BE SAFE OVER THE NEW YEAR'S HOLIDAY

When I, the Kornerman, was covering sports for the Boone News Republican in the 1960's, I had the pleasure of watching Rita Peterson compete in the back court, that's at guard in the six-on-six days, for the Grand Community basketball team.........a team that earned its way into the 1960 Iowa State tournament.
Looking back over 60 years or so of watching lots of area athletic teams and players, I've found its easy to think about certain ones who's achievements were just a bit more SPECIAL. Rita Peterson fit that category.
She attended the Boxholm/Grand Community schools, graduating in 1960 and was named a first team all-stater. Cat quick, she earned a well-deserved nickname, a "5-5 pepperpot."
I was sorry to see that Rita Peterson Thompson, 77, passed away recently. Services will be in Eldora Monday. Rita was an R.N., working at various places during a career that ended with retirement in 1998. Survivors include her husband, Paul, two daughters, a sister and two brothers.

BOONE HISTORICAL SOCIETY IMPROVEMENT

The latest on the Boone Historical Society: In their recent publication, the Board President, Jessica Stanley, wrote regarding the society's 2019 year. "We started out with a bleak situation; closed museums, past due bills, a lawsuit, and a board walkout. But our members gathered and worked together on actions to go from an uncertain future to being able to have our two main sites open for business, all bills paid, and a solid business plan for the future. Our main exhibits are looking great and our lower level meeting room looks amazing with its new makeover."
Its reported that since its reopening on June 29, Mamie's birthplace has had approximately 425 visitors from numerous cities in Iowa, 35 states, British Columbia, Canada, Bejing, China and Adelaide, Australia.Work is underway to restore the birthplace basement, with plans to have the Mamie museum completed when the site is reopened.
The newsletter pays tribute to Joan Logsdon Hamilton, BHS-52, for her 27 years as a docent at the birthplace. In addition, for the past seven years, Joan has scheduled two docents per day, six days per week.
It was announced that plans are underway to design and set up new exhibits at the History Center and the first new exhibit will honor Fareway Stores Inc.
This is all wonderful news. HOWEVER, financial support and volunteerism is still a dire need for the complete "rebirth" of both the birthplace and History Center. Membership and a willingness to help in various other ways will go a long way toward this goal. Boone County Historical Society, P.O. Box 172, Boone, Iowa 50036.

Charlie Lind, BHS-65. A name out of the Kornerman's past and perhaps your past as well.
Charlie was an important member of the Boone Babe Ruth all-star team that was so successful in 1962........winning the Iowa and seven-state Regional championships and advancing to one of only eight teams in the world participating in the Ruth World Series in Bridgeton, New Jersey. The Kornerman was lucky enough to be the manager of that team.
I recall so vividly a very important home run that Charlie hit. I believe it was in the state championship game played in Hampton or was it New Hampton? Anyway, Charlie's homer was a vital part of our victory.
Shortly after college, Charlie moved to Missouri and has been a resident of Mexico, MO ever since. He's retired now after many years as the high school Athletic Director there.
Classmate Bob Atherton provided us with this information. Bob wrote, "Mexico is about the size of Boone and as you would expect, everyone in town knows and loves Charlie."
Bob added, "I can't help but remember how we all grew up together and played all the sports...John Morton's Duffy Braves trying to beat the Rotary Club Pirates for our only victories of the year. And, I'll never forget Saturday's at the YMCA shooting hoops in that old basement gym."
On a more personal note, Bob wrote, "We were in Boone November 11 for my mom Betty Atherton's 98th birthday. She is doing well and always reads your Korner. You are a lifeline to the ones like me who are a long way from Boone but want to stay connected. Tim Croxen,  BHS-59, Roger Dutton, BHS-63, and Tom Peterson, BHS-67, have all reached out with visits to mom and she was thrilled.......thanks to you."

BAD NEWS BUT THEN GOOD NEWS

Starting with the bad news. Yes, its time to admit, it is necessary for the Kornerman to lean more and more on a cane. I held out a long time but returning symptoms of a bout with polio/spinal meningitis 70 years ago, plus more recent broken hip and knee replacement surgeries, finally forced the required decision. And, what the heck!! This drama is nothing, nothing, compared to negative health stories I hear about and see, via other folks, on a daily basis. I still feel blessed over and over again that I can do what I can do.......and, even better now, with a cane by my side.
How about the good news? In the short time I've "caned," I've changed my perspective about the tenor of, at least, a portion of our population. Sure, there are lots of "bad apples" out there but I've come to understand not nearly as many as I may have anticipated earlier.
This experience has sparked me to the realization we have lots of very good people on this planet, worldwide, in the good old USA, in Iowa and right here in Boone County Iowa as well.
I know, Boone Iowa is a very small microcosm of a gargantuan world but, on an almost daily basis recently, good deeds I've been offered have provided me with a personal "awakening" about people's goodness, specificially, those here, close to home.
My benefactors have come in various sizes and ages, some are known friends but many others were strangers. Some have been dressed to a "T" and others have shown the wear and tear of less than an easy life but so many friendly greetings, offers of aid at doorways, nasty curbs and various other obstacles have brought a smile to an 84-year old face. Truthfully, many wouldn't have even been necessary but "they," apparently, felt there might a need and followed up with an unsolicited and genuine offer of aid.
Its been enlightening, encouraging etc. etc. etc.
Just let me say it again, I've rediscovered that there are still lots of very good, caring people "out there."
K-----K
No particular reason for this.....and I, the Kornerman, can't remember what it came from. I simply like it.
"If you put effort in and you don't get the desired result, people may think you lose.....but  you don't. Your glory is delayed, it is not denied. You decide when its over, and if you don't get it in your lifetime, the kids you raise, the neighbors who see you.....will be inspired by you and you can revel in  their success."
K-----K
John, BHS-64, and Linda Hinz, BHS-67, are this year's "early birds." Christmas card number one has been received......and is much appreciated.
K-----K
Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, has some comments on recent Korner talk. He wrote, "I went to BJC, spring semester, of my frosh year, in '65. Surprisingly, one of my favorite college subjects ever was taught by Bill Ryan and it was botany. Who would have thought a guy who only pounded basketballs and threw baseballs would find flowers that interesting?"
On another subject, he was talking about all the upcoming football bowl games...."I remember when Parsons College (Fairfield) played in the Mineral Bowl game. The name Nate Craddock comes to mind," Mike remembered.
The Kornerman says, "Oh yes, Parsons College had a nice run in Fairfield and I remember that Dr. Millard Roberts was the President and  main "pusher" of that institution, which closed in 1973. During that time, I also recall that Dr. Roberts came to Boone as the main speaker at some community event, perhaps the annual chamber meeting. Craddock reminds me of a good football player who was originally a Des Moines North high product."

