SPECIAL MENTION

For the old Kornerman, this is hard to write, very hard, gut wrenching. I really don't even know how or where to start.
Look? People, many fine people, die every single day and I know that.  Most have been hard-working, family-oriented folks who spend extra time contributing, in various ways, to their community. Others, for some particular fashion, have just not been treated well by society or have not treated themselves in a positive way.  AND, I certainly don't want to disrespect or disparage any of these people in any way. Their stories, good or bad, are all worthy of publication.
However, today, I feel compelled to note, specificially, the recent deaths of just two of our citizens. I knew them both, one particularly well. I was well aware of their talents and their contributions to our community and both were members of Augustana Lutheran Church, the church we proudly attend. So, I simply could not pass the news of the deaths of  Bill Martin and Everett Johnson without special, personal mention.
Dr. William "Bill" Martin Jr.. You learn a lot about his wonderful work as a clinical psychologist at the Boone County Hospital by perusing the numerous tributes to him on the Schroeder Memorial web site. My heavens, the many lives he positively touched and even saved. Then, many would remember even more his musical talent......whether it be keyboard work or that fabulous trumpet playing. He offered those talents in many ways, at church, as a popular area "small group" music member and as a featured soloist for the Boone Municipal Band. His, was certainly a life well-lived and "given" to so many in both his work and play.
Everett Johnson. Again, we, perhaps, first think of his music. Music. It was a major part of his life......as an outstanding vocalist at church, funerals and numerous other occasions. But even his regular work days were devoted to this passion. Successfully pointing high school students to an appreciation of music during his days at Sheldon High School and then, during a long and successful career as the Executive Director of the Iowa High School Music Association. When you're asked to lead ALL the high school music students in the state of Iowa toward a better appreciation of music, you know you're held in the highest esteem by Iowa's school administrators. But, there was even more to Everett Johnson than just music and I may even miss some of his numerous offerings. Off-hand, I think of his dedication to our own high school as a fan, volunteer worker and member of the school board. He was still serving the community, at the time of his passing, as a member of the Boone Park Board. A big Atlanta Braves baseball fan, Ev coached that sport for several years while at Sheldon High School. The Kornerman worked many years in the same building with Everett and witnessed on a daily basis, his boundless energy and relentless work ethic.
In closing, I can only say that our community has taken an extra big hit with the loss of two extraordinarily talented men who will be mighty tough to replace.
K-----K
    ONWARD!
If you "outsiders" have visited "home" lately, you have certainly noticed a trend southward, toward Highway 30. In that direction, new businesses have been built, others have relocated and there are indications, new housing is considering more movement in that direction.
Now, the same trend is developing in an eastern direction, fueled by the possibility of construction of a new elementary school to replace the current and very old Page and Lincoln facilities.
Earlier this month, the Boone Community School Board voted to approve a contract to purchase property in the eastern part of the city, west, just beyond Airport Road. For just under 2-million dollars, 66.5 acres of land, owned by Goeppinger Enterprises, was agreed to.
Before going much further, let's make this abundantly clear. Board President Dr. Brian Mehlhaus said the board already has the funds available for the land purchase AND under the district's time frame for paying the current debt, there would be NO increase in tax asking for the new building.
The Board has received a petition with more than 700 signatures, asking for a bond referendum to cover the cost of the new facility itself.
The Board's resolution calls for a $23-million dollar Bond Referendum to be voted on by patrons on March 2, 2021.
Groundbreaking could potentially take place in the late fall of 2021. Steel and concrete would go up in early 2022, with the school being occupied with its first class of students in April of 2023.
Keep in mind that this proposal has a big effect on city operations as well. New roads, utilities etc. will be required, which means financing for those projects will also be required.
Its not beyond belief that this proposed new school in southeast Boone will also draw additional housing projects in that area of town.

