BE SAFE

With New Years Eve and New Years Day lurking, please be safe. Enjoy, but be safe.
K-----K
An interesting note from Steven Pace of Chicago. He wrote, "I was introduced to your blog by my former Jackson Street neighbor, RaeAnn  Clark. I left Boone in 1957, but I have a wonderful memory of Christmas in Boone. About 65 years ago, Santa would come to Boone by train. My mom would take me down to the Boone depot and we would watch the train come into the station. I remember Santa was always in the cab next to the engineer. He'd get off the train, talk to all the kids in the station, collect the mail, and leave. Mom and I would leave the station and head to the Coney Island for lunch. Oh, I miss the Coney Island. Here in Chicago, Santa takes the EL but, its not the same."
Editor's note. I think its safe to say Steven is no relation to our friend Mike Pace, also a former resident.

QUICK NOTES: (1) Received a nice holiday phone greeting from Roger Dutton, BHS-63. (2) Patrons of Hearing Services of Iowa, at 724 Allen Street, have been informed that effective, December 31, 2018, that office will be closing. They will continue their offices in Jefferson and Ames. (3) Lots of talk about who the occupants of the new "mall" at the old Redeker location will be. There's been off and on mention of a dance studio there but we've been pretty well assured that it is a go. Also rumored are Dollar Tree, U.S. Cellular (they are already there), Goodwill, Great Clips etc. (4) There's been a rumor of a coffee shop coming to the old location of Godfather's, current location of Intensitee etc. Sure looks like there's some new activity there.

K-----K
Clearing up the desk: (1) Jenelle Henry informs that she has found that Whitt's Drive In recipe for mexiburgers she was seeking. (2) Holiday greetings from Ron Hopkins, BSH-59. (3) Received a call from Mel Murken, BHS-59, who resides in Rippey in retirement. Mel's a fellow baseball nut (Hall of Fame high school coach of the sport) and he informs that he will soon head to Florida where he will stay until March. "Lots of major league baseball teams have spring training in the area so I'll be going to games practically every day," he said. (4) Nancy Jo Smith Bluhm, BHS-54, was in town to visit brother George and others and called to say, "hello." Had a nice visit with this longtime Korner supporter. She and husband, Paul, live in Pennsylvania. (5) The Kornerman wonders how many viewers caught the short note in the Des Moines Register the other day.......congratulations to Miney and Janet Moeller Hasstedt on their 60th wedding anniversary. Now there was a match, Hollywood style. Miney was a very big (tall...that is.....in his day) Ogden Bulldog basketball star and Janet was a Boone County beauty queen. We sent a congratulatory note.

HAVE THE MERRIEST EVER

Continuing with Larry Lindmark's memories of "Christmas in Boone." "(1) I remember going to  Woolworth's, in the block with the Rialto and Princess theaters, Osco Drug and Bowman's shoe store. Woolworth's would have much of the smaller merchandise enclosed by glass dividers. That is where we could purchase ceramic pieces of the nativity scene. Mary and Joseph, along with camels and sheep, sold for 10 to 15 cents each. Those figures are still displayed in our home today. (2) I remember mom and I coming out of the back door of the old Augustana Lutheran church following the midnight Christmas Eve worship service. As we stepped outside, the snow began to fall. Since the church moved to its present Greene Street location in 1960, Stark Welin Funeral Home has occupied that same site for decades. (3) I remember the large, elongated gold star positioned above the altar at Augustana Lutheran. (4) I remember ice skating for hours at McHose Park, gliding along to the tunes of "Peggy Sue" and other 1950's and 60's hits. (5) I remember on January 1, 1963, Chet and  Gladys Lawson inviting many friends to their home so that we could watch their color TV featuring the Boone High School marching band in the Tournament of Roses parade."
K-----K
Ogden High School grad, Sharil Morain, a former neighbor of ours, has responded to my laptop situation.
Lots of good tips.....things to buy that might be helpful or various adjustments to current equipment that might help.
     Thanks Sharil.

Memories of that great "run" from Alaska to Florida by Boone's own Pete Kostelnick, BHS-2005.
John Kueck, BHS-61, informs that there is a memory video available...…..http://youtu.be/Tekk3L XTLU

From our California correspondents, Max, BHS-46, and Larry Moore, BHS-52, "I understand your pic problems, with this high tech business, its frustrating. Not a day goes by that I need a nerd on my side. I just say, "Oh well, maybe it will fix itself." Lefty, the same way. I just coaxed him to get a cell phone. Land lines are becoming a thing of the past. I can remember my Boone number was 129J while sharing with three others. Mo, I admire you for keeping the Korner operating. I still look forward to Wednesday and Saturday. Roger Oxenford, BHS-45, moved to 15 miles from me in Tustin, CA, an assisted living place. My day is filled with sports. Cyclone football, I think, might beat the Hawks today with Purdy and Montgomery. Both schools seem good in basketball. Rah, rah  Toreadors. Thanks again for the connection I get from good old Boone,  I still love Boone. Larry wanted me to ask you.,.."When did basketball players file in a line to shake opponents hands?" I don't think  we did that in the 40's. But, my memory is going."

HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON

     Still working from a laptop...…..patience...….prayer..
K-----K
Christmas greetings from John, BHS-64, and Linda Hinz, Mary Shaler Day, BHS-61 and Larry Lindmark, BHS-63.
John Hinz wrote, "I may not have done adequate research before selecting, "the most affordable ski towns." That being said, Boone does have additional history with skiing. I recall my parents dropping my sister, Liz, off at a ski place on the south side of the Ogden hill on the original Highway 30. Perhaps you or your readers know the name and dates of operation of that business. I'm sorry kids my age didn't have a wonderful skiing facility like Seven Oaks available when we were growing up in Boone. What a hangout that would have been."
Mary Day's Christmas greeting was quite a production with the use of music and that wonderful voice and personality of hers to tell a neat Christmas story.
Larry Lindmark remembers Christmas in Boone when the Eldien's, Lantzes, Lindmarks and Orrs would gather at 206 Linn Street, the home of grandpa Bert and gramma Ethel. All of the grand children  would be treated to a visit by Santa, AKA uncle Roger Orr.
Memories of fathers working a second job around the holidays....my dad, Bob, worked fulltime at the National Guard Armory, but in December, he would also be delivering packages from the post office using guard trucks. Also, I was shopping at Sears, purchasing a jigsaw for my dad, and lo and behold, Chuck Lovin, a high school teacher, was the sales person who waiting on me..
I remember my mom's sewing club making Christmas gifts at their monthly meetings. I still hang my sequined stocking that mom made. Santa has filled it many years.
I remember the high school art teacher, Mrs Gibson's painted nativity scene lit up at her home on Garst Avenue."
Larry had more memories and we'll save them for next time.

ODDS AND ENDS: (1) I guess its official. I believe its in March the south side drive-in U.S. Bank will be closing. Bank patrons have been notified. That's the bank just north of McDonald's.(2) Jo bought an updated, huge map of the USA the other day and in scanning it, I  noticed in the Boone area of the Iowa portion of the map, in small print, it mentioned the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad AND the Mamie Doud Eisenhower birthplace. (3) I notice that the Optimist Club, which puts the U.S. flag in yards in Boone on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans  Day has now decided to include 911 Day also. For a reasonable yearly fee, they will put a nice flag in your yard from dawn to dusk on those days. (4) The other day on television, an older gentleman was being interviewed and, after being complimented on his youthful appearance, he replied, "there are three stages of life...….youth, middle age and "you're lookin' good."

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Gretchen Leininger, 91, Boone...…….Douglas Anderson, 74, Stratford. Born in Boone. ISU grad. Navy Vet. Married Susan Stumbo in Ogden. GOOD NEWS

Wonderful news. On occasion, there have been rumors about the future of the Thursday edition of the Boone News Republican. Now, a positive statement has been issued to BNR patrons. It states that the Thursday edition will continue and, in fact, a Boone based editor has been hired and soon, some of the typical features of a hometown paper...….police, fire reports  etc.....will be reinstated. That's great news and we look forward to these improvements.

STILL UNDER DURESS

The Kornerman is still fighting computer problems. We're trying to do this on Jo's laptop. Hopefully??
K-----K
When reviewing the business climate recently, I left out Verizon. They are building on the south part of the old Fareway Instructional  Center. The new Nerem Insurance  and Bacon Jewelry are just north of them.
As  mentioned earlier, Kum and Go is no longer in town.....as Kum  and Go. Their logos etc.  have come down and  whoever is taking over, is proceeding in business but when no indentification signs yet.
K-----K
SHORT STUFF: (1) Janelle Henry has moved to Virginia  and lost her Whit's Drive In sloppy joe recipe enroute. She wonders if anyone has  it? I think the Kornerman may have it, but I'm not in a position right now to secure it. (2) Someone recalled the old Boone Soap Box Derby.....on Story Street between Sixth and Seventh Streets. They thought the Sellers boys, Tom and whoever, built a  car that  was sort  of a "green box." It was described  as  a "big  deal," sponsored by Derby folks from Akron, OH. (3) A Merry Christmas  greeting was  received from the Kueck's of Minneapolis....a nice pix of the couple included. John wrote, "after  42 years in  the computer business and this digital age of social media where I am on Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram, I am sending an electronic Christmas card to wish you a Merry Christmas. John says he still  runs but has retired from actual racing. The family of 15 will be at their daughter's house in Farmington on Christmas Day. He  concluded, "I thoroughly enjoy your blog. You do a great service for the Boone community and "us alumni."' (4) Mike Sundall of Cedar Rapids wonders if there is any Boone connection/chapter in the Naples/Ft. Meyers, FL area. He wrote, "anybody know any people from Boone, besides Larry Land, that lives in that area. Would be fun to get a Boone group together." (5) Thanks to Kathleen  Wheelock for the Christmas E card.
K-----K
Speaking  of providing service to the community, our coffee group is very concerned about how,  we in Boonetown, are going to communicate as we lose our News  Republican. We think its a  foregone conclusion that our Thursday newspaper will soon be gone and what  little Boone news  is provided will be part of the Ames Tribune and they will make an effort to switch BNR subscribers to the Tribune.
Even now, communication is a real problem. KWBG makes a good effort but ordinary, every day events that are happening, get very limited  or no coverage, citizens are unaware of important gatherings coming  up and many times, obituaries and, even services and burial, come and go before anyone, other than family members, know about them.
Seems like a real problem and maybe one that the Chamber should study for possible answers. Perhaps some kind of a community calendar that would be available in a known location available to everyone??
K-----K
BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Loren Frazier informs of the death of 1961 Boone Sacred Heart graduate, Bill Ryan. His  sister, Ruth, contacted Loren with the  news that Bill had collapsed and could not be revived Sunday. There's also a surviving  sister, Eileeen Ryan VanderMeers and  Bill's  wife, Ruth...…...Juel Haaland, 93, Madrid Home. Formerly of Boone. Was circulation manager for the Des Register in Boone for many years. Did some writing for the Boone News Republican as well. Several children survive, including Martha Ahrens  of Boone. A brother and step children also survive...…..Dave Reed, 75, Boone. BHS-62. Served in the Iowa National Guard for six years. Several jobs....J.C. Penney, John Clark  Realty, Pritchard Brothers, Fishers Shoe, Dad and Lad and Bohlen Real Estate, which is now Nerem Real Estate. He also had his own downtown security service, checking store doors etc. each night. And, he was a Boone County Supervisor for 20 years. He married Patricia (Blomgren) in 1985 but they divorced. Patricia had two children, son Troy and daughter Angie Carswell. Dave remained close to his step daughter, Angie, and her  husband, Joe Carswell,  and the Carswell's three children.