BOONE CONNECTED  DEATHS: Edwin Barker, 91, Iowa City. Simpson, Iowa State Teachers college. Spent 27 years in the education field starting at Stanhope for two years. He was the Boone Junior Senior high Principal from the summer of 1964 to December of 1967 when he moved to Iowa City to become the Principal of a brand new Iowa City West High School, which opened in 1968. Survivors include his wife, Ethel, two sons and two daughters..........Jean Richard Ahrens, 89, Stratford.

HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY

Barbara Mathis Gohman, BHS-67, wrote, "Steve Mathis, BHS-64, has been a ham radio guy for many years. He is also a private pilot living in Montrose, CO. My brother credits much of his interest in electronics to one of his favorite teachers, H.L. Cunningham."
Editors Note: Oh yes, H.L.......a favorite along with Hal Lyness and others. Really, if you viewers were to name a Top Five BHS instructors in your time, who would be included? Interesting thought.
K-----K
Back to more ham radio talk from info received from Chuck Brainard, BHS-50, aka Chazz Bee. As we mentioned in an earlier Korner, Chuck mentioned talking to Barry Goldwater, Arthur Godfrey and King Hussein of Jordan via ham radio. He also indicated that Tim "the Toolman" Allen and Donny Osmond are also ham operators. He wrote, "probably my most interesting contact, ever, was with a Scottish engineer, Scottie Benbrackie, who was part of the team that placed the very first satellite into Geo-stationary orbit, this one was directly over the North Pole. That was a very long time ago. Those things litter the sky now."
Chuck added, "I was in Somalia for a bit in early 1993 installing my equipment for the UN/Pakistan Army and operated from there as TSCB. I don't plan to return, once was enough. Upon my return from there, I was talking with a ham in Tanzania and he knew a relief agency couple that I met on the UN flight out of Nairobi, Kenya to Mogadishu in Somalia. Small world. My agent in Pakistan, Tariq Janjua (SK) was AP2TJ. While in Mogadishu, and billeted at the airport there, I saw lots of interesting airplanes and since I'm a pilot, I paid attention. One was the largest aircraft in the world, the Russian Illushyan. That thing is huge. Our ride back to Nairobi was in a UN Cessna Citation biz jet that would easily fit inside the Russian bird. At night in Mogadishu, as aircraft took off, they would go totally dark, immediately, on lift off. Snipers. The local people were happy as could be that relief was there. They would applaud us as we, sometimes, drove by. The ruling War Lords, not so much?"
Chuck mentioned, "I have confirmed contacts from 354 different countries. Some have dropped by the wayside, East Germany for instance. Again, ham radio is a great hobby, for all ages."

HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWS

BREAKING NEWS: Regarding that exceedingly long Boone Historical Society/Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace dilemna, its now official. The lawsuit portion has been settled.
Unfortunately, the time has NOT come yet for official and minute details.
In addition, there are still other segments of the entire episode, particularly involving individuals, that have not been completely resolved. As a result, this reporter will not, at this time, get involved in these "incompletes."
Here's what can be said, at this time, as a direct result of the lawsuit termination.
     (1) It did result in the facilitation and removal of the former Society board and its director.
     (2) It did prevent the sale of the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace.
     (3) At one point, a mediation process was involved. That resulted in, among other things, denial of a change of venue for the proceedings, dismissal of some defendants counterclaims, a motion that obligated the former director to finish her desposition, which had lingered for quite some time, and a motion for a protective order to shield the former Society Board President from having to be deposed.
The bad/sad part of all this is that legal fees have continued to be accrued. All fees have been paid through September but billing has not been received for October and November.
A member of the defense team has worked to minimize the fees as much as possible. In fact, he's been the single largest contributor to the cost of this case. HOWEVER?
So, financial help is needed. Checks can be made out to Save Our Museums and mailed to P.O. Box 224, Boone, Iowa 50036.
K-----K
With help from viewers, let's continue our talk about ham radio interest.
Bernie Lewiston wrote, "my early morning radio group is the Christian Amateur Radio Fellowship. It was formed in 1966 to keep in communication with missionaries in foreign countries. Newer technology has replaced that need, so now we meet for fellowship, prayer concerns, and general banter. Also, we are ready to go if the cell phones or internet should happen to fail. The other morning net is the Eyebank Net, which was organized in 1962 by two eye doctors a the University of Iowa. The purpose was for locating and arranging for the distribution of eye tissue to be used in sight saving emergency corneal transplant operations. Here again, newer technology has replaced the need for the radio net, but the International Eye Bank Association has asked us to continue in case the newer methods should ever fail. This net is now led by an eye doctor in Great Bend, KS. We usually check weather and radio propagation, and general banter. My call is KBOL" (O.K. I'm stumped. That O should have a / inside it.......but I haven't got a clue. Teach me Bernie.
EDITOR'S NOTE: The Kornerman was particularly interested in the comment that read, "if cell phones or the internet should happen to fail." Though such a failure, and its ramifications, have lingered way back in my mind, I had never contemplated that ham radio might be a "savior" in such a case. That possibility is very welcoming. I guess I'd appreciate more info in this regard.
K-----K
We still have more interesting ham radio news courtesy of Chuck Brainard, BHS-50, that we will be using in upcoming editions.

