reading this live in a home that probably needs constant care. The same holds true for the BCHS building. General cleaning of things like the stove and oven is constant and there's a need for some electrical work. Some new ceiling fans have been recommended and a bid for some window and screen replacement outside has been approved. In addition, the Kate Shelley building and Hickory Grove school building need some improvements.

Various activities continue. The Rose Bowl band exhibit is on board the entire month of August and the Saturday with a Scholar presentations have been ongoing. The next one will be a presentation September 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. by George Eckstein, BHS-58, who will discus World War I and World War II weapons.

Anyone interested in joining or volunteering can make contact.....info@bchsiowa.org.......or call 515-432-1907 and leave a message.

BOONE'S RINEHART TO ENTER UNI HALL OF FAME

It was a no-brainer........just a matter of "when."

He last played in an official football game in 2014 but now, eight years later, Boone native Chad Rinehart will be inducted into the University of Northern Iowa Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place at a banquet Friday, September 16, in Cedar Falls. Six other individuals and the entire 1963-64 men's basketball team will also be honored in the UNI-Dome at halftime of the Sacramento State/UNI football game that begins at 4 p.m., Saturday, September 17.

Rinehart, 6-5 and 320, was an all-state football offensive lineman for the Toreadors in his senior year, 2003.

At UNI, he immediately made a big impact, eventually, helping the Panthers to 37 wins, including three Gateway Football Conference championships, headlined by a run to the 2005 FCS National Championship game and an undefeated 2007 regular season.

The son of Boone residents, Gayle and Marty Rinehart, Chad was a first team All-Gateway selection three times. That was topped by second team All-American status as a junior and first team All-American selection as a senior.

Considered one of the best tackles in the history of the Missouri Valley Football Conference, Chad was named to the league's Silver Anniversary Team in 2009.

Rinehart was selected in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft, the 96th pick overall, by the Washington Redskins. After two season's with Washington, 2008/10, and a brief stint on the New York Jets practice squad in 2010, Chad signed a contract with the Buffalo Bills, where he would make 17 starts in 27 games played in 2010/12. With the San Diego Chargers in 2013/14, he made 26 starts and concluded his NFL career with a total of 47 starts with 58 games played in seven seasons.

Chad now lives in Cedar Falls with his wife, Justine, and their three children, Charlotte, Magnolia and Crawford. He serves as Associate Athletic Director at Waverly-Shell Rock High School. Congratulatory notes can be sent to......1704 Valley High Drive, Cedar Falls, IA 50613.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  It has certainly been a pleasure for the Kornerman to follow Chad's amazing career, even over and above his football success. I've been especially impressed by the fact that he was more than a great football player. An excellent student, he played the cello in the Toreador orchestra during his high school days AND, perhaps, most important of all, showed you can have a good, albeit mid-range career in professional football but also the good sense to "get out" of the mayhem before your body and brain are broken.
P.S. One other thing. I remember Chad carrying groceries to my car from HyVee during his high school days. That rings a bell. Wasn't there another great UNI football star who was also employed by HyVee before having an NFL Hall of Fame career. Seems to me Kurt Warner was the name.

CONGRATULATIONS CHAD, GAYLE, MARTY, JUSTINE, THAT SON AND THOSE DAUGHTERS.

BITS AND PIECES: (1) You'll recall that in a recent edition I mentioned I had sent an email to columnist Courtney Crowder of the Des Moines Register in my continuing effort to get the Super National Races publicized. Several earlier attempts to the DMR sports department had resulted in "no reply." That's why I tried to go a different direction. The good news is that Courtney did reply.......however, she simply indicated she had sent my email on to the sports department, while noting she would put the event on her 2023 schedule for review. Again, I haven't heard from the sports department of course. (2) Cub fan Jim Rueber of Boone sent me some interesting material. Included were two colored pictures, taken in 1959, of a huge arrow pointing, I guess, to the Boone Business District. At least that's the wording on the sign. It appears to be hanging over a street intersection, perhaps, Fourth and Story. Obviously, the sign no longer exists. Then too, there was an April 1, 1924 picture of the New Lyric, the only vaudeville house in Boone and copies of  several ads of Boone businesses.....H.C. Payne, Studebaker dealer of 1924 and several businesses from 1946, Ripley Dairy, Youll Heating and Metal Shop, Chester Echternach's Groceryteria, Rocho Brothers Ice and Coal, J.R. Chaloupka Real Estate, Walker's Cafe and Rea's Men's Wear.

TWO TOPICS: FAIRNESS AND ANOTHER TRY

    FAIRNESS

Look......its been no secret that I, the Kornerman, have been harsh, on occasion, with my criticism of our current, most available print media offerings.

However, fairness is an important personal asset so, on this occasion, I have nothing but praise for a story in the most recent edition of the Boone News Republican. It was great.

Even drawing a main banner line, the story was about the Toreador band and their wonderful trip to California to participate in the Rose Bowl parade of 1963.

The well written story by Sara Jordan-Heintz was lengthy, featured almost step-by-step coverage of the experience with band members quotable reactions and a front page photo included.

For the month of August, the Boone County Historical Society Museum, at 602 Story Street, is featuring an exhibit in its lobby dedicated to that band. On Pufferbilly parade day, Saturday, March 6, thirty members of the band will be "in the parade" via a flatbed trailer and from 2 to 4 p.m. on that day, the BCHS will be hosting an open house to give attendees an opportunity to view various trip momentos and even visit with band alumni.

It will be a great day of special remembrance for the band and the Boone community.

K-----K

   ANOTHER TRY

    Well, I did it..........AGAIN.

In several past years, I, the Kornerman, have tried to induce the Des Moines Register to provide any kind of coverage to the Super National Races held each year in Boone. Naturally, I contacted the Register sports department.

I threw all the statistics at them.....the fact that thousand's of past winners and participants and their families come from all over the U.S. and Canada (27 states and over 900 pre-entries a year ago)  to participate in a full week of top national racing. To them it really is "an annual Racin' Vacation" for the entire family AND the result is felt not just in Boone but all over central Iowa, via hotels, motels, restaurants, gas stations and camp grounds.

    I never received a reply.

I decided to make another try this year but with a different approach. I emailed Courtney Crowder who is a "Register Iowa Columnist and senior writer." She's an excellent writer and leans toward human interest type stories so I wrote, "that would work.....many human interest stories could be derived by simply talking to these race participants or family members......finding out why they save all year to bring the entire family from many distant locations  to little old Boone Iowa for this event. Lots of story possibilities there.

I emailed on July 22.......no reply as of August 2.

To be completely honest, the enormous amount of coverage the Register gives to the Knoxville Raceway races have stirred my consternation in comparison to the lack of Super National coverage.

I'm not completely naive. I understand the racing at Knoxville is a different brand AND the purse money involved is higher.......money, money, money is, so often, the decision maker on so many things, probably including media race coverage. I can't even display how their schedule and attendance compare. Still, there surely are many things that are offered by the Super Nationals that are superior or, at least, equal. I can't say the Register's coverage of the Super Nationals is equal or, for that matter, even available.

Just in case you're wondering.........no, I have no real bias connection to the Super Nationals or the Boone Speedway. Years ago we took grandkids to some of the races but I'm, by no means, a die hard or consistent fan.

I simply think its one of many great assets our community has, providing great entertainment for area race fans and a few extra dollars for area businesses. This 75 year resident firmly supports anything that I think is an asset to the Boone community.
