Clearing the Desk

Regarding recent talk of the ice skating ponds, old and new, Vern Modeland, BHS-50, reminds us that, "you're just remembering the shoveled part of the old rink. Appropriately motivated, some of us older folk could skate it all the way back to the cemetery..........in the dark."
K-----K
It was great to hear from John Burke this week. Several Boone native John Burke's come to mind. This one was the John Burke who was a teacher and coached the BHS sophomore football team in 1973, 1974 and 1976 and then became the head Toreador football coach in 1977 before a move to Colorado. He coached the varsity boys here just that one year.
In Colorado he was outstanding. In fact, I'm sure he coached at least one state championship team there.
John was looking for Bernie Saggau's current address which I was able to deliver.  Bernie, of course, was my boss at the IHSAA for 30 years and is spending the Iowa winter in Sun City, AZ. He's 88 and still enjoys his golf games. He returns to the Iowa Great Lakes each summer.
John Burke and his wife, Shelly, are both retired. The couple have two daughters, both married and both involved in education. The eldest daughter, Stephanie, was born in Boone.

There's been some talk in recent editions of high school age athletes being required to pay fees to participate in local sports programs. We have a couple of reports on that.
In Minnesota, one of our Korner viewers said their grandson, who swims for the varsity team at a large high school, forks over a $210 annual fee to the school plus another $135 to the booster club.
In Ohio, its not unusual for high school baseball players to pay $170 to participate but, unlike Iowa, they play their baseball in the spring and some of their games are played IN Florida.
K-----K
Finally, we had been involved in talk about old phone numbers recently and a viewer wrote, "I remember when KWBG had a contest called, "Quiz Biz." Of course, you'd know. You might have been the guy who asked the questions. Did the winner get a free pass to the Rialto? I remember the operator coming on and we'd yell 1590. I could tell how exasperated she became after being bombarded with so many calls in  a five-minute period."
Oh yes, the Kornerman was much involved in that production so many years ago. I can't remember the exact prize awarded but it was a fun time trying to stump the callers.

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Patricia Schroeder, 87, Boone. BHS-47. Boone area survivors include her husband, Jim, and a sister, Delores Hein, both of Boone..........Marillyn Hansen, 85, Boone. Boone area survivor is a daughter, Sandy Buss, of Boone..........Doris Eschliman, 88, Boone. Was an Avon representative. Worked with her husband in Eschliman Engineering. Boone area survivors include her husband, Dale, and a granddaughter, Mystique Maines both of Boone..........Patricia Triska, 85, Boone. She and her husband, Bill, operated the Evangelical Camp and Conference Center for several years. She graduated from nursing school and was a deacon in the Episcopal church. Boone area survivor is a daughter, Julie Eppert, of rural Madrid.........Gary Kingham, 70, Ogden.........Jean Fank, 76, Waterloo. Boone area survivor is a son, Michael, of Boone.........Ted Grabau, 89, Grand Island, NE, formerly of Boone. BHS-44. Born on a Boone County farm. Was a farmer and construction worker.

Its a Fact

Oh, my gosh! That facebook rumor we mentioned briefly in the last edition is no joke. A Boone Elks club and the old, abandoned Boone News Republican building on Keeler Street are both, "alive."
It was no secret that a local group has been  attempting to get a Boone Elks Club "back in business." At one time, there was a Boone Elks Club and, I remember, it was very active. But, through the years, interest apparently faded and so did the club, which was orginally founded in 1900.
A meeting has been set for January 29 at 2 p.m. at the Boone County Historical Center building to discuss the possibility of reinvigorating the local club. Those with any interest are urged to attend.
Meantime, a confident local group, the Boone Elks Committee, has purchased the old BNR building as a potential site for the club. The building has been unoccupied since the BNR moved out in 2004.
The Kornerman, of course, was a daily occupant of that building from 1958-70 and even a few years later, 2000-04 while an employee of the BNR. Lots of memories there.
K-----K
Karen wrote, "I was surprised there were no responses regarding your mention of Dale Oliver. I wasn't raised in Boone and you didn't say he was from Boone.......only that you "put him on the air," each Sunday morning. I searched him on Google and came up with nothing. On, "Find a Grave," I did find a Rev. Dale E. Oliver, who passed away in 1994 in Keokuk. I also found a Rev. Dale Oliver on "Mormon Family Search, 1940 census. Do you think this is "your man?"
The Kornerman says, "It sounds to me like this may be the man I had in mind. I believe he was the Evangelical Free Church minister at the time when it was located southwest, across from the high school."

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Barbara Laub Snedden, 90, Des Moines. Born in Boone. BHS-45. Was a geneaologist...........Patricia Triska, 85, Boone.