HAM RADIO OPERATIONS

Larry Lindmark, BHS-63, actually got this edition started Saturday with a short note mentioning ham radio operations. That sparked some audience interest.
Former (I was going to say "old" but.....) workmate, Bernie Lewiston wrote, "you certainly got my interest when you repeated Larry's mention of ham radio. I earned my first license in 1957 when I was a freshman at Perry High School. My activity has been on and off over the years, but I am very active now. I currently hold an Amateur Extra Class license, the highest class available. Every morning, I am "on the air" at 5:30 a.m. talking to a group of guys in the eastern, southeast and midwestern parts of the U.S.. One guy checks in from Columbia, South America but he uses a computer to access amateur stations in the U.S..Then, I check in with another group at 7:45 a.m..We also have an Iowa traffic net that meets twice daily at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m..I, occasionally, participate in some contests and contact foreign stations either by morse code or by voice. As you may recall, when I was at KWBG I was the Chief Engineer, and I still hold a commercial radio operator license."
EDITOR'S NOTE: Sure sounds like something of great interest......just like a "local" coffee gathering except featuring chatter from all over the world..........rather than the latest police report and/or local business move. Interesting to hear from "different" voices and opinions. Also noted is the fact that its quite obvious my old buddy no longer has a "real job." Idle time is dominant.

Chazz Bee, aka Chuck Brainard, BHS-50, offered a lengthy reply......some, of which, your editor would term, "very technical." As a result, we'll break it up a bit with some "news" this time and a continuation of the more technical aspect in the next edition.
Chuck wrote, "Both Vern Modeland - WOJOG, and myself, Chuck Brainard - KA1PM, both BHS '50 are active hams, both were licensed in the 60's. Others from BHS-50 that I recall were hams were Chuck Anderson and Dave Hudson, both SK (Silent Key) now. It's a great hobby. Although I hold a degree in Geology, my ham radio license opened doors and I worked in the electronic industry for some time and then started my own company in 1986, designing and manufacturing antennas, ham, commercial and MIL. I sold it in 2004, it moved to Michigan when it is still "getting after it". I've met and worked with some great minds due to my hobby, Art Collins of Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids and Seymour Cray of Cray Research and Cray Computing (super computers.) People that you might know of that I've talked to comprise a small list, Barry Goldwater - K7UGA, Arthur Godfrey and King Hussein of Jordan - JY1. Tim "the Tool Man" is a ham as is Donny Osmond but I've not talked to them."
EDITOR'S NOTE: This is interesting material and we'll continue next edition with Chuck's recollections of overseas work and contacts.

OLD FRANKLIN

In response to our last edition, Tony Crandell, BHS-59, wrote, "Ah yes.....Boone J.C..I remember well......the old Franklin building. I was there September of 1959 until May of 1961. I was one, of many, who volunteered to dig out, by hand, part of the unfinished basement for the snack bar. Some of the instructors I remember were Winifred Barquist, Lyle Poyzer, Miss Tisdale and Everett Porter. Everybody liked Everett and his crooked pipe. Although I never made the Dean's list, I was sent to the Dean's office a couple of times. Bob Gunderson, now deceased, an old KWBG alum, and I were there together. We both worked at KWBG until Bob went to the Air Force. I left KWBG and went to Fort Leonard Wood in 1963."
Your editor missed out on that experience. When I attended, the college was located on the third floor of the high school building. Yes, I'm a proud 1955 graduate of BJC and the morning after graduation, I graduated into Army service with an immediate trip to Des Moines, followed by a train ride to Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
K-----K
Larry Lindmark, BHS-63, wrote, "I was just looking through old Boone postcards on ebay and happened to come across a Boone ham radio postcard. I remember that was a popular hobby for high school students back in the 60's. Several classmates, such as Ted Gifford, were ham radio enthusiasts. Postcards, with their call letters or numbers, were sent to people with whom they had contact. I wonder how many of your viewers had that interest in their youth or, perhaps, still have maintained that hobby today?
EDITOR'S NOTE: Yes, my first experience with ham radio occurred those many years ago on the north side. I grew up on Crawford Street....1710.....and in the next block south, the Gustafson family was located. Harold was the dad and his sons were Don, BHS-50, and Dean. I believe Harold worked for the Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern railroad and he was a very active ham radio operator. I remember viewing his mammouth equipment and I recall one instance when I was there that he was visiting with someone in some very far-off land. I was very impressed.......I mean this was in the late 1940's.

WE'RE DOOMED??