A SIGN ON THE HOUSE

In the most recent edition, there had been talk of vaccines and to add to those comments, Tom Canfield, BHS-53, remembered, "the signs that were hung close to the front door of our house were of a different color, depending on the ailment. I don't remember the color code for sure, but I think mumps had a green sign hung, chicken pox a yellow sign and measles a red sign."
K-----K
Back to Larry Lindmark's memories, some, of which, we featured in the last edition.
Larry, BHS-63, wrote about the fantastic service the late Mike Riker, BHS-63, gave to the Boone High School football program serving 50, that's fifty, years on the chain gang at all Toreador home games.
Larry wrote, "Mike was a fixture at Boone athletic events. Doing anything for 50 years is dedication. I would see Mike every once in awhile when I would stop to see a game in Boone. I was talking to Steve Duffy, BSH-62, last October and he was sharing some stories of Mike and his work along the sidelines. Steve has also spent many years on the football chain gang. That's an up and close and personal way to watch a game. You get to know the personalities of the players and coaches of the visiting team. I did the same job for 40 years at Augustana College in Rock Island, some years driving three hours or more from Chicago or Wisconsin. During that time, both of my sons played for Coach Bob Reade, and then my oldest son, Jeff, went on to serve as an assistant coach for Coach Reade for 16 years. It was a family get together every Saturday. I even served on the chain gang when Augustana was the visiting team at Wheaton College in Illinois one year. There had been a 30 minute time change for the start of the game. I saw that the chain gang was short a person so I volunteered. I helped out in the first quarter until the absentee showed up. I don't think that would have happened at a Big 10 or Big 12 game but it did happen in a Division III contest. Keep up the good work. I always appreciate your blog and the sharing of Boone stories."

I know many of you are very busy in this pre-Christmas time. I, the Kornerman, had a quiet Friday and turned to music in the evening. Scanning YouTube, I found a very interesting Sixty Minutes Classic, which featured Billy Joel. It was an older piece and spiced with several of his best songs. He was 48 years old at the time. An interesting guy with some interesting thoughts on life. Very enjoyable.
Then, I listened to a little of Merle Haggard, Glen Campbell, Chicago AND THEN the Four Lads (No, Not Much/Standing on the Corner) and the McGuire (Sincerely/Sugartime) sisters. Really enjoyed it all and felt a bit of sadness too. To think that so many of our young people will never have the opportunity or take an opportunity to hear such good music. Sad. Very sad.

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Dr. William Martin Jr., 72, Boone. BHS-66. Earned a degree from ISU and then a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Wyoming. A talented musician, he and groups he had or played with were well known throughout the area. He was also a featured member of the Boone Municipal Band. Survivors include his wife, Sarah, of Boone, a daughter and four sisters.........Carol Ann Carlsen, 77, Madrid........
Marie "Beth" Housken Hay, 93, Dayton. Stratford HS-47. Married Earl Hay in 1948. Was a housewife, worked at Franklin Manufacturing in Webster City and was a cook at the Dayton Care Center. Survivors include four sons, three daughters and three sisters-in-law.