I Was There Every Sunday Morn

In our last meeting, the Kornerman mentioned that while watching a television program he had been awakened to a good memory of the 1960's. We also mentioned the name of Dale Oliver, wondering if that would ring any viewer's bell. Alas, it didn't.
The program I was watching was Bill Anderson's Country Family Reunion. Its on RFD-TV on Friday nights at 7 p.m. and features some of the true (older) country stars. Its not always gospel but it was on this night.
The Kornerman told Jo, "when I was in my 20's, I was a very faithful Evangelical Free church attender.......never missed a Sunday morning and I especially enjoyed Rev. Dale Oliver. I thought he was outstanding.......always with a great message." She looked at me somewhat skeptically, so then I explained, "I was working the Sunday morning shift at KWBG and was the guy that pushed all the right buttons etc. to put Rev. Oliver and the E Free service on the air each week."
K-----K
Here's another question and I hope for a better response to this one. A viewer wrote that it cost young athletes who participate in a high school sport in his state, $500, just to register for that opportunity. That's not a state fee, its a local one. I was surprised.  Is that true in Iowa........in Boone, Iowa these days....... that there's a registration fee for participation?
The Kornerman remembers in the earliest days of Little League when a suggestion of a fee for playing was strenuously objected to by me and others. In those years, we were by no means fancy but we were able to have, with the help of some sponsors, a very successful program with no fee charged for participating. I've continued to feel that way through the years. Obviously, as more and more frills, more uniforms etc., were added, more income was needed. But why not just less frills was always my feeling. I thought the kids played pretty well in sponsor t-shirts and they seemed to have lots of fun and.........it didn't cost the parents a bit.
K-----K
What's this.......a facebook rumor?........the Elks, trying for a comeback here, has purchased the old Boone News building? Just a very unsubstantiated rumor!!
K-----K
John Kueck, BHS-61, spent many youthful days at the old Herman Park skating rink. He took an image of the new rink and asked, "is it smaller compared to the one we had in our day?" The new one is 100 x 200 which, yes, is much smaller than the one used way back in the 50's-60's..........probably equal to the one used in more recent years.
K-----K
BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Cindy Clark, 53, Boone. Boone area survivors include her husband, Jon, her children, Kyle and Samantha Clark both of Boone, siblings Gary and David Russell both of Boone, mother-in-law Janice Clark and brothers-in-law Dave, Scott and Kendall Clark all of Boone.........Larry Thomas, 81, Johnston, formerly of the Boone/Pilot Mound area. Pilot Mound HS-55. Worked 30 years for the Union Pacific.

After All These Years........

It appears there is quite a shakeup underway in the Boone funeral home community.
Stark Welin Funeral Home at 609 Seventh Street, and, also with a Stratford satellite, was first established at the Boone site in 1888 and has been operated by the Welin and Stark families and Bruce Conlin through the years.  Harry Schroeder began the Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth and Story in 1932 and, it was purchased in recent years by Aaron Schroeder of Jefferson. Since 1986, Larry Schroeder has offered Schroeder Memorial Chapel at 1006 Sixth Street.
As far as the Kornerman knows, there have been no official announcements, however, there are indications that all three services are undergoing operational changes.
The Kornerman first noticed that on the Schroeder Memorial website, the name Reimers has been appearing alongside that of Larry Schroeder. Joseph Reimers and  Larry Schroeder are listed as Funeral Directors and a name change to Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel appears to be underway.
Meantime, there are indications that Stark Welin and the Schroeder Funeral Home on Story are combining forces. Aaron Schroeder is listed as the Funeral Director/Owner of the combination and on the Stark Welin website, the history and staff links are "being revised."
K-----K
Hip hip horray's to the Boone Park Board. They have officially designated the brand new ice skating rink, at its new location, the John Hansen Memorial Ice Skating Rink.
For years, the skating rink was located on the north side of Park Avenue at the bottom of the big hill. The new rink is located in the Gutteridge Equestrian area on the south side of Park Avenue up the hill from the old rink. Both are/were located in Herman Park.
In recent years, the old rink became inoperable much of the time due to environmental issues and despite the fact that the late John Hansen personally worked hour after hour after hour, both as a member of the Park Board, and, in other times, simply as a proud Boone citizen, in an attempt to keep that rink viable. He would be so proud of the new facility which may or may not have ever occurred if it wasn't for his steadfast support of this great entertainment facility for area residents.
K-----K
Perhaps in a few days.......or not, like next Thursday, BNR readers will read more details about these "breaking stories" of interest which our weekly newspaper hasn't covered to date. The Korner strikes again, first and foremost.
K-----K
While watching TV the Kornerman was hit by a memory that goes back to the 60's. Let's just ask, "who out there remembers Dale Oliver?" More details in the next edition.
K-----K
Bits and Pieces: (1) Maybe the idea we presented, in jest, isn't so crazy after all. We suggested maybe the old Redeker building could house a kids entertainment center with bumper cars, various games and maybe a bowling lane or two. John Kueck, BHS-61, wrote that,"a wave of arcades is sweeping Minneapolis." He's wondering if, "this new restaurant/entertainment is for the millennials?"
(2) The recent SBS Tour of Golf Champions was held in Maui and Larry Kelley, BHS-64, had a front row seat. Always the showman, Larry pointed out that he could be seen on the telecast of the tourney. He wrote, "Russell Knox on hole number three found his ball in some weeds. I was helping him find his ball. I had a purple t-shirt on and a white visor with tan shorts." The Kornerman is sorry I missed it.

