SEVERAL ITEMS

Major General Tim Orr, Iowa National Guard Adjutant General and a Boone native, BHS-78, will retire May 1 after 40 years of service, 10 overseas and 30 in Iowa. He was first appointed to the position by Governor Chet Culver in 2009.
His parents, who both have passed, were Jeannine and Roger Orr, both BHS grads.

Former Boone resident Clarice Sapp, wife of former Toreador baseball coach, Bill Sapp, and mother of BHS grads, Dick, Bob and Jackie, will be 90 on April 3.
A card party has been initiated. Here is her address: 3801 Grand, #207, Des Moines, IA 50312.

First word on a coming class reunion.
Larry Kelley, BHS-64, informs us his class will be meeting for their 55th on Sept. 20-21.
Friday night at Puntenney's home and Saturday night at Cedar Pointe, where he promises Belluci's pizza will be available.
Also, Larry said he may attempt a Tel-Star type reunion for that time to provide some music. More details will be coming.

Apparently, the People's Clothing store has been sold. Is there any connection there with the Boone Theatre group?

CATCHING UP

Still on the unfamiliar lap top so please excuse any miscues.
An abundance of "catch up" items: (1) Glad to hear from '53 classmate, Margaret (Peg) Oxenford Kooser. She is living in Baton Rouge, LA. but plans a Boone visit in the near future. (2) Thanks to Diane Webb Lewis, BHS-65, for remembering me on my birthday. Thanks to many others who sent emails or cards or contacted me in any way. Thank you. (3) The recent State Boys Basketball Tournament reminded me of a fact some locals may not realize. Yes, the Toreador boys won a state championship in 1931, beating Muscatine in the final, 16-11, but there's more. Boone High also won boys state championships in 1920 and 1921, prior to the establishment of the Iowa High School Athletic Association. In the title games, it was BHS over Spirit Lake, 20-15 in 1920 and BHS over LuVerne, 23-10, in 1921. (4) Speaking of the boys state tourney, Boone's strong connection to that event continues. Of course, many Boone and Boone area employees of the IHSAA manage the tournament. In addition, three Boone natives were involved. Father Craig Collison, BSH-70, of Pocahontas is still one of the announcers, Rich Collison, BHS-80, of Algona, officiated in the meet and Gary Long, BHS-73, of the Quad City area, is the stat room  coordinator. (5) Boone's Alan Beste will soon be retiring as Executive Director of the IHSAA and he and Donna plan to remain in Boone. His successor has been named. Dr. Tom Keating, currently the President of Cedar Rapids Xavier, will replace Al. Tom has been at Xavier since 2004 and previously served schools at Maxwell and Dubuque Wahlert. (6) Jim Goodrich, the former United Community basketball star, who once was the all-time leading scorer in IHSAA history, came "home" for his high school coach Tom Nutt's funeral. For 35 years, Jim has been an Iowa City area resident associated with Athletes in Action. He ministers, when asked, with numerous University of Iowa athletes and coaches and indicated close relationships recently with football star Noah Fant and basketball star, Joel Wieskamp. (7) The MIC insurance group, located next door south of the old Redeker location, will be moving. The building they currently occupy has been leased by someone else? (8) Rumor has it that the old Peoples Clothing store has been sold. Did notice some action there recently.
K-----K
BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: David Rankin, 63, Boone...…..Betty Jean Audlehelm, 89, Ames. Married Don Audlehelm in 1949. The couple arrived  in the Boone area in 1960 and eventually settled in Napier. A son and daughter survive...…...Catherine Brierty (Pat) Lynch, 99, Boone. Born in Boone. BSH-38. Earned a nursing degree and joined the military where she became a nurse and captain. Worked later as an RN at the Boone County Hospital. Married Earl Lynch in 1949. A son, Robert, and daughter, Patricia Ames, both of Boone, survive...…….Tom Nutt, 75, Boone. United Community grad. Earned a degree from the University of Northern Iowa and was a teacher/coach for 35 years at United and later, in the Boone schools. Led a pair of United boys basketball teams to state tournament qualification. Wife, Linda, daughter. Wendy Patterson, and sister, Carolyn Bass, all of Boone survive. Another daughter, Kathy McCarey, of Illinois also survives.

DISJOINTED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

     Darn computer!!
Acting up again. Then too, spring break, much better weather and basketball, basketball, basketball.
O.K., forget those excuses. I'll go to Jo's laptop, which really throws me for a loop.
I'm not going to fight it long. Just long enough to acknowledge you "out there" are not forgotten.
Just one Boone Connected Death could be found...…..Harlan Wagner, 88, Des Moines. He has a surviving brother-in-law, Frank Milani, of Madrid.
Due to the various circumstances, that's it this time.
     Enjoy this improved weather.

