THINGS THAT MAKE OUR TOWN SPECIAL

Silly as it may seem, in some ways, a couple local news items make me feel like a very young "kid" again. I guess maybe I'm just a small town boy with just small town expectations.
Very young kids eyes just sparkle when they get that first glimpse of Santa or the tree or the gifts. Its as if here was something that was never expected.
Somehow, that's the same type of  excited feeling I get some 80 years later, here in Boone Iowa, when I read about young men being drafted right out of our Boone Campus, Des Moines Community College baseball team by MAJOR LEAGUE teams. WOW!! Can that really be true?
The Super National races at the Boone Speedway each September gives me that same feeling of wonderment.
You mean that our little community is playing host to future Major League baseball players AND individuals who come here each year from border to border and then some to chase national racing glory. YEP!!
Who would have ever thunk it? Not me. But its true. It happens and it gives me an extra heartbeat that such notoriety has come to this little 'burg that I have loved for over 70 years.
First, a news release tells us that a former Boone campus, Des Moines Area Community College baseball standout, Austin Murr, has been drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 2021 Major League baseball draft.
Murr, an outfielder and first baseman, was taken in the sixth round and was the 165th player taken in the draft. His name on the line added $200,000 to his bank account.
BUT HOW ABOUT THIS......He is the 16th DMACC baseball player to be drafted by a Major League team since 2009. Three other DMACC players have signed free agent contracts with Major League teams since 2009.
After outstanding 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons at DMACC which gained him numerous honors athletically and academically, Murr finished out his collegiate career with two years at North Carolina State.
At North Carolina State, he helped the Wolfpack to the 2021 College World Series where they won two games and were one win away from playing for the national championship when COVID interrupted that dream.
Murr was quoted as saying, "I'm thankful for the run we had at NCS and for everybody at DMACC. I wouldn't have had the success I've had at N.C. State without the DMACC coaches and I'm thankful for the opportunity."
Two former DMACC players have actually had excellent Major League careers. In the mid-90's, Corey Koskie went from being a Bears star to a very nice eight-year Major League career which was halted due to a serious injury. He played for the Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers.
Scott Schebler, a Cedar Rapids native, played at DMACC prior to Major League service which began in  2015. He has played the outfield for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels.
Boone Iowa and Boone DMACC campus, a place where young baseball players from many surrounding states come to play the sport with hopes of eventually having an opportunity for further collegiate and even professional play.
Along that same line, Boone Iowa annually hosts at the Boone Speedway the International Motor Contest Association Super National championships.
That event consistently attracts 700 to 900 entrants for a full week of racing in various categories.
AND, the many racers come to central Iowa from all over the USA. Its not unusual for drivers from California, New York, Canada, Texas and all the midwest states from competing and winning national championships here.
So, thanks to Boone Campus, DMACC, Boone Speedway Director Bob Lawton and the IMCA officials for providing this small town boy with events that draw national attention.

CONGRATULATIONS TOREADORS

They just missed! But, what the heck, the Boone High School girls softball team brought great notice to our community with an outstanding run during the now completed season.

Yes, they lost a decision to Epworth, Western Dubuque, 3-1, in the Class 4-A state championship game at Fort Dodge Friday. HOWEVER, here was a team that had never before represented our town and Boone High School in a state championship softball game. And, to earn that place in the title game, they had to upset two opponents who were rated higher than they were coming into tourney play. Quite an accomplishment.

So, it was a season and a team that will live in the hearts of Toreador fans for many years to come.

     CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR OUTSTANDING SEASON.

