REUNION WRAPUP

In an earlier edition, we had listed the 1958 class members who attended their 80th birthday reunion which was held recently at the Herman Park pavilion.

There were 13 on that original list. However, there were several who, apparently, made a last minute decision to attend. The final count was 30.

The latecomers included Kay Turner Richmond, Harold and Sharon Blaskey, Ruth Askland Bowes, Hans and Wanda Goeppinger, Bill Barquist, Karen Mustapha Langmade,  Larry Ford, Steve Shaler and Doris Stotts, wife of classmate Harold Stotts.

All in all, it was a highly successful event.

A surprise arrived in the mail the other day. A September 2020 edition of the Boone County Historical Society's Trail Tales. Its been some time since the last edition.

This edition is mainly about Boone Counties smaller, incorporated towns.

There are nice segments about the history of Beaver, Berkley, Boxholm, Fraser, Luther, Madrid, Ogden, Pilot Mound, Sheldahl, Jordan, Moingona, Napier, Elk Rapids, Ridgeport, Pea's Point, Angus, Mackey and Zenorsville.

Actually, according to the info presented in the book, there were over 35 other small, unincorporated towns that once existed in Boone County. However, there were few facts about those towns available.

Ever heard of Belle Point, Ericson, Riverside, Garden Prairie, Rogerdale, Grayson, Wheeler, Centerville, Hull, Coal Valley, Cassidy's Corner, Logansport, Wolf, Quincy and Yough?

In addition, the history of the  Boxholm Lions Club is featured in this new edition.

As Jessica Stanley, the BCHS President mentioned in her message, "This published edition of Trail Tales is a triumph, one of our goals achieved despite less than ideal conditions. Even with our many trials, we are finally able to return to the best part of your Historical Society, stories about Boone County history."

Congratulations to the hard working BCHS Board and any of the other volunteers who are finally beginning to see the fruits of their labor.

RAMBLINGS

Just a plethora of this and that.

The Kornerman understands the 80th birthday celebration of the classes of 1958 surpassed all expectations. Loren Frazier reported the final totals......29, including 18 classmates, three from the classes of 1959 and ten spouses or friends.

The last pre-report we had heard, there were just a dozen or so indicating they would be attending. However, there were many who made late decisions to attend. How did I know before hearing Loren's final official report? Steve Shaler of Saint Cloud, MN. and Larry Ford, also a Minnesota resident, stopped by our house after the event and brought me "up to date."

Those two were among those not on the original list of potential attendees and Steve mentioned several others who were there that hadn't been listed earlier.

So, apparently, it was an excellent reunion and the weather cooperated beautifully. Loren said, "people were excited. They loved the facility and were saying they want future get-togethers."

K-----K

Was sorry to hear of the passing of Don "Red" Houser who died at 90 in California.

That certainly brought back a great memory. "Red" graduated in 1949 and I was four years later in 1953 and, as an eighth grader, was "awed" by good athletes like he was at BHS. "Red" went on to ISU and participated in two or three sports there, including football.

Wouldn't you know, I clearly recall seeing, in person, the first Cyclone football game of "Red's" career there. It was against one of the Dakota schools at old Clyde Williams field and believe or not, "Red" I believe on the initial kickoff, ran it all the way back for a Cyclone touchdown. Wow, did this young Boone kid (me) have wide, excited eyes the result of that play by an ex-Toreador hero.

K-----K

More memories. Fellow KWBG alum Larry Kelley (no relation) sent me a real memory maker.

It was a picture of a KWBG radio log that I had filled out for Wednesday, Decoration Day, May 30, 1962.

The log, of course, showed all the on-air programs, their times and all of the commercials that were to be aired during the programs. The times of all the programs and commercials had to be logged in at the time they were aired.

It was fun to see the on-air schedule....Mo's Show, a DJ type program, was shown in addition to the famous 11 a.m. Bulletin Board news show announced by Signe Shaler and sponsored always by Wester Furniture. There was also a Mary Blane show. I don't remember that.

The commercials? Oh my gosh, there were tons of them.....all of the old businesses......Hamilton Hardware, Boone Dairy, Grahams, Duke Lindstrom cleaners, Duffy Appliance, Vogler-Nieman Chevy, H & M  Tires, Citizens Bank and even some out-of-city sponsors like Anderson-Erickson, Strand Bread and Knoxville Speedway. And this was just in the morning from 9 a.m. to noon.

