MORE UNI TALK (Part one)

Continuing a discussion about what is now the University of Northern Iowa.

In a recent edition, the Kornerman had pondered a change in our obituaries. More mature (older) individuals who have passed but attended the Cedar Falls based school were there when it had a different name. As a result, we would always add (now UNI) for clarification.

We were wondering if it was about time to forget that special identification. Apparently not.

Tom Canfield, BHS-53, wrote, "I attended three education institutions to get my Masters Degree!!! (1) Iowa State Teachers College. (2) State College of Iowa and (3) the University of Northern Iowa.

Then there was this from Mark Campbell, BHS-67. "As for UNI and Cedar Falls, I worked for State Police Radio and had a floating shift so I drove a school bus part-time. One of my runs was picking up driver ed students from Cedar Falls High School and transporting them to the driving range at UNI. It was a marvelous training facility with stop lights and even a skid pan. All the instructors were wrestling coaches. Keith Young and Gene Doyle were the most memorable. Keith was the first four-time National Champion back in the late 40's, early 50's. Alas, he died a few years ago of complications from alzheimers. I met him at my brother-in-laws installation in the UNI Hall of Fame. My brother-in-law is Ken Snyder, who took the Division 2 champon

YOU DECIDE

WARNING: The following will become very technical......maybe even nit-pickionish.

Several editions back, the Kornerman reviewed the Boone baseball situation, in regards to great players through the years.
Actually, my intent was to highlight just Boone High School in that regard. But then, I expanded a bit with talk about community baseball.
The original question was, "has Boone ever had a Major League player?"
I explained in the Korner that day that Boone High School has never boasted such a player. I also implied that, "although that was true, there had been some Boone/Major League connections through the years."
What has revived my interest in this is a recent email from Lester Ross, BHS-67. Here's what Lester wrote, "Boone's only Major Leaguer, Jimmy Archer, played what position on the field? Visit the Historical Society to see this card and find the answer to the question next week. I no longer do baseball cards, but I could not resist. I bought this one for the Boone Historical Society. RARE HELMAR baseball card: #11 JIMMY ARCHER Chicago Cubs (set break). ONE I FORGOT. Gerald Edward McNertney (born August 7, 1936) was an American former professional baseball player and coach. He played in the Major Leagues as a catcher in 1964 and then again, from 1966-73. He was born in Boone Iowa and is a Gilbert High School and Iowa State University grad."
Here was the Kornerman's reply,"to be COMPLETELY honest, Boone has NEVER had a Major League player. Archer, a catcher, played in the Major Leagues. HOWEVER, he was not a Toreador and not even an Iowa native. He did marry a Boone girl.......that's his only connection here. As you indicated, McNertney was born here in Boone but never spent much time here. He was from the Gilbert area. By birth, maybe you could claim he was a Boone guy who made the big leagues. Then too, Boone did have a team, the Boone Greyhounds, that played in the Iowa State League in 1905 and four members of that Boone team, eventually, made it to the big leagues. But again, saying they were Boone guys may be stretching it a bit. They simply played here for a Boone team during some seasons and may have lived here during those seasons."
So there you have it........it gets pretty technical, which means you can lean any direction you wish..........or, perhaps, "I don't care."
When wondering if Boone ever had a Major Leaguer, here are your options.
     1. Jimmy Archer.........he married a Boone girl.
     2. Jerry McNertney........he was born in Boone but, basically, a Gilbert area resident.
     3. Several Boone "imports" played for a Boone team in 1905 and, eventually, did play briefly in the Major Leagues. They may have lived here during the baseball season.
To add to the fire a little bit here........perhaps, rather than Jimmy Archer Field,.......it should or could have been Jerry McNertney Field which would have, at least, some similar accuracy to the Archer claim.
P.S. McNertney had a nine-year Major League career, catching for the Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Seattle.

DO WE OR DON'T WE?

It always surprises the Kornerman when certain "out of the way" items attract attention.

In the last edition, as an afterthought, (see how it was located at the very end), I tossed out my wonderment about whether the time has come to eliminate (now UNI) from further editions.

Every so often, especially in obituaries, an older person who has passed, once attended State Teachers College and when that occurs and is mentioned,  I usually try to explain that's the same school as the one we now refer to as UNI, the University of Northern Iowa.

As time passes and people get older, we have fewer and fewer such mentions. Is this explanation still needed?