"Things will never be the same".........and they shouldn't be.
Time passes and yes, things do change. Some for the better and......
I, the Kornerman, assumes you're still not driving that real "old" Chevy or wearing that leisure suit, The outhouse is gone and the hair's not as thick but....
The point is.....yes, we're all disapointed that our Boone Iowa "downtown" is missing those clothing and shoe stores and the JCP's and Sears outlets, drug stores and the Coney Island's BUT have you driven around town lately? All is not lost.
New projects have emerged, some stores have relocated and have you ever seen as much new construction, houses and otherwise, as we saw this Spring/Summer?
And, in this edition, I'm going to tell you about two of the biggest and best "new" opportunities for optimism for our community......one for certain and the other a "maybe."
     (1) Our Des Moines Area Community College Boone Campus is like a "city within a city" and aren't we happy to have it?
This ever expanding asset will be "at it again" in the coming months.
Plans are well underway for a 28,500 square foot "Enhanced Recreation" facility on campus. Plans are for breaking ground in April, 2020, and have the $6 1/2 million project open by the Spring of 2021.
The DMACC Board of Directors is seeking $750,000 in private support but will cover the remainder of the cost.
The facility will provide numerous fitness opportunities, athletic training rooms and indoor practice facilities for sports teams and its hoped that it will draw various youth camps for such activities as basketball and volleyball tournaments. All good for this community, right?
Who would have thunk it? Boone Junior College began in 1927 and after homes on the third floor of Boone High School and as part of an old Franklin elementary building, a final move was made to the current 23 acre plot and inclusion as part of DMACC in September of 1967.
As a result, the Boone community has received an influx of 2,500 students each semester, 45 full-time faculty positions, 25 adjunct positions, 75 other full-time employees and the only one of DMACC's campuses offering eight NJCAA Division II sports programs.
The Kornerman cannot conclude this history without mention of the importance of a strong Boone presence through the years on the nine-member DMACC Board of Directors. At the beginning, late attorney Lloyd Courter, BHS-53, was a board member who exhibited great influence in guiding the board to a Boone destination when it could have, very well, landed elsewhere.
After Courter, the late Dr. Wayne Rouse followed up with several years of "making sure" the Boone campus was well respected and given full backing. In the most recent years, Fred Greiner, a former Boone businessman, has taken the reins to assure that the Boone Campus continues to receive strong and expanding support.
This triumvirate deserves the communities profound "thanks." Without their dedication to this community and Boone Campus, DMACC certainly could have found a much different location.
     (2) The "maybe" is the possibility of a newly constructed $8 million Boone Recreation Center to, somewhat, at least, replace the loss of a long-time Boone resident......the YM and previously YWCA.
Meetings are being held, a committee has been formed and even a possible location on current city property has been discussed.
The committee's conceptual presentation shows a pool with rental space for parties and private events, a kid's wading pool, an exercise/fitness room, a full-sized gymnasium with walking track, a Yoga/aerobics center, a rentable banquet/community space, locker rooms and a small resource room.
Currently, this project is a "dream" but serious study is taking place on a regular basis and its hoped that the new year will provide some clear-cut answers.

The bad news......nothing else to report except.....Ann Anonymous wrote, "I know there are hundreds, if not thousands, of Boonites who read the Korner. I'm absolutely amazed that more readers don't contribute memories of days gone bye. Everyone has a story."
     ??? I don't know......a bad editor maybe.

PRAISE FOR DES MOINES

John Kueck, BHS-61, is a wonderful contributor to the Korner.......always presenting interesting subjects.......things to think about.
I assume its a publication of some kind.......the Midwest Traveler......provided an interesting "outside" look at our capitol city, Des Moines, recently and John filled us in with info from that article.
The banner was, "Des Moines is on the move with an emerging food and drink scene" and the author urges readers to "Go there now."
He/she cited numerous things in the city that deserved attendance.......the Art Center, the farmer's market.....the famous Waveland Cafe among many eating establishments.....etc. etc.
In conclusion, he/she wrote, "Go now while Des Moines still enjoys the charms and convenience of a small town."

What a successful 33 years he had as a member of the Des Moines Police Department. During his career there, he won two Medals of Valor, numerous Certificates of Commendation and WAS THE MOST AWARDED POLICE OFFICER IN THE HISTORY OF THE DES MOINES POLICE DEPARTMENT. Wow!

WE'RE GETTING BETTER

Wife Jo is progressing well after last week's emergency surgery. She got home Monday.
We both thank all of you who, in some way, offered your concern regarding this incident. The phone calls, text messages, emails, prayers, food deliveries etc. etc. were overwhelming and so much appreciated.
Before we know it, hopefully, our lives will be back to "normal."
K-----K
     A little catch-up here.
BHS-53 classmate Margaret Oxenford Kooser wrote about a recent Korner mention of Mrs. Gunn, the piano teacher. "If her husband was Dr. Gunn, they were our neighbors and she was also a teacher for school kids who were home-bound. I was not aware that she taught piano. I don't know if there were any other Gunns in town. He was our family doctor. My sister-in-law's mother, Mrs. McVicker, taught me piano. As for outside games, our front yard was a baseball diamond. Sidewalk to the house was home plate, a big cottonwood tree on the road (old Highway 30) was first base, apple tree on an empty lot was second, a bush by the end of the house was third base. If there was no game going, my mom would grab any of us kids to go out front to play catch. She was pretty good. All of that ground is now covered by Westhaven. When they took our old cottonwood down, it was so big it made the papers, as they had to close highway 30. That happened after we left the area. Weather here in Louisiana is better for me than Iowa's weather. I spent too much time in the SW part of the country to deal with humidity and snow. Have humidity here but a much lower dew point. That has been a key for me."
K-----K
Sources indicate that Jude Rolfes, BHS-64, has had a pair of surgeries lately and they would like to inundate him with lots of "good wishes" for a speedy recovery.
ATTENTION: I'm told that Jude's address is.....15 S. Emory Bend Place, Shenandoah, TX 77381.
K-----K
Here's an idea for you travelers.
A good contributor mentioned that they've seen "the Palace of Versailles, the White House, the Grand Canyon, been to the Vatican and seen the great works of art in Florence, Italy but after a visit to the Greenbrier in White Sulpher Springs, WV in the good old USA we found its a "gorgeous place" and ranks right at the top."
He added, "I talked to a golf starter on hole #1 and he'd been doing that job for 42 years. After asking him for some stories he may relate he said, "I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly and then too, their are the politicians.""