Born in Boone. Housewife. Boone area survivors include her sons, John and Joe of Boone, and Jeff of Ames and daughter, Anne Bushore, of Madrid. Also surviving are two sisters, Maurine Morris and Marjorie McNeil both of Boone.

Win Some, Lose Some

Well, I guess our speculation was wrong. The Kornerman had a feeling something might be happening at the old Redeker's facility.......highlighted by the fact that, for a time, anyway, the huge "For Sale" sign, that had been so obvious for so long in front of that building, had finally disappeared. However, I'm told the sign has now reappeared. So maybe something that might have been cooking has cooled off.
STREET TALK: We do understand that the Top and Body shop has been sold to an "insider" and we also hear the possibility of a strip mall being built at the site of what, at one time, was Gillespie Motors and then, later, S and H Motors on South Marshall.
K-----K
The Kornerman found this interesting. Gary Knox wrote, "I had mentioned once my dad, Alvah Knox, telling me he played guard on the Boone Junior College football team. He never mentioned he had also played basketball there. He was in the first BJC graduating class (1928-29). He was a 5-6 and about 175 pound "strong man" and joked that opponents ran over the top of him when he played football. Being from Luther HS, he had never played football, just baseball and basketball. I guess I inherited his math ability. I graduated with a BS in math from Iowa State and an MS in math from Northwestern University."
A few comments about Gary's email. (1) He sent photos of his dad's BJC teams that show they had about 14 football squad members and 10 basketball players. (2) Regarding those math skills, in Alvah's graduation comments it says, "when we get stuck with Physics or Math problems, we run down to the lunch room from second period and let Alvah help us out. (3) the Kornerman is a BJC graduate, 1955, having taken all those courses on the third floor of the "old" BHS building. That was way before the more "modern" facilities of Franklin Hall, at the site of the old Franklin elementary at 12th and Carroll, or today's beautiful DMACC facilities in south Boone. And yes, I played basketball on a non-successful Bears team during my two years with no knowledge, whatsoever, that the school had, at one time, provided a football program. (4) For some reason, at various times, when in the company of DMACC athletic department employees, members of our coffee group would, teasingly, come up with the question, "why don't you guys have a football program.?" It always seemed to be met with some disdain. DMACC does have lots of athletic programs now for both genders but a football program these days is expensive with special recruiting and staff needs, equipment etc. etc. I suppose that's why there are very few Iowa community colleges that do have football programs. (5) In looking at Jerry Manriquez terrific website and its BJC yearbooks, it appears that football was part of  the BJC program just that one year. The Bears had a 1-3 record.
K-----K
Speaking of DMACC, the Kornerman heard from Dave Dunkelberger this week. He was replying to me after I had sent him condolences on the recent passing of his dad, Harold. Big Dave was a standout basketball player for the DMACC Bears during his time there. He still works for Wells Fargo, but now lives in Ames.
K-----K
Apparently Jon Wilson, BHS-62, saw that the Kornerman had listed him as a viewer we hadn't heard from for some time. He responded this week, "I wish I had your talent for telling a story. I saw the note about some of us readers. I thought I'd give it another try. I got a new cell phone the other day and started thinking about our old phone service in Boone. The letter at the end of our number meant it was a party line...749-j. Sometimes, we would pick up the phone and hear the Browns who lived across the alley. Their number was 749-w. You would hang up, wait a while and then, try again. The telephone was provided by the company and when you picked it up, the operator would say, "number please?" One day, I was calling my mother at my aunt's house. The operator knew my mother and my aunt were at my grandmother's house. She connected me right up."
Jon added, "later,we got a rotary dial telephone. You dialed the number yourself and didn't have to talk to an operator. That is, unless you were making a long distance call. The rotary dial was mechanical and they would never break. In a few years, they changed to touch tone phones. You still dialed yourself and the phone company owned the phone. They were just as reliable but faster to use. These new phones had a transistor in them to do the tone dialing. Just one transistor.  I own my new cell phone and if I ever drop it or it breaks, I have to fix it. It has at least 10,000 transisters and no wires. I have to charge the battery every day or it doesn't work. It is full of "apps," it has a calendar, a clock and it plays music. It even has maps. It has a camera and can store pictures. It has games that I don't know how to play and "apps" from companies I do not know. It even has a flashlight. The other day, I needed to make a phone call. The little green phone was the last thing on the third page of the "apps." The days when we were 749-j were not really so bad. Do you remember your old Boone number?"
     The Kornerman replies, "no."

