CONCRETE MEMORIES

In no way have we solved the mystery of the balloon type instrument that Vern Modeland, BHS-50, is confident he remembers seeing sometime in the 50's/60's era. It supposedly occurred in the South Boone area and Vern was reminded of it from recent stories about the weather balloons that gained international attention a few weeks ago.

Vern had mentioned that, perhaps, Dick Longworth may have a memory of such. Sorry! Dick wrote, "Vern's memory is better than mine. I don't recall any such incident at all." He wondered if it had occurred during the late 40's when "Vern and I were racing bicycles on Boone Street." Dick wondered if anyone was interested enough to go to the library or check the Boone News Republican archives for possible information.

In my reply to Richard, I mentioned a great memory I, the Kornerman, had of playing basketball at the Longworth residence on South Boone street. In my days of "growing up," those of us that wanted to become All American basketball players did everything we could to improve our game. In my case, there was an old barn behind our house with a basketball hoop attached. And yes, even on cold, icy wintry days, I remember carrying cinders from our furnace to spread on the ice to accommodate some fantastic dribblin,' culminated by a fantastic shot at that old hoop. A majority of my time honing my skills probably occurred in similar situations.

HOWEVER, there were a few times when we potential stars hit the "big time" on courts way out of our "normal reach." A good example was the Longworth driveway that was completely concrete and featured a REAL, honest to goodness, BACKBOARD AND GOAL AND I would guess the goal was even leveled (remember the recent Cyclone NCAA tournament debacle?)

The Longworth arena wasn't the only such "show in town." There was a neighbor family between 15th and 16th on the east side of Carroll street where a similar situation occurred. The family name was Koenig and I remember looking forward to throwing up some shots at their place. Then too, the Justin Gustafson family further north on Carroll, near 18th street, had a hoop on a garage that invited lots of neighborhood action on a court not as pristine as the Longworth/Koenig facilities but still quite nice and very popular. And, there were probably many other similar sites that this old head has forgotten. Just thought of another.......across the street, Don Silvey's garage housed a hoop and the driveway was cement.

I would be remiss, however, if I didn't mention the old, very old YMCA gym on Eighth Street. Yes, it was dark, dungy and dirty but it was a cement area with hoops and I wish I could claim a quarter for every shot that was ever launched at that gym where Roger Dutton and various other future BHS stars lived by the hour, day after day after day.

K-----K

Thanks to all who remembered my birthday. There were many phone calls and cards BUT even more greetings via email, which seems to provide more room for conversation than the normal card. That allowed me to "catch up" with the lives of people I hadn't heard from for some time. It was all very much appreciated.

K-----K

One more thing. A non birthday mention helped "make my day" even more special. Martha Warren Hilsabeck emailed, "wanted to give you a huge "THANKS' for publishing the obits in the Korner. Without our local paper anymore there are some families we would miss passing our sympathies on to survivors if it weren't for your column. My seem like a small thing to some people, but its been very important to me."

The Kornerman concludes, "There's nothing more satisfying than knowing you're providing a service that is "important' to people."

SEEKING SOME HELP

Verne Lyon, BHS-61, has informed us that his class is undertaking a special project regarding a former classmate, Jerry Converse. Jerry was killed while operating intelligence gathering equipment during the 1967 Gulf war when the Israelites attacked the ship he was on.

Verne wrote, "I helped Iowa State University recognize him on the Hall of Fame in the Memorial Union on the ISU campus. He is also recognized at Camp Dodge. We think he should be recognized in his home town."

According to Verne, another classmate, Gene Keys, is coming to Boone, and he and Verne are scheduled to appear before the Boone City Council at 6 p.m. on March 20 to make a case for some type of permanent honor and/or remembrance of Jerry by the city of Boone.