REMEMBERING WEST BOONE, HOUSE CALLS AND VACCINES

In a recent edition, Carolyn Ades Durham, BHS-58, reviewed some of the businesses she remembered from her West Boone days. One that she mentioned was Mac's Drug Store.
Tom Canfield of Ames, one of the Kornerman's classmates, BHS-53, has responded. He wrote, "my grandfather, Carl Canfield, operated a general store in the same block as the drug store that, I believe, Carolyn referred to. If that is a fact, then the store, which I may not be spelling correctly, was called, Maggie Macoulla's Drug Store."
Tom said he spent most of his childhood, through fourth grade, in West Boone and was a kindergarten student at Lincoln elementary the first year of its existence in the current building. He indicated he could probably write several pages about West Boone stores from that time and his families time in that area, the old coal mines, the Boone Biblical College with radio station KFGQ and the general way of life during the last of the depression years and the beginning of World War II.
K-----K
The Kornerman has a special feeling for those young guys who were members of the first Boone Babe Ruth team I coached. I think that was about 1958, just after I returned from two years of military service.
One of  those 14-15 year olds was Larry Lindmark, BHS-63. He came down from his home in Redwing, MN for "Mo Kelley Day" a couple years ago and we've enjoyed a continuing contact ever since those Ruth days.
I received a note from Larry this week and he provided a couple things that may inspire some memories from Korner viewers.
We're in the middle of this current vaccine project so this memory is very apropos at this time.
Larry wrote, "I remember when my sisters, Beth and Chris or I, would come down  with measles, mumps or chicken pox, a yellow sign would be posted by our front door at 1212 Third Street announcing a quarantine for our house. The county health department was probably responsible for such signs. Dr. Robert Mandersheid, who was in practice with Dr. Gerald Sutton, would come to our house with his little black bag and check up on us. My dad, Bob, had mumps as an adult, which, evidently, was worse than a child having the same ailment. I wonder when the practice of doctors making "house calls" came to an end?"
Larry continued, "when the breakthrough occurred for a polio vaccine, I remember going over to Boone High School and standing in line to receive an oral vaccine in a white paper pill cup. I believe our family went there after church on at least two Sundays. I'm curious what other people may remember about that event and the year it took place."
The Kornerman says, "here was my personal experience. I was heading into seventh grade at BHS in 1947-48, became ill and was diagnosed with polio/spinal meningitis and actually missed most of my initial seventh grade. Enough so, that I repeated that grade. I remember the "iron lung," which I was able to avoid but I also remember the spinal tap and lots of various drugs/vaccines administered every three hours for what seemed like "forever." I have always felt extremely lucky. One leg is a bit smaller than the other and I've had, even to this day, some symptoms that remain or have returned 60 years later via what is called, "Post Polio Syndrome." Hey, I was able to play high school and college athletics and I'm still alive so......."
Finally, Larry added an interesting side note. "When I was sick, my dad would call KWBG and make a special request for a song about bears. I don't remember the title. So, I would sit in anticipation for the song to come on the radio. Mo, do you remember playing special requests for sick children?"
The Kornerman says, "Perhaps there were some times when we would answer such requests but I don't remember that we made that a consistent part of our broadcast day."

Holiday time must be here. Appreciate the Korner holiday greetings already received from John and Linda Hinz, Tom Peterson, Mike Loehrer and John and Susan Kueck.

CLEARING THE DESK

     Lets do some ketchup!

     (1)  Carolyn Ades Durham, BHS-58, called with some thoughts about those good old West Boone days. Our conversation covered many of the business names always discussed when there's West Boone talk. But there was at least one business I was completely unaware of......Mac's Drug Store. I've known all about Forest Thompson's drug store, Nancy's Cafe, Munson's grocery, Lamb's furniture, Miller Oil and Verne Whitmer's grocery and, of course, Bob Culver's famous Cookie Jar tenderloins. Maybe it was turkey day that prompted Carolyn's memories or, of course, the long COVID shutdown might have played a part.
     (2) The recent death of Marv Nicholson, BHS-64, resulted in a call from Vern Schmickley, BHS-64, who was seeking additional information. Vern lives in Raleigh, NC. In a similar situation, Dick Musser, BHS-64, sent me a California newspaper clipping of Don "Red" Houser's, BHS-49, obituary. A California friend had sent it to Dick. We had already noted that passing in the Korner but the obit provided a few more details. I've previously mentioned in the Korner that both of those guys, Marv and "Red," provided the Kornerman with some memories. Marv was on one of my first Babe Ruth baseball teams and later, was a good basketball baseball player at BHS, an important member of the State Basketball tournament team of 1963. And, I clearly remember feeling great pride as I watched "Red," a former Toreador, catch an opening kickoff and run it back for a touchdown for the Cyclones in an Iowa State University football game at old Clyde Williams field. As a younger person, the Kornerman was  thrilled that a former Toreador performed so well for ISU.
     (3) The last couple editions we've mentioned Richard Longworth, BHS-53, a lot as we visited the subject of journalism.....past and present. Many of Richard's accomplishments in that field were mentioned but Sara Jane Shaler Harwood, BHS-55, has added to the list. Sally emailed, "Richard had an even earlier start on his career path than those things mentioned in your column. He was editor of the acclaimed "Sixth Grade Siren" at Page School. I, a lowly fourth grader at the time, was much impressed by his journalistic abilities even then."
     (4) Richard also replied to the recent columns. He wrote, "many thanks for reprinting my thoughts on our business path. You're right, those BNR days were wonderful times. I never did get over my amazement that we got paid for having so much fun. And now we seem to be living together through the end of an era. But, oh my, it was great while it lasted."
     (5) Vern Modeland, BHS-50, of course added his two cents worth. He emailed, "sad that journalism has gone the way of dinosaurs and other things that don't fit the scheme of this "modern world" of divisiveness, anger and revisionism. Welcome to the New World Order."
     (6) The passing of Mrs B, Lorraine Belluci, brought some memories. She and her husband, Jim, started Belluci's Pizza House in 1965 and yours truly was there on that opening day/night. As a matter of fact, I was working radio at that time and we did a live broadcast from their opening. Seems to me there was some type of pizza eating contest involved as well as all the other traditional opening things.....the cake and flowers and good wishes etc. Whatever, I'm sure the Kornerman had his share of offerings on that opening day.

