A LIGHT LOAD

Bill Olson, BHS-62, is looking for some help.
He wrote from Blairsville, GA, "please ask your readers out there in Boone land if  anyone has a contact for Chuck McCubbins, BHS-59. Also looking for all those who wore the old Toreador outfit. I know Kenny Hartman did in 62-63. Also the where abouts of the outfit and any other such data."
The Kornerman says, "hey,  that's a good subject. I can recall a couple of those Toreadors who still live right here in good old Boonetown."

BOONE WELCOME TRAIN

It wasn't the Pufferbilly parade......it just had that feel.......minus a marching band.
A crowd of wide-eyed youngsters and lots of oldsters, many retaining a railroad DNA, crowded the way as the Boone Rotary Club's long awaited Welcome Train completed a solid 3-mile journey from its former home base at 11th and Division to its new location, the northeast corner of the South Story/Highway 30 intersection, Wednesday/Thursday.
A passenger car and coal tender, after much coaxing, made the trip Wednesday and the historic steam locomotive followed on Thursday.
How often in this world can a community brag about watching a 300,000 pound steam engine travel down it's main drag? Its half a football field long and seems almost that high.
Some three, maybe four years or longer ago, the Boone Rotary Club sought some type of "one of a kind" project  to celebrate the club's centennial celebration and " to give back to the Boone community."
Its no secret. Boone has always been tabbed a railroad community and Dave Cook, one of the Rotarians who helped spearhead the project, explained, "many Iowans associate Boone with trains, railroad history, and the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad. This welcome train builds on that long established railroad connection."
It was expected that the steam engine move would be the most challenging but, actually, it was the passenger car/coal tender move.....or quick lack thereof, that provided the most angst. Due to various load problems, the start time Wednesday was long delayed. In fact, those two cars were not in place in South Boone until 2 p.m. or so Thursday morning.
Thursday, enroute, a few tree branches needed cutting and various wires needed elevating but "the big boy" moved right along at kind of a steady snail's pace and completed its trip without incident.
This weekend promises all those involved, and there were many, some R and R and the promise of renewed "breath."
So, things are in place. However, there's more to be done.
The Rotary Club will continue fundraising, so a walkway around the train, some lighting and landscaping can be added. There are also plans for a way of providing visitor information and even donor recognition.
In addition, sometime this summer, "Welcome to Boone" will be painted on the tender and the locomotive will receive its final paint and seal coat.
By the way, that former caboose, located a bit further north on South Story, that acted as an information center, is on its way to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Its been sold.
Anyone wishing to contribute to this continuing project can mail a tax deductible donation to Rotary Welcome Train, P.O. Box 532, Boone, IA 50036. And, if you choose to do so, you might mention you heard about it via Kelley's Korner.
You out-of-town visitors will be surprised and impressed next time you're here by our new entrance to your "home" community.

CATCHIN' UP: (1) Joyce McPherson Jensen, BHS-55, appreciated the Bumble B clipping we sent regarding her basketball prowess. "That was one I'd never seen," she claimed. (2) It must be time to renew memberships to the Boone County Historical Society.....at least we received our new form. For individuals, the fee is $25, $40 for families and $75 for businesses and organizations. The address is Boone County Historical Society, Box 172, Boone, Iowa 50036. They also have some special offers you may wish to inquire about. Phone 515-432-1907. P.S. It was nice to hear that the Boone City Council, at their last meeting, released $4.000 to the Historical Society. The funding had been on "hold" for quite some time while the Society was going through its changes/litigations etc. (3) This pandemic time, with its much slower opportunities for activity,  is a good time to renew those relationships that you've been "too busy" to acknowledge for some time. The Kornerman has mentioned that I've been doing that......catching up with viewers/friends that I haven't touched base with for some time. I mentioned some I've contacted with in the last edition. Since then, I've talked by phone to my 30-year IHSAA co-worker, Ruth Ingalls, BHS-47, another co-worker, Rick Wulkow, and to Bob Fisher, BHS-46. I hope they enjoyed the renewal as much as I did. (4) Something happened last Tuesday, July 21, 2020, that will never happen again in any of our lifetimes. In military time, at 8:20.20 p.m., Tuesday, it was 20:20:20; 2020.

