IT IS WHAT IT IS

I, the Kornerman, Jerry Manriquez and the late Gretchen Otis are/were collectors. I guess all humans are collectors of sorts, with various items that have been accumulated over the years. And, when you get to the "upper ages" of those years, its amazing the material that clogs all available space..........basement, attic, etc.

But,  that mentioned trio succumbed to a special, a unique, collection affliction........all things Boone, with an even more special lean toward Boone High and Boone Sacred Heart histories or mysteries.

Jerry, BHS-57, has that wonderful website of his that is more than a huge fistful of great such information. Hours, even days, can be spent joyfully perusing his site and bringing back the magic of those school days, rule days of years ago.

Gretchen Caldwell Otis, BHS-57, was completely unafraid of stepping on anyone's toes when it came to ferreting out information on activities involving former BHS or BSH students. She would follow every lead possible, including those obtained via numerous phone conversations, locally and beyond, to locate career paths, deaths, weddings and moves etc. etc. pertaining to former Booneites.

The Kornerman? BHS-53. Being in the "news" business throughout much of my life, I had an easier way of obtaining such historical info.......and I just kept adding and adding more with no inclination to ever really "clean it out."

Unfortunately, there does come a time. Age prevails and its a sure bet that a day will come when the "collecting" is over. Gretchen, of course, is gone and a valuable resource disappeared with her passing. Jerry and I, 83 and 87 respectively, are still active today but who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Meantime, Jerry and I now begin wondering, more often than not, "what does the future hold (if any) for all of this vast information we have accumulated." Its been hard, but we've already faced the realization that the younger generation has so many different directions to take their lives these days that anything historical is of little interest to most.

On his website, Jerry has listed every BHS/BSH graduate each year, starting in (gasp) 1889. However, I noticed recently that the 2015 class was the last so honored. That fact and my recent acquisition of some very old Scrolls prompted me to contact Jerry.

To my question, he replied, "I stopped listing because Boone High did not want to send them to me." Regarding old Scrolls, Jerry never did keep them "on hand." He just made copies and returned them to the senders. He added, "I tried giving some scrolls to the Historical Society but they said they didn't want them, since they already had them?"

In all honestly, Jerry did confess, "since I'm getting long in the tooth, it takes so long to scan, improve and convert the scrolls for upload that I don't want to do it anymore. Also, the new yearbooks are so large now, not like our old yearbooks."

So, here we are......a couple old duffers with an unknown, but limited amount of time remaining, and lots of historical information with no future destination determined.  By the way, we're still accumulating more every day it seems. I guess you could say its habit forming.

When the time comes, would you be interested?

P.S. Jerry and wife, Joanna Lacey Manriquez, BSH-56, recently relocated. They lived in Norco, CA for 46 years but have now moved 55 miles away to San Jacinto, CA. By the way, that wonderful website is.......http://boonesacheart.

WELLNESS/RECREATION CENTER DREAM LIVES ON

Boone proponents of a Wellness/Recreation Center received a boost from the Boone City Council at the council's regular meeting, June 21.

You may recall that in March, voters said "no" to such a plan, which called for an increase in the city's franchise fee on utilities to repay resulting debt.

A new plan, offered at Tuesday's meeting, would provide a different payment option. It calls for issuing General Obligation Local Option Sales Tax Bonds, not to exceed $10,000,00. In other words, the bond would be paid by the existing Local Option Sales Tax that has been in place since 1990.

Despite the change in payment plan, the issue still draws some opposition. The fact the issue had already been defeated once has been cited, others noted that the cost of any such project in the current economic climate would certainly incur even more additional funding and many voters simply believe the proposed location in the midst of the "downtown" area is not a good option. It was noted by some that they felt the proposed funding could be better used for other city purposes such as sanitary sewer improvements following flooding and basement backups in some homes from recent heavy rains.

Supporters feel it is a necessary addition to the community and would fill needs for youth recreational activities and provide services for older residents as well. Some have supported the project as a quality of life offering that is not currently available in Boone.

Petitions containing more than enough signatures calling for another special election were presented to the council and that body eventually voted unanimously to hold a special election on a new proposed bond issue for March 7, 2023.

P.S. It was announced at the meeting that a Jimmy John's will be coming to Boone.

The Kornerman mentioned in the most recent edition that I did NOT broadcast the Boone games from the 1962 National Babe Ruth World Series......I was busy managing that all-star team. The memory caused me to wonder, "who did broadcast those games on KWBG?"