Tony Crandell, BHS-59, wrote, "I am always interested in the names that John Kueck, BHS-61, and Loren Frazier, BHS-58, bring up, as these folks are all, generally, from my era. Here is one that I don't remember you or them ever mentioning. He was a fixture at BHS sports in all of my BHS years. He never missed a game, or a meet, and was always there encouraging the guys and gals and.....if you ever got hurt, you were in good hands. I'm talking about Dr. C.T. Howard. He was a great guy and a great "encourager." I was never outstanding in any BHS sport but he always remembered my name when I saw him, on or off the field."
The Kornerman says, "yes, he was our "team doctor" when I was playing basketball for the Toreadors in the 50's. I always seemed to have some foot problems.....blisters etc.......and he took excellent care of those. I remember going to his office many times before and after games for treatment. His nurse, Punk Neely, was terrific too. They were a great team. Speaking of Boone High  "team doctors," I can't leave out Dr. Sutton and before him, Dr. Scharnweber, who spent lots of time treating Toreador athletic injuries on their own time."

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Ronald Kruse, 81, Boone. Formerly of Ogden. Born in Canada. The family moved to a farm south of Ogden in 1944. OHS-58. Navy vet. Married Lullabell Kelley in 1994. Ron did custom spraying and had a business, K and T Backhoe, for a time. From 1970-95, he was a Boone fireman. After retirement, he continued to mow the grounds at the Boone Airport and at local cemeteries. Survivors include his wife, Lullabell, of Boone, a son, daughter, a step-daughter and step-sons, including David Kelley of Boone, a brother and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Kruse of Ogden.......Karen Ferguson Keech, 81, Story City. Born in Boone. BHS-58. Growing up she worked in her dad's grocery and at the railroad as a receptionist. She married Richard Keech in 1958 in Boone. They lived on a farm near Story City. She worked in Story City at Harlan's Grocery, 4-Sons Handy Shop, Randall's, McDonald's and for over 20 years, prior to retirement, in ISU dining services. She also sold Avon for many years. CARRYIN' PAPERS

Memories of delivering newspapers in Boone.
John Kueck, BHS-61, wrote, "I was a Boone News Republican paper boy, delivering at a peak of about 120 papers. I don't remember more than a couple residents in my neighborhood that did not subscribe. That supports the 6500 figure, factoring in rural and out of town subscriptions."
Loren Frazier, BHS-58, wrote, "I had two BNR routes during my time working for R.P. Brown, the Circulation Director. My first route started at 7th and Runyan and covered the homes between 8th and 6th streets east of the start point on out to Cedar Street. As I recall, there were about 85 customers on that route. I am trying to come up with some houses that didn't take the paper and I am sure there weren't more than two or three. And, those homeowners may have purchased the paper at their place of work and brought it home."
Loren added, "my second route was Tama Street, from 8th through Aldrich. It was approximately 110 customers if my memory is correct. Again, most every household on that route took the paper. And, the paper was delivered six days a week, come rain or shine. And, even on school "snow days." I might add that I even delivered it on those days that I was too sick to go to school."
"But, back to your recent story. Yes, I agree that most every home in Boone received the BNR daily, and, I recall that there was also a downtown route and I imagine every business took the paper too. Some, like Ed's News Stand, took more than one paper, for resale. I am curious as to how many of our readers, like you and Richard Longworth, were employed by the BNR, however briefly. My stint was fourth grade through ninth grade, my longest job tenure until after the Navy and ISU."

