BOONE CONNECTED DEATH

Lucille Turner, 97, Boone. A son, Morgan Sterner, of Ogden is among the survivors.

BOONE CONNECTED DEATH

John Henry, 65, Boone. Born in Boone. UnitedC HS-74.

A BOONE/NBA CONNECTION

O.K., its a little stretchy I know. BUT, any time we can grab a little national attention for our little central Iowa community, we don't feel a bit restricted. We go for it.
Nate Bjorkgren was named the new head coach of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Indiana Pacers last Tuesday. SO.........
Mark Hutcheson, BHS-81, was a good Toreador athlete who later, as the head varsity coach at Storm Lake High School, had Bjorkgren on his squad. Mark had earned a degree at Buena Vista in Storm Lake and after finishing his college playing career, took the reins at Storm Lake high. He provided Bjorkgren, his former player, with his first coaching job, working as a varsity assistant and head coach of the freshmen team at Storm Lake high.
From Storm Lake, Bjorkgren nabbed a head coaching job at Sioux Central high, followed by a move to Arizona and the head job at Cactus Shadows high school in Scottsdale.
After an assistantship with the Iowa Energy of the NBA's G-League, he took the head job with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of that league, followed by the Energy's head job, the top job with the Bakersfield Jam of the G-League, assistant jobs with the Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors of the NBA and, eventually, an interview and offer to become the head coach of the Pacers.
Its been a long road with many stops and it began when Bjorkgren played high school basketball for former Toreador Mark Hutcheson at Storm Lake High School.
Hutcheson is the son of Eldon and Ann Hutcheson of Boone. His wife is the former Amy Hughes, BHS-82, who made a name for herself as one of the state's best softball pitchers in Iowa during her high school days. Her parents are Nancy and Larry Hughes also of Boone.

Vern Modeland, BHS-50, is looking backwards. He's wondering, "what do you remember as your favorite hangout during your high school years........restaurant that is."
He went on to recall how his friends met at the place just next door north of the Boone Theatre on  the west side of Story Street. The Bon Appetite no doubt. He also recalls what their best way of initiating a new arrival into the crowd was.
He explained, "the newcomer was told to order a chocolate coke, preferably from the newest waitress who hadn't filled that order before. Immersing a straw in a chocolate coke was sure to create an eruption  of foam that would fill a tray or cascade over the table top for sure."
Vern added, "didn't take a lot to amuse the class of '50 and its predecessors. That was back in those good old days we wish were here again."
The Kornerman concludes, "what a group of wild and crazy guys."

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: GREAT NEWS.......NOTHING TO REPORT.

NUMEROUS DEATH REPORTS

Our Boone community, especially the local education community, is suffering the loss, in just a five-day period, of three of our most esteemed providers. The trio graced us and our children with their enormous talents for just at 100 years.
Dalene O'Brien, 64, passed away on October 20, Darlene Frazier, 90, on October 21 and Karen Hesser, 73, on October 24. Dalene served us for 32 years, Darlene for 33 years and Karen for 36 years.
We're sure that many of their former students, now, in places all over the world, are both in mourning and in gratitude for the inspiration they received from that trio's guidance.
After courageous battles with health issues, their battles are over. May they rest in peace.

Verne Lyon, BHS-61, has a proposed project on his mind.
Verne says he's interested in "re-purposing" an old building at the Ledges State Park.
The building he is talking about was built in the 1920's by the civilian conservation corporation, along with the old trading post, at a site at the south end of the canyon drive. The trading post, however, was taken apart several years ago and re-assembled further up the hill. The remaining building is the old stone restroom that Verne says, "has been unused for probably 35-40 years and the DNR has no plans for it."
Verne insists the building is solid, although it would need a new roof and some new doors and windows  He'd like to see it turned into a gift/snack facility staffed by volunteers and maybe some young folks wanting to make a few dollars.
He's forwarded his idea to the Park Ranger and the "Friend of the Ledges" group but hasn't received much encouragement. He hasn't given up though and intends to try to meet with the DNR about his idea. He would also like to hear from others who may have an interest in aiding this pursuit.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY UPDATE

Here are a few highlights from the latest Boone County Historical Society board meeting.

Some upcoming proposals include making a history scrapbook which would show how our citizens have been surviving the pandemic; having a kid's club twice a month with area "kid's" being urged to download pages of activities regarding Boone County history. Also, there has been discussion about doing "something special" to celebrate a 30th anniversary on October 27. To participate in any of these proposed activities, contact........rita@bchsiowa.org.

In an effort to make sure wording and intent are clear in the bylaws revision, the board has accepted help from an attorney with the Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center at the State University of Iowa.

Financial grants are still being sought and it was reported that one $1,000 grant from Fidelity Grant has been received.

A 30th anniversary cookbook has been discussed and information regarding possible publication, including cost concerns, will be sought.

Work is being done on a possible new website design.

A COUPLE MEMORIES

A couple events provided the Kornerman with some memories this week.

David Pestotnik, BHS-62, sent me a newspaper clipping that provided some joy and great memories.

The banner read, "KWBG on Airwaves January 15, 1950." Quite a bit of the enclosed material was historical info about the station from its beginning days. However, the article also included more up-to-date information.....at least at the time of the stories publication.

At that more current time, Dick Johnson was listed as the Station Manager and the other employees included Floyd Killion, Mo Kelley, D. Arthur Dennis (Dennis Borwick), Jerry Sheeder, Bob Corcoran, Pauline Bowman and Betty Callery.

The story mentioned that, in addition to daily news, the station provided other various other community contributions such as the annual "March to Ames" for the March of Dimes.

Oh yes! The march to Ames. Believe it or not, I, the Kornerman, was the KWBG marcher while Jimmy Schroeder represented the Boone JC's. Anyway, he and I walked the distance.......taking phone pledges to the March of Dimes enroute. I guess the biggest thing I remember about it was the body soreness that lasted several days.

K-----K

The untimely death of Cristofer Nystrom, BHS-71, last week also provided some memories.

I haven't seen Cris in quite some time but I certainly haven't forgotten our time together in 1962 when Cris was just nine years old.

That was the year of our great Babe Ruth All-Star baseball team that won state and regional championships and became one of just eight teams in the world to qualify for the Babe Ruth World Series in Bridgeton, New Jersey.

Cris was always at the ballpark in those days and, eventually, became the bat boy for that "62 team and he became a real crowd favorite. The entire team and those in the crowd loved him and he went with us on our complete journey......from Hampton, IA to Wellington, KS and then on to Bridgeton.

It was quite a time and hasn't been forgotten.

So sorry to hear of his death at such an early age. Personal condolences to his family.

As anyone interested knows by now, the annual Iowa by the Sea Picnic in Southern California was cancelled this year. It was scheduled for August 8.
