IMPROVEMENT IS MUCH APPRECIATED

In the Kornerman's opinion, the Thursday, 7/25, edition of the Boone News Republican was the best we've been offered in a long, long time.
There were the usual obits and lots of area sports AND several other stories of BOONE interest.
     We were informed......
     (1) the Boone County Sheriff is backing his jailer who was involved in an altercation in Des Moines during a Good Guys car show.
     (2) We learned that Mayor John Slight and councilman B.J. McGinn will both seek re-election.
     (3) We found out that our new McDonald's is making progress in its rebuild and plans are being made for an Open House at the new facility in October.
     (4) We learned that, despite financial difficulties, our Boone YMCA remains open.
     (5) We learned there is a new audiologist in town and that the South Clinton watertower is receiving a new coat of paint.
     (6) We learned that the location of the old Sinclair station at Fourth and Mamie, next door north of Circle K, is being looked at as a possible site for a Scooter's coffee shop.
Folks, we haven't had that much Boone news in a single edition of the BNR for many months.
Kudos to Editor Logan Kahler and intern Michael Murrell. Hopefully, this will become a trend and we can expect similar extensive coverage in each edition. If the "regular" news is slow, how about lots of  "personal" stories about individual Boone citizens? Many of them have interesting stories to tell. Someone just needs to ask them about their work, their hobbies and their lifestyles.

GOLF ANYONE?

Some time back, the Kornerman reported the passing of Jack Teagarden, BHS-67, of Grand Junction. Jack was a great baseball catcher on a state championship Toreador team.
Now, we have received word that a son of Jack's, Kevin Teagarden, has purchased the Lakeside Golf Course, which is located just north of Highway 30, between Grand Junction and Jefferson, near Spring Lake.
Jack's widow, Fran Teagarden, commented, "it is the course Kevin grew up playing and Jack played there every minute he could for many years. It was always a dream of Kevin's to own that course and now its happened."
On Sunday, August 4, Kevin, on his course, will be hosting the first annual Jack Teagarden Memorial Golf Tournament.
Lots of former Toreadors and other friends of the Teagarden family are urged to attend.
Kevin has a facebook page, Lakeside National Golf Club, that has additional information about the course and the upcoming tournament with more details to come.

For quite a period of time, there have been rumors of a "possible" coffee shop of some kind to be located in that little strip mall on Marshall Street where Intensitee is also located.
Just noticed there's a new sign above one of those buildings (maybe where Godfathers was located at one time) that reads, "Jo Jo's Coffee Depot."

PAPER AIRPLANES AND BIG BOY

Paper airplanes. That's the main subject of today's offering.
John Hinz, BHS-64, in an email, included an amazing video. It appears to take place in a high school gymnasium before a nice crowd and it appears to be a paper airplane competition.
It shows a paper airplane, accompanied by a musical background, performing all kinds of stunts as if it were a REAL outdoor event featuring REAL aircraft. Its amazing to watch.
John wrote, "with our class reunion approaching, watching the attached video, somehow, reminded me of paper airplanes in school. While mine only specialized in nose dives, I think there were two in  our class who could have matched the one in the video........Jim Miles and Steve Mathis (an aerospace engineer and a pilot who has owned numerous planes and even his own hanger). So, Jim and Steve, how good were your airplanes?"
Numerous members of John's class received the email titled, "From 20th century rubber bands and salsa wood to 21st century model planes w/reversing props defying gravity."
If others have an interest, on Google, do this.......Pilotul iscusit1.mp4.

Lots of talk about Big Boy and its recent visit to Boone.
Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, wrote, "I've been reading about the Big Boy. I would be willing to wager I'm one of the few people alive today who, when six years old, rode in the cab from Boone to Denison. Then, my dad, picked me up and to Omaha I rode in the caboose. Don't remember a lot about it, except that I do remember."
The Kornerman had sent a video of Big Boy in action to Vern Modeland, BHS-50, and he replied, "thanks again Mo. Yes, I got the Denison site and its pictures. You also inspired to get my old journalism search days sniffing around. Guess what! Amazon.com even has Big Boy 1411 T-shirts available in UP livery. Delivered in time for your ride? Well, I don't know about that, but.......