MORE HOMEMADE GAMES

In the last edition, with the help of viewers, we recalled some of the games we "made-up" as teens to fill spare times. These were the days that few young people had cars or various similar "incidentals" It was even before the advent of television. Our time was simply "our time" with no promises of any specific itinerary.
The response we received was great.
Larry "Lefty" Moore, BHS-52, sent a picture of a train setup he has in his California back yard.
Gary Knox, UCHS-58, wrote, "I invented a similar dice game method for baseball, basketball, football and sports car racing. I compiled the team leagues and standings. I made a fictitious map of Iowa, had high school basketball seasons complete with tournament champions....made a scoreboard out of cardboard similar to Jordan's at the time. Even made a trophy out of scrap wood. Made a sports car race track from a scrap piece of plywood I found. I had a complicated way of using dice to decide if the car spun out on corners, depending on the speed set on cardboard speedometers. All I have left are pictures of the race cars I had drawn. Sadly, the rest got thrown away when I entered eighth grade. Playing baseball and basketball for real took over my interest."
Gary followed up with a picture of one of his race cars....the Wayland Warrior. He wrote, "during the summer, I played the games outside in our farmyard when not doing chores. My dad put a basketball on the corn crib, found an old baseball bat in the barn, used an old baseball wrapped with black electrician tape, an oil can football, and my red Hawthorne bike served as my race car. I sometimes talked my younger sister into being my opponent for my games. I had no brothers to play with. Movietone newsreels at the Rialto and watching Jordan High School games sparked all my imaginary games."
Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, co-inventor of a miniature, backyard golf course with Dick Musser, BHS-64, wrote, "my youngest son and another guy came up with a wonderful idea a few years ago. They invented a way to save beer from lines that had to be drained nightly. Think about it. At every sports venue, the beer lines have to be drained and some of these lines are many feet long. That's a lot of beer to lose. Even in bars across the country, the lines need to be drained at night. I don't know what happened with his idea. I told him I'd cover the cost of the patent. I'll have to ask him next time we get together."
Mike added, "life was so good before TV dominated our lives. Remember when we got one baseball game a week with Dizzy Dean and Buddy Blattner doing the announcing? Great times."
P.S. Loehrer liked the Kornerman's napkin idea. "You could have made millions. Of course, the patent fee is something like $20K."
K-----K
We received another addition  to our list of Boone piano teachers.
John Kueck, BHS-61, wrote, "Mrs. Wall (Wahl?), who lived in the north part of town, was my piano teacher from K-6th grade. I was not the best student since I preferred sports and the outdoors versus being stuck inside practicing piano. My mother played the piano by ear and always wanted to take lessons as a girl but had no piano. She did experiment on a church piano and learned to play by ear which always amazed me. I'm sure she wanted me to take lessons so she could have a piano. In sixth grade, Mrs. Wall told my mother she'd taught me all she could and I needed to move to a more advanced teacher. That was my out from further lessons."
The Kornerman says, "I think it was Wahl and, from my north side days, I remember George Wahl, BHS-51, probably a son of the piano teacher."

BIG IDEAS

How many of you viewers, in your lifetime, thought you had a special idea that might net you a good return BUT.........failed to act, due to various factors.....lack of funding......lack of time......lack of the proper determination etc. etc.?
As it turned out, most of us never "followed through enough" to become a Henry Ford or Colonel Sanders or Sam Walton or Richard and Maurice McDonald, who founded their first restaurant in 1940. By the way, our new McDonald's in Boone Iowa is beautiful.......a wonderful addition to our community.
O.K., to the point.........and, on a much smaller scale than those successes just mentioned. However,  remember, they all started on a  small scale as well.
Anyway, Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, wrote, "I wonder if kids do anything like this anymore or maybe its because Dick Musser, BHS-64, and I were a "little weird."
He explained, "the summer after our sophomore year, when we were 16, Dick and I came up with a money making idea. Why not have a golf tournament of our own? So, we came up with the idea of the LoMuss Open. We set up a nine-hole course in Dick's back yard using soup cans as hole liners. On some of the shots, the players had to bank off the garage next door. In other words, we came up with an early miniature golf course. Entry fee was $1. We bought soda bottles from the local bottling company for 10 cents and sold them for 15 cents. We gave out first, second and third place prize money and yes, we made a profit."
Mike said he was thinking of good memories of his time growing up in Boone and that came to mind. "I doubt kids do these sort of ventures in this age. That's too bad," he concluded.
     Now, wait just a minute.......
To add to Mike's story. I, the Kornerman, know that I've mentioned this before in this very blog.
When I was a teen......and remember, in the days we're talking about, we didn't have cars, we didn't have I-pads and all that current corruption. Life was much simpler and we had to make our own fun to fill a lot of spare time.
When I was a teen, I played a baseball game on my desk using dice for hour after hour.
I rolled the three dice and if the numbers 3 or 18 came up, I had launched a home run. If I recall correctly, 5 was a triple, 8 was a flyout, 10 was a strikeout etc. etc. and for some of the numbers, a run batted in was added if there was someone already on base.
I kept a scorecard and announced the action as it occurred, batter by batter. And, I had a complete eight-team league made up of fictitious towns.........Benkelman Braves, the Moville Mud Hens and each featured a roster of fictitious players........Dee Moyne, Marti Graw, Ben Down, Benito Gracias, Stewart (Stu) Pover and others.
I played game after game after game.......and kept league standings and even kept individual stats on each player......their at bats, their hits, their homers, their RBI's, pitchers strikeouts, earned runs etc. etc.
AND, at the end of the season, after the regular season and playoffs, I made up a league summary book. It had advertisements, all the various stats that I had kept during the year on a page devoted to each team. Players autographs were even included.
Guess what? I still have all that in my archives........and it will, no doubt, follow me to my final days.
Yup! I guess I was one of those "weird guys" too.
P.S. Another "crazy" idea I never followed up on. When I eat in a restaurant, I bet I'm not the only person that's ever had trouble keeping that darn cloth napkin on my lap. It consistently finds the floor.
Why hasn't someone decided those cloth napkins need a small strip of velcro or some other such substance attached.......just enough to pin the napkin to the customers apparel?

