After All These Years........

It appears there is quite a shakeup underway in the Boone funeral home community.
Stark Welin Funeral Home at 609 Seventh Street, and, also with a Stratford satellite, was first established at the Boone site in 1888 and has been operated by the Welin and Stark families and Bruce Conlin through the years.  Harry Schroeder began the Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth and Story in 1932 and, it was purchased in recent years by Aaron Schroeder of Jefferson. Since 1986, Larry Schroeder has offered Schroeder Memorial Chapel at 1006 Sixth Street.
As far as the Kornerman knows, there have been no official announcements, however, there are indications that all three services are undergoing operational changes.
The Kornerman first noticed that on the Schroeder Memorial website, the name Reimers has been appearing alongside that of Larry Schroeder. Joseph Reimers and  Larry Schroeder are listed as Funeral Directors and a name change to Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel appears to be underway.
Meantime, there are indications that Stark Welin and the Schroeder Funeral Home on Story are combining forces. Aaron Schroeder is listed as the Funeral Director/Owner of the combination and on the Stark Welin website, the history and staff links are "being revised."

Hip hip horray's to the Boone Park Board. They have officially designated the brand new ice skating rink, at its new location, the John Hansen Memorial Ice Skating Rink.
For years, the skating rink was located on the north side of Park Avenue at the bottom of the big hill. The new rink is located in the Gutteridge Equestrian area on the south side of Park Avenue up the hill from the old rink. Both are/were located in Herman Park.
In recent years, the old rink became inoperable much of the time due to environmental issues and despite the fact that the late John Hansen personally worked hour after hour after hour, both as a member of the Park Board, and, in other times, simply as a proud Boone citizen, in an attempt to keep that rink viable. He would be so proud of the new facility which may or may not have ever occurred if it wasn't for his steadfast support of this great entertainment facility for area residents.

Perhaps in a few days.......or not, like next Thursday, BNR readers will read more details about these "breaking stories" of interest which our weekly newspaper hasn't covered to date. The Korner strikes again, first and foremost.

While watching TV the Kornerman was hit by a memory that goes back to the 60's. Let's just ask, "who out there remembers Dale Oliver?" More details in the next edition.

Bits and Pieces: (1) Maybe the idea we presented, in jest, isn't so crazy after all. We suggested maybe the old Redeker building could house a kids entertainment center with bumper cars, various games and maybe a bowling lane or two. John Kueck, BHS-61, wrote that,"a wave of arcades is sweeping Minneapolis." He's wondering if, "this new restaurant/entertainment is for the millennials?"
(2) The recent SBS Tour of Golf Champions was held in Maui and Larry Kelley, BHS-64, had a front row seat. Always the showman, Larry pointed out that he could be seen on the telecast of the tourney. He wrote, "Russell Knox on hole number three found his ball in some weeds. I was helping him find his ball. I had a purple t-shirt on and a white visor with tan shorts." The Kornerman is sorry I missed it.