K-----K

Bob Atherton, BHS-65, reported from Colorado that Kae Nelson Schmickley, BHS-56, several years ago, had sent to his mother, Betty Anderson Atherton, BHS-40, some historical articles about P.T. Nelson's and Sons lumber yard at 923 Story Street (remember?). Bob said his mother had worked for Nelson's after high school through World War II.

"There are some cool news clips from 1929 and 1943 about the Boone Housing Guild and Builders and lumbermen in Boone. Also, lots of Boone names and pictures," Bob said. He indicated that it "looks like Pabst Brewing Company owed some Story Street property and the lumber yards positioning around the train station was interesting."

He concluded that the "Nelson's were very good to my mom, especially when dad was overseas."

The Kornerman says there were lots of ads for Nelson's showing they were able to provide lots of materials for remodeling or building, and even a story from Community Magazine, April, 1929 edition, featuring the history and growth of a "substantial Boone enterprise" which had come to Boone from Sweden.

K-----K

We're at a stage in our life and the Korner's life where it seems we lose potential viewers on an almost daily basis. Just learned that Gary Knox, United HS-58, passed recently in Iowa Falls. Quite often, through the years of the Korner, we heard interesting material provided by Gary concerning Boone and area history. We'll miss his insights.

K-----K

Old Vern won't give up. Vern Modeland, BHS-50, is still searching for information regarding a weather balloon incident in Boone many years ago. He wrote, "somebody please come forward to recall that incident I wrote about. I can't find a record of it, except in my mind. I have no relatives left in Boone nor anyone from the good old class of '50 to send to the library to search the archives. Richard Longworth's family lived a block south of there on South Boone Street. Perhaps he has an idea of where to look or even might remember the incident."

He concluded, "Fading mind (apparently) wants to know."

WE HAVE RETURNED

Yes, I know. Just as my wife, Jo, tells me when I'm disappointed by a loss...."It's just a game."

But, about this Catlin Clark phenomenon? Its come late in life and I just don't know that I've experienced this feeling in my first almost 88 years.

This young Iowa lady has me completely mesmorized. I simply can't look "away" for fear I'll miss something spectacular. A three that ripples the net (especially from logo distance), a seemingly normal basketball pass but with more.... a, sometimes, sensational flair to it, and then, of course, just the expression of joy and complete command and fire that she so often displays.

It truly is amazing to see.

K-----K

Alright.....yes I've been lazy. But, I finally, after a long delay, have accumulated enough contributed material that I can "pass on."

With signs of spring in the air, class reunions can't be far behind. The BHS/BSH classes of 1958 are planning a 65-year meeting here on August 10, 2023. Its a ways off but here's your first Korner mention and we'll repeat the word as the time draws closer.

The Herman Park Pavilion will be the meeting site from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the classes of '57 and '59 are also being extended invitations to join in the fun. Attendees are invited to bring their own lunch and choice of drink. In other words, they're brown-bagging it.

K-----K

Along that same line, let's talk Pufferbilly. This year the dates are August 4-6 and the theme is "Throwbacks on the Tracks."

Ann and Eldon Hutcheson have been named the Grand Marshalls for the annual parade and some "big time" entertainment has been booked. Blessid Union of Souls will perform and they are the first multi-platinum selling band to come to Pufferbilly in over the last 10 years.

Best of all......the concert will be free AND Art in the Park is also returning after a recent absence.

K-----K

A couple other "mentions." Boone's Pete Kostelnick, BHS-2005, who has become one of the world's most dominant unltra-running stars, is still active. In a recent trip to Las Vegas, he test ran a 1.7 mile loop course for 100 miles and over the back half moved up from ninth to a spot on the podium.

He said with some knee pain he almost dropped out after 18 miles and then the sun "got to him" at the 48, 50 and 65 mile marks but he didn't sit more than 10 minutes or so each time.

Pete admitted, "my time wasn't great, but it was a great confidence booster using a little experience to push through and be excited about the road ahead for races this year."

Sounds like those competitive juices are still flowing.
