Was a DMACC grad and worked as an accountant at ISU for 25 years prior to retirement in 2015. Boone area survivors include sons, Brian and Corey, a daughter, Denise Ballew, and sisters, Eloise Davis and Adeline Hilts, all of Boone. Two other sons also survive.......Ernest Ingram, 81, Boone. Settled in Boone in 1969 so he could finish schooling and graduate from ISU. Worked in the Workforce Development Offices of Boone and Ames before retirement in 2001. Boone area survivors include his wife, Evelyn, son, Brian, and daughters, Linda and Kim, all of Boone.......Dennis Brown, 78, Boone. Born in Fraser. Pilot Mound HS-57. Was a construction foreman for Quad States Construction for 30 years and also owned and operated Browns Elevator Service for 15 years. Bits and Pieces
BITS AND PIECES: (1) It was good to see old friend and former longtime Boone resident Kriss Phillips this week. He was in town from his residences in Arizona and Colorado enroute to a high school class reunion in southeast Iowa. Kriss hasn't changed much but his wife has. Beset by some serious health issues, she is recovering much better now after some surgery. (2) We had mentioned in the obituaries recently the death of Norman Erickson, 92, of Stratford. We didn't mention that Norman and his wife, Margaret, were members of a famous area musical group for 25 years. The Farmers Four quartet (remember?) sang at celebrations, weddings, funerals and on special occasions. (3) It was good to receive a personal letter from Don (Red) Houser, BHS-49, this week. He is so proud of his granddaughter, who is an exceptionally talented lacrosse player in southern California. We had mentioned some of her accomplishments in the Korner. He wrote to thank us and he included some more newspaper clippings highlighting her success.

Pastor Arnold Thoren was a longtime member of the Boone community while he served the Augustana Lutheran Church congregation. He lives in East Moline, IL now and has been battling some health issues. Jamie and Larry Kelley and Bill Sturtz recently visited Pastor Thoren, now in his 80's, and provided some special music as a surprise........an effort to lift his spirits a bit. They're asking that Boone folks who remember Pastor Thoren drop him a note of remembrance and support. Send them in care of his wife, Barbara, at 2130 26th Street, Rock Island, IL 61201.

Worked at car dealerships and was last employed as Sales Manager at Pella Motors. Survivors include his wife, Kelly Buckner Mohrman, three children, his brother, Jeff, his parents, Robert and Cheryl Mohrman, his parents-in-law, Tim and Marcia Buckner, sister-in-law, Shannon Bartley, and his grandmother, Betty Smith.........Marcia Fredrickson, 63, Chicago. Born in Boone in 1953. Her parents were Bob and Jane Low........Dorothy Germer, 99, Boone. Seven daughters survive, Joann Irvine, Barb Low, Nora Dearborn, Portia Martin, Rose Brekke, Linda Crandell and Kay Hammond. One son, David, also survives........Clarice Coffey Gerstein, Ames. BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Esther Gunnink, 80, Boone. Was an elementary teacher for several early years. Boone area survivor is her husband, Norman. Also survived by a son and three daughters.........Ken Shuey, 78, Boone. BHS-56. Was a 31-year veteran of the Iowa National Guard and U.S. Army and served in Viet Nam. Worked for the Iowa DOT for 36 years prior to retirement in 1996. Was a Little League coach and an official of several sports. Also served Iowa State University as the head statistician for Cyclone football and basketball for 35 years. Boone area survivors include his wife, Judy, of Boone and sons, Steve and Monty, and daughter, Sue, all of Ames..........Marjorie Hibner, Ogden Manor. Formerly of Charles City..........Larry Kruse, 76, Ogden. After graduating from Dana HS-58, he attended Boone Junior College for one year. Changes Galore
Classmate Dick Longworth, BHS-53, spoke from Chicago, "it's mind-boggling that little old Ankeny, which was only a wide spot on the road to Des Moines in our time, is probably one of Iowa's ten biggest cities now. Some of your readers may remember a wonderful Des Moines Register columnist, Donald Kaul, who once sponsored a contest of some sort, with Ankeny as first prize. Kaul kept this gag going for a while, then admitted the winner couldn't get his prize because Ankeny was lost in the mail. A quick Googling shows that Ankeny had about 1,200 people in those days and close to 60,000 now. The last time I was there it was a maze of office parks, including the HQ of Casey's General Stores, the gas-and-calorie-station chain that was born in Boone."
Dick added, "all those booming towns you mentioned - Grimes, Johnston, Norwalk, Waukee - are really part of greater Des Moines now, in Polk County, or right next door, in Dallas or Warren counties. You're right that Iowa is growing, but almost all of this growth seems to be in the Des Moines area. Google says the state is up 208,000 since 2000, but just four counties - Polk, Dallas, Story and Warren - account for 160,000 of this. Throw in Linn and Johnson counties (the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City corridor) and you've got a six-county gain of 215,000, which means the rest of the state is losing people. Well, not all the rest of the state but 71 of the 99 counties are down. Boone County hangs in there - down about 1,000 since our day, in the 50's, but up about 400 since 2000. I've been doing a lot of work on Midwestern cities and this is the overall pattern. State centers like Des Moines, Indianapolis, Columbus, Minneapolis are gaining a lot, with suburbs and neighboring counties joining in, but the rest of the states are emptying out. I guess this is the wave of the future but those of us who liked small towns can't help but feel that we're losing something important."
EDITOR'S NOTE: I guess the first time the Kornerman ever even thought about Ankeny, Iowa was in 1948 (I was 13 years old) when one of Boone High's greatest basketball teams battled Ankeny and the three Fontana brothers (remember?) in the Iowa State Boys Basketball Tournament at Iowa City. Out teachers let us listen to the game on the radio. We lost.