THANK YOU ALL

Another birthday is history and I thank all of you who contacted me in that regard, personally, by email or by card etc. etc.. It is so much appreciated to know that there are so many great friends "out there".
I enjoyed some nice "outings" with family and friends, highlighted by some great meals, including featured deserts.
There was one problem. I understand trips were made to Walmart, Bomgaars, Ace Hardware, Boone Hardware, HyVee, Fareway and even some out-of-town outlets seeking enough candles for the cake.
Unfortunately, combined......the proper number were never obtained......fell far short of reality. Oh well! The candleless cake was very good anyway.

Remember 1955?  (1) Did you hear that the post office is thinking about charging seven cents just to mail a letter?  (2) If they raise the minimum wage to $1 an hour, nobody will be able to hire outside help. (3) Who would ever think that gas would cost 25 cents a gallon? I guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.
How come a whale swims all day, only eats fish and drinks lots of water but is still fat? How come a rabbit spends a life running and hopping but only lives 15 years but a tortoise doesn't run at all and barely does anything and yet, lives 150 years?
Finally, remember this.......if at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Tom Nutt, 75, Boone.......John Maul, 66, Boone.......Marjorie Sellers, 95, Boone. Worked for the Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern Railroad, moved to California for a few years but returned to Boone and worked for Dr. Mandersheid for 26 years. A son and son-in-law survive.

BUCKY? HE WAS A TEACHER TOO

In regards to our recent conversation about 1940's Boone teacher/coach, Frank "Bucky" O'Conner, Vern Modeland, BHS-50, wrote, "before you let memories of Bucky O'Conner slip away to the Kelleys Korner archives, don't let another far-reaching achievement be forgotten by those of us who maybe weren't "into" sports. Bucky had another teaching assignment. He was the Driver Training Instructor for many lucky BHS students in the 1940's and 50's. Keep your attention on the road. Be prepared for any, such, emergency maneuver. Learn how to shift gears in the abused Ford donated for the school's course by Moffitt's. Class courses that included the laws of Iowa and those of physics. Depth perception, speed demands for merging, stopping and such. After completion of the course, we all went to the county court house to take and pass the state driver's license test. We, who survived learning how to drive and keeping things we learned front of mind for a lifetime, we owe, at least part of that to Bucky O'Conner. I wonder just how many of us were lucky enough to get through many, many thousands of miles in all kinds of weather and situations without a single ticket. That list includes me. Thanks, Boone High and Bucky."
P.S. Vern indicated that he can still drive, relatively safely, at 87 and has an Arkansas license good until 2025. However, he says his pain and meds are a constant struggle in his life these days. The Kornerman and others who remember Vern are thinking of him and hoping that some of those stuggles he's enduring are, at least, lessened, somewhat, by modern medicine and our prayers.
P.S. 1 - The Kornerman says, "isn't it ironic that Bucky was actually killed while driving on an Iowa highway?" Vern stated, "as I recall, he tried to miss hitting a dog and, attempting to do that was the mark of a good driver instructor."
I, the Kornerman, thought it was some kind of bird in flight (a pheasant maybe) that came in contact with his vehicle and caused the distraction.
K-----K
Great to hear from Bill, BHS-55, and Janaan Munson Kennedy, BHS-54, from Barrington, IL this week. They sent the Kornerman  a very interesting article they had clipped from a newspaper. It was written by Joyce Terhaar, a board member of the American Society of News Editors and a former executive editor of the Sacramento, CA Bee.
The story outlined several good "talking points" as to why newspapers will be sadly missed as they "slide into decline." In fact, the banner line for the story is "Communities suffer when papers die or slide into decline."
The Kennedy's knew the Kornerman would be interested, due to our personal feelings in that regard that we've expressed at various times in the Korner.
They wrote, "the enclosed article reminded us of your comments in regard to the decline of the Boone News Republican. Boone is not unique in that regard. We appreciate your fine efforts to continue to bring local news to many of us. Keep up the good work you do."
K-----K
We discussed in a recent edition the Boone High Fight song and mentioned that we weren't really aware of the one currently being used.
Tom Peterson, BHS-67, came through with the  words to the current fight song.
Get in and win that game, you Toreadors
Get in and raise our colors high
Get in and fight for fame you Toreadors
And blaze our banner cross the sky
Get in and fight with might for green and red
So we can hold our heads up high
Boone High, Boone High, Boone High Fight
     V-i-c-t-o-r-y
Remember, we will stand and we will shout
     Ever mighty, ever stout
     Best in all the land
     BOONE HIGH