BIG BOY NUMBER 4014

Vern Modeland, BHS-50, wrote, "while I'd love to be on board, I'd hope you'd tell me something about the steam engine, other than a nickname. Is "Big Boy" a Baldwin or some other make? Is it a 4-8-8-4 configuration, 4-6-6-2 or what? Railroad workers and fans likely would be pleased for some details."
The Kornerman understands the Big Boy has faced some flooding problems through Nebraska enroute from Cheyenne, WY to Omaha. However, as far as I know, it has now arrived in Omaha and the scheduled trip to Boone will take place on Monday, July 15 as scheduled.
Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in 1941. It was retired in 1961 after traveling well over a million miles while it was in service. The railroad reacquired the locomotive in 2013 and sent it to Cheyenne for restoration.
It has come to Omaha to participate in Omaha Railroad Days this weekend, which consists of a series of train-themed events including the ride from Omaha to Boone on a train pulled by a 1940's steam engine to cap off the celebration.
Tickets for the ride went from $400 to $750 with the proceeds benefitting the sponsoring Union Pacific Railroad Museum. After arriving in Boone, the passengers will disembark and travel back to Omaha via luxury motor coach.
Friend Vern wanted more specific information so.....
The American Locomotive Company manufactured 25 Big Boys for the Union Pacific. Two groups of 10 were built in 1941 and a group of five in 1944. Weighing more than 604 ton, it was 132 feet in length overall (the locomotive 85 foot), 11 foot wide and 16 foot in height. With a power capacity of more than 6,000 horsepower, it could achieve a speed of 70 miles power. Longer than two city buses, it is powerful enough to pull 16 Statues of Liberty over a mountain range.
The wheel arrangement was designated 4-8-8-4 and it operated on 4 x 8 1/2 standard gauge.
     Eight Big Boys still survive.
It must be a "sight to see."
K-----K
     Alright, all you out-of-state non-believers..........
Here's another of numerous plaudits for your old stomping grounds.
Bankrate, in its 2019 rating of the best and worst states to retire in, ranks Iowa number two as the BEST state to retire in. Somehow, neighboring Nebraska got the top rating.
Interested in the bottom five? They are Washington, Illinois, Alaska, New York and poor Maryland.

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Lathen Ely, 48, Boone. BHS-88......Helen Gibbons Bergman, 74, Stratford, formerly of Boone. BHS-63. Married Jerry Bergman in 1964. She worked for Iowa Workplace Development for 26 years. Boone area survivors are her husband, Jerry, and a son, Jeffrey (Spank) Bergman of Stratford...............Carl Lee Crnkovich, 94, Granger. Born in Madrid. Marine vet. Married Doris Butenhoff in 1952. Worked at Firestone for 33 years prior to retirement in 1985. Survivors include his son, Brian Crnkovich of Woodward and grandsons, Brian Crnkovich and Taylor Brown, both of Madrid.

THE DIRTY THIRTY REMEMBERED

From Ron Hopkins, BSH-59 who wrote, "I read last week that ISU was the only university this year to have two football players drafted by the NFL AND two basketball players drafted by the NBA. Wow! When I was a freshman at ISU in 1959, there were only 30 members of the football team. The "Dirty Thirty" played at the old stadium at Hyland Avenue and Lincoln Way. I think they actually had a winning record, and tailback Tommy Watkins had a successful career, later, with the NFL Detroit Lions. The basketball team was led by Vinnie Brewer, one of only a handful of black students on campus. ISU sports news in those years mostly revolved around Harold Nichols wrestling team's national dominance. Go Cyclones. Thanks for keeping the Korner going."
EDITOR'S ADDENDUM: Here's some added info on that '59 team that may conjure up additional memories. Clay Stapleton was the coach and the team finished in a tie for third place in the Big Seven Conference. They weren't called the "Dirty Thirty" because they were dirty players. After a season opening win over Drake played in very soggy conditions, when the players arrived in the locker room after the game in muddied uniforms, the team trainer said, "well, here comes the dirty thirty."
Dwight Nichols, I believe a native of Knoxville, IA, was the star quarterback and was named an All American. Watkins and end Don Webb were the other top players.
The old Clyde Williams Field was named after a successful ISU football coach who was in charge from 1907-1912. Williams Field had a seating capacity of 20,000 but the Cyclone football crowds in the 50's and 60's averaged just 10,500.
Things have changed a bit in Cyclone land each fall recently.
K-----K
All info was from the west coast this week. Ron Hopkins from the state of Washington and some KWBG radio memories from the state of California.
Californian Max Moore, BHS-46, wrote, "brother Larry "lefty" Moore, BHS-52, informed me he worked with Don Reed, BHS-42, at KWBG radio announcing Toreador basketball and football games. He even went to Iowa City for state basketball tournament one time. Don was an outstanding football and basketball athlete and signed a baseball contract as a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals. Lefty was also a manager/coach of O'Briens softball team. I think I (Max) was in the service about then. Kenny Knowles, BHS-52, was a good friend of Lefty's. Thanks for many years of the Korner Mo."
MORE EDITOR'S TALK: When KWBG came on the air on March 2, 1950, Don Reed was the station's first Sports Director. He was followed by Bob Erickson and then, the Kornerman, was the station's third Sports Director.
Any hope Reed had of fulfilling his St. Louis Cardinal dream was killed during his military service when he suffered a very bad leg injury during combat. However, after the war, the injury didn't keep him from playing on the Boone Junior College basketball team with Max Moore and Stan Redeker, among others.
Max added, "we had a lot of fun at Hornbeck's on Saturday nights."
Hornbeck's was a well know restaurant in the Moingona area.