Since I timidly brought this up, here are some responses I've received.

Martha Warrick Hilsabeck, BHS-62, wrote, "thought it was interesting that you mentioned Iowa State Teachers College. I ran into Lyn Dighton, one-time BHS teacher and wrestling coach, this morning and he was wearing an Iowa State Teachers College T-shirt. I commented that it couldn't have been from when he went there. He laughed and explained that he went to three colleges and never left the Cedar Falls campus. It was Iowa State Teachers College when he started, then the State University of Iowa and finally, the University of Northern Iowa........all within four years."

Jerry Manriquez, BSH-57, wrote, "Iowa Teacher's College was named the State College of Iowa when I attended there in 1964 and 66. The state was trying to think of a name for the school when it became a University. We had ISU - Iowa State University and UOI - University of Iowa or UI. I remember someone suggesting that we name the school IOU - Iowa's Other University."

I guess the Kornerman will continue to explain that Teachers College or whatever is (now UNI).

HORRORS

Modern technology. Isn't it wonderful? Well......yes, when things are clicking. BUT, what a pain when problems develop. We're just too darn dependent on these "conveniences" and when they go awry, our world seems to turn upside down.
Straight out of the night, our computer balked.....just went dead. We were "out of business" for a period of time but, eventually, our mechanical "caretaker" revived things.
So, we're back again. I'm not sure the young man who provided resuscitation even knows what really happened but he kept "at it" and finally, a positive conclusion. For how long? Who knows?

The Kornerman just got to thinking and that can be dangerous of course. However, every time I have this situation I wonder if its no longer necessary. I mean lots of time has passed. I'm referring to UNI.........the University of Northern Iowa. There still are some folks who did attend that institution when it was Iowa State Teachers College so we usually include (now UNI).
Is that still necessary? I don't know......perhaps not......but I guess it doesn't hurt anything to continue the way we always have.

SEVERAL EVENTS RETURN TO NORMALCY

Hopefully, all of you Boone folks, near and far, are aware, by now, that the Pufferbilly extravaganza dates have been changed. The event will take place a month earlier than in the past.
For several years, the schedule was standard........the last few days of Labor Day weekend in early September.
Now, for a myriad of reasons, most which seem to make good sense, the "new" Pufferbilly days will be August 6-8.
Can you believe it? This will be the 44th Pufferbilly and every one of those years, it seemed there were certain citizens who proclaimed...."it will never last."
Most of the traditional portions of past celebrations.....the parade etc. etc..., and maybe even some new ones, will still take place.
Pufferbilly has always been a popular time for BHS/BSH classes to have school reunions back in the old home town.
The 1965 group has informed us that they will plan to meet on Friday, August 6, at the Pufferbilly Entertainment Center, Ninth and Keeler, at 6 p.m., followed by a get-together Saturday, August 7, at Cedar Pointe Golf and Country Club from 6 to 10 p.m. to enjoy hors d' oeuves and chatter from 6 to 10 p.m. AT NO COST. Cash bar.
Advance notice of your plan to attend would be appreciated.......text Lynn Pestotnik 515-230-9371.
K-----K
It is great to return so many events to normalcy after the pandemic crisis.
The Boone Municipal Band is back. They had their initial Wednesday night concert at the McHose Park Pavillion last week before an appreciative but, somewhat, small crowd. Sadly, many folks simply had no knowledge of its return because of our very limited communication opportunities.
We, at the Korner, do what we can to "spread the word" about such events.
There's another concert tonight at 7:30 p..m. at the Pavillion so........plan to attend and don't be hesitant in contacting your friends, neighbors and family members about the opportunity to enjoy a great musical program.
K-----K
There's just one very sad note pertaining to the band.. Late last week in Cedar Rapids, Boone native, Jim Harken, 47, passed away after a long battle with colon cancer.
So many fans of the Municipal Band will remember Jim as the guy wearing the tuxedo and doing all the announcing at the Boone Iowa Band Festival. He honored us with some 30 years of this duty.
     A more complete obituary follows.
K-----K
After many months of planning and construction, the "Green Space," located in downtown Boone at the northwest corner of Eighth and Story was formally dedicated last week.
An estimated crowd of 500 crammed the middle of the downtown area for the ceremony.
With green grass, some benches, a small stage and many flags flying, it will be a nice gathering place for future events. Its a nice addition to the downtown area.

HOW DID WE SURVIVE?