SIMILAR GOALS THOUGH WORLDS APART

Its safe to say, that, for a good portion of our working lives, Boone High School 1953 classmates, Richard Longworth and I, the Kornerman, have dedicated our heart and soul to the newspaper industry.
I'm giggling to myself as I add, "but certainly at very different levels."
In a little old town in central Iowa, I've tried to make a positive difference reporting local sports results, adding an occasional feature story on a Boone area resident and chasing down police and fire calls. So, what has my friend Richard done? Nothing, OTHER THAN 20 years of foreign reporting service for the Chicago Tribune and United Press International, which included travel to 80 countries over five continents. THAT'S ALL.
Not forgotten are numerous honors for his excellent work AND, IN FACT, being a Pultizer Prize finalist on two different occasions.
Quite a contrast in experiences there, Richard and I.
Yet.....when I think of Richard way back, I can't help but think of him excitedly running across the floor after a winning Toreador basketball game and then......probably........running down to the Boone News Republican office to quickly record his thoughts on the big victory. Yup! He had the "bug" early and even as a high schooler, the BNR was happy to accept his reporting acumen.
But you know something? I've never asked him but I will assume that those days, those early days when we first connected with what became a lifelong love, were among the happiest of our lives.
As you viewers know, the last couple editions I've been expressing my disappointment in our current local written news coverage or lack thereof. And we know, Richard and I, that its not a lone problem. Most newspapers all over the country, big and small, are suffering and no solid solutions seem in sight.
Richard has replied to our recent editions with some interesting observations about the current state of that lifelong love.
I have complained about what I have felt was a lack of coverage for a BHS girls swim team that has completed one of the best seasons in that events history.
Richard analyzed, "a town can't be proud of something its kids do, if it doesn't know they're doing it. This is the way a good newspaper ties a town together, gives it community spirit. But, apart from nobody reporting on the BHS teams, nobody's thoroughly reporting on the other parts of local life.....city council, police, school board......that Boone residents pay for. They have a right, a need to know, how their money is being spent but, if the newspaper doesn't report on it, nobody does. Maybe these local worthies are doing a good job or maybe they aren't, but who knows if no nosy reporter keeps an eye on them."
He added, "all across the country good people are trying to come up with a solution. In some places, local citizens are starting on-line newspapers focusing on events and other information that knits a community together. In some places, this is being done through libraries which, after all, are also a source of knowledge. Some philanthropies, recognizing the vital role that newspapers play in a democracy, are funding local efforts. I'm sure the journalism schools at Iowa State and SUI are concerned about this: after all, it's what their grads will do, if they're lucky. I wonder if the journalism students at ISU might take on Boone's situation as a project. Any solution takes money, of course, but not as much as it used to; digital is a whole lot cheaper than the linotypes, printing presses and delivery costs of the News Republican of our youth. I wonder if there are some philanthropic dollars around Boone, controlled by people who make their money in the town. If they care about Boone and its future, they must know that, without the spark and glue provided by a good newspaper, the future could be grim."