K-----K
The last two editions, with much help, we've talked about and straightened out questions about some Reed families, especially those who, specifically, claimed a Don Reed as a member. So, we're done with that story right? WRONG!
Our supposed finality on the subject has been jolted by an email from Jim Seitz, BHS-73, who wrote, "I need your help with a memory check. I wasn't familiar with the Don Reed's mentioned in the Korner, but wasn't there a Don Reed in the 60's who was the Boone Community School District's superintendent, maybe the predecessor to Don Riemenschneider?"
You viewers may think we're upset that Jim has "kept this thing going." No way. In fact, we're excited about it and thank Jim for persisting. So many times, like this, one mention will lead to another and before you know it......we have an entire new set of story ideas that evolve.
That's what keeps the Korner "klickin."
After a bit of research, we have determined that Jim is talking about Harland Reed, who guided the Boone school's elementary program for several years. Retired elementary principal Daryl Boelman told the Kornerman, "it was Harland who hired me."
So Jim was right and he was wrong and the Kornerman thanks him for leading us into some new directions.
Don Seaton had a long career as BHS Superintendent, 1950-69, prior to retirement. Riemenschneider replaced him in 1970. Regarding principals in the 60's, Glenn Moore was Seaton's right hand man from 1960-63 and, in fact, was his principal in the 50's as well.
W.H. Flamme was here as high school principal for just one year, 1964. Ed Barker served that position from 1965-68 and was followed, for a short time, by Remy, who then moved into the superintendency in '70. Virgil Hudson was Remy's first principal and he remained in that position into the 70's.
Jim Seitz said Reminschneider, Hudson and Don Green, a Boone Junior High Principal, were all neighbors of his on Southeast Linn and Reed was just a block away on Prairie Ave.
K-----K
It makes the Kornerman nervous when I notice that some viewers seem to suddenly disappear.
As a result, I've been making some personal contacts, just to make sure everything is alright.
I've talked to Mel Murken, BHS-59, and Gretchen Kinter Stark, BHS-52, on the phone and communicated with Andy Anderson, BHS-62, Michael Goodwin, BHS-63, Patty Harris, BHS-79, and former BHS football coach, John Burke via email. There are others who have not yet responded, so I remain somewhat nervous.
Speaking of John Burke, he succeeded Don Ringgenberg as Toreador football coach for one season, 1977. John Walczyk followed in 1978.
The Kornerman got to be pretty good friends with Burke and I have closely followed his career. He was just one of those individuals who, although very young at the time, seemed destined for great success. He had all the positive attributes.
He left Boone to become the high school football coach at Windsor HS in Colorado and in four years, that school, which had never made the playoffs, became a state championship team. John then moved to Douglas County HS in Castle Rock, CO. and took a program, that had never won more than two games in a season, to three state playoff games.
John eventually became an athletic director, missed coaching and went to Moon Valley HS in Phoenix, where he was AD/football coach that took four teams to the state playoffs.
In addition to all that, he was the Executive Director of the Colorado High School Coaches Association and was asked to conduct NIKE football camps in Denver for 20 years and Las Vegas for 13 years.
Quite a successful career it has been and the Kornerman is not surprised.

BIG NEWS: Loren Frazier, BHS-58, sent an email to 34 classmates who, earlier, had expressed an interest in a Class of 58-80th Birthday Celebration. Due, probably, to the pandemic, only nine responded. Also, Loren suddenly realized that the Super National races were scheduled for the same week the celebration was originally planned.
With the low turnout/interest and the conflict with racing, Loren said he was ready to call the party "over." However, he then received an idea from a classmate, who suggested a gathering at the Ledges State Park.
Loren said, "I thought it was a good idea so we're now planning a lunch gathering, one day, the 24th of September." However, it will be at the pavilion in Herman Park and Loren has it reserved for 7 A.M. to 3 p.m.. He said, "I think 11:30 a.m. would be a good start time  and to start the visiting. Those that want to, can bring their own food and drink."
He would like to know, in advance, those who plan to attend.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

You will recall the conundrum we faced in the last edition. SOLVED.
Via some great help from viewers, we now know that there were two Donald Reed's, both of similar age and both BHS graduates from the 40's.
The Kornerman was originally "tipped off" by Patty Donovan McDonald, BSH-58, that a Boone native, Donald Reed, 94, had passed away June 1 in Clear Lake.
The Kornerman's first reaction was, "I remember Don Reed from KWBG days."
Wait just a  minute. We have now discovered there were two Don Reed's with similar early backgrounds.
The Don Reed Patty was telling us about was a 1944 BHS grad and 94 years old at his passing. His dad was Clarence Reed and this Don had three brothers and sisters, including well known Boone beautician, Marie Seiler. All of those siblings have also passed away.
Dianna Sutton had a clarifying answer to our Reed mention in last week's Korner. She wrote, "the Don Reed you were thinking of was a classmate of my late husband, Gerald, who was a BHS graduate in 1942. That Don lived in Cedar Rapids, working for Collins Radio, his wife's name was Marilyn and he was related to Annabelle Eckstein and Pearl Scanlon of Boone. He did battle leg injuries from his wartime service and, eventually, had one leg amputated."
The Kornerman had remembered that a Don Reed was an outstanding young baseball pitcher, who had an opportunity to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals. However, during service time in the 40's, he suffered serious leg injuries. I remember him as the very first KWBG Sports Reporter when the station opened in 1950."
Vern Modeland, BHS-50, a KWBG alum, also chimed in. He wrote, "you remember the same Don Reed I do. He read sports on KWBG on the night shift and I admired so much, how, with his leg injuries, he could sprint down the hall to the teletype machine during a commercial break. I recall that he was a Marine who got hit by machine gun fire on an island in the Pacific. In addition to sports reporting, he was a very good salesman for the station."
So, there you have it. The more accurate tale of two Don Reed's, thanks to the efforts of Patty, Dianna and Vern.

