UNEXPECTED RESPONSES

A couple editions back, I noted that Tom Tays, BHS-78, had thanked the Kornerman for the support afforded Boone Campus Des Moines Area Community College in a recent Korner.
I wrote something to the effect that, "I appreciated the note and its nice to know someone is out "there."
I certainly never intended that to be a "pity party" or begging for replies. Nevertheless, I did get some response.
Texan Alan Dannatt, BHS-66 wrote, "we're here and appreciate everything you do" and John Hinz, BHS-64, apologized for not being "in touch" for awhile.
Then there was Doug McLeod, BHS-58, who wrote this from Marana, AZ. "sounds like you're feeling like the Maytag repair man (anybody remember him?). I'm sure the letter K on a lot of keyboards shows more than average wear. Everybody seems to blame everything on either Covid or the election or climate change so stand strong. You and Storm Lake are about all that's left of the Fourth Estate in Iowa. Down here we have the Tombstone Epitaph. I'm tired of saying it, and I understand why it is, but I can't imagine a town of 12,000 without a humming newspaper. You're an irreplaceable asset, Mo, and way more than a park bench."
Spike Condon, BHS-75, reported that he and Lori are back from Germany and is teaching Army Aviation Flight school as a Blackhawk instructor pilot at Fort Rucker, AL. He's been doing that in Germany and Alabama for some 30 years now.
He wrote, "I'm so sorry its taken so long to write you. I want to say a big Thank You for your bi-weekly Boone News. If it were not for you and you only, I wouldn't be able to keep up with the local news. Lori and I will be coming back to Boone in mid-October to see our dad's and visit with family and friends. Got to have a Belluci's pizza also. Don't think your column goes unnoticed! Far from it!!
P.S. Spike's dad, the famous Vern Condon, BHS-49, recently spent some time at Mercy in Des Moines for a partial hip replacement. He's in rehab at the Eastern Star Home, Courtyard Terrace, 715 West Third Street, Boone, Iowa 50036 and is "doing well." He's limited to two visitors at a time. A get well card would be very nice.

Great news late last week for a former Toreador.
Ryan Moorman, BHS-2002, the son of Terry and Marsha Moorman of Boone was announced as a 2021 Wartburg College athletic Hall of Fame inductee.
A 2006 Wartburg graduate, he was a four-year starting pitcher for the Knights. While collecting a career record of 23-8 with 10 complete games, 203 strikeouts, and a 3.27 earned run average in over 250 innings pitched, Moorman earned four consecutive All-Conference selections, including three first team honors and a pair of All-Region laurels.
A member of four consecutive Iowa Conference championship teams, he ranks among the top ten in many pitching categories in the Wartburg baseball record book, including the second best opponent batting average (.171) which was recorded in 2005, leading the Knights to a regional title and college world series appearance. During his senior season in 2006, Moorman tallied four complete games with two shutouts in 83.2 innings, finishing second in the conference with 61 strikeouts.
These days, Ryan works as the Vice President of Boone based Rolfes Co. He and his wife, Melissa, have two children, Stella and Hendrix.
The Kornerman is glad he returned to Boone.

THIS BHS ALUM HAS LIVED IN "HIGH COTTON"