Bernie Lewiston wrote, "that was before my time at KWBG but I remember Dave Boehm telling me that Kenny Carpenter, BHS-52, did that air work. Kenny was working at BG as a sales representative at that time.

A VERY KIND GESTURE.

I, the Kornerman, cannot tell a lie. Yes, I was languishing in my favorite chair, making no progress whatsoever. Suddenly, a ringing at our door made a big difference, providing an excellent reason for getting something positive done.

The visitor was Gary Richmond, BHS-57, who, despite the fact we hadn't been face-to-face in quite some time, showed a kindness, a thoughtfulness, that, in some cases, don't seem as prevalent these days as once shown.

As Gary explained, he had recently attended a garage sale and viewed a sack full of several old Boone High Scrolls priced at 50-cents, total. Yes, it was a bargain too good to pass up, but then what? For some reason, a thought of the Kornerman and his Korner blog appeared and a trip to 928 South Jackson followed. "I thought maybe that would be something you would be interested in seeing," he said. "and, by the way, keep that blog coming," he added.

I have a few Scrolls from my personal era on hand but the ones Gary provided are dated as follows.......1923, 1925, 1926, 1928, 1932, 1933 and 1944. In addition, there were two interesting BHS and Sacred Heart class reunion programs, the 50th, 1943-93, and the 55th, 1943-1998, included.

Much like those offered these days, the reunions were three-day events that featured a main banquet gathering as well as ancillary offerings. A lengthy list of those who attended, including their addresses and phone numbers, as well as a list of deceased former classmates were included. I counted over 150 names in the earliest reunion and 138 in the latter one. Its strange....but the name George Flagg caught my eye in each program. I had forgotten that THE George Flagg.......a Des Moines city councilman for over 20 years was a Boone guy, BHS-43. Have you been on George Flagg Parkway in the capitol city recently?

There's lots to look at.....I found my dear mother's picture in the 1928 scroll and wife Jo thinks its lots of fun just reading the old business sponsoring ads that appear in them.....a majority, perhaps remembered, but now, long gone.

Gary's wife is the former Kay Turner, BSH-58, and many of you may remember his dad, Wayne Richmond.

Thanks so much Gary for even thinking of me and, thus, providing lots of material for future study and enjoyment.

FACT OR FICTION? STORIES GALORE

Some old legs didn't allow any golfing but the Kornerman sure enjoyed all the camraderie at the recent Monte Anderson golf outing at Cedar Pointe. I was an invited guest.

Monte, BHS-69, passed way too early but it was his death that sparked an annual charitable get-together of old classmates, teammates and friends........and, my oh my, the stories that made the rounds, some true and some that, perhaps, leaned a little the other direction. Nevertheless, golf was played, beverages flowed and the accompanying smiles and outright guffaws were something everyone seemed to enjoy in remembrance.

I sat at a table with Kelly McMullan, BHS-67, Steve Fagan, Mike Sundall, BHS-68, and Al Dannatt, BHS-66, most of the hour or so that I was there. I know I'll miss naming some that came by or were in attendance but to give you an idea.......there was Marty Dannatt, BHS-68, Todd Moorman, BHS-76, Jack Rusnak, BHS-67, Jackie Rinehart, BHS-63, Tim Johnson, BHS-83, the Bollenbaughs, Marge, BHS-76, and Kenny, BHS-73, the Rinehart's, Gayle and Marty, BHS-65, and Doug Nauman, BHS-83, an old neighbor of mine, who I hadn't seen since I watched him play basketball for the Drake Bulldogs.

I'll tell you this too........there will be others who read this that were not there who certainly wished they were, to soak up all the historical rhetoric. Tom Peterson was one. I informed him and he immediately went into shock and dismay with, "I wish I had known."

Speaking of Peterson, BHS-67, he wrote of some Rippey remembrances. "Rick Neely, BHS-67, and I also played for Rippey, I think at the same time as Ace Dannatt, but maybe that was the following year. I remember Jack Teagarden, BHS-67, played when I did as I had an opportunity to pitch  in relief against the Falcons. I was lucky enough to strikeout Steve Crandell, BHS-66, and hit Kelly McMullan with a curveball. Several of the '67 BHS state champion players went to and restarted baseball at Boone Junior College in 1968. Harold Johnson was the coach."
K-----K

At the time the Des Moines Area Community College softball team was playing in the national tournament in Alabama recently  I was thinking how unfortunate it was that folks "back home" in Boone weren't able to hear the games locally on the radio. However, I understand completely what a difficult task that would be these days......worry about covid, the tremendous expense of housing and feeding an announcer for several days, in addition to any technical expenses that I'm completely unaware of.