STILL, NO RESPECT

You'll recall that in the last edition, Wednesday, the Kornerman had lamented the lack of positive publicity for, perhaps, the best girl's swimming team in Boone High School history. During the just completed season, members of that team have broken numerous school, pool and event records, had won or placed very high in all of the multi-meets they competed in and definitely completed the best state meet showing ever by a BHS girls swim team.
That Wednesday edition was a day before release of the next edition of the local newspaper and we expressed a hope that, perhaps, a Thursday front page banner and story or, at least, a tribute on the sports front page would honor this team.
Alas! What actually appeared was a sports section front page story and picture honoring the Ames girls swim team who captured the state team championship. The story included no word of the Toreadors accomplishments during the season or even in the state meet. In my opinion, this completed   a season-long dismissal of this outstanding team in our local? Ames News Republican.
Actually, except for a nice, lengthy front page story on the Freedom Rock dedication, there was hardly any Boone news mention in that entire edition. I guess its what we've come to expect, like it or not.
P.S. Its noted that they call it the Boone News; its no longer the Boone News Republican like it had been since the early 1900's. Republican has been erased. Just another small but steady move toward what will probably result in the Ames Tribune, banner and all, becoming our local? newspaper, with limited if any real Boone news.
Sad. Very sad for our community.

Here's the latest concerning the proposed elementary school project.
If you don't succeed, try, try again.
A committee of Boone school patrons had hoped to have a bond vote last September but the pandemic interfered. Now, the same group is hoping for such a vote this coming March.
Their plan, supported in kind by the Boone Community School District Board, calls for building a new elementary building in a northeast area of town roughly bounded on the south by Hancock Drive, west by South Jackson, north by Southeast Linn and east by Airport Road. The new school would replace the current Page and Lincoln buildings.
Although the school district  has not officially purchased the proposed site, most of the school's plans seem ready. However, the city isn't quite as receptive.....yet. Its not that they necessarily oppose the plan, they just feel a little "rushed" by it.
After all, new roads, water and sewer lines etc. would all be required in this new undeveloped area, as well as costs involved. Plans for such major projects don't happen overnight.

SEEKING JUSTICE

Alright.....its a cold, windy but beautiful day......and the Kornerman isn't completely happy......and I feel compelled to tell you why.
Our Toreador girls swimming team has been badly short-changed all season and it breaks this old BHS'ers heart. That's why!
Full disclosure: Perhaps there will be a glowing tribute to this team in tommorrow's (Thursday) Ames News Republican. Front page coverage? It should be or, at least, front page of the sports section. But then (?) a survey of the ANR's all-season coverage could best be described as "spotty." Admittedly, because of my long connection with BHS, I do take this slight of any of our student athletes high achievements personally.
Let me explain this adulation with a bit of boredom. Once a Toreador, always a Toreador and this author has been privileged to be a program "insider" for a huge portion of my life. A 1953 BHS grad, I participated in almost every sport offered, from seventh grade on up. Then, as a local radio sports reporter (KWBG) and newspaper sports editor (Boone News Republican) I, simultaneously, covered all Toreador sports from the late 50's into the 2000's. Lots of Boone high athletes from that period, particularly the earlier years, still boast and appreciate having newspaper clippings of sporting events I had written about that they were involved in. Since I attended all the games, home and even away, the school hired me, on occasion, to transport athletes and even cheerleaders to the away contests. They were certain I'd be going. Speaking of swimming alone, all the away meets, as well as the home meets, were personally covered and many of the swimmers may remember riding in my vehicle to those contests. Oh, did I mention over 40 years of public address announcing at BHS football games?
My heavy involvement with BHS activities was true and lengthy.
The community was blessed this season with one of the best, if not THE best, BHS girls swimming teams ever, in a school sport that began in the 1930's. They broke school, pool and meet records, won or finished high in regular season events and represented us well in the just completed state competition, However, I'm sadly aware that, so far, their yeoman efforts have been badly understated, through no fault of their own.
Yes, today our world is different, if that can be a satisfactory excuse. Newspapers are in a steep decline. Our once daily Boone News Republican succumbed to a once weekly paper and when new ownership left Boone County, the current once-weekly publication began leaning more and more away from Boone, favoring Ames and even copy regurgitated from a sister publication, the Des Moines Register.
So, what can we do about it? Nothing I guess.
But that isn't going to stop this old guy from providing state meet written newspaper material that, locally, I haven't seen yet.
In final events, here were the Boone results.
Diving: Jacie Flockhart, sophomore, 25th place, 180.10 diving points.
200 medley relay: Liz Purtle, senior; Regan Peter, senior; Anna Gute, sophomore: Emily Wingert, senior, 7th place,1:50.53, 24 team points.
     50 freestyle: Purtle, 15th place, 24.89, 2 team points.
200 free relay: Gute; Wingert; Marin Powell, senior; Purtle, ninth place, 1:40.27, 18 team points.
400 free relay: Lexi Gradoville, sophomore; Wingert; Powell and Sierra Sherry, sophomore, finished 23rd in 3:47.51.
There were no relay preliminaries. They were all final events.
The Boone team finished with 44 points and a 17th place finish.
In the diving prelims, Flockhart had a score of 399.80.
In the swimming prelims, Gute just missed qualifying in the 100 free. She swam 17th in 56.64 but only 16 swimmers advanced. Purtle swam 25th in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.79 and did not qualify for the final and Peter finished 29th in 1:11.01 in the 100 breaststroke and did not qualify for the final in that event. Purtle was 13th in the 50 freestyle prelims in 24.41 prior to her 15th place performance in 24.89 in the final.
CONGRATULATIONS LADIES......your year long dedication has paid off and those who truly know, have great admiration for what you've accomplished as individuals and as a great team.

