MEMORY AFTER MEMORY

It began with, "you probably don't remember me but I certainly remember you and I'm quite aware of your blog."
Thus began a full, three-page, single spaced recital of numerous Boone memories. One show and tell won't cover enough so, in several coming Korner editions, we'll be "looking back" at some times and places, perhaps, forgotten but soon remembered.
The letter came from Fred Groat, BHS-62, who lives in Chicago.
Fred wrote, "I've lived in Chicago for many years but still have a great love for Boone, and very little for Chicago. My family moved to Boone in 1958 when my father, Fritz (F.E.) Groat, acquired the John Deere dealership. My mother was Jane Groat and my only sibling was my brother, Douglas, BHS-65, who is deceased. When moving to Boone, I enrolled in the eighth grade at the old junior/senior high at  Seventh and Crawford. Some of my teachers were Hal Lyness, Ray Lamb, Helen Henry and Vaughn Thornburg."
"I remember reading in your blog about the lot at the SE corner of Eighth and Tama and there was some confusion or a question about a John Deere store. That is where my father had his John Deere dealership and Russell Iron Works was on the west side of Tama."
"I enjoyed your recent story about the Westfall's, Nancy Gurrola, BHS-60, and her brother, Fritz, BHS-63, and their parents Dr. Bill and Jeanette. The mention of Chad Rinehart, BHS-2003, also caught my attention. His parents, of course, were Marty and Gayle and Chad, an All-American lineman, came by his football skills honestly cause his dad was a super star Toreador running back. Marty was a key player for the incredible three consecutive years, 1962-63-64, when Boone High beat Ames in football. Marty and my brother were close friends from their early days at Bryant through BHS graduation."
"Speaking of sports, Toreador-ettes, remember? FIVE syllables. How many other five-syllable mascot names have there been in Iowa high schools? That's a great Iowa sports trivia question. Most people would say, "who cares?" But of those who might be interested, most would probably guess none but I actually know of one other. Its something fun to talk about."
EDITOR'S NOTE: The previous "mentions" are a sample of numerous topics included in Fred's letter......all of which can be extended into various directions, individually, and containing much more detail. Even then, we haven't really hit on what he considered his number one topic. He wrote, "there is a specific topic that triggered me to write to you, the story you wrote about internationally famous journalist from Boone, Richard Longworth. I confess, it was over a year ago when I put that topic and this letter to you on my "To Do" list. Now, that I've finally started, though, many other topics have come to mind. I am an extremely nostalgic person who has wonderful and numerous memories of my days in Boone."
One mention of Longworth recalled that he actually had the "bug" for journalism when in grade school. Richard founded the "Sixth Grade Siren" school newspaper while attending Page school. That brought up another subject. Doug wrote, "I remember Page was the school that kids from the south side of town attended. When we moved to South Boone Street in 1960, Page was physically dilapidated and appeared to be in the worst condition of all the neighborhood grade schools. There was quite a controversy about renovating or replacing it."
   That's it for this edition.........to be continued......later.