The Kornerman has some very interesting material to report about a BHS alum who has had the pleasure of  "working" with some of our nation's best known celebrities.
Actually, John Hinz, BHS-64, coerced Mike Ahlstrom, BHS-61, into allowing the Kornerman to put into print some of his, "Mike's," work "adventures."
After some prodding, Mike eventually conceded to John with, "Mo is a special person, and I know he'd get a kick out of this. It's kind of Boone-oriented but I haven't wanted to come across as "look at me", or anything like that. I've just been a very fortunate guy."
Without too much detail, following are some of the fortunate acquaintances Mike was able to enjoy during his work with Sears.
Mike explained, "I was in charge of the Super Stars TV shows for Sears as part of that dream assignment. We taped those sports competitions in Rotunda, FL and Hawaii and we also did some shows taped in Malibu and Newport Beach, CA. Endless celebrity things are still hard for a Boone, Iowa boy to grasp.......playing tennis for two hours, just me and Farah Fawcett. Dancing with Wonder Woman Linda Carter is hard to forget or playing basketball with Bill Bradley, Dave Debusschere, Bob Cousy and Earl (the Pearl) Monroe."
Early in his Sears career, Mike was in charge of the Ted Williams Sports Advisory Staff. "It mean't, for that time, that I was Ted's boss and Sir Edmund Hillary's also. Ted and I became good friends and we "climbed some pretty good mountains together" as Sir Edmund wrote when he personalized his book for me. I don't why Sears paid me......I would have done this all for free."
Mike wrote, "one day I was at a fund-raiser in Chicago, where they had sports stars at every table. My chair was back-to-back with Ernie Banks and Bob Feller was at another near-by table. I turned around and said, "would a boy from Van Meter, Iowa sign a ball for a boy from Boone, Iowa?" Feller looked at me and said, "Boone? I was there last week." He said Mrs. Carolyn Carlson, who was, at that time, the Boone Public School District Nurse and a relative of President Eisenhower, was also a relative of his. He was in Boone visiting her."
"When I got that promotion to the Williams Advisory Staff, I drove out to meet and spend a week with Ted Williams at his fishing lodge on the Miramichi River in Blackville, New Brunswick, Canada. I knocked on the door and there he was, the greatest baseball hitter of all time. I said, "I come from a baseball town, and in my town, you're either a Stan Musial man, or you're a Ted Williams man. I've always been a Musial man. I really don't know why I said that, it just "came out." He got a big grin, and said "Mike......I like you already." That started a great friendship."
Mike concluded, "a year or two after that, we were in St. Louis for the National Collegiate Baseball Coaches Association convention. Ted said he'd heard there was a good restaurant in St. Louis. We pulled  up and Stan Musial was waiting for us. Ted hadn't forgotten what I said to him that first night we met at his lodge. It was Stan's restaurant and there I am, a boy from Boone, Iowa, having dinner with Ted Williams and Stan Musial in Stan's restaurant. Heaven.......just heaven."
EDITOR'S NOTE: I guess none of us ever know what this life will bring. Mike's great experiences, of course, remind me of the opportunity the Kornerman had for eight years to induct some of our greatest  sports stars......Tom Landry, Arnold Palmer, John Wooden.......and many others into the National High School Hall of Fame. Mike Ahlstrom and the Kornerman......a couple of pretty lucky guys.

Question of the week: Do regular dogs see a police dog and think, "oh no, it's a cop."

HE LIKED THE DMACC SUPPORT

Tom Tays, BHS-78, responded to our recent tribute to DMACC. He wrote, "thanks for emphasizing the value of having the DMACC athletic programs based at the Boone campus. This is under appreciated in the community. You also made reference to the locals who did the "heavy lifting" to bring this about. Thumbs up to the Kornerman. In our family albums, I still have the pictures taken at the party celebrating the Bears first ever win in basketball. My mom and dad hosted the party at our home at 1135 Garst Avenue. I was just a little kid but I knew it was a big deal. And thanks for publishing Kelley's Korner. I always look forward to your updates. Best regards."
EDITORS NOTE: I, the Kornerman, almost always sit down at the computer each Wednesday and Saturday and try to provide some type of Boone area news, good or bad, to anyone willing to take a look. Sitting alone and pondering, sometimes you wonder.....Is anyone out there? or if so, Do they give a darn?
Its nice to receive notes like the one Tom provided. He was there and he saw something special, something he was interested in and appreciated. That's nice to know.

BUSY....BUSY

Here are some things "making news" in Boonetown these days.

      (1) Ogden's only grocery store was lost, via a fire, quite some time ago but Fareway has come to the rescue.
A new 8,000 square foot store will be built, hopefully, with completion by late 2022.
The Ogden community, of course, is "ecstatic" about this development.