AFTER 40 YEARS, A CHANGE OF PLANS

The Kornerman has always had the feeling that more out-of-towners visit our site than those who live in Boone County. If so, we have some important news that may have an impact on your 2021 calendar.
After more than 40 years of having the Pufferbilly event the September weekend after Labor Day, a schedule change has been announced by the Boone County Chamber of Commerce and Pufferbilly Day's Steering Committee.
The 2021 event will be held August 6-8.
Times change and, apparently, the committee felt there's been enough of a change that this move was needed.
They hope the new dates will improve attendance, allow for greater volunteer participation and lessen the burden on local law enforcement among other reasons.
The committee felt that a number of "new" factors through the years have been impacting the festival, apparently in a negative way. Mentioned were competition with such large-scale local events such as the Farm Progress Show, the Super National races, the Iowa/Iowa State football game and the start of the school year, which all seemed to crowd those early September days. That had an effect on hotel space availability, forced decisions to be made on which events to attend and "lessened the overall financial impact of each event on the local economy."
The typical Pufferbilly scheduled events, highlighted by the Saturday parade, will not change much and, in fact, could be enhanced.
So, there you have it. Come........enjoy..........but a month earlier than anticipated.

That old philosopher, Vern Modeland, BHS-50, is just like many of us. We can't get those good old days out of our tired minds.
But here, I'll let him tell you his musings. "our kids and their kids and their kids likely wouldn't slow down to hear or read of how it used to be when downtown Boone was bustling on Saturdays with shoppers walking the sidewalks and shopping the countless things that could be found in those stores that are now empty or bulldozed. What would they think of sitting on the front fenders of cars that had fenders and visiting with most everybody who walked by, 'cause they knew most everybody that walked by? I remember my uncle having to drive downtown Saturday morning and park his bright green Chevy in a key spot so it could be ready for occupation for the evening of commerce and communication that was small town Iowa in the 30's and 40's. No TV, other than the soon-to-arrive small one in the window of the hardware store that had a tall tower on its roof to bring in Omaha, our closest "first" TV station in the region. Today, young people wouldn't be seen "scooping the loop" or gathering to decide on whether or not to drive over to the Story County line and our first area Drive-in Theater."
The Kornerman says, "Oh boy, haven't we "oldtimers" relived those memories time and time again. And, most importantly, they were happy memories."
Vern has a unique way with words. Here's an example: "As I sit here in my cocoon where old people are told to be, or are sent to be, warehoused until they are nothing more than an obituary....which is treated as a final act of advertising income these days, I learn. At one time, they were the first part of the paper read."
Finally, he signed off with......"what will next week bring? Kinder? Gentler? They seem like almost obsolete words today, don't they?"