COMPUTER PROBLEMS....PLEASE GO AWAY

The Kornerman is the midst of fighting computer problems so...….first off, I hope I've found a way to send this edition your way. My computer is not acting the way it should  and we're still attempting to find a way to get back to "normal," but with limited success so far.
Both my PC and Jo's lap top have been affected.
Things were sailing along wonderfully until Alliant Energy came into our yard, very briefly, and  a power outage for not more than 15 seconds was the result. Since then, our computers have gone bonkers with those nasty yellow X's and red X's which just won't go away.
Bare with us and...….if the Korner doesn't appear at our usual time...….its probably due to our computer problems. Dang things are wonderful when they work as they're supposed too but a real pain when they don't.
K-----K
Lots of business construction action late this season as attempts are made to advance projects prior to the real winter.
By the way, don't be surprised to hear of some news regarding our two Kum and Go locations. Word is that they have been purchased and will remain operational but under a different name.
Nerem Real Estate has relocated from downtown to a portion of the former Fareway Educational Center on the south side near highway 30. A second portion of that building will be occupied by Bacon Jewelry so two more downtown buildings will, apparently, be emptied.
The new bank, new dental office and an optometric building are underway at the south end of town and Alice's Place, a 50 unit, government backed retirement facility, will be welcoming renters in the coming days.
Things are looking good at the old Redeker's building on South Story. Cement has recently been poured on the north and west sides of the facility and that provides for lots of parking area. The revitalized building has the look of a very nice strip mall and there appears to be room for at least six or more businesses. Lots of rumors floating around about possible renters...…..Goodwill, Dollar Tree, a dance studio, a hair salon, a fast food eating establishment, a sports clothing operation etc. etc. etc.
Then too, FINALLY...….after many promises......it appears there will be a new McDonald's built at the current location starting as soon as February. The current location is 38 years old. Same location but a little different change of direction will be noted.
Boulder's Inn and Suites is well underway and there have been several events in the Fareway Convention area of that new facility.
K-----K
Jo and I have been so impressed with the Optimist Club Avenue of Flags that the Kornerman is going to give it a plug.
We were approached some time ago by that club. For $35 per year, they would install a flag in our yard at dawn until dusk on five holidays...….Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day. We've noticed a few or our neighbors have joined us in securing that service and we've seen a few scattered here and there around town.
They're nice flags and sure enough, early the morning of the holiday, a flag is placed in our yard and at about darkness, it is removed and taken away.
For more info, here are a couple phone numbers......641-485-1040 and 641-870-0190. An address given is 714 5th Street.
K-----K
Thanks to all who sent Thanksgiving greetings. Included were Sharil Morain, Larry Kelley, Barry Wills, John Kueck and Kathleen Wheelock and others.

MORE SNIPPETS

We continue with more snippets from a Community Magazine, circa 1927-28. This Boone based publication boasted over 6,000 subscribers per month and featured lots of stories about the Boone area.
The stories are too lengthy to include in their entirety but we are mentioning some of the things we found interesting and that might provoke some memories for Korner viewers.
For example, in the early days, our community of parks had just one park, Blair Park, which was located near the current location of Boone High School. Memorial Park was added on the north side and then 200 acres, which eventually became the Herman/McHose Park areas, were added.
The cover of the November, 1927 issue featured a picture of that year's BHS football captain, Arthur Arrasmith. Inside was a story about athletics and physical education offered in the Boone school system. Coaches Chick Evans and Larry Evans and Athletic Director J.E. Irwin featured.
Some history of theatre in the Boone community was highlighted in a story. It talks of a Phipps Theatre at Ninth and Keeler Streets managed by Ben Wiley in 1892. That must have been the dad of the Ben Wiley, I, the Kornerman, was familiar with many later years. The younger Ben Wiley was also a theatre/entertainment promoter.
The Boone County Farm Bureau was prominent. They set a state attendance record at a Farm Bureau Directors meeting in 1927.
How about the first vibratory phone in the area. It was an 1878 connection between A.J. Barkley's abstract office and the Boone County Courthouse. The first actual phone conversation took place in W.H. Crooks feed store. There were 74 subscribers in 1882. Later, 4,000 names were listed in a directory and there were 40 phone employees out of the office on Seventh Street.
I bet you didn't know that Abraham Lincoln once owned farm land in Iowa, 120 acres in Crawford County.
The coldest day ever in Iowa? On January 28, 1873, there was a blizzard and at least one thermometer showed 40 degrees below zero.
K-----K
In the last edition, John Humeston, BHS-78, mentioned the passing of Bill "Boom Boom" Brown of football fame.
John  Kueck, BHS-61, filled us in on some details via an obituary that appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Brown was 80 and played 14 seasons in the National Football League, 13 of them with the Minnesota Vikings. He played in three Super Bowls and in four Pro Bowl games and still holds numerous Viking records as a running back.
K-----K
BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Drew Ellen Lorentzen Jones, 75, Chicago/Boone. BHS-60.
.............Evelyn Joyce Marshall Klute, 87, Ames. Formerly of Boone. Married Duane Klute. Seven children survive.........Darrell Leroy Johnson, 74, Webster City/Norwalk. Boone area survivor is a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Johnson of Stratford.