NEWSPAPER STORY DRAWS RESPONSE

The Korner's last edition story about newspapers drew some reaction.
Wouldn't you know that the first reactor would be classmate Richard Longworth, BHS-53, who at an early age,  joined  me in securing lots of ink on our fingers......the Kornerman at the "old and genuine" Boone News Republican and Richard at the BNR, but later as a highly respected and longtime employee of the Chicago Tribune. In plain talk, our experiences, his and mine, were miles and miles apart but during our time we both came to appreciate and still savor those years we devoted to such a worthy venture.
Richard wrote, "that's fascinating stuff on the CR Gazette and other papers. I've spent some time at the Gazette and I knew some staffers there. Apart from the loss of printers' jobs, moving the printing to Des Moines means that the papers will now have to be trucked to CR from Des Moines, an hour-plus trip, which, in turn, means that the paper's deadline will be at least an hour earlier, which, in turn,  means that an hour's worth of local news, including the evening sports scores, won't make it into the paper. Just another money-saving move that nibbles a bit more away of the quality of the finished product."
He questioned, "out of curiosity, do you know what the BNR's circulation was back in our day, the 40's and 50's, when we first got involved there? Back then, the paper blanketed the town. Almost every family took it."
I indicated the figure 6,500 comes easily to mind and Dick replied, "that figures sounds about right.....the number of households in a town of 12,000. That means the BNR hit every front porch in town."
Dick was also curious about the Des Moines Register and whether it was even available in the Boone area anymore. I also provided some answers for that.
Finally, Dick wrote, "yes, I'm in mourning for the Tribune, where I spent the best 30 years of my professional life. After 20 years dismal management, its been bought by a NY hedge fund with a well-deserved reputation for slashing and burning any paper it buys. There's no pretense of covering the news...just making money for the hedge fund. One-quarter of the newsroom has taken a buyout, including all the best columnists, and the paper's been ordered to cut everything, including the size of the paper and the news hole, by 20 per cent. You're right, its heartbreaking."
Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, wrote, "that's really sad about the Gazette because its one of my favorite papers. Sadly, what they are doing is the wave of the future. Columbus, Ohio is the 14th largest city in the country and the Columbus dispatch used to be a great paper but not so anymore. They have done, for a couple years, what the Gazette is doing now. All printing of the paper is done in Indianapolis, three hours away. If the Buckeyes play a Saturday game and its over at 3 p.m., the Dispatch won't have the results until Monday. High school sports info is nil. Friday night games aren't published until Sunday. With modern day instant info on the web, I know international stories almost instantly. If some leader is assassinated the paper won't have the info for 48 hours. Strange world we live in, isn't it?"
K-----K
The Kornerman normally doesn't get involved with coverage of funeral services, celebration of life etc.
However, I'm making an exception. Jim Hallihan was well known in our area as an assistant basketball coach at Iowa State for many years and as the Executive Director of the Iowa Games.
Jim passed away November 20, 2020, and a celebration of life has now been scheduled. It will be held Sunday, August 8, starting at 1 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
K-----K
O.K. Wouldn't you know, on the same day I hear of Hallihan's Celebration of Life, Ken Aldag, BHS-54, informs me that one of my old radio compadre's Ev Hickman's Celebration of Life is now set also.
It will take place, Saturday, September 4, at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone at 11 a.m..

