TIME WILL TELL

Remember that old phrase, "never the twain shall meet?"
Hey, I'm old. Why can't things be crystal clear and easy? No, instead, the Kornerman faces a real conundrum situation.
Here's the skinny. First, I'm so excited about many exciting future community projects.....the new elementary school, the proposed new wellness center, all of the new housing sprouting up in the community. That's all fine and good. Yet, these are not things that occur overnight. Time is involved. So, each day we get closer to these wonderful things to look forward too, I and others my age are also getting older.....day after day after day. So, a question remains. Will we have the good favor of watching these wonderful positives develop or will the quick passage of time derail such dreams. I guess some day we'll know.

Our recent mention of the preliminary census figures drew a response from Richard Longworth, BHS-53. He wrote, "if you look at Boone census data on Wikipedia, you'll see that the town passed 12,000 about the time we were born, in the mid-30's. It was 12,373 in 1940. Since then, it's only varied by a few hundred, never lower than 12,000, never higher than 13,000. This is astonishing stability. I wonder if there's any other town where the population has stayed so stable over the decades. As you note, places in Dallas County and closer to Des Moines are exploding. So many other small towns are shrinking. People move into Boone, of course, and other people leave, but the departures always seem to balance out the arrivals. There's a secret to this stability, and I wonder what it is."

Good to hear from Ken Aldag, BHS-54. He wrote, "your report on Ev Hickman indicated you weren't sure about his reporting at KWBG. Ev, who was one of my best friends at BHS and later at Drake University, dorm roommate for three years and best man at my wedding, started working for BG about 1953, our junior year at BHS. He arranged for many  of us, in speech classes, to do radio plays on the air. After graduation in '54, he attended Drake U., but would return to Boone on weekends to do disc jockey, news reading etc..I would hang out at the station on Sunday afternoons with him. He started working for WHO, as I recall, in his sophomore year at Drake. He was a great friend for about 70 years (we first met in junior high). We'll be making the trip back to Boone from California to be at the memorial service."
EDITOR'S NOTE:  Ev Hickman died November 21, 2019, at 83 years of age. There will be a gravesite service at 10 a.m. at Linwood Cemetery on September 4, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone.

Worked for the highway commission, Dotson Service Station in Ames, Morrow Oil of Boone and the Fareway  Warehouse for over 48 years. Retired at age 78. Survivors include his wife, son, Kevin, and daughter Kristine Marlow all of Ogden..........Larry A. Schroeder, 67, Boone. Born in Boone. BHS-72. Earned an associate's degree from DMACC. Graduated in 1975 from Cincinnati Mortuary School. Worked with his dad at Schroeder Funeral Home, Fifth and Story and then in 1986, opened his Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Sixth Street. WIN SOME, LOSE SOME

Preliminary 2020 census figures have been released. I, the Kornerman, will not dazzle you with all kinds of figures........again.......as I have in the past. However, there are a couple of things I will relate.
Statewide, the Des Moines Metro area grew by 17-percent which gave it the largest increase among all the midwest metro area.
Dallas County grew by 51%....yes, that's 51%........the fourth largest county increase in the nation.
Locally, Boone County grew from 25,306 occupants in 2010 to an estimated 26,715 now.
The city of Boone was listed at 12,661 in 2010 and now, stands at an estimated 12,242, a drop of 419.
These are preliminary estimates but really, I've often wondered how accurate census figures really are.

Our recent mentions of the Boone County Historical Society fueled some memories from John Kueck, BHS-61. John wrote, "my mother graduated from Ogden High School circa 1922. I contacted the school, and they were excited to receive her diploma and graduating photo (11 men and 10 women). My father-in-law, Don, was in the Navy during World War II, as a Navy correspondent, and was acquainted with Joe Rosenthal, the famous Iwo Jima flag-raising photographer. Joe gave Don an autographed copy of that famous photo that we recently auctioned for several thousand dollars. You never know what treasures are within your parents things. We also gave his Navy memorabilia to the Minnesota Military Museum. They have a government grant to build a new $13,000,000 museum with eight times more display area. They were excited about our donations. My wife Susan learned that her hometown county museum was looking for old yearbooks. They wanted to keep a complete historical set. She had a missing one that she donated. Our visit to the museum was a rewarding experience since we learned so much more about the museum. They had a file on Sue's family and also a file on her dad's World War II participation. The curator asked if she was in 4H and which club she belonged to. She answered that she was in 4H but couldn't remember the name of the club. The assistant was asked to look for her file and he found a 4H card with all the information about Sue, the club, "Town and Country," and all the ribbons she had won at the county fair. I was amazed at the extent of the county museum's collection and I am delighted that so much history is being preserved.
K-----K
Along that same line, the preservation of history, the Kornerman is happy to report that I have, this very morning, completed a project that has occupied the "back of my mind" for a long time.
As you may know, if you have followed the Korner in recent months, there has been a prevalence of Boone High School athletic history featured.........as I have known it for 70 years or so. Recently, I reached the end of my research and memories and compiled it all in one file.
My neighbor, Toreador basketball coach Rusty Hicks, was handed the file this  morning and assured me he would deliver it to Brett Collins the BHS Athletic Director.
So, I feel relieved. Many hours of work over many years, starting in the late 1950's, in my mind, has now come to a complete conclusion.  It doesn't matter who or if anyone ever looks at it but when I leave this life, I will personally know, rightly or wrongly, that there is a chance that material will be preserved rather than just "thrown to the winds."