PETE'S TREK IS COMPLETED

World class endurance runner, Pete Kostelnick, BHS-2005, has successfully completed his latest goal.
The son of Boone residents, Charles and Clare Kostelnick, Pete finished his 5,384.3 mile run from Kenai, AK to Key West, Fl. Monday. He averaged 55.3 miles per day on the 97 day, six hour, 57 minute journey.
Clare reported, "I felt compelled to contact you again because you have been there from the beginning. When this kid struggled to finish his first marathon in Washington, D.C., nearly 10 years ago, you covered the story. We are so grateful for the community of Boone for following Pete and encouraging him throughout the run. Many watched as Facebook live covered his arrival in Key West. The Boone Chamber of Commerce even posted the link. I'm hoping Pete will take some time to relax and recover now. Many ask, "what's next?" I don't think I want to know the answer to that!! Thanks for all you do Mo."
Pete, of course, has run numerous endurance running events through the years including a record breaking jaunt from San Francisco to New York City prior to this latest event.

Our mention in the last edition of a tornado that struck Boone on May 21, 1918, brought a response from Mike Loehrer, BHS-64. Mike had a family member involved.
He wrote, "my great grandfather, Johann, and the father of my grandfather, Joseph, was the keeper of the grounds for John Deere in Moline, IL. In 1901, he moved his family, wife and nine children, to Boone; don't know why. His life dream was to own his own greenhouse. He had worked as a carpenter and on the railroad saving his money. He finally began construction of his greenhouse in 1917, near the railroad roundhouse at the east end of Boone. The night before his grand opening, the tornado came through Boone. His greenhouse was completely destroyed and he had no insurance. Shortly thereafter, and I never found out why, he took his family to Spokane, WA. where he is buried. Luckily for me, my grandfather, who was 29 at the time, stayed in Boone. And so it goes."
Mike says he still has a clipping from the Boone News Republican telling this story.

Nice to hear from John Humeston, BHS-78, this week. He wrote, "with the passing of former
Minnesota Viking running back, Bill "Boom Boom" Brown, I recall attending the exhibition basketball game that some Viking team members played at the DMACC gym which was, probably, around the early 1970's. My lasting memory of that night was watching Brown warming up by shooting and sinking numerous shots from center court. They passed out a program and I got a lot of autographs of Viking players but, sadly, that program was lost."
The Kornerman doesn't know if that type of attraction still occurs. I  do remember similar events through the years. If I remember correctly, there was an Iowa version of the famous Harlem Globetrotters featuring a very large ?Bomba Johnson, that appeared here on occasion and yes, there were some pro footballers who played here as well as some senior graduates of the University of Iowa and other state colleges who had just completed their final season and were seeking a few extra dollars.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE

As the Kornerman indicated in the last edition, we have something to offer today that I found very interesting.
A friend had given me a book called, "Community Magazine." Within the magazine are several monthly publications dated 1927 and 1928. It is boasted that over 6,000 citizens subscribed to these monthly magazines.
Advertisements of Boone area businesses are prevalent and we found some of the stories included very lengthy but very interesting.
We, of course, cannot reprint the stories in their entirety but we will give our Korner readers an idea of some to the material covered.
We will mention some items this time and some more in future Korner editions.
Hopefully, some of the mentions may provide some memories.
     Away we go.
There was a story about pioneer Boone jeweler E.E. Chandler, a 57 year businessman and a story about Rocho Brothers ice plant.
The Boone Community School Board, in May of 1927, authorized the installation of a Boone Junior College. Tuition was set at 50-cents per semester or $1.00 for the entire year. At that time, there were just 12 public junior colleges in Iowa and eight private ones. The first was located at Mason City in 1918.
Boone County's only woman undertaker at that time was Elsie Lawrence and she had her funeral home at 728 Linn Street.
Lulu Cummings was a well known West Boone hardware store dealer and the Mayor of Boone was Robert McBirnie.
A story highlighted the Ledges State Park and a story told of the May 21, 1918, tornado that ripped across the territory.
There was a story that proclaimed, "Blacksmithing was a lost art" and  another story indicated that land back in1855 sold for $3.50 an acre.
A July 4th celebration was held in 1854 at Pilcher's Grove. There were rules. No firecrackers, no shooting gallery, merry go round, ice cream or iced drinks. However, there was a barbeque and free dinner at noon. Later, a young boy recited the Declaration of Independence.
A story told of Arthur D. Lantz American Legion Post members cutting trees for building their log cabin at the northwest corner of Boone and 20th streets. That was in 1926.
That's enough for this time but we have more of this in coming editions.

The couple had settled in Ogden in 1986............Evelyn June Dyer, 83, Story City. Formerly of Boone. She married Gene Dyer and they lived in Ames, Boone, Adel, Roland and Story City at various times. SOMETHING NEW COMING

Looking ahead, starting in the Saturday edition, I think viewers will enjoy some mention of items that appear in a Boone Community Magazine that the Kornerman recently received from a friend.
Lots of good Boone area historical information that I think you will find interesting.
We received a copy of this magazine, circa 1927-28, which had a circulation of over 6,000 copies. It contains several monthly editions of the magazine.
We can't print complete stories, which are quite lengthy, but we can post some highlights that should entertain some interest.
K-----K
Some thoughts from Vern Modeland, BHS-50. He wrote, "who can remember -- I'm sure to never forget -- the stories of fall's arrival the way it was in the 20's? My father, Lloyd, and his brothers, Fred, Lee and Raymond, used to welcome the chill, the leaden skies and the healthy ringing sound of big bells, instead of moaning horns along the C&NW right-of-way. The stories of how it used to be began to unfold too. One popular story with my family was, "when it rained steadily and the south-bound Canada Geese and other migrating birds mistook all that light reflecting from the pavement downtown for water?" "The birds could clog the intersection,"so went the story,"bringing through traffic downtown to a halt." It had to be true, it was in the paper in our town.
K-----K
After reading in the small print, the Boone Community School Board meeting minutes, of their generous contribution, I emailed congratulations to our very strong Korner supporters, John and Susan Kueck, in Minneapolis.
The minutes indicated that approval had been given to the Kueck's to provide a new BHS scholarship to a deserving student.
John replied to my email, "thanks - we are very blessed with the ability to pay back what was a great start that BHS and Boone, in general, through the Boone News Republican and Quinn Wire and Iron Works, experience gave me."
K-----K
Much varied material is available to the Kornerman via the internet and correspondence with numerous Korner viewers.
Can't use all of it, of course, but sometimes a certain piece will catch "special" attention.
The author of the following is unknown:

I remember the corned beef of my childhood,
and the bread we cut with a knife.
When the children helped with the housework,
and the men went to work, not the wife.