Max Moore, BHS-46, tells the Kornerman that " "Red" Houser, BHS-49, told me he is so proud of his granddaughter, Grace, who was voted the top LaCrosse player in California. Many colleges have offered full scholarships and she chose the University of California at Berkley. She was one of the first girls at her school to have her jersey retired. Hope you are doing well, Mo. Keep it up as long as your health is good. I saw your mention of Chuck Lovin's passing. He was well liked in Boone. For many years, we called each other on our birthdays. I'm not a Dor fan, go good old Toreadors for me. Brother Larry, BHS-52, says, "Hi Mo.""
EDITOR'S NOTE: The Kornerman, at an age when I was really "looking up" to star athletes, was so thrilled when Red Houser, a former Toreador, took a kickoff in the Iowa State Cyclones opening game of the '53 (?) season and carried it all the way back to the opponents end zone for a touchdown.
See, I still remember that sixty years plus later.

We didn't attend the band concert this week but I'm told, by usually reliable sources, that Dave Richardson, Director of the Boone Municipal Band, told the audience this will be his last year at that post. He's been the director for 39 years.
What can we say other than.......many, many thanks for all the joy the band, under your outstanding direction, have provided us for such a long, long time. You will certainly be missed but you have definitely earned a rest from those duties after such dedicated service.

The Kornerman headlined in a story late last month that former Boone resident, Jack Lashier, was retiring as Director of the Iowa Hall of Pride as of August 1st.
SURPRISE! His replacement as Director will be the husband of a Boone High School graduate, Holly Wulkow Anderson. The new Director will be Taylor Anderson, who has completed the latest school year as a teacher/coach at Ankeny Centennial High School.
Holly's parents, Rick and Barb Wulkow, reside in Boone of course. Rick is the retired Executive Director of the Iowa Boys High School Athletic Association.

The United Community/Luther areas have been hard hit this week. Sadly, we have a pair of deaths from that area to report.
Good Korner friend, Gary Knox, tells us that his wife, Verdeen Knox, died on June 11, the day after their 56th wedding anniversary. He wrote, "she played post guard for Luther HS and United Community. She played third base on the very competitive Luther girls softball team and also her senior year at United Community."
Then too, Kerry Ray Nicholson, 58, of Ankeny, a 1977 United Community High School graduate, passed away that same day, June 11. Kerry recently completed his 30th year as a U.S. Postal employee. Kerry's wife, Cheryl, and their son, Steven, survive.