One of those days when the Kornerman doesn't know what will be coming out of these fingers. No real significant plans.
I receive numerous emails pertaining to all types of subjects. Maybe I'll just scour a few of them today.
Californian Max Moore, BHS-46, recalled some things I found interesting and humorous.
Max wrote, "my mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning. She would defrost hamburger on the counter and I used to eat it raw, sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli."
He added, "we played "king of the hill" on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked. These days, its a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $99 bottle of antibiotics, and then mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat."

Al Dannatt, BHS-66, sent a copy of a speech given to a group of baseball coaches by an old baseball coach who arrived at the podium with a rope attached to a wooden "home plate" wrapped around his neck.
The speech was titled, "17 inches."
He began by reminding that baseball leagues from Little League to Major League use a home plate that is 17 inches wide with no variation. Its always been that way.
Now, he says, there are lots of pitchers who seem to have a problem getting their pitches over that 17-inch plate consistently. "Now, maybe we should help them out by giving them an extra inch or two, at least once in awhile......maybe 18 inches or 19," the old coach said.
Noting that some of the coaches in the audience were scoffing at that idea, he went on to explain that part of the problem with our country these days is that we give too many "extra" inches in too many ways and on too many occasions.
He chided parents who seem willing to give their unruly children an extra "inch or two" and/or even
politicians who sometimes feel a need to "give a few extra inches" rather than holding a stiff line.
There were numerous other such instances mentioned pertaining to various aspects of life but he urged the coaches to "hold the line," and "stay strong." In other words, stay true to strong discipline.....because, in some cases its badly lacking, and our nation is suffering because of it.

CITY OF BOONE PURCHASES OLD FAREWAY BUILDING

Information, to this point, is rather sketchy but we do know that the Boone City Council, in a one-item agenda, voted unanimously last week to purchase the old Fareway building on the southeast corner of Seventh Street. Since the demise of the old Fareway many years ago, a couple of restaurants.....the Gigglin' Coat etc.... the Depot, had occupied that building for a period of time but it has been vacant for several years now.
We understand the purchase price was $150,000 and we understand there has been some opposition to this council proceeding.
The guessing game is underway as to the "next step." Will the city decide to demolish the building and the accompanying parking ramp or are other ideas being explored?
We should learn more as time passes.

A bit of very good news has arrived concerning the very popular band concerts provided by the Boone Municipal Band.
THE FIRST POST-PANDEMIC CONCERT IS THIS VERY NIGHT.....JUNE 2.........7:30 P.M. AT THE USUAL SPOT.....THE HERMAN PARK PAVILLION........ AND WE'RE TOLD THAT PLANS ARE UNDERWAY FOR AN ALMOST "TYPICAL" BAND SEASON AHEAD.
Each individual is invited to attend "as desired"......with or without mask........and via social distancing if you wish." You're invited to bring your lawn chairs.
More details about the season will soon be available.

The Kornerman realized "too late" that I had failed to mention in the last edition......the latest Ogden and Madrid school enrollment figures.
These are grade 9-11 figures, which are the basis for athletic classification during the 2021-22 school year.
Ogden is tied for the 212th largest high school in Iowa with 158 students in 9-11. Madrid is tied for 227th with 149.

Realizing that half or more of the Korner's viewers reside "out of state," I make an attempt to keep them informed of happenings in their old hometown but also, I like to promote our good old state of Iowa.....showing them "what they're missing" and how some former residents are making their way "back home."
The Des Moines Register recently had an article containing newly released preliminary census figures that you might find interesting.
We've mentioned before the huge population increase in the Des Moines Metro area.
While, overall, the figures show a state increase of 4,000, the Polk/Dallas county area alone showed an increase of 6,600.
     Individually, Waukee has added 2,031 residents, an 8.4% increase; Grimes has added 1,104, a 6.8% increase, Ankeny 2,720, a 4% increase; Norwalk 475, a 4% increase and Johnston, 504, a 2.2% increase.
In the last decade, four of the fastest-growing communities in Iowa are Waukee, Ankeny, Johnston and West Des Moines. Waukee has added 13,000 new residents, a 90% increase; Ankeny 24,000, a 54% increase; Johnston 5,800, a 34% increase and West Des Moines 12,000, a 22% increase.
Also, Grimes population grew from 8,200 to 15,900; Bondurant from 3,900 to 7,300 and Adel from 3,700 to 5,600 during that time.