The cheese never needed a fridge,
and the bread was so crusty and hot.
     The children were seldom unhappy,
and the wife was content with her lot.

I remember the milk from the bottle,
with the yummy cream on top.
Our dinner came hot from the oven,
and not from a freezer or shop.

The kids were a lot more contented,
they didn't need money for kicks.
Just a game with their friends in the road,
     and sometimes the Saturday flicks

I remember the shop on the corner,
where biscuits for pennies were sold.
Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic?
Or is it, I'm just getting old?

Bathing was done in a wash tub,
with plenty of rich foamy suds.
But the ironing seemed never ending
     as Mum pressed everyone's 'duds.'

I remember the slap on the backside
and the taste of soap if I swore.
Anorexia and diets weren't heard of
and we hadn't much choice what we wore.

Do you think that bruised our ego?
     or our initiative was destroyed?
We ate what was put on the table
and I think life was better enjoyed.

NEWSPAPER TALK

LATE BULLETIN: At Tuesday's District Court hearing concerning the Mamie Dowd Eisenhower home and Boone Count Historical Society, the Korner has been informed there was one major development. Apparently, the lawyers for each side came to an agreement that the home and artifacts pertaining to the home will not be for sale, at least, at the present time.
At this time, no word has been received concerning the state audit of the Society that was called for recently by Boone Mayor John Slight.
K-----K
Richard Longworth, BHS-53, has responded to the mention in the last edition of Storm Lake newspaper icon, Art Cullen. Dick wrote, "thanks for the good piece on Art Cullen, the Pulitzer-Prize-winning editor and columnist for the Storm Lake Times, and for comparing the success of that amazing paper to the fate of our Boone News Republican, where you and I once labored in better days. I spent some time in Storm Lake when I was doing my book on the Midwest and I got to know Art, who knew his town inside out and was a terrific asset to it. Storm Lake is a meatpacking town with lots of Mexican immigrants, most of them from the same Mexican town, Santa Rita. On his own dime, Art went to Santa Rita and did long articles on the place, telling Storm Lake readers where their new neighbors came from and why they left. That's just plain good journalism."
Dick added, "Storm Lake is smaller than Boone and much less prosperous. How can it support not one, but two twice-weekly papers, one of them a Pulitzer winner, when Boone, apparently, can't support one that even pretends to cover the town? The secret is that the Times is locally-owned by Art and his family, and so, is really committed to the community. It still gets a lot of local advertising. And mostly, it's necessary, even if it routinely steps on important local toes. You don't know what's going on in Storm Lake unless you read the Times. In return, the town supports it and as Art said in that Minneapolis Star Tribune piece you mentioned, "Unless communities support journalism, all the prizes in the world are worth what you can melt them down for." Maybe Boone isn't interested in supporting good journalism, and has got the paper - the BNR - that it deserves. I wonder if there's anybody in town with the funds and patience to start a good paper, knowing they'll probably lose both money and friends? Not easy. But necessary."
Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, also remembers Art Cullen. He wrote, "I know Art well. He was a student at Storm Lake St. Mary's when I was there and his brother was a good basketball player for me. I've followed Art's career somewhat. Opinionated? I should say so."
The Kornerman adds, "I've always understood that some blame for the BNR's demise does lie with a lack of support from subscribers and advertisers. HOWEVER, my main claim, in recent years, since the Schaub's sold the paper, is that no solid effort has been made to provide good enough local news coverage, the type that would entice both more subscribers and advertisers."
K-----K
Let's change course with a little humor. A look at some business signs.
On a muffler shop "No appointment needed. We hear you coming."
In a veterinarian's waiting room, "Be back in five minutes. Sit. Stay."
On a Septic Tank truck, "Yesterday's Meals on Wheels."
On a plumbers truck. "We repair what your husband fixed."
On an electrician's truck. "Let us remove your shorts."
     Then too.......did you ever wonder......
Why abbreviation is such a long word?
Why is it doctor's call what they do, "practice?"
Why is the guy who invests your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called a "rush hour?"

Former Boone resident, Jacques Welin, 90, BHS-46, passed away a few months ago down south. It has now been learned that he will be buried beside his wife, Marilyn Lister Welin, at Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone this Saturday, October 27. A service will be held at Stark Welin at 2 p.m., followed by the burial.
BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Ardeth Nadine Chesnut, 95, Boone........David Smelcer, 68, Zearing. Formerly of Boone. A truck driver. Boone area survivors include his mother, Adeline Hilts, and four children........Donnie Green, 66, Fraser. He married Julie Wilson and they were later divorced. He worked at the turkey processing plant in Ellsworth and was a truck driver. Boone area survivors include his long time companion, Susan Drake, of Fraser, a daughter, Monica Green, and  son, Kurtis Green, both of Boone.  Also surviving are two sisters, including Tina Myers  of Boone and Susan Drake's sons, Zach and Jake Kochel, both of Boone........Bonnie Kruse Kingsbury, 89, Boone. HEARING SET FOR TUESDAY