Brian "Mike" Claussen, 59, of Boone was operating a motorcycle north of Boone in the Ridgeport area September 17 when a deer darted in front of him. Brian was seriously injured, taken to a Des Moines hospital and passed away.
When that occurred, we mentioned it in the Korner but with very few details.
Brian's sister, Pam Claussen of Marshalltown, has provided more information. She wrote, "My brother Mike always loved his music. Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Stevie Ray Vaughn. He enjoyed R & B. CD's would litter his living room floor. His second love was his motorcycles. His 1980 Low-rider Shovelhead, he worked tirelessly on. He was in construction most of his life: concrete, roofing, drywall, and finally, finish carpenter. He paid attention to detail. Didn't want his name on sloppy work. He has one son, who is an electrician/foreman in Colorado. Mike was very proud of him."

I FORGOT MRS.GUNN

Last edition we mentioned some piano teachers we remembered but we knew there were more.
JonWilson, BHS-62, wrote, "Mrs. Gunn taught piano in the basement of the church across from the library. I have forgotten the church name....maybe Central Christian Church? My mother wanted me to play the piano but I have NO aptitude for it. All I remember was her striking her cane on the floor to try and teach me tempo or something. All it did was make me nervous. All I can play is the radio."
The Kornerman says, "the Presbyterian Church is across from the Library. The Central Christian is a block north of that."
In the same edition the Kornerman remembered Wally Pratt, BHS-55, as a fine organist.
To that, Loren Frazier, BHS-58, replied, "As you indicated, Wally Pratt did play piano at a restaurant in  the Okoboji area. I  don't know how long he worked there but I do know that he worked at Red's restaurant in Arnolds Park during the summer of 1958 as I also worked at Arnolds Park that summer, at Fillenwarth Beach Resort. In fact, Wally and I both "boarded" at a ladies home in Arnolds Park that summer. I got a bed, on a small, enclosed front porch, and breakfast for $7.00 a week. That was quite a bargain as I made the grand amount of $1.00 an hour, working a 44 hour week at the resort. My 1958 classmate and current Boone historian, Ed Mondt, also worked at Reds that summer."
K-----K
Curtis Dale Cox, BHS-63, says, "vaping back in my day was.........Vicks VapoRub."
K-----K
The Kornerman received a letter all the way from California......Riverside to be exact.
Max Moore, BHS-46, enclosed a clipping from the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
There was one huge picture and two smaller ones contained in a very nice story titled, "Still planting seeds, 119 years later" and a sub-head, "Iowans in Long Beach seek out other transplants to keep annual picnic going."
The Kornerman says, "many times in the Korner we've written about the Boone celebration in California and the annual Iowa celebration in California."
The story Max sent has a big picture of a gentleman taking a picture of a friend beside a replica of "American Gothic" on the main deck of the battleship Iowa where the Iowa celebration took place. The smaller pictures were of a lady singing the "Iowa Corn Song" with a group and a former Iowa resident pointing out his Hawkeye state hometown on a map.
That latest Iowa celebration in California took place August 17.
Despite the fact the celebration, which attracted tens of thousands every year through the first half of the 20th century, has struggled to draw crowds the last 35 years it has continued. There were just over 150 attendees this year and one lady helping boil corn on the cob commented, "there's too many of us here to let it just disappear. It'll go on forever."
The five-hour event featured a blues band and barbecue luncheon and "lots of visiting about "back home.""
One attendee said, "I had no idea why so many drivers kept blasting their horn at me when I first visited Long Beach in 1968. I finally figured it out. Those honkers were fellow Iowans who noticed the Hawkeye State license plate on my Volkswagen Bug."
So many Iowans located in the Long Beach area over the years that eventually it was called,"Iowa by the Sea."

LOCAL MUSICAL TALENT AND TEACHERS

Those of us who have been around long enough knew that Stephen Hamilton was a real talent, as an organist.
The News Republican had a nice story about him and his work in a recent edition.
Stephen, now Dr. Stephen, BHS-66, was one of three sons, Bob, BHS-57, and Dick, BHS-58, of the late Mr and Mrs. Bill Hamilton, who owned and operated Hamilton Hardware in Boone for many years. Didn't that family move to Boone from Jefferson?
Anyway, Stephen is concert organist, Minister of Music Emeritus at The Church of the Holy Trinity (Episcopal) in New York City and is in London right now to perform a second recital in historic Westminster Abbey tommorrow, Sunday, October 6.
Hamilton began piano studies, under Mildred Achenbach, while in the second grade and then, as a fourth grader, began organ lessons with Russell Saunders at Drake University in Des Moines.
He played his first church service on Christmas Eve at Grace Episcopal Church in Boone and during his high school years, he served as organist at the First United Methodist Church here.
A Doctor of Music Arts degree in organ performance was earned at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
Stephen's impressive resume is much too long to detail here but I, the Kornerman, assure you that he has performed at numerous prestigious venues, perhaps as many in Europe as in this country, and his upcoming schedule includes concerts at Oxford University in England, Phoenix, AZ and New York City.
In addition to his position at the Church of Holy Trinity in New York City, Hamilton was University Organist at Columbia University for 15 years and taught at Manhattan School of Music and Hunter College.
When he's not traveling, he calls Minneapolis his home base.
K-----K
The story about Stephen Hamilton and his music has the Kornerman thinking in that same vein.
Wally Pratt, BHS-55, was a well known local organist......right? Seems to me he was a featured performer up north, like in the Okoboji area?
Then, back further, I remember a "Buzz" Meyer who used to tickle the ivory in the hallway at Boone High School. I guess his real name was Grant Meyer, BHS-48.
Mention of Mrs. Achenbach, one of Stephen's early teachers, reminds me of one of her two daughters, classmate, Roma Achenbach, BHS-53.
There used to be many piano teachers in town. I believe my late aunt Pat Morris gave piano lessons in the Betty Mae Harris days.
     Who were some others?
K-----K
All of Iowa is reeling from the loss of Rev. Allen Henderson of Fort Dodge, who was brutally attacked and died near his Fort Dodge St. Paul's Lutheran church/school Wednesday. Thankfully, the suspect in this tragedy was quickly apprehended.
Rev. Henderson, 64, is survived by his wife, Kristine, a son, two daughters, two sisters and his mother-in-law.
He served St. Paul's Lutheran Church, northeast of Boone, for a time until 1999 when he moved to his Fort Dodge position.
Services are at his "home" church in Fort Dodge today (Saturday) with burial in the Boone St. Paul Cemetery.

