Gary Knox, UC-58, had some thoughts about the school enrollments that appeared in the last edition.
Gary wrote, "when I read your school enrollments for the old CIC teams that had Newton 51st with 638 HS students, I was stunned. The year I began teaching at Newton, the graduation class of 1967 had nearly 400 graduating seniors. At that time, grades 10-12 had around 1,100 students and there were two middle schools, grades 7-9. There were 8 elementary schools, grades K-6. Now, Newton has a senior high with grades 9-12, one middle school and 5 elementary schools."
He added, "In 1954, I was a freshman at Jordan HS with 47 students, grades 9-12. We played similarly sized schools in baseball and basketball......Slater, Boxholm, Pilot Mound, Luther, Napier, McCallsburg and also played the larger Boone JV, Madrid and Ogden. Now, look at the size of Slater (Ballard) and Gilbert thanks to their proximity to Ames. Ogden and Madrid struggle to survive but the rest......gone."
The Kornerman says, "Gilbert is 83rd with 381 students and Ballard is 84th with 379.

Old bud Larry Kelley, BHS-64, is still trying to completely track down ALL of the KWBG alumni from its beginning March 2, 1950. He thinks he's close to completing that task. However, he is still seeking a female news reporter that worked at the station in 1975-76.
The Kornerman says, "I was done in 1970 and have no knowledge to provide."
Maybe someone out there in Kornerland does.

Bill Olson, BHS-62, passed on some info that may provide some inspirational aid in getting through this Coronavirus situation. Actually, Bill had received it from Karen Keys, BHS-62.
Karen wrote to Bill, "there is a movie everyone should see. It is called, "Before the Wrath" by Brent Miller Jr. and Ingenuity Films and narrated by Kevin Sorbo. It is so uplifting. It is probably on Amazon or www.beforethewrath.com or www.ingenuityfilms.com."
K-----K
Nelson Tompkins, BHS-57, added a little humor to the present abyss. He sent, "they said a mask and  gloves were enough to go to the grocery store. THEY LIED. Everyone else had clothes on."
     and
Kathleen Wheelock has added some Phyllis Diller memories:
     (1) As beauty fades, so will his eyesight.
     (2) Housework can't kill you, but why take a chance.
     (3) Best way to get rid of kitchen odors? Eat out.
     (4) You know you're old if they have discontinued your blood type.
     (5) The reason women don't play football is because 11 of them would never wear the same outfit in public.