WE'RE LOYAL TO YOU BHS

Max Moore, BHS-46, wrote from a chilly California, "sure enjoyed the article on Bucky and Pinky. Bucky is a legend. Thanks for your reporting. I look forward to Wednesday's and Saturday's. Will the BNR ever come back? Did anyone take over Mrs. Fox popcorn stand? I miss things like that. I understand Boone is moving south. That's the trend it seems. We've had our coldest winter in 50 years. I freeze if it gets below 65. Keep reporting Mo and good health."
Max also sent a copy of the old BHS fight song. Remember? "We're loyal to you BHS. To you we'll be true, BHS. We'll back you to stand 'gainest the best in the land, for we know you will stand, BHS."
These days....well, for quite a few years now, there's been a different fight song. The newer one, if I recall, was written by a Boone optometrist. Wasn't he a Doctor Johnson? His rendition is still being used today as far as I know. Then, of course, there's this "modern" Dors business which most of us older grads don't like. Times and ideas do change.
K-----K
Referring to our recent memories of Dr. Longworth, Gary Knox wrote, "I remember him well. He patched up this farm kid multiple times. Ripped two fingers in the well pump v-belt, ran a knife into my hand whittling, a nail puncture in my scalp from a board, measles, mumps, chicken pox, appendictis, bronchitis to name a few. Our house was quarantined when my sister got scarlet fever. Dr. Longworth came to the house to treat her. And guess who handled the initial stages of my wife's pregnancy my senior year at Iowa State? The doctor who delivered me. We drove from Ames to Boone for the best....Dr. Longworth."
K-----K
Dr's son, Richard, wrote, "thanks so much for the kind memories of my father. He loved medicine, mostly because of stories like yours, in which he gave a young man a shot at a long and full life."
"I wish I knew if there were more copies of the history of Boone County medicine that John Kueck mentioned. I know I gave the Historical Society copies of that book and of the update that Dr. Greco wrote and I hope they survived the recent turmoil there. I know that copies were also donated to the Boone County Hospital. I'd bet that other doctors, of that time, also had copies and they or their descendants may have copies. I've got a copy, of course, but its a family heirloom now and I'm not parting with it."

NO SURPRISE......AT ALL

Its not a big surprise to many.......but it may be to you.
Among others, the entire BHS class of 1964 is going ga-ga over the news, via facebook and email, AND none of them seem completely surprised, even though many of them have "moved on." In fact, many are adding to the superlatives their old hometown is receiving.
Here's the story: An outfit called Realtor.com annually issues a report on the Top Ten Affordable Small Towns in the USA Where You'd Actually Like to Live. The 2019 edition has been issued and is Boone, Iowa in the Top Ten? Pshaw.......we are NUMBER ONE IN THE ENTIRE NATION.
According to the cover story by Lance Lambert (the Kornerman is curious if he's ever been to Boone in person), small town America is making a big comeback due to great affordability and a simpler way of life.
He cites several reasons for that thought.....home prices are more reasonable, crime is lower, public schools are "decent," and "you might actually know the first and last names of your neighbors. Then, too, there are "extras" that may add to those positives.
More specifically, Lambert points to the fact that Boone's median home cost is $134,500 with a median house income of $57,906 and two bedroom apartments that can be rented for $600 a month.
Tacked on as "extras" are the Pufferbilly activities and a close proximity to Ames, which is beneficial to Boone in many ways. Even some of those '64 classmates added to the list......."how about the Boone Valley Brewery, skiing at Seven Oaks, the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad, the Mamie Eisenhower birthplace, Ledges State Park and the general beauty of the central Iowa area."
Lambert says 500 locales in the nation were studied before the final ten were announced.
After BOONE, NUMBER ONE came Van Wert, OH; Decatur, IN; McPherson, KS; Los Alamos, NM; Austin, MN; Williston, ND; Mexico,MO; Merrill, WS and Andrews, TX in that order.
We ALL knew it after all.........didn't we?
P.S. In 2018, Logansport, IN. was number one and Spencer, IA number 10.
K-----K
Old bud, Bernie Lewiston, who worked with the old Kornerman at KWBG those many years ago filled in some blanks regarding another K-dub alum, Fred Lark, we've wondered about.
Bernie wrote, "Freddie and I graduated from Iowa State University on the same day in May of 1966. At the time, I was finishing school, was doing the 6-9 AM shift on KASI in Ames, and we were living in University Village, north of the campus. Freddie, his wife, and daughter lived in Pammel Court, just north of the campus. About once a week, Freddie and his daughter would walk up to our place for a visit in the late afternoon, and then I would drive them home. His radio stations are  in Lewistown, not Lewiston, MT. He was in Ogden last year for the 60th high school class reunion, but I didn't get to see him. I did visit with him on the phone. He's the same old Freddie. According to a website, he is now living in Arizona."
Larry Adams, BHS-65, added the fact that Fred purchased KXLO-AM in Lewistown in 1972, took possession in 1973 as President/General Manager. In 1975, he created KLCM-FM. He started his broadcast career at KWBG in 1958 with the "Listen to the Lark" show and the "Morning Country Boy Farm Show." He pursued his radio career in Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming before settling in Montana. In addition to his radio work, he operated a management consultant service and was an experienced private pilot. In 2007, Fred's wife, Lynnette, joined the radio family as part of the sales/marketing team.