IT, the election, WILL BE OVER WHEN ITS OVER

Ron Carlson lives right here in good old Boone Iowa after growing up in Ogden.
Some time ago, he had organized a listing of bands who performed out of Boone County from 1962-78 and we had made a note of that in the Korner. He remembered.
These days he's attempting to update that information. He contacted the Kornerman seeking information on a former band member, Fred "Fritz" Westfall. With the help of Fritz longtime friend, Jim Grabau, I was able to pass on information regarding his (Fritz) current location.
Ron emailed that he moved to Boone in 1975, got married in 1978 and settled in. But then, he ping-ponged to Ogden in '86, back to Boone in '93 and he's been settled on Tama Street ever since.
He lost his 33-year job in 2009 but started volunteer work at 99.3 FM/1260 AM when the station was located in the Citizens/U.S. Bank building. That station moved to Des Moines in 2015 and Ron is now employed there. From 2010-16 he also did some work at Walmart in Boone.
Ron says he hasn't played in a band since 1992, mainly due to growing family responsibilities and the lack of time to do so. He has helped a friend out with some recording of music and he likes to do a bit of writing. "I do miss getting together with other musicians. There is something quite pleasing about working together to make music," he explained.
On a sad note, he indicated he had noticed in the Korner the listing of Brian Cottrell's passing. "He was an old friend and I really appreciate the Korner making note of this sort of thing."
Boone's current lack of complete media coverage of area deaths results in this type of situation quite often, which is a sad state of affairs. It only enhances the Korner's attempt to at least, somewhat, rectify that negative.

The Kornerman received some interesting information from Don Nystrom, BHS-56, of Ames this week.
Some good historical info regarding the Masons impact in Boone and their initial home at 602 Story Street, which currently houses the Boone County Historical Society.
It all began locally when a group of Boonesboro residents, who were Masons from various states, banded together and petitioned the Grand Lodge of Iowa to form a Masonic Lodge. That was on June 8, 1855.
That October, the request was granted and Boonesboro Lodge No. 79 was organized.
In 1858, the Boonesboro Lodge name was changed to Mount Olive Lodge No. 79
At that time, the lodge shared a room with the Odd Fellows in the upper floor of the old wooden Boone County Courthouse, which was located at Third and Fremont streets.
In 1865, the city of Boone was established east of Boonesboro, in 1866 it was incorporated as Montana but by 1871, the name had changed back to Boone. The end result was that by 1892, Boonesboro had become the city of Boone's fifth ward.
Movement of the lodge followed. Located on the north side of the public square, the lodge was destroyed by fire which resulted in a move to the second floor of a building that housed Mallory's Drug Store on the north corner of the block.
In December of 1888, Mount Olive consolidated with another Boone lodge, St. Paul Lodge No. 361, and Mount Olive moved to the south side of Eighth Street where the Elks Club has located.
Brother Frank Champlin passed away in 1905 and left sufficient bank stock to erect a new Temple. The Champlin Memorial Masonic Temple was dedicated on December 27,1907 at 602 Story and the Governor of Iowa, Brother Albert B. Cummins was the dedicatory speaker.
That temple served as Mount Olive's home for 83 years, 1907-1990. In '90, Mount Olive moved to their present building, a block east of the old temple.

