HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY

Barbara Mathis Gohman, BHS-67, wrote, "Steve Mathis, BHS-64, has been a ham radio guy for many years. He is also a private pilot living in Montrose, CO. My brother credits much of his interest in electronics to one of his favorite teachers, H.L. Cunningham."
Editors Note: Oh yes, H.L.......a favorite along with Hal Lyness and others. Really, if you viewers were to name a Top Five BHS instructors in your time, who would be included? Interesting thought.

Back to more ham radio talk from info received from Chuck Brainard, BHS-50, aka Chazz Bee. As we mentioned in an earlier Korner, Chuck mentioned talking to Barry Goldwater, Arthur Godfrey and King Hussein of Jordan via ham radio. He also indicated that Tim "the Toolman" Allen and Donny Osmond are also ham operators. He wrote, "probably my most interesting contact, ever, was with a Scottish engineer, Scottie Benbrackie, who was part of the team that placed the very first satellite into Geo-stationary orbit, this one was directly over the North Pole. That was a very long time ago. Those things litter the sky now."
Chuck added, "I was in Somalia for a bit in early 1993 installing my equipment for the UN/Pakistan Army and operated from there as TSCB. I don't plan to return, once was enough. Upon my return from there, I was talking with a ham in Tanzania and he knew a relief agency couple that I met on the UN flight out of Nairobi, Kenya to Mogadishu in Somalia. Small world. My agent in Pakistan, Tariq Janjua (SK) was AP2TJ. While in Mogadishu, and billeted at the airport there, I saw lots of interesting airplanes and since I'm a pilot, I paid attention. One was the largest aircraft in the world, the Russian Illushyan. That thing is huge. Our ride back to Nairobi was in a UN Cessna Citation biz jet that would easily fit inside the Russian bird. At night in Mogadishu, as aircraft took off, they would go totally dark, immediately, on lift off. Snipers. The local people were happy as could be that relief was there. They would applaud us as we, sometimes, drove by. The ruling War Lords, not so much?"
Chuck mentioned, "I have confirmed contacts from 354 different countries. Some have dropped by the wayside, East Germany for instance. Again, ham radio is a great hobby, for all ages."