Here's the latest on the Boone County Historical Society fiasco.
As you, perhaps, know, four Boone residents have filed suit in District Court asking for answers to many questions concerning the operation of the Society.
On Tuesday, October 23, that quartet, and many others, will have their initial day "in court."
They are asking their supporters to be there as "respectful" observers, not really knowing how long the hearing will last. Maybe an hour, perhaps the entire day.
Those planning to attend are asked to arrive no earlier than 8:45 a.m. but are also warned that late arrivals may not be admitted.
K-----K
The Kornerman saw a familiar face on Des Moines television recently.
Mike Wallace, BHS-77, the son of Hank and Rosie Wallace, was being interviewed as an official of the Dallas County Conservation Commission.
I recognized him right away.......reminded me a lot of former Boone County Sheriff, Hank.
The interview had something to do with some trails in Dallas County.
K-----K
An item sent to the Korner by Karen Anderson couldn't have been more timely. When Karen saw it in a Sunday newspaper she said, "I thought of you."
It was a story written by Stephen Lyons and appeared in the Minneapolis/St Paul Star Tribune and was all about Art Cullen of Storm Lake, a small town newspaper owner/publisher, who is a recent Pulitzer Prize winner. He was cited in 2017 for his editorial writing in the Storm Lake Times, a twice-weekly paper with a circulation of 3,000.
Cullen's sharp opinions often draw the ire of politicians of both parties. A Republican member of the Board of Supervisors was quoted as saying, "if Art says "do something" we'll do the opposite" and when the award to Cullen was announced, a Democratic member of the Board said, "I guess if you tell lies long enough, they become the truth in  the mind of the teller."
Anyway, much of the story tells of Cullen's take on the demise of newspapers and general downward trajectory of many rural Midwestern cities.
P.S. His newspaper's motto is, "Print the truth and raise hell."
K-----K
That certainly brings to mind the current status of the demise of our own Boonetown newspaper.
The end of a REAL local newspaper is at hand.
The Thursday only edition of the Boone News Republican is still available but, as noted in the most recent editions, any notion of REAL Boone news has disappeared. Some obituaries are still available but not much else. In fact, for quite some time, there hasn't even been a Boone-based Managing Editor.
Those in charge have been obvious in their pushing of a Mid-Iowa newspaper. Our latest Boone edition provided front page stories of some vandalism in Ames, some future planning of the Roland-Story school board and the fact that Energy Secretary Rick Perry visited the Ames laboratory.
Inside pages featured Nevada, Woodward and Perry news.
If I were a bit younger, the old Kornerman would, somehow, pick up the "mantle" and in these pages or some other venue, attempt to provide some REAL Boone news.

WONDERFUL HONORS

One of the joys of my long media life is reporting great things about good Boone connected people.
I have a couple such items to mention today, items that will be lucky to find themselves in print in the Boone News Republican, which no longer supplies much Boone news.
Congratulations to Joe Smith, CEO of the Boone County Hospital. At the organizations annual meeting recently, he received the Iowa Hospital Association Excellence in Leadership Award.
That honor is given to an individual who is an Iowa hospital or health system executive who shows achievement in Iowa state and national health care affairs, in addition to showing leadership among their peers and contributions to their community in general.
Then too, former Boone resident, Wyatt Chidester, has been honored after completing 39 years of service in the United States Navy.
Wyatt's parents, his dad, John, and step-mom Sharon Jones Chidester, current Boone residents, attended the retirement ceremony in Florida, October 5.
Wyatt enlisted in the service in 1979 and moved forward in a superlative career.
After serving as an enlisted man for 12 years and achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer, he was commissioned as a limited duty officer (LDO) ensign in October of 1991 and converted to an unrestricted line officer in 1996.
Wyatt spent some of his early years in Boone but graduated from Spirit Lake High School, Spirit Lake, Iowa.

REVIEWING A CLASS REUNION

Loren Frazier, BHS-58, gives Korner viewers a report on the recent 60th class reunion.
Loren wrote, "I must say, our 60 year class reunion was an outstanding success. We had a bigger turnout than at the last two reunions and everyone I talked to, told me what a great time they were having. I'm sure that I speak for all those who attended when I say, "Thank You" to all those who worked to set up  the reunion. You did a great job. I don't know the exact number of attendees, but there were over 70 classmates and spouses at both the evening at the Tic Toc and the evening at Boulders Inn and Suites. I didn't make it back for the first night, at Boone Valley Brewery, but I understand there was a good crowd there also. I made a quick count of the number of classmates in the group picture the night of the dinner at Boulders. I counted 41. The total count of classmates for the reunion is slightly higher than that, as there were a few classmates that went to the first and/or second night at the Boone Valley Brewery and the Tic Toc but I didn't make it to the night at Boulders where the picture was taken. As you may recall, some of our classmates and spouses went to Branson for a 75th birthday celebration in 2015. Some of us are now talking about having an 80th birthday celebration in 2020. The destination for that party is tentatively set as Nashville, TN.. And, we are, of course, already looking forward to our class 65th year reunion in 2023 in Boone.

Tom Peterson, BHS-67, has a "Mamie" story to relate.
He wrote, "my Mamie story, from long ago, was when she visited Boone. I think her uncle, Joel Carlson, and I were running a Vermeer stump cutter for Jack Stanley's Tree Service, cutting out a good sized elm tree stump. The black suit, well dressed secret service guys walked over and watched the process. They asked me several questions about what I was doing and the Dutch Elm disease that was killing all the huge trees. They disappeared after a minute. Then later, Mamie came to see the work for a couple minutes. Didn't talk to her at all but she was a very well dressed lady and was wearing a hat. Back in the day eh...."