A BOONE/NBA CONNECTION

O.K., its a little stretchy I know. BUT, any time we can grab a little national attention for our little central Iowa community, we don't feel a bit restricted. We go for it.
Nate Bjorkgren was named the new head coach of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Indiana Pacers last Tuesday. SO.........
Mark Hutcheson, BHS-81, was a good Toreador athlete who later, as the head varsity coach at Storm Lake High School, had Bjorkgren on his squad. Mark had earned a degree at Buena Vista in Storm Lake and after finishing his college playing career, took the reins at Storm Lake high. He provided Bjorkgren, his former player, with his first coaching job, working as a varsity assistant and head coach of the freshmen team at Storm Lake high.
From Storm Lake, Bjorkgren nabbed a head coaching job at Sioux Central high, followed by a move to Arizona and the head job at Cactus Shadows high school in Scottsdale.
After an assistantship with the Iowa Energy of the NBA's G-League, he took the head job with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of that league, followed by the Energy's head job, the top job with the Bakersfield Jam of the G-League, assistant jobs with the Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors of the NBA and, eventually, an interview and offer to become the head coach of the Pacers.
Its been a long road with many stops and it began when Bjorkgren played high school basketball for former Toreador Mark Hutcheson at Storm Lake High School.
Hutcheson is the son of Eldon and Ann Hutcheson of Boone. His wife is the former Amy Hughes, BHS-82, who made a name for herself as one of the state's best softball pitchers in Iowa during her high school days. Her parents are Nancy and Larry Hughes also of Boone.
K-----K
Vern Modeland, BHS-50, is looking backwards. He's wondering, "what do you remember as your favorite hangout during your high school years........restaurant that is."
He went on to recall how his friends met at the place just next door north of the Boone Theatre on  the west side of Story Street. The Bon Appetite no doubt. He also recalls what their best way of initiating a new arrival into the crowd was.
He explained, "the newcomer was told to order a chocolate coke, preferably from the newest waitress who hadn't filled that order before. Immersing a straw in a chocolate coke was sure to create an eruption  of foam that would fill a tray or cascade over the table top for sure."
Vern added, "didn't take a lot to amuse the class of '50 and its predecessors. That was back in those good old days we wish were here again."
The Kornerman concludes, "what a group of wild and crazy guys."
K-----K
BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: GREAT NEWS.......NOTHING TO REPORT.

NUMEROUS DEATH REPORTS

Our Boone community, especially the local education community, is suffering the loss, in just a five-day period, of three of our most esteemed providers. The trio graced us and our children with their enormous talents for just at 100 years.
Dalene O'Brien, 64, passed away on October 20, Darlene Frazier, 90, on October 21 and Karen Hesser, 73, on October 24. Dalene served us for 32 years, Darlene for 33 years and Karen for 36 years.
We're sure that many of their former students, now, in places all over the world, are both in mourning and in gratitude for the inspiration they received from that trio's guidance.
After courageous battles with health issues, their battles are over. May they rest in peace.

Verne Lyon, BHS-61, has a proposed project on his mind.
Verne says he's interested in "re-purposing" an old building at the Ledges State Park.
The building he is talking about was built in the 1920's by the civilian conservation corporation, along with the old trading post, at a site at the south end of the canyon drive. The trading post, however, was taken apart several years ago and re-assembled further up the hill. The remaining building is the old stone restroom that Verne says, "has been unused for probably 35-40 years and the DNR has no plans for it."
Verne insists the building is solid, although it would need a new roof and some new doors and windows  He'd like to see it turned into a gift/snack facility staffed by volunteers and maybe some young folks wanting to make a few dollars.
He's forwarded his idea to the Park Ranger and the "Friend of the Ledges" group but hasn't received much encouragement. He hasn't given up though and intends to try to meet with the DNR about his idea. He would also like to hear from others who may have an interest in aiding this pursuit.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY UPDATE

Here are a few highlights from the latest Boone County Historical Society board meeting.

Some upcoming proposals include making a history scrapbook which would show how our citizens have been surviving the pandemic; having a kid's club twice a month with area "kid's" being urged to download pages of activities regarding Boone County history. Also, there has been discussion about doing "something special" to celebrate a 30th anniversary on October 27. To participate in any of these proposed activities, contact........rita@bchsiowa.org.

In an effort to make sure wording and intent are clear in the bylaws revision, the board has accepted help from an attorney with the Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center at the State University of Iowa.

Financial grants are still being sought and it was reported that one $1,000 grant from Fidelity Grant has been received.

A 30th anniversary cookbook has been discussed and information regarding possible publication, including cost concerns, will be sought.