     (2)  This week, the brand new DMACC Boone Campus Activity Center Open House and Ribbon Cutting ceremony was held.
The $6.5 million project will be used by DMACC's athletic teams as well as other DMACC Boone Campus students, faculty and staff.
     Here's that Fareway again......
The new facility is named "Fareway Fieldhouse" after a generous donation from the Boone based Fareway stores.
The facility includes two college-size basketball/volleyball courts with each court containing three 40' by70' baseball/softball batting cages that drop down from the fieldhouse ceiling. It also contains a state-of-the-art weight room, a contemporary sports medicine lab, an indoor golf performance center, storage space, office settings and a family room.
The Boone Campus Athletic Director said, "this new facility is a game-changer" in the recruting of student/athletes to Boone Campus."
This addition adds even more "fire" to what has already been a successful athletic program featuring  the defending national champion men's basketball team and softball and baseball teams that are perennial national contenders.
EDITOR'S NOTE: As the Kornerman has said many times......"Isn't our community so lucky to have this tremendous asset.....Boone Campus.......and, of all the DMACC facilities in the state.....Des Moines, Ames, Newton, Carroll etc.......how in the world was our campus the one selected to host ALL of DMACC's athletic teams?
Of course we old timers know the reason. It was the hard work and perserverence of a group of our citizens who were able to "pull the proper strings" to get and retain this valuable asset here.

     (3) Regarding the demolition of the old Boone Depot/Gigglin' Goat building and parking ramp, a contractor is expected to be awarded the project on September 27.

     (4) The area that will house the new elementary school will be graded as soon as the crops in that area are harvested. Constrict of Ames was awarded that contract.
That will be the main work completed before winter.

     (5) The BHS/Ryan classes of 1961 will be completing their reunion today at the Boone Senior Center and tommorrow (Sun) at Saints Cafe.
The classes of 1970 are meeting this evening at 6 p.m. at Cedar Pointe.
The classes of 1953 are meeting at 5 p.m. today at the Colorado Grill.

SOMETHING TO BRAG ABOUT

If you have followed my 60 plus years of work, whether at the Boone News Republican, KWBG, the Iowa High School Athletic Association or on my more recent Kelley's Korner blog, you surely realize that I, the Kornerman, is at my happiest when I can positively promote what I consider extraordinary news about our community in general or its occupants. I love those opportunities.
And, between you and me, as a newsperson, I'm also excited when I can do that before any other source grabs hold, now or later. For example, our death notices, many which are seen first on the Korner, ahead of today's slower media response.
KWBG radio does deserve credit. They posted this news on their website on August 30 but it may be overlooked by others and is certainly worthy of "added" recognition.
The famous Forbes magazine has ranked numerous Iowa employers as the best place to work in the state in 2021 and........on top.....number one. Des Moines Area Community College. No mention is made of how many employees are on staff at DMACC......just that they are deemed as  the number one place in Iowa to have a job.
DMACC President Rob Denson commented, "DMACC is proud to be recognized for the hard work of our faculty and staff, all to the benefit of our students and the companies who hire them, and the communities where they live."
Forbes created the ranking from an independent survey from a sample of more than 80,000 U.S.employees working for companies employing at least 500 people. All the surveys were anonymous, allowing participants to openly share their opinions about safety of work environment, competitiveness of compensation, opportunities for advancement, willingness to recommend their employer to others and the workplace response to COVID.
Completing the "Top Ten" list in Iowa were the University of Iowa Hospitals and clinics with 15,000 employees; Emerson Electric of St. Louis with 83,500; Principal Financial 10,500; Deere and Company of Moline, IL 69,634; the State of Iowa,  25,907; the YMCA based in Chicago 20,000; Nationwide Insurance 34,000; Iowa State University 16,413 and EM of St. Paul, MN 40,000.
You will note that some are listed "out of state." However, they do have a number of employees based in Iowa.
Congrats to DMACC, one of this communities biggest and best assets.