On the Street and Chasing News
Last edition the Kornerman wrote about the growth of cities like Ankeny in the metro area.
Vern Modeland, BHS-50, had this response, "Ankeny growing? It had to come. Just driving around the beltway in Des Moines is depressing to this old night-reporter. I'll bet there are streets and such I couldn't even find any more. At WHO news, circa 1950's and 60's, I used to be the "guy covering the street" on anything happening after about 2 a.m. since I went in to work at 6 a.m. with a stop at the cop house first to check the logs. Ah, them good old days. Not "show business or news release reading, but journalism as an ethical career that honed ethical writers. Remember the real Fourth Estate? Regarding your note on never spoiling honey......even 32,000 years old.......I'll bet if you did find it, it would be expensive."
Vern concluded, "home again after a hospital stay for one thing or another and still kicking."
The Kornerman says, "I loved that, "not show business or news release reading, but journalism as an ethical career that honed ethical writers." What in the world has happened to at least some who claim to be real journalists but fall far short of that ethical mark?

Terry Larson, a former Ballard Bomber, responded to our mention last edition regarding the Ames leaning Boone News Republican. He wrote, "around 20 years ago when the Ames paper started a rival Boone newspaper, I wrote a letter to the editor to the Boone News when Schaubs still owned the BNR. The point of my letter was that we should be reading and supporting the Boone News and if we didn't do so, we would find the Boone news relegated to the third page of the Ames Tribune. And, if we wanted to read about the sports exploits of our children and grandchildren we should not expect the Ames paper to adequately cover Boone sports. This is about to come completely to fruition in that the Boone News is already regularly featured on the third page of the Ames Tribune and Boone sports are not at all covered in the Ames paper."
He added, "I have always subscribed to the Ames paper, along with the Boone News, DM Register and USA Today but recently dropped the USA Today. The younger generation thinks you can get all they need from reading only parts of the whole paper shared on the internet. Most newspapers don't put all their news up on the web, let alone their money stream of advertising. Its very sad to see too many people thinking that they can get all their news from the internet, TV or the radio. Your column is great but is additional fodder rather than the main source of daily news for myself and your followers. Nothing is better than the morning coffee and newspaper. From their, research is started on many stories, mainly on the internet, at least in my case, but, newspaper first."
The Kornerman replied that there was nothing in Terry's letter that I can disagree with. True but sad.
In case you have forgotten, "when the Ames paper started a rival Boone newspaper," Terry was referring to the start of the Boone Today and Shopping News..........remember?

Helen also worked for the US postal service in Ogden and Des Moines. Two daughters survive.......Lois Carlson, 93, Palmyra, PA. In 1958, she married Rev. Luke Carlson of Ogden..........Rowena Hurlbut, 100, Ames. She owned and operated several Hallmark gift stores, including the one in Boone. She retired at age 88. Two sons and a daughter survive........Howard Kyle, 86, Ames. Worked for the city of Ames for over 30 years. Boone area survivor is a daughter, Naylene Crispin, of Madrid. One son also survives.

Some Interesting Figures
Local viewers of the Korner are probably well aware of Iowa's population growth but those who made the mistake of moving outside our borders may not be.
In the "old" days, there were lots of miles of cornfields between sizable towns with, perhaps, some smaller communities (very small) dotted between.
Many of those smaller communities have, basically, disappeared while some of the "sizable" towns have shown great growth..........maybe to your surprise.
According to new census estimates, Ankeny, for example, is the 14th fastest-growing community nationwide.........tops in the midwest. With a 4.5 percent growth rate, Ankeny's population is up to 58,627.
Here are some others you may find interesting: Waukee is up 10.9 percent with 19,284; Johnston 7.2 percent at 21,114; little old Grimes 5.4 percent at 11,909 and Norwalk 4.3 percent at 10,590.
Some others like Des Moines, West Des Moines and Ames all show a population increase, just not as pronounced as the ones we mentioned.