NEWSPAPERS

Our lead story this edition is one I, personally, find very interesting. Perhaps you will view it with disinterest or even disdain BUT I will say this, it will provide some updated material you're unaware of, at least as of Monday, July 12.
For some reason, this main story, which surfaced a few days ago, hasn't been widely circulated. Once again, perhaps its of limited interest to most people.
Its another wonderful but quiet Monday in Boone Iowa and nothing else has stepped forward so, here we go.
From the Associated Press, "The Gazette will move printing operations to Des Moines. Folience, the parent company of the Gazette newspaper in  Cedar Rapids, says it will close its printing operations there and move the printing of several publications to Des Moines. Folience said it will stop newspaper printing at its subsidiary, Color Web Printers in Cedar Rapids, on August 31. The closure will impact 34 full-time and eight part-time employees. The printing of the Gazette, Southeast Iowa Union, Washington Evening Journal, Mt. Pleasant News, Fairfield Ledger, PennySaver and The Shopper will be transferred to Gannett Publishing Services in Des Moines. Folience CEO Daniel Goldstein called it, "a very difficult decision," noting it will impact some long-time employees. But, he says the changing economics and ongoing consolidation of the print industry demanded the change."
The Cedar Rapids Gazette has always been one of Iowa's top newspapers via circulation. Here is  a good time to insert a list of the top eight Iowa dailies and their circulation.
     (1) You know who! 71,829. (2) Gazette, 36,946. (3) Quad City Times, 26,845. (4) Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier, 25,457. (5) Sioux City Journal, 23,499. (6) Dubuque Telegraph Herald, 22,619. (7)  Burlington Hawkeye, 16,231, and the Mason City Globe Gazette, 10,837.
By the way, the Burlington Hawkeye is the state's oldest newspaper.
To me, the Register's fall is the real shocker. City View in Des Moines is at 29,417.
Looking at area newspapers: Ames Daily Tribune, 14,000; Boone? News Republican, 1799; Dallas County News, 2050; Madrid Register-News, 1250; Nevada Journal, 3153; Ogden Reporter, 2000; Tri-County Times, 2870, and Stratford is hanging on with 465.
Full Disclosure: These figures I'm using are taken from the Iowa Newspaper Association web site and I do notice some differences in some cases........a newspaper can appear twice on the same page but with slightly different circulation figures.
There are still 282 newspapers in Iowa that offer paid circulation.
Just for fun......the most circulated newspaper in the U.S. is the Wall Street Journal with some 2.2 million subscribers BUT the largest in the world is the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper of Japan with some 10 million viewers.
Other than the Wall Street Journal, some of the other top circulated U.S. newspapers, in order, are the New York Times; Los Angeles Times; New York Post; Washington Post and Minneapolis Star Tribune.
An early morning coffee or other treat, along with the latest newspaper is still an envied product, when available, but, as the world turns in a different direction, those "times" are fleeting at a much too fast pace.
    K-----K
I know this is strange.......but......somewhere, recently, I heard a speaker claim someone was, "deader than a doornail." I pondered that and wondered, "what is a doornail?"
There are many "figures of speech" that, like that one, pose more questions than answers but most seem to have an explanation. One explanation I found was simply,"it means dead, very dead, quite dead and certainly dead." But, I also found a more detailed explanation.
Dead as a doornail is a phrase which means, not alive, unequivocally deceased. The term goes back to the 1300's, which is found in poems of the time. The term was used in the 1500's by William Shakespeare, and in Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol in 1843. It is thought that the phrase comes from the manner of securing doornails, which were hammered into a door by clenching them. Clenching is the practice of bending over the protruding end of the nail and hammering it into the wood. When the nail has been clenched, it has been dead nailed, and is not easily resurrected to use again.
Finally, the Kornerman says, "oh...you folks are so lucky. The avalanche of educational material you receive from the Korner.....its overwhelming sometimes. Enjoy and absorb."

A MEMORY OR TWO

A REMINDER.......BOONE MUNICIPAL BAND FESTIVAL IS TODAY.

Andy Anderson, BHS-62, wrote, "If I played  for the Washington Redskins, I'd now say, "I played for the Washington Football Team". Therefore, if I mention my alma mater, I'd say, "I graduated from UNI". One of the new names is reflective. The other is merely political posturing! Is this logical reasoning? Please keep this Korner going. Thanks for the Pufferbilly information. If one wants to see folks and reunion attendees, what a time to go!! BHS-62/UNI-67.

John Kueck, BHS-61, wrote, "I was cooking hamburgers tonight, which brought back my teenage memory of the tiny hamburger cafe by the Fort Dodge railroad tracks. Perhaps you've written about it before. It seemed unique for its time. I used to stop there on Saturday when I went by on my paper route. I think burgers were 25 cents and maybe five for a dollar that I opted for on occasion. They were tiny burgers and smaller than today's sliders, but I loved them. As I recall, it was a tiny menu with, possibly, tenderloins too. You sat on the few stools overlooking the grill. It was fascinating in those days for me to be so close to the cooking. Do you remember the owner? When did it close? It has to be a memorable part of Boone....one of a kind."
The Kornerman says, "Oh yes, I've mentioned that cafe many times. Squrrel Moore, quite an athlete in his time.....in baseball and also a member of those hotshot state champion BHS basketball teams of the 1920's, was the operator of that restaurant. I think the burgers were a dime and yes, pretty thin."