Formerly of the Ogden area......Richard Prim, 60, Stratford. Survivors include siblings, Nicholas and Barbara Prim of Boone and Paul and William Prim of Stratford.......Josephine Selzer Scott, 82. Grew up in the Ames area but her family moved to Boone  in her early years. BSH-55. Married John Scott. They had three boys and two girls, who survive. A brother and sister also survive. HE'S THE SAME OLD FRED

Early Tuesday morning our coffee group was starting to gather when a tall gentleman, accompanied by a lady and wearing boots and jeans and a large "cowboy" hat walked in.
     Somebody said, "who's that.......Wyatt Earp?"
Actually, it was old KWBG friend and co-worker Freddie Lark who, in passing, made some remark about our group having a Board of Directors meeting.
Still, it didn't register until he actually came over to visit. He took the huge hat off and that made him more recognizable. He might be a few pounds lighter than I remember but, once the light came on, it was the same old Fred.
The couple was back "home" from Montana for a wedding and he remarked that, "yes, I just got out in time to avoid the snow there."
Fred has been highly successful. He has several businesses with a main one being longtime ownership of KXLO country radio in Lewistown, MT. When questioned he said, "ya, we're still making a few bucks via radio but its not easy."
He is an Iowa State grad and still has a close connection with the university which does bring him back to the area at different times for board meetings.
I believe, somewhere in my archives, I still have a recording of "St Louis Blues" sung by Freddie Lark and, truthfully, I have always felt it had star quality. He says its been distributed worldwide via You Tube as well as other outlets.
An Ogden High School grad, you might remember when Lark's ranch was a part of the Des Moines River valley west of Boone. He still has relatives in this area.
K-----K
     Its all in the family.
Michael Olson, BHS-86, son of Bob and LeAnn Olson of Boone, is a new 2019 inductee, in the Iowa Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame. Thus, he joins two uncles, Gene and Dean Olson, as members of that elite group.
Mike, who lives in Ogden, began his fast-pitch career in 1986 and has played on numerous outstanding Iowa teams........from Ames, Des Moines, Moravia and Sioux City, as well as teams from surrounding states.......Minnesota, Topeka, KS and Midland, MI. Included were several national and even world competitions.
As a member of Van's of Moravia, a state champion runnerup, Mike was named to the All-Tournament team and the tourney's Most Valuable Player.
Playing for Gateway 2000 Soo's of Sioux City, he was a member of two state championship teams that finished third and sixth, respectively, in the world tournament. In both 1993 and 1994 he was named to the All Tournament team in a Pioneer Days tournament in Salt Lake City, UT.

In 1999 they moved to town and in 2011, Clavonne sold her house and moved in with her daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law, Bob Jones. The Kadings had six children. Three of them, Christine Kading, Mike Kading and Carrie Noll, live in Boone. A brother also survives..........Doyle Davisson, 69, Ogden. Grew up in Perry. Perry HS. SOME WONDERFUL HONORS

I goofed in the last edition. Roger Dutton should have been BHS-63, rather than BHS-53.
K-----K
Its always gratifying when we can report GOOD NEWS.
We have a couple nice stories, in that vein, to report in this edition.
Our former neighbor on Aldrich Street, 94-year old Arnie Ahrens, recently received a long overdue honor for his service to our country many years ago in World War II.
As an Army veteran, who served in the midst of that conflict, he qualified for a Purple Heart, in addition to a Bronze Star, which he had never received.
Gary Ahrens, Arnie's godson and a son of Arnie's close friend, Ray Ahrens, stepped forward to do what government paperwork was needed for Arnie to receive his Star.
Both Arnie and Ray, who had worked together as civilians "back home," were infantry men during the war. In fact, Ray was captured by the Germans in Winterspelt, Germany and Arnie was wounded in action and hospitalized for a time.
On Thursday, September 12, at the Boone Veterans of Foreign Wars lodge, VFW Commander Mike Metcalf presented the Bronze Star to Arnie. Dick Thul, representing the local American Legion as Commander, did much of the logistical work required to finalize the local ceremony, which also featured presentation of  a beautiful "Quilt of Honor," which an Ogden organization has presented to many qualified area veterans.
Arnie served in three different campaigns in Europe and returned to the front after his wounding and hospitalization.
K-----K
Then there is LuVerne Anderson, BHS-54, who was recently cited for his lifetime of devotion to aviation.
In August, LaVerne received a letter from the U.S. Department of Transportation informing him that he is a recipient of the Wright Brothers "Master Pilot Award" in recognition of his fifty years of aeronautical experience as an aviator.
The award was initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration in honor of the first pioneers of flight, Wilbur and Orville Wright. In doing so, honorees were recognized for their contribution and maintenance of  safe flight operations for fifty or more years.
Larry Arenholz, Manager, Des Moines Flight Standards District Office, made the presentation, acknowleging LuVerne's exemplary service, professionalism, devotion to aviation safety, recognition by his peers and the appreciation of countless pilots to whom he has "showed the way."
     LuVerne received several recognition certificates.
A few years ago, he completed a lifelong dream by constructing his own personal airplane. For many years, Boone residents will recall his work at Boyds Dairy as a maker of their famous ice cream.
K-----K
In case you hadn't heard, the new McDonald's opening has been postponed for one week. Rainy weather has hampered work at the facility, which was originally scheduled to open Thursday, Ocober 3. That grand opening has been rescheduled for one week later.

