SIMILAR GOALS THOUGH WORLDS APART

Its safe to say, that, for a good portion of our working lives, Boone High School 1953 classmates, Richard Longworth and I, the Kornerman, have dedicated our heart and soul to the newspaper industry.
I'm giggling to myself as I add, "but certainly at very different levels."
In a little old town in central Iowa, I've tried to make a positive difference reporting local sports results, adding an occasional feature story on a Boone area resident and chasing down police and fire calls. So, what has my friend Richard done? Nothing, OTHER THAN 20 years of foreign reporting service for the Chicago Tribune and United Press International, which included travel to 80 countries over five continents. THAT'S ALL.
Not forgotten are numerous honors for his excellent work AND, IN FACT, being a Pultizer Prize finalist on two different occasions.
Quite a contrast in experiences there, Richard and I.
Yet.....when I think of Richard way back, I can't help but think of him excitedly running across the floor after a winning Toreador basketball game and then......probably........running down to the Boone News Republican office to quickly record his thoughts on the big victory. Yup! He had the "bug" early and even as a high schooler, the BNR was happy to accept his reporting acumen.
But you know something? I've never asked him but I will assume that those days, those early days when we first connected with what became a lifelong love, were among the happiest of our lives.
As you viewers know, the last couple editions I've been expressing my disappointment in our current local written news coverage or lack thereof. And we know, Richard and I, that its not a lone problem. Most newspapers all over the country, big and small, are suffering and no solid solutions seem in sight.
Richard has replied to our recent editions with some interesting observations about the current state of that lifelong love.
I have complained about what I have felt was a lack of coverage for a BHS girls swim team that has completed one of the best seasons in that events history.
Richard analyzed, "a town can't be proud of something its kids do, if it doesn't know they're doing it. This is the way a good newspaper ties a town together, gives it community spirit. But, apart from nobody reporting on the BHS teams, nobody's thoroughly reporting on the other parts of local life.....city council, police, school board......that Boone residents pay for. They have a right, a need to know, how their money is being spent but, if the newspaper doesn't report on it, nobody does. Maybe these local worthies are doing a good job or maybe they aren't, but who knows if no nosy reporter keeps an eye on them."
He added, "all across the country good people are trying to come up with a solution. In some places, local citizens are starting on-line newspapers focusing on events and other information that knits a community together. In some places, this is being done through libraries which, after all, are also a source of knowledge. Some philanthropies, recognizing the vital role that newspapers play in a democracy, are funding local efforts. I'm sure the journalism schools at Iowa State and SUI are concerned about this: after all, it's what their grads will do, if they're lucky. I wonder if the journalism students at ISU might take on Boone's situation as a project. Any solution takes money, of course, but not as much as it used to; digital is a whole lot cheaper than the linotypes, printing presses and delivery costs of the News Republican of our youth. I wonder if there are some philanthropic dollars around Boone, controlled by people who make their money in the town. If they care about Boone and its future, they must know that, without the spark and glue provided by a good newspaper, the future could be grim."

STILL, NO RESPECT

You'll recall that in the last edition, Wednesday, the Kornerman had lamented the lack of positive publicity for, perhaps, the best girl's swimming team in Boone High School history. During the just completed season, members of that team have broken numerous school, pool and event records, had won or placed very high in all of the multi-meets they competed in and definitely completed the best state meet showing ever by a BHS girls swim team.
That Wednesday edition was a day before release of the next edition of the local newspaper and we expressed a hope that, perhaps, a Thursday front page banner and story or, at least, a tribute on the sports front page would honor this team.
Alas! What actually appeared was a sports section front page story and picture honoring the Ames girls swim team who captured the state team championship. The story included no word of the Toreadors accomplishments during the season or even in the state meet. In my opinion, this completed   a season-long dismissal of this outstanding team in our local? Ames News Republican.
Actually, except for a nice, lengthy front page story on the Freedom Rock dedication, there was hardly any Boone news mention in that entire edition. I guess its what we've come to expect, like it or not.
P.S. Its noted that they call it the Boone News; its no longer the Boone News Republican like it had been since the early 1900's. Republican has been erased. Just another small but steady move toward what will probably result in the Ames Tribune, banner and all, becoming our local? newspaper, with limited if any real Boone news.
Sad. Very sad for our community.

Here's the latest concerning the proposed elementary school project.
If you don't succeed, try, try again.
A committee of Boone school patrons had hoped to have a bond vote last September but the pandemic interfered. Now, the same group is hoping for such a vote this coming March.
Their plan, supported in kind by the Boone Community School District Board, calls for building a new elementary building in a northeast area of town roughly bounded on the south by Hancock Drive, west by South Jackson, north by Southeast Linn and east by Airport Road. The new school would replace the current Page and Lincoln buildings.
Although the school district  has not officially purchased the proposed site, most of the school's plans seem ready. However, the city isn't quite as receptive.....yet. Its not that they necessarily oppose the plan, they just feel a little "rushed" by it.
After all, new roads, water and sewer lines etc. would all be required in this new undeveloped area, as well as costs involved. Plans for such major projects don't happen overnight.