Things were much different in the 50's/60's. I recall at least three times that local radio was able to broadcast out-of-state contests.
The Boone Merchants fast pitch softball team won the state championship in 1958 and entered regional play in Springfield, MO. As I've mentioned before, I was on that team pretty much in name only. In fact, I was such an important player, Manager Everett Long, BHS-49, suggested that rather than join the team roster for the regional, I travel down with them and broadcast their games back to Boone, and that's what I did.
The Merchants were also involved in another game I broadcast. They traveled to Aurora, IL to face the Sealmasters, who were simply the National fast pitch champions. I don't recall exactly......it might have been a doubleheader since the Boone team had traveled so far. Anyway, I was there to broadcast that game or games back to Boone.
The Sealmasters star pitcher, the best fast pitch hurler in the world at the time, was Harvey Stuerkel. The Boone team collected exactly one hit. As I recall, Merchants outfielder Kenny Knowles, BHS-52,...... ducked out of the way..... of an inside pitch, and the ball, somehow, hit his bat and went into short right field in just the right spot for Boone's lone hit against Stuerkel.
Then, of course, in 1962, the Boone Babe Ruth All Star team won the state and regional championships to become one of just eight Ruth teams in the world to earn a berth in the Babe Ruth World Series in Bridgeton, NJ. It was a long trip and I did not broadcast those games because I was the manager of that team. I don't recall exactly who did broadcast the two games the Boone team played there but they were aired on local radio back to central Iowa.

John McGee, 82, Arvada, CO. BHS-58. His wife, Sherri, survives.

Thomas Doyle Brekke, 64, Ames. Born in Ames. AHS-77. As a son lovingly described him, "Dad was the least handicapped, handicapped person you could ever meet." He worked for the DOT from 1977-2008 but he had much more than that to offer......as a longtime member of the Jaycees, a counselor at Camp Sunnyside and as a youth sports coach. He was also a volunteer speaker about bullying, acceptance and what it was like to be disabled. In the face of much familial criticism and objections, he and Sue Shuey, BHS-78, were married in 1980. Eventually, he was completely embraced by her family. Tom had a passion for all kids, especially his own, and the Green Bay Packers. He was the life of the party for many years during his famous ISU football tailgates. From his wheelchair, he bowled and played football and basketball with the "kids." Tom simply refused to live a life that was defined by his disability. Survivors include Sue, as well as a son, a daughter, a sister AND some current or former Boone Shuey's. His in-laws, Sue's parents, were Ken, BHS-56, and JoAnn Shuey, both deceased and her brothers are Stephen, BHS-79, and Monti Shuey, BHS-81.

Joyce Ann Olson, 85, Pinellas Park, Florida. Born in Hampton. Dayton HS-54. Earned teaching degrees from Iowa State Teachers and Drake University and taught first grade for 42 years at Boxholm and Dayton elementary schools. She retired in 1996. Married Dean Olson in 1956 and the couple resided in Dayton for 54 years before moving to Florida. Two daughters survive. Local memorial services are pending.

Roberta "Bobbi" Lynn Riordan Carlson, 61, Madrid. Born in Boone. BHS-79. Married Gary Warren in 1979 and the couple later divorced. Graduated from DMACC in 1999 as an LPN. For over 20 years, she worked as an LPN. There are several Boone survivors, daughters Jenelle Warren and Carissa Nickell, a sister, Cindy Waters and brothers, Mike and Jerry Riordan all of Boone. Services in Boone.

Irene Lucille Scholl Delp, 92, Ogden. Born in South Dakota. Platte HS. Married Warren J. Delp in 1949. The couple farmed south of Jefferson and then in rural Greene County. When they retired, they moved to Ogden. A daughter and two sons survive. Services in Ogden.