BASEBALL SUCCESS IN THE 60'S

LuVerne Anderson, BHS-54, the Boyd's ice cream maker from many years ago, has had a lifetime love affair with aviation and, in fact, is one of those individuals who successfully built his own  plane.
He's won a nice honor and in the next edition, we'll go into more detail about it.
     But that's not all.
Our former neighbor, 94-year old Arnie Ahrens, has been honored for his military service in World War II. Honored? Ha! Super honored. He's received a Bronze Star to go along with his Purple Heart.
More about that coming up also.
K-----K
A real ex-Toreador threesome got together at the Kornerman's house the other day. There were some class reunions last week and that's what drew two of the outsider's, Dutton and Peterson, to town.
Anyway, for 90 minutes or so, lots of "way back"stories were told by Roger Dutton, BHS-53, Tom Peterson and Kelly McMullan, BHS-67. Of course, the old host had to interject a few memories as well.
Baseball stories were pretty dominant in the conversation and why not? Solid Little League and Babe Ruth programs provided the impetus for the development of numerous young athletes into outstanding baseball players in Boone Iowa in the  1960's. In fact, without question, during that period of time under the coaching of Hall of Famer Bill Sapp, Boone could, rightfully, be tabbed the top youth baseball town in Iowa.
Two state high school championships, 1965 and 1967, in a three year period plus numerous other outstanding BHS teams, as well as LL and Ruth all-star successes were verification of that. How about a little "frosting on the cake." In the 70's, there were also state tourney appearances in 1970, 71 and 72, including a third place finish in 72.
The visiting threesome, all players for coach Sapp, couldn't project enough superlatives in describing their former mentor and his way of teaching the game.
One of the more interesting stories regarded, of all things, pre-game infield drills. One of the three commented, "coach always aimed for a snappy, sharp infield workout.........quick and accurate, machine-like throws......... just before game time. Coach always said, "our opponents will be watching and if we show sharpness and confidence, its a big early advantage for us."
One of the guys commented that he had actually been in the company of an ex-Ames High player of that era who admitted, "we always looked forward to simply watching, in awe, you guys infield workout before the game itself. It was very impressive."
K-----K
Can't tell you the year but Mark Campbell, BHS-67, a former KWBG employee himself, sent a picture of an ad the radio station posted in an edition of the Boone News Republican. It showed that current roster of the station.
Dick Johnson was the station manager. The other employees pictured were Floyd Killian, Bob  Corcoran, D. Arthur Dennis (Borwick), Gary Price, Jerry Sheeder and the office ladies, Pauline Bowman and Betty Callery.
K-----K

THANK HEAVENS, WE'RE HOME

Yes, we have returned after a short trip out west.
It was a wonderful trip that went very well in every respect. Weather was great, the food was very good and the airplanes were on time.
One question remains in  my mind........why would anyone want to live there? Despite any problems, and there are various problems, big ones and small ones, I'm thankful I found or it found me, little old Boone, Iowa. What a great life we have here.

The Moore boys, Max, BHS-46, and Larry, BHS-52, live in California and Max referred, via email, to a recent  Korner edition, "great article on music. I do the same. So many good artists. Especially "Precious Memories" by the Gaithers. We have had two weeks over 100 degrees. Wanting fall and football. Go Cyclones, Hawkeyes and Toreadors. Talk with Red Houser, BHS-49, every now and then. In good health."

Thanks to Dale Cox, BHS-63, for the recorded song he sent and Tom Peterson, BHS-67, for a video copy of a terrific graduation speech given by Lou Holtz, the former Notre Dame football coach. He is an inspiring guy........so good. I read, somewhere, the other day, that he had given a similar speech on a college campus and it was determined to be so good, they invited him back for an encore the next year or so.

I, the Kornerman, noted in a recent Register story, there was an opinion list of the "100 greatest Iowa college football players."
I was disappointed the great ex-Toreador, Mike Enich, BHS-37, was not on the list but was very happy that Chad Rinehart, BHS-2003, was included.
Enich was an All American lineman and played on some great teams at the University of Iowa with the legendary Nile Kinnick.

Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, has a nice photo of the 1958 Boone Little League all-star team that was coached by Jack Bass and Jack Mustapha Sr.
Members of that team were Marv Nicholson, Larry Lindmark, Marty Rinehart, Don Riker, Al Neely, Brett Downey, Greg Davis, John Diehl, Jack Mustapha Jr., Terry Sparks, John Hendricks, Tom Inman, Pat Ahlstrom, Ted Gifford, Dick Musser and a Dawson boy.
Mike wrote, "if anyone would like a print of the photo, I'd be happy to run them off and send them out to them. My email is mjloehrer@hotmail.com."