SEEKING JUSTICE

Alright.....its a cold, windy but beautiful day......and the Kornerman isn't completely happy......and I feel compelled to tell you why.
Our Toreador girls swimming team has been badly short-changed all season and it breaks this old BHS'ers heart. That's why!
Full disclosure: Perhaps there will be a glowing tribute to this team in tommorrow's (Thursday) Ames News Republican. Front page coverage? It should be or, at least, front page of the sports section. But then (?) a survey of the ANR's all-season coverage could best be described as "spotty." Admittedly, because of my long connection with BHS, I do take this slight of any of our student athletes high achievements personally.
Let me explain this adulation with a bit of boredom. Once a Toreador, always a Toreador and this author has been privileged to be a program "insider" for a huge portion of my life. A 1953 BHS grad, I participated in almost every sport offered, from seventh grade on up. Then, as a local radio sports reporter (KWBG) and newspaper sports editor (Boone News Republican) I, simultaneously, covered all Toreador sports from the late 50's into the 2000's. Lots of Boone high athletes from that period, particularly the earlier years, still boast and appreciate having newspaper clippings of sporting events I had written about that they were involved in. Since I attended all the games, home and even away, the school hired me, on occasion, to transport athletes and even cheerleaders to the away contests. They were certain I'd be going. Speaking of swimming alone, all the away meets, as well as the home meets, were personally covered and many of the swimmers may remember riding in my vehicle to those contests. Oh, did I mention over 40 years of public address announcing at BHS football games?
My heavy involvement with BHS activities was true and lengthy.
The community was blessed this season with one of the best, if not THE best, BHS girls swimming teams ever, in a school sport that began in the 1930's. They broke school, pool and meet records, won or finished high in regular season events and represented us well in the just completed state competition, However, I'm sadly aware that, so far, their yeoman efforts have been badly understated, through no fault of their own.
Yes, today our world is different, if that can be a satisfactory excuse. Newspapers are in a steep decline. Our once daily Boone News Republican succumbed to a once weekly paper and when new ownership left Boone County, the current once-weekly publication began leaning more and more away from Boone, favoring Ames and even copy regurgitated from a sister publication, the Des Moines Register.
So, what can we do about it? Nothing I guess.
But that isn't going to stop this old guy from providing state meet written newspaper material that, locally, I haven't seen yet.
In final events, here were the Boone results.
Diving: Jacie Flockhart, sophomore, 25th place, 180.10 diving points.
200 medley relay: Liz Purtle, senior; Regan Peter, senior; Anna Gute, sophomore: Emily Wingert, senior, 7th place,1:50.53, 24 team points.
     50 freestyle: Purtle, 15th place, 24.89, 2 team points.
200 free relay: Gute; Wingert; Marin Powell, senior; Purtle, ninth place, 1:40.27, 18 team points.
400 free relay: Lexi Gradoville, sophomore; Wingert; Powell and Sierra Sherry, sophomore, finished 23rd in 3:47.51.
There were no relay preliminaries. They were all final events.
The Boone team finished with 44 points and a 17th place finish.
In the diving prelims, Flockhart had a score of 399.80.
In the swimming prelims, Gute just missed qualifying in the 100 free. She swam 17th in 56.64 but only 16 swimmers advanced. Purtle swam 25th in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.79 and did not qualify for the final and Peter finished 29th in 1:11.01 in the 100 breaststroke and did not qualify for the final in that event. Purtle was 13th in the 50 freestyle prelims in 24.41 prior to her 15th place performance in 24.89 in the final.
CONGRATULATIONS LADIES......your year long dedication has paid off and those who truly know, have great admiration for what you've accomplished as individuals and as a great team.