ANSWERING THE CALL

I, the Kornerman, is so proud of Korner viewers response to our recent call for help for those brave plaintiffs who, for so long, battled the lawsuit filed against the Boone County Historical Society and found themselves in deep personal debt as a result.
One of them, Linda Millis, wrote, "I cannot thank you enough for all your help. Your blog has communicated our need to people across the entire country. Not only are we beginning to receive donations from your far-flung readers, we are also hearing of their personal connections to Boone and Mamie and that adds to our store of Mamie stories for the docents."
More information, a new balance, should be available at the end of the month.
But hey, I can't imagine that near enough has been received to make enough of a dent in a rather large obligation.
SO, if you are one who has completely forgotten or misplaced our plea for help or, for some other reason, have not responded yet, here's one more plea to do whatever you can do. Regardless, I am so proud of those of you who have already provided help.
This Korner, small in numbers compared to many blogs, contains a solid group of great people, who have empathy for people in need and are "on deck" for good causes.
Speaking personally and for the plaintiffs, thank you so much.
Save Our Museums, P.O. Box  224, Boone, Iowa 50036.....515-210-0877.
K-----K
Here's a subject you may not give a darn about but, for some reason, the Kornerman always finds this interesting.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union use school enrollment figures to determine what schools compete in what classes of competition.
The latest IHSAA figures for grades 9, 10, 11 have been posted. These are the figures that will be used for placing schools in their proper classes of competition for the 2020-21 school year.
THERE IS A NEW LARGEST HIGH SCHOOL IN IOWA.
It seems Valley, West Des Moines, has been the leader for years BUT their neighbor, Waukee, that's right, Waukee, has taken over. Waukee has 2,267 students in those three grades while Valley has 2,192.
The remainder of the top ten: Des Moines Lincoln, 1,776; Johnston, 1,763; Linn-Mar, Marion, 1,702; Southeast Polk, 1,605; Des Moines Roosevelt, 1,566; Des Moines East, 1,560; Waterloo, West, 1,345 and Dubuque Hempstead, 1,337.
Then, of course, the Kornerman is always interested in our county schools. Boone is 61st with 482 students; Ogden is 216th with 153 and Madrid is 219th with 152. There are ties among some schools along the way of course.
By the way, there are a total of  365 member schools. Somebody has to be last.....Promise Academy of Quakerdale has nine students in those three grades; Ottumwa Christian 10; North Iowa Christian School 17; South Page, College Springs 18; both Scattergood Friends and Cedar Valley Christian 21 and Iowa School for the Deaf, 23. Being members, they are all eligible to compete in any IHSAA sports offered.
Diagonal has 26 students and is part of that bottom ten group.
Being an old guy, I remember when Diagonal battled the big boys for state basketball honors.
In 1938, Diagonal defeated Rolfe, 31-29, for the state championship. A year later, Diagonal was runnerup  to Creston, losing 25-20, AND THIS WAS BEFORE THE MULTIPLE CLASS SYSTEM WAS STARTED. EVERY SIZE SCHOOL WAS MERGED INTO ONE HUGE CLASS.
Some other oldtimers may wonder about the old Central Iowa Conference members. Marshalltown is 23rd with 1,135; Ames 29th with 1,046; Newton 51st with 638; Oskaloosa 60th with 484 and Grinnell 85th with 378.
Back to Boone. As long as I've got it in front of me, here's our boys basketball history.
In 1920 and 1921, there were actually two state championship tournaments and one was held at Ames. In that Ames tourney, in both 1920 and 1921, Boone was, at least, half of a state champion. They stopped Spirit Lake, 20-15 in the title game in 1920 and defeated LuVerne, 23-16, in the championship game of 1921.
State tournaments operated by the Iowa High School Athletic Association began in 1923.
In 1926, in a Division A portion of the tourney, Boone, Cedar Rapids Washington and Webster City all finished with 1-2 records to tie for second place. Newton was the winner.
Boone's crown jewel, of course, occurred in 1931 when the Toreadors won the state championship by beating Muscatine, 16-11, at Drake Fieldhouse.
The Des Moines Register reported that fans were turned away due to the fact that over 10,000 were packed "inside" for the game. It also reported that this was the largest crowd to ever attend any basketball game in Iowa up to that point.....and that included college games.
The Toreadors have also appeared in the state meets of 1948 and 1963.

TIME DOES PASS

As imagined, it did come AND now its gone. The Kornerman's birthday that is. We all hope this coronavirus thing disappears as quickly as the cards and cake.
With all that's going on in our world right now, it was so inspiring to hear good wishes from so many of you. I hadn't heard from Steve Hilts, BHS-62, for quite some time and he was one of the first presenters. He added a note to the greeting, "thanks for keeping us tied to wonderful Boone, Iowa." That short note, in itself, means a lot to the oldtimer. I mean we all need a little boost on occasion to realize that what we're doing does have some meaning to some people.
I don't dare try to start listing all those I've heard from but thank you, thank you, thank you for the many greetings and well wishes. Good old John Smith even made a personal visit to my door.
I'm at a point where I don't like to advertise my age anymore. I will give you this clue and you can decide whether the answer is worth persuing. I won't be seeing 84 again. Now, go figure.
K-----K
It was pointed out to me that I made a mistake. We don't like that but those things happen.
In Mike Bennett's obituary, we mentioned he was an important part of the Toreadors 1963 state tournament basketball team.
We discovered there are two Mike Bennett's......Michael V. BHS-64, and Michael Lee, BHS-65.
It was the Mike, BHS-65, who just passed away but it was the other Mike, BHS-64, that was on that successful Boone basketball team.