PETE TO "REST UP"

You had to wonder if the guy would ever take a normal breath. Yes he is, but its just a respite. He pledges, "I'll be back."
Boone's famous ultra-runner, Pete Kostelnick, BHS-2005, wrote, "sometimes your heart wants one thing, but your body and mind don't agree. After a lot of sleepless nights, I've decided to step away from competitive ultrarunning for awhile, which means no Badwater 135, 50-states or Australia. I appreciate all your support. I'll be back."
All of Boone and well beyond know of the almost superhuman pace he's been following in recent years while establishing himself as, perhaps, the best of the best, nationally and maybe even internationally, in long distance running, much of it under the most dire of travel conditions.
The son of Boone residents Charles and Clair Kostelnick, Pete may have gained the most prominence with his record setting cross country run from the west coast to New York in record setting time. HOWEVER, that's just one of the many challenges he has conquered, including those mentioned Badwater and 50 state races.
Finally, a break and one well deserved.

We mentioned recently the induction of Connie Younger, a well known Boone resident's induction, posthumously, into the Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame.
Vern Modeland, BHS-50, wrote, "A lot of us, involved along the line in aviation and flying, used the mentioned CYA "
For many years, Younger was the manager of the Boone Airport and had a business called CY Aviation.
Another quick note: Fareway continues to move forward. Their complex east of town will soon be including still another huge warehouse, a new $1,240,000 facility.

One of the COVID victims, locally, was the annual Iowa Municipal Band Festival. Usually boasting a full day of performances by eight Iowa Municipal Bands, last year, just four bands were available.
The 30th annual event, scheduled for July 9th, will again feature a full card of great music. Two of the bands will be making their first festival appearance while the Ames band has missed just one event and the Boone band has, of course, been on hand for all 30 concerts.
Its amazing that many of the bands each year come from quite a distance to display their talents. Here's the complete 2022 roster.
11 a.m. Ames Municipal Band, 29th appearance; noon. Tinder City Band of Maquoketa, 2nd appearance; 1 p.m..Greater Waverly Municipal Band, first; 2 p.m. Marshalltown Municipal Band, 9th; 3 p.m..Big River Brass Band, Quad Cities, 2nd; 4 p.m. West Des Moines Community Band, first; 5 p.m. Heart of Iowa Band, Ames, fifth and at 6 p.m. Boone Municipal Band, 30th.

Noting the recent death of Ruth Morgan, some former Toreadors had remembrances of Ruth's late husband, Ed Morgan. Ed taught science and was, primarily, the head boys swimming coach at BHS. However, he did some work in other sports as well.
John Hinz, BHS-64, said, "who can forget Ed's famous one-armed push ups!! After watching Ed do 10 of them, I don't recall anyone "bad mouthing him." Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, added, "I remember one time at ninth grade football practice when we had to do a drill where we simulated chopping wood. Morgan walked down a line, looked at Steve Roeder, BHS-64, and said, "what are you chopping, balsa wood? Ed had a delicious sense of humor."

WE'RE SPORTS HEAVY THIS TIME

Regarding the item in a recent Korner about the Rippey baseball diamond renovation, Allan Dannatt, BHS-66 wrote, "back in 1968 or 69, Jack Teagarden, BHS-67, Danny McDevitt, BHS-66, and I played for the Rippey Demons semi-pro team. The lighting was terrible and the field was not in good shape but it was a lot of fun. McDevitt threw the only no-hitter in the Central Iowa Semi Pro League that summer."

It must be in the genes........lots of hard work too I'm sure.
Back in 1984, Toreador Bill Courter won the Class 1-A state singles tennis title after a third-place finish the year before. Moving ahead almost 40 years, his son, Hugh Courter, was a member of the Class 1-A state championship double teams this spring. In fact, his Cedar Rapids Xavier team made a mockery of  the Class 1-A division. Their top singles player, Brady Horstmann, won that title, Courter and Declan Coe took the doubles crown and the Xavier team won that championship. Courter, of course, was a senior member of the team. He's also a baseball relief pitcher and earned a victory in relief, 12-4, over Solon as the latter part of the tennis season was being overlapped by the start of baseball. A pretty talented young man.
P.S. Boone's Sally and the late Lloyd Courter were Bill's parents and young Hugh's grandparents. Also, Lloyd's dad was also Hugh Courter, the proprietor of the Bide-A-Wee pool hall. Remember?