Also interesting was the fact that all of the commercials showed how much they cost. Most were less than $2.00 but that Bulletin Board, which was a 15-minute newscast, cost Wester's $5.25 each day.

That was a lot of fun for these old eyes to see.

Awhile back we heard from my old northside neighbor, Patty Donovan McDonald, BSH-58.

Patty has been a resident of the Tulsa, OK area for several years and she wrote about the pandemic related teaching situation there. "I'm scheduled to start school doing a long-term Kindergarten substitute job for a teacher on maternity leave. I retired in 2010 after 40 years  of public school teaching, 12 years in Iowa at Urbandale, Stratford (1962-69) and Hudson, while my husband finished up at UNI. Then I followed up with the 28 years here, which have schools in Tulsa and Broken Arrow. I still enjoy teaching but without all the meetings."

REUNION DAY FOR CLASSES OF 1958

Tommorrow (Thursday) is a big day for the class of 1958. Their long awaited 80th birthday celebration  will take place at the Herman Park Pavilion, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m..

Eleven classmates from BHS and two from BSH have indicated, in advance, they plan to attend but that doesn't mean others can't make a late decision.

On hand for sure will be Howard Swain, George Eckstein, Jerry Wright, Loren Vogler, Tom Pestotnik, Pauline Bergloff Halupnick, Barry Wills, Jolene Sturtz Tate, Janice Springer Messinbrink, Joyce Springer Appenzeller, Delores Headley Miller, Loren Frazier and Pat Lacey Frazier.

By the way, remember we reported a couple editions ago that an 80th birthday card shower was planned for Priscilla Thomsen who lives in Lake City. It was hoped that at least 80 cards would be received but that was surpassed with 98 received at last report.

We understand she really appreciated reading the many cards and comments contained.

A NICE HONOR FOR BOONE NATIVE

Nancy (Nan) Hicks Ripley of Nevada, BHS-61, has received a wonderful national honor.

For her 2006 introduction, 'Scarlet Pimpernel', she is the winner of the 2019 Stout Silver Medal, the highest award given by the American Hemerocallis Society. She is just the 10th woman to receive the award in its almost 70-year history, for a plant from one of her earliest crosses.

Nan was to receive the medal at the 2020 national AHS convention this summer but the meeting was cancelled due to COVID-19.

'Scarlet Pimpernel' previously had won the Ned Roberts Spider/Unusual Form Award in 2013.

A keen gardener, as her Walkabout Gardens expanded, she hosted more and more tour groups. In 1998, one of those groups was the Marshalltown Master Gardeners and among them was Don Lovell, a daylily hybridizer, who suggested that Nan, a watercolorist, try her hand at hybridizing so she could "paint her own flower." He then immediately proceeded to show her the basics of making a cross. She was "hooked" and now she has won the highest honor given by the AHS.

More information about her daylilys can be found on her website....www.walkaboutgardens.com.

READY AND WAITING TO HEAR FROM YOU

Yes, after a few day's absence, the Kornerman is back in business and waiting to hear your stories/memories and comments.
Took a few days away for a family wedding and, thus, there was no "real" Korner Saturday and no  death reportage during the time off. However, we're now "home."
By the way, we've been stuck with a new "improved?" blog setup and it may take some time for this old blogger to figure things out.

Loren would love to hear from you.

BCHS UPDATE

A very select but small group of our friends and neighbors are continuing to work on the "comeback" of our Boone County Historical Society.
They're meeting on a regular basis and working under a strict format to get done what needs to be done to get this important community asset back to the high esteem it once held.
Like it or not, the financial situation must attract an important part of the group's agenda.
Potential grants are being studied, $2,000 was recently received from the city, a recent marketing letter brought in $1,500, there have been three new membership renewals and one new membership accepted. That's all good news.
Elevator repairs are being completed, ways of cutting the energy bill discussed and a petty cash fund that had reached over $300 has been whittled down to $50.
Committee chairpersons are needed for the Marketing and Gift Shop committees but there has been some talk of merging the two committees into one.
Then too, there's the tedious and continuing job of working on the budget and bylaws revision.
This group of volunteers has accepted the task of coming to bat, although behind 12-0 in the first inning. It isn't easy....lots of "grunt" work involved and we give them our thanks and support. They need that......but they also could use some breathing room via financial support.
Membership isn't what it used to be and that's what it needs to be. So, if you haven't "come back" yet, do so to give this new board the support they need to continue their restoration work.