RECALLING MAMIE'S VISIT

Nancy Jo Smith Bluhm, BHS-54, from out in Pennsylvania, recalled a surprise "sighting" she had of Mamie Eisenhower.
Nancy wrote, "I haven't written for a long time but I read all of the Kelley's Korners. I haven't lived in Boone for many years but I'm proud of our little town. I have lived in Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, West Germany and now Pennsylvania. When someone asks where I'm from, I always say Iowa where Mamie Eisenhower was born. After all, she came to Boone and we saw both Ike and Mamie more than once. When I was at Boone High, I helped in the nurses office with Mrs.Carlson, Mamie's aunt. Later, I became a nurse and worked at the Boone County Hospital. Mrs. Carlson was a patient in our hospital and suddenly one day, all these secret service men were wandering around. Then, Mamie suddenly appeared. She had come to visit her aunt, Carolyn. What a day it was. Exciting for me and everyone else."

Larry Paulsen, BHS-61, wrote from California. "in going through some old family items I found this 1942 article from the Boone News Republican giving an account of my dad's encounter with some Ames sports fans. Both of the officers named in the article would go on to become Chief of the Boone Police Department but the subject contact does not show them in their best moment."
The news article headline banner was, "Whitewash on Cop's Shoes."
The story related that some Ames boosters arrived in town about 9 p.m. with the intention of painting some streets near Boone High School. The Boone police, who might have been expecting some such activity, were close by and one carload was stopped at Fourth and Crawford by officers Lawrence Paulsen and Edward "Pete" Peterson. While questioning some of the car's occupants, officer Paulsen felt something bothering his shoe. One of the visitors had calmly painted the shoe with whitewash. Needless to say, the visitors lost their paint brush and a bucket of whitewash. No charges were mentioned in the story.
Larry concluded his remarks with, "wouldn't it be nice if the Boone/Ames rivalry was still ongoing and this intense?"
K-----K
On his latest run, former Toreador Pete Kostelnick, BHS-2005, is about aS close to "home" as he will be during his marathon jaunt from Kenai, Alaska to Key West, Florida.
The run began on August 1 and over 5,000 miles will be covered by the time he reaches Key West.
The last three days he's run from Morton, MN to Mankato, from Mankato to Albert Lea and from Albert Lea to Floyd, MN. That latest run covered 63.4 miles to bring his total so far to 3,571.5 miles.
Pete's parents, Charles and Clare Kostelnick, live in Boone.

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS

They've had some struggles the last two seasons but prior to that, everyone in Iowa knew about the strength of the Madrid High School football program. State championships and runnerup finishes, for a time, were common.
Most recently, the late Randy Hinkel was the coach who guided those powerful Madrid teams. However, the Kornerman is going many years beyond the Hinkel seasons.......back to the 50's and 60's.
At that time, I was the Sports Editor of the Boone News Republican and I have fond memories of some great Tiger teams of those years.
The head coach at that time was John Mills. John was a graduate of Redfield High School and a Navy vet. After his service time, he graduated from Simpson College with a teaching degree. At Simpson, he was a small college All-American football player and he is an inductee of the Simpson College Hall of Fame.
In addition to Madrid, he was a teacher/coach at Panora, Griswold, Pleasant Valley and Saydel. He retired in 1989. Eventually, he was installed in the Iowa Baseball Hall of Fame and the Iowa High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
In addition to being an outstanding coach, he was one of the state's top baseball umpires, not only in high school but at the collegiate level in the Big Ten, Iowa and Big Eight Conferences.
Oh, how the Kornerman remembers those great Mills coached Madrid teams.......Denny Ford and many other outstanding Tiger athletes groomed by Coach John Mills. That was before the state playoffs were installed in 1972. Nevertheless, Coach Mills and his teams were very well known and admired throughout the state.
John passed away in Ankeny at age 91, September 20. He and his wife, Carolyn Killan, were blessed with six children. Carolyn has passed away but his children, three boys and three girls, survive.
 K------K
BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: LaVerne Leininger, 97, Boone. He was a Boone County farmer and a corn sheller for well over 40 years. He married his wife, Chloe, in 1944 in Boone.
She passed away last year. In 1969, the couple quit farming and moved to Boone. Five children survive, two boys and three girls..........Charlene Crocheck, 77, Boone. She married Raymond Crocheck  in Boone in 1965. She worked at Hach Chemical and Holub Greenhouse. Her husband and two sons survive, including, Justin, of Boone.........Roger Schoelkoph, 98, Boone. A resident of the Eastern Star Home.

NO END IN SIGHT

A majority of the Korner's viewers reside away from their hometown and may not be aware of an unfortunate community problem.
It involves a longtime Boone staple, the Boone County Historical Society.
Perhaps there were problems before, but a severe eruption seemed to coincide with the arrival of Mara MacKay as the Society's Executive Director. Ms. MacKay forged an extremely aggressive agenda that pleased some but angered many others.
Eventually, a decision by her and her Board of Directors to close the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace was too much for some community members, including some lifetime members of the society, to accept. As they studied and questioned those plans, disagreements about other administrative decisions were also scrutinized.
Along the way, several meetings have been held in an effort to bring the two groups together. One group that supports the recent direction of the Society and those who oppose the way things have developed.
In two words, the meetings got "pretty nasty" and very little, in either direction, was actually accomplished.
Both the Boone City Council and the Boone County Board of Supervisors have determined not to provide annual funding to the Society under the prevailing situation and that has always been a main source of the society's revenue.
In addition, Boone's Mayor, John Slight, called for a state audit of the Society which is, apparently, still underway.
That lack of city/county funding has curtailed the Society's functions to a point that their board felt it necessary to sell the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace as a way of securing much needed funding. A realtor was secured and, at least for a time, the birthplace was listed "for sale."
Here's the latest: Four members of the Boone Community, Sally Courter, Kevin Miles, Joan Logsdon Hamilton and Linda Millis, have filed a lawsuit in District Court against the Society.
Dating back to 2016, they are asserting that the Society has been mismanaged, violated Iowa codes, its own by-laws and has terminated memberships, including lifetime memberships, for those speaking out against the organization and its recent policies.
The proposed selling of the birthplace property without open community input is also questioned. Thus, the plaintiffs in the case are asking for a temporary injunction to halt any such sale while the lawsuit is going through the court process.