Woe is me. I forgot one anniversary and want to forget another.
I forgot to mention in the Wednesday edition that it was March 6, 2010, when we started the Korner blog online. Of course the first real Korner started in the winter of 1962 and appeared weekly in the Boone News Republican.
The other "forget"? It comes up Monday, March 18 and its either 48 or 84. Can't remember which.

STILL CONNECTED WITH HAWK BASKETBALL

Former Boone Toreador boys basketball coach, Frank "Bucky" O'Conner, still has connections with University of Iowa basketball. That's 50 plus years after he was head coach of the Hawkeyes in the 1950's.
Here's the skinny: During a recent 31-year period, one of Bucky's grand nephews, Jim O'Conner, was a walk-on UOI player, 1988-92, and three more of his great-nephews served as student managers for the Hawkeye team.......Tom O'Conner, 2009-14; Pat O'Conner, 2013-17; and Brendan O'Conner, 2015, to the present.
Bucky, who died in a tragic auto accident, April 22, 1958, at the age of 44 was married to Jane O'Conner and the couple had one daughter, Kathy.
K-----K
If you viewers know the Kornerman, you know that there will be "more" to this story. Its an exciting story to relate.
Bucky O'Conner was a graduate of Newton High School, who played basketball at both Newton and at Drake University where he served as team captain his senior year.
O'Conner coached at BHS, with some service also at Boone Junior College, from 1940-42. In 1943, during the late stages of World War II, he joined the Army Air Corps, eventually serving in Japan and attaining the rank of captain.
In 1947, after the war had ended, he returned to BHS/BJC and in 1948, guided the Toreador boys basketball team to the state tournament where they defeated Carroll but lost to Ankeny.
Later, in 1948, he joined the State University of Iowa athletic staff as freshman basketball coach and head men's golf coach. When he went to Iowa City, Bucky's star BHS player, Bob "Pinky"  Clifton, BHS-48, followed him. Later, another Toreador, Paul Stark, BHS-50, joined the Hawkeye team.
Both Rollie Williams and "Pop's" Harrison served as head coach of the Hawkeye men's basketball squad in the 1950-51 season but both were forced to step away due to illness. O'Conner was tabbed to take over for the final 11 games of the 1950 season. His team posted a 6-5 record.
Beginning with the 1951-52 season, O'Conner was named the "official" head Hawkeye coach. His final season prior to his death was the 1957-58 campaign.
Hawkeye basketball fans surely remember Hall of Fame coaches Ralph Miller, Lute Olson and George Raveling, along with Sharm Scheuerman, Dr. Tom Davis, Steve Alford and Fran McCaffrey. BUT, the Kornerman is here to ask, "despite the fact he had a shortened career, shouldn't Bucky O'Conner be given consideration when trying to select the Iowa men's basketball best all-time coach?"
Here are some facts: Percentagewise, O'Conner registered a .659, 114-59. Just two Iowa coaches surpassed that......"Pops" Harrison was .700 from 1943-50 and Ed Rule was .696 from 1902-07. Dr. Tom Davis was just shy of  O'Conner at .658 on a record of 269-140 in 13 years.
O'Conner worked 7 1/2 years, Harrison seven and Rule five. Granted, Davis longer tenure, and almost as good a win percentage, would be a plus for him.
But remember too, that Iowa has had just three men's teams in history earn a berth in the NCAA Final Four. O'Conner coached two of those three. Olson had the other. In the Big Ten, three Iowa coaches each won two conference championships......Miller, Sam Barry and O'Conner. Two of Bucky's teams also finished second in  the Big Ten. Two Big Ten titles and two runnerup finishes in his 7 1/2 years.......not too shabby.
O'Conner's 1955 team, the Fabulous Five of Scheuerman, Bill Seaberg, Carl "Raisin" Cain, Bill Schoof and Bill Logan, earned a berth in the NCAA Final Four. They lost the third place contest, 75-54 to Colorado. A year later, the same group faced Bill Russell and San Francisco in  the NCAA title game and lost, 83-71.
In still another Boone connection, believe it or not, the star of that Colorado team that defeated the Hawks in 1955 was Jim Ranglos, who, later, in the 1960's, became another Boone High School basketball coach.

