Boone proponents of a Wellness/Recreation Center received a boost from the Boone City Council at the council's regular meeting, June 21.
You may recall that in March, voters said "no" to such a plan, which called for an increase in the city's franchise fee on utilities to repay resulting debt.
A new plan, offered at Tuesday's meeting, would provide a different payment option. It calls for issuing General Obligation Local Option Sales Tax Bonds, not to exceed $10,000,00. In other words, the bond would be paid by the existing Local Option Sales Tax that has been in place since 1990.
Despite the change in payment plan, the issue still draws some opposition. The fact the issue had already been defeated once has been cited, others noted that the cost of any such project in the current economic climate would certainly incur even more additional funding and many voters simply believe the proposed location in the midst of the "downtown" area is not a good option. It was noted by some that they felt the proposed funding could be better used for other city purposes such as sanitary sewer improvements following flooding and basement backups in some homes from recent heavy rains.
Supporters feel it is a necessary addition to the community and would fill needs for youth recreational activities and provide services for older residents as well. Some have supported the project as a quality of life offering that is not currently available in Boone.
Petitions containing more than enough signatures calling for another special election were presented to the council and that body eventually voted unanimously to hold a special election on a new proposed bond issue for March 7, 2023.
P.S. It was announced at the meeting that a Jimmy John's will be coming to Boone.

The Kornerman mentioned in the most recent edition that I did NOT broadcast the Boone games from the 1962 National Babe Ruth World Series......I was busy managing that all-star team. The memory caused me to wonder, "who did broadcast those games on KWBG?"
Bernie Lewiston wrote, "that was before my time at KWBG but I remember Dave Boehm telling me that Kenny Carpenter, BHS-52, did that air work. Kenny was working at BG as a sales representative at that time.