Time is drawing near for a pair of class reunions.
The 1983 classes will meet this weekend, September 28-29, for their 35th bash.
Then, in the next week, the classes of 1958 will have their 60th get-together, October 2-4.
On Tuesday night, the group will have exclusive use of the Boone Valley Brewery. Wednesday night its on to the Tic Toc restaurant and on Thursday night, October 4, a catered dinner will be served in the convention center of the new Boulders Inn and Suites.

The Kornerman posted some Scrabble rousers in the last edition and questioned, "who sits around trying to figure these things out?"
Vern Modeland, BHS-50, replied, "it's easy, Mo. Like;   BOONE  ONE BO?

WE GOT MAIL

Heard from a pair of long time Korner viewers this week.
From John Kueck, BHS-61, "I'll offer my view of the reduced input to your column from my personal viewpoint. As a semi-frequent commenter, I find myself running out of input. On occasion, a new subject triggers a comment from me. I expect others have a similar situation. Betty Mae Harris triggered some memories, but I was too busy to comment (another excuse). What I remember was a group of moms who conspired to have their sons take ballroom dance lessons. I was one of the victims. After some dance instructions, the boys lined up on one side and the girls on the other and then you chose a partner. I wonder if anyone else remembers this?"
Vern Modeland, BHS-50, said, "it all depends on from where and how you look at Boone to see what's going on. Ye of lesser time note that the obituaries show a graduation date from dear old BHS as maybe the 70's, or even the 60's for those "old timers." But, there are those of us loosely organized as expatriates who can tell you about bobsledding on the snowy streets in the 1940's, pulled behind someone's family car, which was, perhaps, a Hudson or a Terraplane (the Needhams had a nifty green one with automatic shift). I'll bet those class of 60/70 somethings don't even get out in local bad weather, unless its to hop a plane to Aspen or wherever, to see snow. But, know that we expatriates are watching you, hovered over our laptops from expatriate-land, which includes Tejas and other Gulf Coast corners.....or even the Ozarks, where winter seldom comes. Don't call us gone yet!"

Also educated at the University of Arizona and the University of Southern California graduate school. Taught in the San Diego school system for nine years and then entered the real estate business. SLOW TIMES

We, the Korner, have been there before and we're there again........engulfed by a very slow period. Viewers have, no doubt, noticed all we've had to offer the last edition or two were death updates. We're happy to provide this service......which is almost non-existent anywhere else locally......but we also like to relive viewers stories and memories of the past or local news of the present.
In a recent email, RaeAnn Clark, BHS-70, gave her explanation of why we may have these slow times.
RaeAnn wrote, "its easy to click on Kelley's Korner if you have it bookmarked, which I do and I'm sure many others do also. So, you do get many hits to show that people are reading it. But, to respond, one has to go to their email and try to type in your address and then type what they want to share. Unless someone is sitting at a computer to type, it is not so easy. As people get older and use their phones or hand computers, they tend to read stuff and just answer quick responses, not get into typing a lot because the print is small and the fingers don't always work as well. But they LOVE to read the blog to remember Boone and the goings on. And, to find out who died since we can't depend on the local newspaper for that. You like doing your blog and people like reading it but for many, its extra steps to respond to you and it may be more difficult for some to do that. This technology is, sometimes, hard to keep up with."
Thanks RaeAnn. You've probably made some accurate observations there.
K-----K
We heard from Bill Olson, BHS-62, and he was sending some information on someone he remembers from his days growing up in Boonetown.
He recalled knowing a Joe B. Wells, BHS-13, and was seeking more information about him.
The Kornerman replied that I remembered Joe. B. Wells who was a World War II Prisoner of War, was the Boone Postmaster for a time and was married to Monica Wells.
Bill replied that the timeline didn't seem correct and the Kornerman did some further research.
I found two Joe B. Wells. The one I was referring to was a BHS-38 grad as compared to the one who graduated in  1913, the one Bill, initially, was talking about.
I guess I'll assume there were two Joe B. Wells, probably a father/son combination.

Business Update: (1) Bomgaars is now occupying the old Walmart building and it is open for inspection. An official grand opening will be coming early next month. The new Boulder's motel/convention center has been open for business for a few weeks now. (2) Progress is showing on various projects as builders attempt to wrap things up while summer weather is still available. Included are the new Iowa Bank, a dental office and the renovation of the old Redeker's building.
(3) Word on the street is that a "Sale Pending" sign is now visable on the now departed Peoples Clothing store.

A few weeks ago, Mark Moorman wondered if we had any information regarding a reunion of the 1968 Toreador football team. At that time, we had no such info. However, Roger Martin told the Kornerman the other day that, "yes, there will be a reunion of that team the weekend of September 28-29," which jibes with the 2018 BHS homecoming weekend.
Martin said that Jim Jewett would be back from California for the event and many other team members are also expected.
That team had a 7-0-1 record. The tie was a season opening 32-32 draw with Ames. The team averaged 34 points a game in  surging to the conference championship.

Things that are important for you to know: (1) It takes six months to build a Rolls Royce but only 13 hours to build a Toyota. (2) It takes 20 minutes for your brain to know that your stomach is full. (3) There are 43,252,003,274,489, 856,000 possible Rubic's Cube combinations. (4) A one-minute kiss burns 26 calories.
Then too, a few observations: (1) health nuts are going to feel stupid some day lying in a hospital dying of nothing. (2) In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now, the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.