Heard from Pam Claussen this week. She was seeking information on what used to be a funeral home built in 1870 and located at 728 Linn Street.
The Kornerman replied that Elsie M. Lawrence was associated with Wallen and Roland Undertaking Co. prior to purchasing the home of Judge Stevens at 728 Linn in May of 1925 and making it into a funeral home. By 1927, Elsie was the only licensed undertaker in Boone County.
Pam lives in Marshalltown so we had to ask about her tornado experience. She replied, "I did escape. I woke up from a nap at 3 p.m., glanced out the south windows and saw my neighbors outside watching the sky. I didn't hear the siren. So, I went outside to see what was going on. No place to hide, except in the bathtub. Just a crawl space below our apartments. The tornado missed us by three blocks."
In further study, Pam discovered that Elsie Lawrence died in 1959 at age 88 in Boone and is buried in Linwood. In 1895, her family had moved near Pilot Mound and a year later, settled in Boone. She had the proper credentials.....graduating from an embalming school in Des Moines and taking post grad work in Chicago.

PROGRESS WAS MADE

Despite the less than ideal weather and various other conflicts, a nice crowd attended the Boone County Historical Society meeting Tuesday.
     Progress was made.
The temporary Board of Directors can rest easier now. Their great contribution, as a group, has ended. A brand new, permanent 14-member Board of Directors was elected to race the BCHS back to a more normal existence.
The new member officers are: President - Michael Waterbury. Vice-President - Shirley Walrod, Secretary - Sandra Devin and Treasurer - Judy Russell. The other board members are Larry Adams, Linda Blakely, Curt Condon, Joe Devin, Karl Jungbluth, Janet Krengel, John Stephenson, Bill Lusher, Scott Smith and Paula Vaughn.
The last previous regular meeting, held in January, was recessed after the board, that was serving at that time, resigned enmasse. Volunteers stepped forward to temporarily provide aid until this new board was elected.
It can't be emphasized enough......the wonderful, voluntary service the temporary board provided. Without those five individuals stepping forward.......?
The group  raised enough money to pay some insurance and utility bills and re-established memberships that had been terminated by the previous permanent board. They also organized the Tuesday meeting for the board reorganization.
At the Tuesday meeting, a first giant step to regain those lost memberships and collect new ones was taken. Much progress was made.

Mark Campbell, BHS-67, recently posed the question, "whatever happened to Fred Lark, a KWBG alum?"
When the Kornerman had no recent answer, Carolyn Ades Durham, BHS-58, provided some help. Carolyn said, "Fred owns a radio station in Lewiston, MT.. We were friends and went out there to see Fred and family several years ago and, in fact, we moved out some 70 miles east of Lewiston for a time. He has two daughters that work for him at station KXLO. When he was at KWBG in the late 50's, he had a "Country Boy Farm Show.""
The Kornerman remembers working with Fred but I've only seen him one time in recent years. An Iowa State alum, he has served on a committee of some kind at Iowa State for a number of years and I saw Fred one time when he came back here for a meeting of that committee at ISU. I know he was a pilot and had his own plane but, as I indicated before, the thing about Fred that most impressed me was his singing talent. I know he made a few records and I was very impressed with his rendition of the "St Louis Blues."

The Kornerman was a KWBG employee way back from 1953-55 and again from 1957-70 and I'm so pleased to hear that the station has been nominated for a prestigious National Association of Broadcaster's award.
Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding annual commitment to community service.
This year, KWBG is one of 50 finalists for that award, 10 of which will be crowned on April 9 at Las Vegas in the midst of the annual NAB convention.
Hopefully, our own KWBG, which has been a member of the Boone community since 1950, will be one of the "top ten in the nation."
P.S. HAPPY 69TH ANNIVERSARY TO "BG"........IT WAS MARCH 2, 1950 WHEN THE STATION BEGAN ITS SERVICE TO BOONE AND CENTRAL IOWA.