A GREAT MATCH

Nick Collison liked the NBA Oklahoma City Thunder and the Thunder apparently liked him too. A perfect marriage and ...........it will continue.
Collison recently retired from a very successful 11-year NBA/Thunder career. He was a strong community supporter "off the court" and a fan favorite "on the court."
The Thunder wants him to continue representing the franchise so they've named him a Special Assistant to the Executive Vice-President and General Manager.
Collison never lived in Boone but he has strong connections to this community. His parents are both Boone High graduates......Judy Peterson Collison, BHS-72, and Dave Collison, BHS-72. All his grandparents lived here and there are still Collison relatives in the immediate Boone area.

With our recent mention of Ev Hickman, BHS-54, in the Korner, I fully expected to hear a response from Ozark Vern, Vern Modeland, BHS-50, and he didn't disappoint.
Here's what Vern had to say, "I don't recall he ever worked at KWBG. He came to WHO while I was there, circa 1955-65. First, as an announcer and then transitioned into the Jack Shelley news department about the time I left WHO for corporate communications work at Beech Aircraft in Wichita. That would have been about 1965. And, Shelley was the News Director at WHO, taking over when H.R. Gross moved on  to Washington D.C. and politics. (KK says, "I remember that.") Shelley served as an overseas correspondent briefly for WHO during World War II as did Farm Director Herb Plambeck. I recall many of Jack's stories on his hitch in the trenches (not literally). Everett was a news reader all right, and did very little "street" reporting as I recall. That wasn't his forte'. Can you believe how far journalism has sunken (no) since those days when it earned respect as truly the Fourth Estate?"
The Kornerman says, "I don't think I'll get into answering that last comment......its just too darn disheartening to talk about."

Worked for 42 years as a signal maintainer for the railroad. Retired in 2010. Married Lisa Cook in Boone in 2009. The couple were hosts for the Ledges Campground for many years. Survivors include his wife, five sons, two sisters and a brother.......Marjorie Ann Betten, 88, Johnston. Married Gene Holtorf in 1951 and they divorced. Married Bob Gunderson in 1973 and he lost his battle with cancer. Married Dwain Betten of Boone and he died in 2013. CATCHING UP

Time to look back....and forward.....to things we haven't previously mentioned in the Korner.
K-----K
We had a wonderful experience Saturday evening during Pufferbilly. The classes of 1965 were meeting over the weekend and had a gathering at Cedar Pointe. Jo and I were invited to attend.
Originally, I had one of those "we're too old" moments, but after receiving some encouraging calls, we decided to go....and that was a great decision.
We had a wonderful time seeing some familiar faces and learning about their families and life experiences.
One sad note. On one wall was a huge chart with pictures of every single member of that class who had passed.....and, unfortunately, it was quite a number. The mid-60's did boast some of BHS/BSH's largest classes ever.
We just stayed an hour or so and were very happy we attended.
K-----K
The Korner received a nice note from Pamela Byerly Watkins. Some time ago, we had mentioned in the Korner some material sent to us by Gary Knox, UC-58, regarding his connection to the Byerly family.
Pam wrote, "I am writing about your Boone, Iowa blog. While doing some online research on my family history, I came across your posts, and I have read many with great interest. Virgil Byerly Jr. was my father and Virgil George Byerly and Bessie, my grandparents. You have a fantastic memory because your story is correct about my dad shooting the winning shot from center court! I have not been in Boone for a very long time. I believe the last time I was there must have been in the 1980's when my grandmother died. My father passed away in 2006. After he left Iowa State, where he played basketball for the Cyclones, he served in the Air Force and also earned his MBA from Harvard Business School. He died in Atlanta,GA where he had resided since 1974."
The Kornerman says, "when I replied to Gary Knox I mentioned that Virgil Byerly, BHS-49, was a good Toreador athlete, who excelled in basketball but was also an outstanding half-mile runner. Later, he did play basketball for the ISU Cyclones. I was 14 years old when I attended that Boone game at the ISU Armory and, as a wide-eyed youngster, was thrilled by Virgil's half-court, winning field goal in a tournament game. Obviously, for me, it was an unforgetable moment."
K-----K
For John Hinz, BHS-64, and Tom Peterson, BHS-67, the 1959 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby brought back some "great" memories. They both sent me a video of the battle that year between Yankee slugger Mickey Mantle and Jackie Jensen of the Red Sox. Mantle won, 9-2, and they had another matchup years later with Mantle again victorious, 13-10.
K-----K
While we're on sports, Lester Ross, BHS-67, wrote, "Boone Boomers: What a great day! We played six hours of back-to-back-to-back baseball in 90-95 degree heat! We went 4-1 in the Iowa Games and WON THE BRONZE!! Great group of kids and coaches! Thank you APC for sponsoring us, Coach Nate, and Coach Kurt for all their hard work, but, most importantly, the friends and families that support those awesome kids."
The Kornerman says, "Lester was referring to participation in the Iowa Games a few weeks back."
K-----K
Everett (Ev) Hickman, BHS-54, was a year younger than the Kornerman and I have no recollection of the two of us working together at KWBG. In fact, I guess I'm assuming that he did do some work at BG sometime.
Anyway, he went on to Drake University after his high school days and had a long and very successful career announcing news on WHO radio. He had a great "news" voice and great knowledge of the news. Ironically, one of his most significant tributes occurred when he was selected the winner of the Jack Shelley Award......which I proclaim has always been awarded to Iowa's number one radio announcer. Shelley, of course, happened to be another Boone native who had excelled as a well-known news announcer at WHO years before Ev arrived there.
Ev died in November of 2019 and his daughter, Marianne Hickman, informs the Kornerman that a memorial service for her dad will be held on September 4 in Boone, Iowa. A graveside service will be held at Linwood Cemetery at 10 a.m. with a Memorial Service at the First Presbyterian Church  at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at the church immediately following the service.
