WIN SOME, LOSE SOME

Preliminary 2020 census figures have been released. I, the Kornerman, will not dazzle you with all kinds of figures........again.......as I have in the past. However, there are a couple of things I will relate.
Statewide, the Des Moines Metro area grew by 17-percent which gave it the largest increase among all the midwest metro area.
Dallas County grew by 51%....yes, that's 51%........the fourth largest county increase in the nation.
Locally, Boone County grew from 25,306 occupants in 2010 to an estimated 26,715 now.
The city of Boone was listed at 12,661 in 2010 and now, stands at an estimated 12,242, a drop of 419.
These are preliminary estimates but really, I've often wondered how accurate census figures really are.

Our recent mentions of the Boone County Historical Society fueled some memories from John Kueck, BHS-61. John wrote, "my mother graduated from Ogden High School circa 1922. I contacted the school, and they were excited to receive her diploma and graduating photo (11 men and 10 women). My father-in-law, Don, was in the Navy during World War II, as a Navy correspondent, and was acquainted with Joe Rosenthal, the famous Iwo Jima flag-raising photographer. Joe gave Don an autographed copy of that famous photo that we recently auctioned for several thousand dollars. You never know what treasures are within your parents things. We also gave his Navy memorabilia to the Minnesota Military Museum. They have a government grant to build a new $13,000,000 museum with eight times more display area. They were excited about our donations. My wife Susan learned that her hometown county museum was looking for old yearbooks. They wanted to keep a complete historical set. She had a missing one that she donated. Our visit to the museum was a rewarding experience since we learned so much more about the museum. They had a file on Sue's family and also a file on her dad's World War II participation. The curator asked if she was in 4H and which club she belonged to. She answered that she was in 4H but couldn't remember the name of the club. The assistant was asked to look for her file and he found a 4H card with all the information about Sue, the club, "Town and Country," and all the ribbons she had won at the county fair. I was amazed at the extent of the county museum's collection and I am delighted that so much history is being preserved.

Along that same line, the preservation of history, the Kornerman is happy to report that I have, this very morning, completed a project that has occupied the "back of my mind" for a long time.
As you may know, if you have followed the Korner in recent months, there has been a prevalence of Boone High School athletic history featured.........as I have known it for 70 years or so. Recently, I reached the end of my research and memories and compiled it all in one file.
My neighbor, Toreador basketball coach Rusty Hicks, was handed the file this  morning and assured me he would deliver it to Brett Collins the BHS Athletic Director.
So, I feel relieved. Many hours of work over many years, starting in the late 1950's, in my mind, has now come to a complete conclusion.  It doesn't matter who or if anyone ever looks at it but when I leave this life, I will personally know, rightly or wrongly, that there is a chance that material will be preserved rather than just "thrown to the winds."
