I Was There Every Sunday Morn

In our last meeting, the Kornerman mentioned that while watching a television program he had been awakened to a good memory of the 1960's. We also mentioned the name of Dale Oliver, wondering if that would ring any viewer's bell. Alas, it didn't.
The program I was watching was Bill Anderson's Country Family Reunion. Its on RFD-TV on Friday nights at 7 p.m. and features some of the true (older) country stars. Its not always gospel but it was on this night.
The Kornerman told Jo, "when I was in my 20's, I was a very faithful Evangelical Free church attender.......never missed a Sunday morning and I especially enjoyed Rev. Dale Oliver. I thought he was outstanding.......always with a great message." She looked at me somewhat skeptically, so then I explained, "I was working the Sunday morning shift at KWBG and was the guy that pushed all the right buttons etc. to put Rev. Oliver and the E Free service on the air each week."

Here's another question and I hope for a better response to this one. A viewer wrote that it cost young athletes who participate in a high school sport in his state, $500, just to register for that opportunity. That's not a state fee, its a local one. I was surprised.  Is that true in Iowa........in Boone, Iowa these days....... that there's a registration fee for participation?
The Kornerman remembers in the earliest days of Little League when a suggestion of a fee for playing was strenuously objected to by me and others. In those years, we were by no means fancy but we were able to have, with the help of some sponsors, a very successful program with no fee charged for participating. I've continued to feel that way through the years. Obviously, as more and more frills, more uniforms etc., were added, more income was needed. But why not just less frills was always my feeling. I thought the kids played pretty well in sponsor t-shirts and they seemed to have lots of fun and.........it didn't cost the parents a bit.

What's this.......a facebook rumor?........the Elks, trying for a comeback here, has purchased the old Boone News building? Just a very unsubstantiated rumor!!

John Kueck, BHS-61, spent many youthful days at the old Herman Park skating rink. He took an image of the new rink and asked, "is it smaller compared to the one we had in our day?" The new one is 100 x 200 which, yes, is much smaller than the one used way back in the 50's-60's..........probably equal to the one used in more recent years.