LET'S CHECK THE MAIL

O.K., technically, simply saying mail doesn't "cut it" anymore. These days, there are dozens of other ways for written communication but there's only so much room for a banner line so........
K-----K
Let's begin with a note from Gary Knox, United-58, "I saw the history of Francis Mason and vaguely remember my dad rented a farm south of Boone on 22nd Street in the late 1930's that was owned by a lady named Fannie Mason. Would that be the same person?"
The Kornerman contacted Larry Adams, BHS-65, again and he said, "Francis was, sometimes, referred as Frannie."
K-----K
Martha Warrick Hilsabeck, BHS-62, said, "Enjoy your writings so much. I had wondered for years who Francis Mason was also. I was visiting with my sister the other day in the house you grew up in. Seeing your dad's old store always reminds me of all the old neighborhood grocery stores. Just driving around town and seeing how many of them are still standing makes for an interesting afternoon. I grew up a block south of Deeter's Grocery so I am amazed at how much the old neighborhood has changed. Love your columns. Keep typing."
EDITOR'S NOTE: Don't get me started. Good old 1710 Crawford and dad's grocery around the corner on 17th.......oh, what memories and, though that was many years ago, I still see folks who patronized that store and mention memories of it. I believe it was the late John Veale, BHS-46, who once made a study of old neighborhood stores and came up with 26 of them that had operated prior to the bigger stores expanding their hours, Sundays, 16, 18, 24 hours, thus, making it difficult for the smaller stores to compete. Eventually, the "big guys" won out.
K-----K
A CALENDAR NOTE OR TWO: On July 28th, Kris Blocker, Executive Director of Boone County Convention and Visitor's Bureau, and Mike Hammond, Executive Director Boone County Chamber of Commerce, will be joining Megan Reuther on the TV "Hello Iowa" show on WHO, channel 13, to discuss Boone County Tourism and Pufferbilly Days. In other promotional news, a new 30 second commercial touting Boone County is being aired, mid-May through August, on KCCI-TV, channel 8. Also in the works promoting Boone County is cooperation with Production Iowa on a new movie being filmed. The Boone area was chosen to be featured in the film.
P.S. Pufferbilly Days this year is scheduled for August 5-7.
K-----K
The older you get, it seems the more "out of the loop" you become. The Kornerman noted an event that was held last Saturday, the first annual Memorial Park Classic, sponsored by the Boone Baseball Club. Seems like it was an event for baseball players, 8th grade through 12th. Its the first time I've heard of the Boone Baseball Club so I can't really tell you its goals, who's involved or really anything about it. Am very, very happy to hear that youth baseball is not completely dead in a town that once was the Baseball Capital of Iowa, especially the 1965-67 era when two State High School Championships were earned in a three-year period.
One other sports note: Yearly changes of high school conference affiliations seem to continue. I noted that now the five public Des Moines Schools along with Ames, Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, Mason City, Ottumwa and Waterloo East have formed what they call, the Iowa Alliance.

Befriending and respecting members of the Cedar Rapids Police Department he, in turn, received respect from them and it allowed him a margin of responsibility as a volunteer crime-stopper, even approving of his purchase of a regulation police jacket. He entertained by imitating farm animals and musical instruments, performing at county fairs and community theatres. A brother-in-law, Roger Searls is a survivor. Services, including burial, in Boone.

FRANCES MASON, "Never too busy to help"

At a recent meeting of the Boone group that has an annual get-together at the Drake Relays, one of the members, Tim Croxen, BHS-59, made the comment that he had driven on Francis Mason Drive, which produced his question....."Who was Frances Mason?"
I, the Kornerman, had heard that name, on occasion, but could provide no definitive answer.
In such a circumstance, what do you do? It's obvious.....you contact Larry Adams, BHS-65, who reigns tall as Boone's number one historian.
Larry was contacted and within a few days, he had provided, as usual, a complete report on the life and times of Frances Mason. Thank you Larry.
After persuing the materials Larry sent, the Kornerman certainly understands why this community has honored her with this street name designation. Very much deserved.
In fact, her contributions are so vast, it seems the best strategy would be to list her most worthy achievements one-by-one. So here goes....
Born in Boone in 1877. Died in Boone in 1966 at age 89.
Attended Boone schools, including BHS for one year before going to Tilton Seminary to prepare for college.
Earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley in 1899.
Did some teaching out of state but was called back home to Boone to care for her mother.
Became the first lady to ever serve on the Boone School Board. Two terms, 1918-24.
Was a member of the Boone Park Board, serving as President for many years during the time that the single City Park near the high school was expanded into a system of four parcels, including about 250 acres. Also made the first contribution of $500 to Veterans Memorial Park on Boone's north side. Her mother also contributed $500.
Well known for her interest in  beautifying the city, she took charge of the buying and planting of thousands of trees and shrubs in the McHose  and Herman Parks. She was known to spend part of each day in the parks, with the workmen, supervising the landscaping.
She assisted in securing and locating the large Theodore Roosevelt statue in McHose Park.
Ms. Mason and Mrs. A.J. Barkley fought to preserve the Ledges State Park south of Boone.
While a member of the Boone Garden Club, she successfully engineered the club's participation in the state tree contest, which was an effort to locate the finest black walnut trees in Iowa.
Was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ericson Public Library for 18 years, 1936-54, with many years served as President. She worked constantly to improve the library facilities and planned a sunken garden, north of the library, with its pink flowering crab trees that attracted many visitors each spring.
For a time, served as a member of the local advisory committee of the National Youth Administration.
Organized the Boone Woman's Club in 1920 and served as its President from 1925-27.
Was instrumental in creating the position of Boone County Nurse.
Was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Lowell Study Club and an honorary member of Gamma Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
AND YOU SAY YOU HAD A BUSY DAY? Really, is just a street name enough?
P.S. I'm sure most viewers know where the so-called Green Space is located......northwest corner of Eighth and Story. That's where Meyer's Clothing was located for so many years prior to a destructive fire in February of 2009.
Actually, the original occupant of that area was the Mason Building. HOWEVER, that Mason had no connection, whatsoever, with Frances Mason.