The Kornerman received a call from Ruth Shafer, BHS-50, this week. Ruth has two books, a 1950 Scroll and a book commemorating the class of 50's 50th reunion.

BUSY TIMES

COMING EVENTS: That old-fashioned steam engine ride from Omaha to Boone is coming soon, as part of Omaha's Railroad Days, July13-14.
The Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in 1941. It was retired in 1961 after traveling 1,031,205 miles while in service. The railroad reacquired the locomotive in 2013 and sent it to Cheyenne, WY for restoration.
The restored engine, the only operational Big Boy left, came out of the shop earlier in May. It is longer than two city buses and is powerful enough to pull 16 Statues of Liberty over a mountain range.
Omaha Railroad Days consists of a series of train-themed events at locations throughout the area. The Union Pacific Railroad Museum is offering rides on the train, pulled by a 1940's steam engine to cap off Omaha Railroad Days.
The newly restored Big Boy No. 4014 steam train will carry passengers from Omaha to Boone on July 15. Guests will disembark at Boone and travel via luxury motor coach back to Omaha. The reverse is probable if folks from this area can find their way to Omaha and "come back" to Boone.
Tickets were $400 to $700 and there was an advance sale. The proceeds benefit the museum.
K-----K
Then too, there's word of the 119th annual Iowa By the Sea Picnic in the Los Angeles, CA area, August 17th from 10 a.m. to  3 p.m.. The picnic will take place on the main deck of the battleship Iowa and will feature, among other things, a free self-guided tour of the ship (an $18 value) for Iowa's picnic guests.
There will also be entertainment provided by Blinded By the Blues playing West Coast and Chicago Blues with touches of rockabilly and Texas Shuffle.

HAVE A SAFE, JOYFUL FOURTH

Anybody out there have access to a picture of the old Jimmy Archer Field?
Janice Dutton Rardin, BHS-68, wrote, "my brothers are Bob Dutton, BHS-60; Marv (Tom) Dutton, BHS-62, and Jim Dutton, BHS-65. My cousins are Tom Peterson, BHS-67; Roger Dutton, BHS-63; and Don Dutton, BHS-60. They all played Babe Ruth baseball at Jimmy Archer Field. My uncle George Dutton, BHS-38, was an umpire there. I asked Tom Peterson if he has any pictures of Jimmy Archer Field and he said he didn't but to contact you to see if you did. I would appreciate it if you don't have any such picture, you could let me know who does."
The Kornerman says, "off hand, I have no answer. I have seen a Little League booklet all about the history of youth baseball in Boone and it, possibly, could contain such a picture."
ATTENTION: In the archives, just this very minute, 7/3/2019, 5:25 a.m., I, the Kornerman, found that booklet. It is the Boone National Little League Fact Book and Dedicatory Program from May 21, 1977. It appears that this was when a move was made from Jimmy Archer Field to the new Creasman complex. In the booklet is a picture of the old Jimmy Archer Field and a picture of the new Creasman area. However, I must say, that both pictures show nothing much more than the ground area. The older picture does show the banner that hung high at the entrance and read, "Jimmy Archer Field."