The old days of Madrid semi-pro baseball came up in conversation recently. Yes, Madrid was quite the successful baseball town in the 40's, 50's period. I remember their lineup featured some great Italian players......Joe Radosovich, Willy Galetich, Londie Ceretti, Emil Bozich and others. Radosovich was a tough southpaw pitcher and Galetich, a catcher, actually signed a major league contract but wartime service interrupted his chances of furthering his baseball career. I can't remember if Willy's brother,Lou Galetich, played baseball but he coached a 1953 Clinton St. Mary's basketball team to a state championship. Later, he served as Madrid mayor for several terms.
As a youngster, I was their batboy as three of my uncles played for Boone teams so I remember lots of Madrid/Boone games. They were highly-spirited to say the least. At that time, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Odd Fellows Lodge had good semi-pro teams. Gib Thompson was the Odd Fellows star pitcher and  I remember one year the VFW paid a pitcher, Dick Hein, to play for them. He had been a first team Big Ten all-conference pitcher. Semi-pro baseball was serious stuff in those days.
K-----K
Prior to old Jimmy Archer Field at 10th and Tama, there was a great well-lighted adult baseball park on that same site where those Boone semi-pro teams often played. The New York Yankees had a terrific catcher in those days, Mickey Owen. Unfortunately, he made a major error to allow the winning run to score against his Yankees in the deciding game of the 1941 World Series. When his major league career ended, Owen did some barnstorming all over the country. I remember he made an appearance, at a cost of course, at one of the Boone team's games. I remember interviewing him and, in fact, somewhere I think I still have a nice picture of he and I taken during that interview.

Younger will be inducted posthumously into the Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame in Greenfield, August 27, in conjunction with a fly-in. (2) In her first such competition ever, Stefanie Davis-Muller of Boone recently won the all-around women's physique award at the National Physique Committee Iowa State Championships. (3) Its official......Ankeny has now passed West Des Moines as the metro's biggest suburb with a population of 70,287 to WDM's  69,792. (4) They refuse to give in. All Iowans are invited to gather at the site of the battleship Iowa in southern California on that date for the 121st edition of  that event.

Finally, Gary Knox, United Community HS-58, after reading the last Korner edition about the passage of time and change has become a poet. He wrote, "the eyesight is failing; my steps are slower; many people I knew...gone; but my memories remain; inside me, I'm still the same; a proud '58 UC grad; and every morning at six, turn to Mo's special blog; and enjoy "just remembering"; the way it once was in a place called home and named Boone." Gary says, "I'm a Boone County farm kid at heart and I was an Iowa teacher for 49 years."

THE PASSAGE OF TIME AND CHANGE

I, the Kornerman, was intriqued by a personal narrative I recently visited. The title was, "I'm retired and now a nobody......it really isn't so bad."

The author was Thomas Heath, who retired at 65, after 30 years of service to the Washington Post newspaper as a reporter.

I don't know, maybe I feel like, "hey, sounds like my story." I did retire from the Iowa High School Athletic Association at age 65 BUT begged on to work a few more years at my old stomping grounds, the Boone News Republican, before a FINAL retirement.

In case you didn't know, time passes very quickly and life changes with the time. Those many years ago, when I was writing sports for the Boone News Republican, broadcasting hundreds of athletic games on KWBG radio and, even into the early 70's, serving at the IHSAA, I felt pretty confident I knew almost every one of are 12,000 plus citizens of Boone.....some close, others at just a glance or from hearsay.

But, what a difference the years make.  Now, hundred's, if not thousand's, of those old acquaintances are gone. I'm reminded of that twice a week, writing this column and watching the Korner's viewing numbers go down. A new breed is in town and a majority have no knowledge, whatsoever, of what I wrote or broadcast about Toreador sports and even my connection with the IHSAA. Kelley's Korner? What's that and who is this Irish guy?

But you know what? That really isn't so bad. I'm alive, have a great family, still enjoy what writing I do, love any positive success any Iowan, or particularly, any Booneite, can achieve, sportswise or otherwise, AND am positive the Cubbies will rebound sometime in my remaining years.

So, no hard feelings, NONE.  I had my prime time and enjoyed it immensely. Others now have their turn to "make their mark."

I, the Kornerman, is retired and pretty much a "nobody" but.........."it really isn't so bad."