SOME ADDITIONAL............

Information on the Boone junk yards moves forward. Loren Frazier, BHS-58, wrote, "Mr. Irvine is correct. The junk yard near Quinn's was Sundberg's and I do remember Lovejoy's on East Fourth Street." BHS-53 classmate John McPherson added, "I just received the April, 2022, issue of Trail Tales for the year 1942. It shows that Sundberg's was located at 1026 Eighth Street, phone number 340. Also, the so called "Box Factory" was actually Boone Forest Products and it was located on Factory Street, phone number 95." Further information shows that the business was organized and put into production early in 1941. Products manufactured by the company include both domestic and export boxes. Ponderosa Pine is used mainly in the manufacture of these boxes and dresser drawers.
P.S. The Kornerman feels a bit quilty, always referring to Quinn's. Actually, what was Quinn's, for what seemed like forever, is now Besser. Quinn's was there, on 12th street for so long, we oldtimer's have difficulty making that exchange.

I, the Kornerman, also received my copy of Trail Tales. What a wakeup call.....or should I say a wakening to Boone businesses in the early 40's, a majority of them now long gone. But, still providing lots of good memories.
Highlights of this edition include a 1942 map and guide of Boone and that day's retail trade area, important Boone business places in '42 and a listing of some businesses who still exist after 80 years.......Redekers, Boone State Bank, Fareway, etc..Sorry if I missed some. There's a long list of '42 businesses that will certainly trigger some Korner viewers memories.

Tony Crandell, BHS-59, and I crossed work paths at KWBG for a period of time in the 50's/60's and this week, all at once, I received a big box containing three great books from Tony. Two of them pertained, mainly, to Chicago radio history and the third was all about the Rock and Roll period from 1955-75. Tony indicated they were books that provided him with lots of enjoyable reading, starting when he was in  the service. I'm sure I'll enjoy perusing them as time passes.
Also included were some K-Dub memories that provided some chuckles. He described how he fell through the roof of the Ledges Road studio in the middle of the popular "Dial Your Neighbor' show. Show co-host Roger Weber immediately commented, "well, look who just dropped in." Tony was "up there" working on a transmitter fan.
When former employees talk radio, remembered "flubs" are always mentioned and he recalled a couple that I won't mention. However, he did remind of some real tongue twisters that were required, "See the new Frigidaire Freezer with the Frost Forbidder" and "There is a sale on the shoes that are on Schiff's shelves." Those are actually pretty mild compared to some others I remember.

The following aren't really tongue twisters but they are comments that draw a laugh or, perhaps, a tear.
I'm at an age where my back goes out more than I do.
The older I get, the better I used to be.
I don't do alcohol anymore. I get the same effect just standing up fast.
As I watch this new generation try to rewrite our history, one thing I'm sure of.....it will be misspelled and have no punctuation.