If you have access to the Boone News Republican, perhaps you noticed. In the latest edition, there are three major front page stories, all submitted by Ames office writers. SURPRISE? Not really. Makes you wonder how much longer the Boone office will survive. In their defense, the latest BNR editor, who the Kornerman thought was doing a good job, departed and they have yet to find a replacement.

Had a chance to visit with Gayle Rinehart recently and asked about son, Chad, who made us all proud with a nice six/seven year career as an offensive lineman in the National Football League.
Gayle told us that Chad is working in strength training and conditioning as an employee of the Waverly-Shell Rock High school system.
He's married, has a small child and is living in Cedar Falls.

An apple a day? There are 7500 varieties of apples and if you ate one different variety each day, it would take 20 years to chop on all of them.

Jo and I attended the visitation and funeral service for Chuck Lovin and, as anticipated, attendance was high for the well known BHS teacher/coach who passed away at 97 years of age.
It was a light-hearted service and a grand tribute to someone who lived a great life "his way."

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Maxine Anderson, 98, Fayetteville, AR. Born on the family farm in Boxholm. After living in California, returned to the Pilot Mound area to farm with her husband, Harold Brown. Harold passed away but Maxine stayed on the farm until her two boys were in school. Eventually, she moved to Des Moines and started a career with a telephone company. Burial will be at Pilot Mound cemetery............Judi Peterson, 71, Ames. Worked at one time in the accounting department at the Boone County Hospital.........Betty Jean Ray, 90, Boone. Was a teacher. Boone area survivors include daughters, Barb Herrstrom, Sharon Erb and Darlene Doerder, as well as a fourth daughter.

Boone Connected Deaths
Charles (Chuck) Lovin came to Boone in the early 50's and made a definite impact here as a teacher/coach at Boone High School and a community supporter.
Chuck passed away Saturday at age 97.
Tom Peterson, BHS-67, was the first to inform the Korner of his passing. That was followed immediately by notes from Loren Frazier, BHS-58, and Mike Loehrer, BHS-64.
Loren wrote, "I didn't have time for sports in my school days. I worked after school, starting in fourth grade and continuing until I got out of ISU.......but I think I had him for a teacher in the ninth grade. I think it was World Geography and if that recollection is correct, what he taught me "took." I still know quite a bit about world geography. He was a legend in his own time and will be remembered and mourned by hundreds of people whose life he has influenced."
Mike remembered, "if i'm not mistaken, the passing of Coach Blaker last week and then Mr. Lovin means that all of our teachers and coaches from the class of '64 are gone. I know its a part of life but we were so blessed to have such fine role models as parents and teachers. I'll never forget my first encounter with Mr. Lovin. I was in ninth grade and in the Guidance Office with Dick Musser. Mr. Lovin said something to the effect, "Loehrer, I hear you're goofing around in Mr. Brown's science class. I don't remember my comeback but it wasn't a good one. He dropped me like cut wheat. The next I knew, I was seeing stars on the ceiling while on my backside. Gosh, I loved that guy."
I, the Kornerman, also remember having Chuck in a geography class. Not only a good teacher, he was an excellent coach with some outstanding girls basketball and boys golf teams. A good golfer himself, he was also quite the card player...........one of many who played poker quite often in my dad's basement over a 50 year period, believe it or not.
The Korner extends sincere condolences to his daughter, Shelly Dannatt, son, Chuck Jr., and all those who admired and loved him.
BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Rose Perkovich Catron, 85, Altoona. Luther HS. Boone area survivor is a sister, Ann Harris, of Madrid.......Larry Adix, 77, Boone. Was a farmer, drove a milk truck and milked cows. Also drove a tour bus for CIT and school buses for Ames and United Com.
........LTC David Cottington, 82, Copperas Cove, TX. Tall Dave was a very good basketball player at Jordan High School. Services in Texas..........Julie Rickertt, 58, Boone. Worked at Hawkeye Laundry, Merit Baking, HyVee and cleaned homes. Boone area survivors include a son, Jeremy Bogue, and daughter, Stacey Vote, both of Boone........Mary Laube, 92, Boone. Born in Boone County. Was a homemaker. Boone area survivors include sons, Randy of Boone and Jay of Jefferson, and a sister, Vera Lindgren, of Boone.........Bonnie Richard, 68, Pleasant Hill. Her husband, Galen Richard, survives.