As a side note, one of the great honors the IHSAA bestowed upon me when I retired was the naming of an annual Morris D. Kelley Award. A nice plaque had a picture of me, in announcing form, on it and several each year were awarded to Iowa High School Public Address Announcers nominated by their home school. Almost every Iowa community has that "someone" who, for many years, have announced their athletic events.
The award began in 2002 and continued until 2019 when the pandemic altered many things. In that time, some 85 Iowa P.A. announcers were honored. Apparently, the program has now run its course and 2019 was the concluding year. Proving again, passing time befits change.
Maybe this is a good time to clear something else up.
I think it was three years ago, Jo and I were invited to be the Grand Marshall's of the annual Pufferbilly Parade. What a tremendous "hometown' honor. We were so appreciative but also a bit uncomfortable. So we declined. I've always closely connected the Pufferbilly parade with the Pufferbilly event and we told the committee that, honestly, our only connection with Pufferbilly has been watching the parade and, maybe, eating a great sandwich afterwards. Surely, we said, there were many other people, perhaps overlooked, who did much, much more for Pufferbilly, for a long period of time, than we ever did. Regardless of our decision, we will always cherish the fact that our work was so highly thought of, it deemed such a wonderful response from some fellow citizens.
Somebody criticized saying that lots of people must have nominated us and were disappointed. If that's so, thank you to those individuals who felt we were deserving. Please accept our profound apology.
Oh yes, the passage of time and corresponding change. I think I first really realized my old age was when someone said, "didn't you USE TO BE Mo Kelley?"
I was....and still am and hope to keep continuing with the Korner and whatever else I'm capable of doing positively for this community which has been such an important part of my life for 70-plus years.

REGRETS

I, the Kornerman, feel terrible. What can be worse than feeling its necessary to start an edition of the Korner with a profound apology because of a perceived senior moment?
In a recent edition, "Memory After Memory," we told of receiving a letter from a Boone native, BHS-62, and we reported some of his comments.
However, we had the contributor all wrong. It was Fred Groat, BHS-62, that wrote the letter, not his deceased brother, Doug, as we indicated more than once in our confused report.
I apologize profusely for this error and, as mentioned, it must just be one of those "old age" or senior moments. Its a poor excuse but probably factual.
AND, what makes it so especially egregious is the fact that much of Fred's letter was overly complimentary of the work I've done through the years promoting the Boone community and our citizens success on the radio, in the newspaper and via the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Perhaps Fred's flowery tributes may have increased this old guy's head size too.....hopefully, on a temporary basis.
P.S. To add to my misery, wife Jo added to my slippage by pointing out that I had misspelled Missouri in the same edition. I had it Mizzouri. This growing older ain't fun folks.

A former KWBG associate of mine, Mark Campbell, BHS-67, wrote, "the recent challenge by Mr. Groat to find another five-syllable sports team, like Toreadorettes, inspired me to try. No luck, but there is an equal.....the Everly Cattlefeederettes. They won state basketball titles in both 1966 and 68. Everly High School no longer exists....they were absorbed into the Clay Central school system. The idea of adding "ettes" has  intrigued and mystified me for years. Today, we see "Lady" added to mascot names....Lady Tigers, Lady Comets.....and that makes sense. To me, the strangest names come from Mediapolis. The boys are the Bulldogs and the girls are the Bullettes.....not the Bulldogettes."

Talked to old buddy Mel Murken, BHS-59, on the phone yesterday. I had intended to call him but he beat me to it. I wanted to compliment him on the wonderful segment I saw on KCCI-TV recently regarding the renovation of the Rippey ball park. Mel's first teaching/coaching job was at Rippey and when he retired, he decided to return to that town. At one time, the Rippey ball park was one of the best around. In fact, the Iowa High School Athletic Association chose it numerous times as a host to important tournament games, including even at least one state championship contest. Unfortunately, the passage of time and lack of local interest allowed the park to deteriorate. Baseball has been a passion of Mel's for life. He coached Ankeny High baseball for many years and was so successful he became a member of the Iowa Baseball Hall of Fame. When he returned to Rippey, he refused to accept the state of that ball park. With the limited help of a couple friends, he has completely restored that park. KCCI-TV took note of that and did a very nice 8-10 minute segment, including interviews with Mel, on the park rebuild. It was great fun to see.

Congratulations to the Des Moines Area Community College softball team. The Boone Campus Bears completed a wonderful season (over 50 victories) with a fifth place finish in the NATIONAL tournament. Emma Dighton, BHS-2021,who hit a ton of home runs for the Toreadors during her high school career, did the same for the Bears and won numerous recognition for her achievements. She will leave DMACC after one season to join the Drake University softball program. Her parents are Dan and Sally Wulkow Dighton, BHS-87.