HELP NEEDED

Let's not tarry. No sugar coating either. Let's get right to the point.
Yes, the Boone County Historical Society lawsuit has come to a successful conclusion.
HOWEVER, the four very generous, very dedicated plaintiffs, who "stuck their neck way out" for BCHS patrons and the Boone community for over 18 months now need "our" help.
Financial support has dwindled and there's a final bill of $23,353.97 to get paid before April 30. That onus is on the four.
Here's the very positive skinny: (1) The group prevented the sale of the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace. The birthplace reopened in July for the remainder of the 2019 season and will open this spring for a full regular season. (2) Under a new board, the BCHS, despite all the damage that was inflicted, has settled into a functioning entity again, paying the bills and planning for the future.
From July 2018 to February 2019, there was an active effort by several individuals to raise funds needed to support the lawsuit. But, for the remainder of 2019, the four brave plaintiffs have been left, on their own, to see the lawsuit through to its conclusion.
A settlement was received but that was needed immediately for application to past due legal fees. The current outstanding balance remained.
To date, generous support has been received from 39 individual donors and one group and some have donated multiple times. Actually, the largest donor has been the BCHS attorney, Jason Casini, and the law firm of Whitfield & Eddy of Des Moines.
While the lawsuit was pending, the plaintiffs were not allowed to publicly ask for financial help.
That brings the situation forward, to today...........a big, final bill and a deadline for payment to extricate the plaintiffs from any further personal obligations.
The foursome have done all this for us, those Boone County citizens interested in maintaining a local treasure trove of local historical information and for the general interest of Boone County.
Its now our turn to "answer their call for help."
Honestly, the Kelley's don't have thousands to give but we will give what we can and if everyone else does the same, we may have a surprising result.
As they say, "no amount is too small" and the more volume the better.
Mail to Save Our Museums, P.O. Box 224, Boone, Iowa 50036 OR if you have a special gift to discuss or some ideas on how this bill can be nuked, call Linda Millis (515-210-0877).
Thanks for doing whatever you feel comfortable doing and "tell'um" the Kornerman sent you.

SOME FOLLOWUPS

Here is some additional information regarding recent Korner stories.
     (1) Two former Boone High School athletes competed in the Olympic marathon trials in Atlanta last Saturday.
In the women's division, there were 390 runners and Danna Kelly Herrick, BHS-2005, finished 43rd in 2:39.59. The winner was Alphine Tuliamuk who ran 2:27.23.
There were 175 men involved in the competition and Brogan Austin, BHS-2010, finished 48th in 2:18.36. The winner was Galen Rupp who ran 2:09.20.
Congratulations to those former Toreadors on their great performances in very stiff competition.
     (2) In answer to our report on the death of Jerry Kinney, Bernie Lewiston, Perry HS-60, replied.  "I was also very sorry to learn of Jerry's passing. Some of our kids had Jerry as a band director when he was at Ogden and they loved him. I was active in the Ogden Music Boosters in the early 1980's and worked with Jerry on several projects, including a trip to Dakota Band Days in Rapid City and buying new uniforms. Jerry was always looking for new adventures, and put together a small band, here in Ogden, of some of us adults, plus a few younger folks. We played polkas, marches, waltzes, and some dixieland and had a great time. I played bass horn, which I hadn't played since 1960 when I graduated from Perry High School. Jerry helped me get back to speed. He and his wife, Sandy, played trumpets, the late Stan Friesan, Ogden High School Principal, played trombone, and we picked up occasional other instrumentalists as they were available. I painted a hay rack blue and white. We hooked it behind my pickup, which wife Evelyn drove, and we were in several surrounding town parades as well as in the Ogden Fun Days parade. We also played at various other events in Ogden. It all ended when Jerry took another job and left town with his trumpet and all the music."
     (3) Loren Frazier, BHS-58, wrote, "At our 60-year class reunion in October of 2018, I brought up the fact that there might be a class 80th birthday celebration in 2020. There was mention that Nashville might be a good location. After contacting several classmates, I've found that there is a consensus that having it in Boone might be better attended. So plans are underway and the likely dates are September 15-17, 2020. On the 16th and 17th we will plan on either a lunch or dinner. On the 15th, if there are enough classmates, locally, or arriving attendees we will plan on an evening get-together. Please let me know if you have a preference for either lunch or dinner on each of the dates September 16 and 17. The locations will be determined and other decisions made when we find out how many attendees we will have. Please let me know of your plans to attend and and questions or suggestions."