Chuck passed away Saturday at age 97.

A Nice Place to Raise a Family
If you remember the 1960's in Boone you, no doubt, remember the Harris family. They had a definite impact. Merle, as Boone High's most successful high school football coach, Litta, who probably "baby sat" or, at least, guided many Boone "young'un's" as a longtime director of the Christian Church Child Care Center, and the "kids".........Mike, BHS-66, Larry and Terry, BHS-71, Patty, BHS-79 and Tim, BHS-81.......via their athletic and academic achievements.
It was extremely interesting to hear from members of that family this week. Tim or Patty indicated that they had received some material from Mary Jo Newbold, BHS-60. Included was a copy of the football game program, Boone vs Ames, Oct. 21, 1960. The Kornerman noted that the starting BHS offensive lineup included Larry Paulson, Steve Trulin, Dave Adams, LaVerne Ivis, Steve Hilts, Tom Burke, Gary McLeod (Mary Jo's brother), Joe Reedholm, George Hannum, Roger McCoy and Terry Ferry.
There was also a column penned by former Boone News Sports Editor Wayne Shaw, dated Nov. 7, 1959, that indicated that Coach Harris initially guided the Toreadors to a 2-6 record in 1958 but followed up with a 4-2-1 mark in '59 which was the best BHS season since 1953. There was also a copy of a BNR game story detailing the Toreadors 1960 season ending victory over Oskaloosa which completed a 7-1 overall season, including a 4-1 second place finish in the Central Iowa Conference. That 7-1 was the best BHS season since the 1928 campaign........32 years prior.
Coach Harris, of course, guided several other outstanding Toreador teams in his remaining years at the helm.
Tim or Patty proudly concluded the email repeating a comment heard in some of the pre-Harris years, "this (Boone) isn't a very good athletic town but its a nice place to raise a family........that was before dad's football teams won how many games in the 60's?"
EDITOR'S NOTE: Oh yes, such exciting times and I, the Kornerman, had such a great experience broadcasting all of the games during those great Harris years.........a career highlight....definitely.

Classmates Mark Tompkins, BHS-60, and John Clymer are touring Europe and keeping the Korner up to date on their adventure.
Mark sent a clipping regarding an important bridge, it read, "in order to secure control of the crossing, General Gavin launches an all-out assault. Casualties on both sides are horrific, but the men of the 507th PIR and the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, supported by tanks brought in from Utah Beach, succeed in occupying the village of Cauquigny on the other side. This battle at LaFiere lasted for three days."
Mark concluded, "as chance would have it, we stayed in the manor within 50 yards of this famous bridge."

Thanks to Karen Anderson we have a full schedule of upcoming events along the Lincoln Highway. Karen commented, "most are in State Center, Marshalltown and/or Colo. It would seem Boone would be "into" Lincoln Highway events since Boone prospered by having the highway go right through town."

Would you believe? Two national baseball home run leaders played for the Des Moines Community College Bears at Boone campus?
Scott Schebler plays right field for the Cincinnati Reds these days and leads the National League with 16 homers. Then there's Jake Adams who has belted 27 home runs for the Iowa Hawkeye baseball team this season. That's an all-time record at SUI and he currently shares the national collegiate leadership in homers. Both played at one time for DMACC at the Boone campus. Schebler was here for one season while Adams racked up 17 and 25 home runs for the Bears in the 2015 and 2016 campaigns.

Boone area survivors include his son, Sean Smith, of Woodward and a sister, Nancy Larson, of Stratford.......Darrell Berglund, 74, Boone........Candace Van Meter, 67, Berkley, IA. Was born in Boone in 1950. Her parents were Robert and Deloris Johnson.