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Arvilla Nunley. Burial near Stratford..........Lillian Allison, 90, Boone. Was married to husband, Orville, in Boone. Worked at Hawkeye Laundry, Green Giant in Ames and was a volunteer for RSVP, the Scenic Valley Railroad and operated the information booth on South Story for the Boone Chamber. Retired in 1991..........Jim Bustad, 72, Stratford. Formerly of Boone. Worked for 30 years for the city of Boone, retiring in 2008 as Public Works Director. Boone area survivors are his daughter, Jennifer Frank of Stratford, his mother, Bernice, and brother, John, both of Woodward, and his special friend, Dodie Flockhart of Stratford.........Lonnie Nichols, 52, Boone. Attended Grand Community schools. Was a Peace Corps volunteer for three years in Belize and was employed by Webster County at the time of his death. Boone area survivors include his wife, Digna, daughter, Zana, and son, Arlo, as well as his sister Jackie Moore all of Boone.

He's Alive but Heading South

The Kornerman heard from another of our "lost" viewers this week..........one we hadn't heard from for quite some time. Good old Holden Stradlater wrote, "I've stayed true to your blog, just haven't had anything to report lately. I agree with the importance (and absence) of the Fourth Estate, not just in Boone but in quality, nationally. When a society loses its newspapers and journalism everyone suffers. We've moved to Arizona. Winters and the pace of life beckoned us to the sun. Miss old friends that we had an occasional beer or coffee with like Tom Rinker, BHS-55,  and J. Peterson, BHS-56, and you and the McDonald's group. Your comments and editorial about the void in Boone were well written and thought out. Sad to see your reader's comments that the Ogden paper took longer to read than the one that services Boone. We're alive and well and sincerely appreciate you and your contributors and Boone."
K-----K
Here's something to wonder about. Ever since Redeker's closed on South Story, their former facility has been closed. However, there has always been a huge "For Sale" sign in front. The Kornerman noticed the sign is gone. In addition, these old eyes have also noticed, on a couple occasions, lights on in that building AND, on one occasion, noticed a couple guys were standing in front and having a visit. Remember, if anything happens there we were the first to give you an inkling.
Speaking of such things, I know its hard to believe but the old Kornerman and, at least, one of my coffee mates get ornery on occasion and start business rumors just to see how long those stories will be returned to us............usually within a week or so. For example, we thought maybe the old Depot/Giggling Goat would make a good place for a roller skating rink and/or how about the old Redeker building for a kids entertainment center with bumper cars, games, and maybe a couple lanes for bowling. Sounds like a good tale. At various times we've also had Cracker Barrel and Cold Stone Creamery coming to town.  I don't know why but, for some reason, it seems like the rest of our coffee group and other groups in McDonald's, who have seized our "plant," refuse to take some of the things we say seriously any more.
K-----K
One of our good viewers had a suggestion for Wanda Lingren, who relies on newspapers, at a cost, simply for the TV guide if for nothing else. We know Wanda has a computer because we receive emails from her. So, why not go online to get the TV guide and print it out. I did a test.......googled TV guide and there it was on the screen for my area. Easy pickin's.
K-----K
The Kornerman was so pleased to hear from a wonderful KK contributor, Gary Hessel, BHS-50, who included a holiday picture of his family. I guess Gary's "real" home is Monroe, WI. but the guy gets around, despite a few health issues in the last year. He's been spending time in Arizona, visited the Dominican Republic, is taking his daughters to New York to attend an opera, "Hamilton" and do some other sightseeing prior to going back to Arizona for the rest of the winter. At 84, he's not letting any grass grow. Good for him and a big thanks to him also.
K-----K
Barry Wills, BHS-58, likes to keep us chuckling. He wrote, "I really think tossing and turning in the night should be considered exercise."
K-----K
Good to hear from United grad Gary Knox again and he has provided some info that we're anxious to pass on and will in the next edition.
Did you know Boone Junior College once had a football program? I bet even the DMACC folks aren't aware of that. More about it Saturday.