AFTER 40 YEARS, A CHANGE OF PLANS

The Kornerman has always had the feeling that more out-of-towners visit our site than those who live in Boone County. If so, we have some important news that may have an impact on your 2021 calendar.
After more than 40 years of having the Pufferbilly event the September weekend after Labor Day, a schedule change has been announced by the Boone County Chamber of Commerce and Pufferbilly Day's Steering Committee.
The 2021 event will be held August 6-8.
Times change and, apparently, the committee felt there's been enough of a change that this move was needed.
They hope the new dates will improve attendance, allow for greater volunteer participation and lessen the burden on local law enforcement among other reasons.
The committee felt that a number of "new" factors through the years have been impacting the festival, apparently in a negative way. Mentioned were competition with such large-scale local events such as the Farm Progress Show, the Super National races, the Iowa/Iowa State football game and the start of the school year, which all seemed to crowd those early September days. That had an effect on hotel space availability, forced decisions to be made on which events to attend and "lessened the overall financial impact of each event on the local economy."
The typical Pufferbilly scheduled events, highlighted by the Saturday parade, will not change much and, in fact, could be enhanced.
So, there you have it. Come........enjoy..........but a month earlier than anticipated.
K-----K
That old philosopher, Vern Modeland, BHS-50, is just like many of us. We can't get those good old days out of our tired minds.
But here, I'll let him tell you his musings. "our kids and their kids and their kids likely wouldn't slow down to hear or read of how it used to be when downtown Boone was bustling on Saturdays with shoppers walking the sidewalks and shopping the countless things that could be found in those stores that are now empty or bulldozed. What would they think of sitting on the front fenders of cars that had fenders and visiting with most everybody who walked by, 'cause they knew most everybody that walked by? I remember my uncle having to drive downtown Saturday morning and park his bright green Chevy in a key spot so it could be ready for occupation for the evening of commerce and communication that was small town Iowa in the 30's and 40's. No TV, other than the soon-to-arrive small one in the window of the hardware store that had a tall tower on its roof to bring in Omaha, our closest "first" TV station in the region. Today, young people wouldn't be seen "scooping the loop" or gathering to decide on whether or not to drive over to the Story County line and our first area Drive-in Theater."
The Kornerman says, "Oh boy, haven't we "oldtimers" relived those memories time and time again. And, most importantly, they were happy memories."
Vern has a unique way with words. Here's an example: "As I sit here in my cocoon where old people are told to be, or are sent to be, warehoused until they are nothing more than an obituary....which is treated as a final act of advertising income these days, I learn. At one time, they were the first part of the paper read."
Finally, he signed off with......"what will next week bring? Kinder? Gentler? They seem like almost obsolete words today, don't they?"

IT, the election, WILL BE OVER WHEN ITS OVER

Ron Carlson lives right here in good old Boone Iowa after growing up in Ogden.
Some time ago, he had organized a listing of bands who performed out of Boone County from 1962-78 and we had made a note of that in the Korner. He remembered.
These days he's attempting to update that information. He contacted the Kornerman seeking information on a former band member, Fred "Fritz" Westfall. With the help of Fritz longtime friend, Jim Grabau, I was able to pass on information regarding his (Fritz) current location.
Ron emailed that he moved to Boone in 1975, got married in 1978 and settled in. But then, he ping-ponged to Ogden in '86, back to Boone in '93 and he's been settled on Tama Street ever since.
He lost his 33-year job in 2009 but started volunteer work at 99.3 FM/1260 AM when the station was located in the Citizens/U.S. Bank building. That station moved to Des Moines in 2015 and Ron is now employed there. From 2010-16 he also did some work at Walmart in Boone.
Ron says he hasn't played in a band since 1992, mainly due to growing family responsibilities and the lack of time to do so. He has helped a friend out with some recording of music and he likes to do a bit of writing. "I do miss getting together with other musicians. There is something quite pleasing about working together to make music," he explained.
On a sad note, he indicated he had noticed in the Korner the listing of Brian Cottrell's passing. "He was an old friend and I really appreciate the Korner making note of this sort of thing."
Boone's current lack of complete media coverage of area deaths results in this type of situation quite often, which is a sad state of affairs. It only enhances the Korner's attempt to at least, somewhat, rectify that negative.

The Kornerman received some interesting information from Don Nystrom, BHS-56, of Ames this week.
Some good historical info regarding the Masons impact in Boone and their initial home at 602 Story Street, which currently houses the Boone County Historical Society.
It all began locally when a group of Boonesboro residents, who were Masons from various states, banded together and petitioned the Grand Lodge of Iowa to form a Masonic Lodge. That was on June 8, 1855.
That October, the request was granted and Boonesboro Lodge No. 79 was organized.
In 1858, the Boonesboro Lodge name was changed to Mount Olive Lodge No. 79
At that time, the lodge shared a room with the Odd Fellows in the upper floor of the old wooden Boone County Courthouse, which was located at Third and Fremont streets.
In 1865, the city of Boone was established east of Boonesboro, in 1866 it was incorporated as Montana but by 1871, the name had changed back to Boone. The end result was that by 1892, Boonesboro had become the city of Boone's fifth ward.
Movement of the lodge followed. Located on the north side of the public square, the lodge was destroyed by fire which resulted in a move to the second floor of a building that housed Mallory's Drug Store on the north corner of the block.
In December of 1888, Mount Olive consolidated with another Boone lodge, St. Paul Lodge No. 361, and Mount Olive moved to the south side of Eighth Street where the Elks Club has located.
Brother Frank Champlin passed away in 1905 and left sufficient bank stock to erect a new Temple. The Champlin Memorial Masonic Temple was dedicated on December 27,1907 at 602 Story and the Governor of Iowa, Brother Albert B. Cummins was the dedicatory speaker.
That temple served as Mount Olive's home for 83 years, 1907-1990. In '90, Mount Olive moved to their present building, a block east of the old temple.