Next up! We're digging deep into some material that we've received (most of it some time ago) that, until now, has been ignored.
     (1) Regarding our recent mention of the lack of Dish TV coverage of Cubs baseball, Mark Campbell, BHS-67, dove in. He wrote, "the Cubs are emulating the LA Dodgers TV deal. Its been quite controversial in LA, just as its been in Chicago. I've even seen some posts from disgruntled Cub fans that they'll switch to the White Sox." (2) We watched "Wheel of Fortune" last Wednesday night because we had been told it featured a Boone native, Brandy Holmes. It was fun to see. She mentioned she was a former Iowan, but did not mention Boone. She had a great night with something like $60,000 in winnings. Actually, it was a rerun of a program originally seen in 2017. Some of her family members were on hand but the Kornerman has no information regarding any of her Boone connections. (3) The mention in a recent edition of Jim Ballantyne's, BHS-77, winning hit in a BHS baseball game provided a memory for Mike Loehrer, BHS-64. He wrote, "I think about playing baseball in Boone quite frequently. I started out as a youngster at the water tower lot on the corner of First and ??. Then came L.L., Babe Ruth, BHS, college and semi-pro ball with the Boone Falcons. If any ballplayer wants to better remember those days, I have a suggestion. I've retained every baseball glove I ever had from age six on. Just take a can of leather oil and rub it into the glove. Work it in. Then place your nose into the palm of the mitt and close your eyes. Trust me, when I say the memories will be flooding back with abandon and they're good memories."
The Kornerman says, "oh yes, I can recall that "baseball glove" smell."

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Lalonie Marie Bowen, 73, Ames. Her parents, now deceased, were former Boone residents Harley "Skeeter" and Vera Bowen. Burial in Boone.........Eleanor "Lucy" Hagge, 88, Dayton. Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Dodson, of Boxholm, one brother and three sisters.........Virgil McClain, 92, Fort Dodge. Was born in Boone County. Attended Boone and Rockwell schools. Army vet. Married Marilyn Degan. Was a sales rep for Buttertop and Frito Lay. Survivors include a son, brother, sister and daughter-in-law.
Additional information from earlier reports: Kathleen Wheelock, 72, Boone. Born in Boone, BSH-66. Married Charles "Chuck" Wheelock, BHS-54, in Boone in 1990. Was a volunteer and photographer. Her husband passed in 1999. Survivors include a daughter and two sisters-in-law............Michael Riker, 75, Boone. Born in Boone. BHS-63. Worked for Chicago and Northwestern RR. Was a member of the 1963 BHS Rose Bowl band and for 53 years, was a member of the "chain gang" at Toreador football games. Survivors include a sister, brother and nieces.

AN IMPRESSIVE IMPROVEMENT

You viewers, from "out of town," probably remember when Meyer's Clothing store occupied the corner building, northwest corner of Eighth and Story Street. There was a hobby shop downstairs.
Unfortunately, that entire corner was wiped out via a fire several years ago. After cleanup, it has remained just a "plot of ground," in the midst of downtown Boone.
Thanks to some progressive community members, with help from the Boone Optimist Club and the backing of city officials, that oppressive looking area is suddenly turning into a bright addition to our downtown.
Its been a rather slow process, due mainly to......you guessed it.......adequate funding...... but its really beginning to show its true promise.
In fact, Sunday, a flag raising ceremony was a nice "kickoff" to a more promising future. Some beautiful flag poles were graced with a U.S. flag, state and city flags and even fire department and police department flags.
Sidewalks have been installed, there are some nice benches and landscaping and a small "band shell" type building is under construction.
The hope is that it will eventually become a nice "gathering area" for folks visiting our downtown.
Fourth ward councilman Terry Moorman has been the "top gun" in promoting this project and he tells me they hope to have things pretty well completed by the end of August.
By the way, if anyone would care to donate to this project, you can simply send a donation to the City of Boone, 923 Eighth Street, Attention-Greenspace project, 50036......and, you might mention that you heard about it via the Korner.
K-----K
BREAKING NEWS: Des Moines Area Community College, Boone Campus, has a new head men's basketball coach, the 13th in the school's history.
Brett Putz, a Forest City native, who was an outstanding player at St. Cloud State, will replace Josh Sash, who left after one season as the Bears coach to become an assistant at North Dakota State.
It will be the first top job for Putz who has a long career as an assistant coach at several schools, Chicago State, Omaha, Wayne State and St. Cloud State.
P.S. This news reminds me that the new Toreador boys basketball coach, Rusty Hicks, a Boone native, will become a neighbor of the Kelley's "some day." Just two houses down, there's a lot that the Hicks family has purchased and will build a house on. In fact, preliminary action is underway. I noticed some surveyors are working that lot today.
K-----K
Still on the subject of basketball, the Kornerman has a heavy heart these days. I lost my Boone High School basketball coach the other day. Larry Gillespie, 96, passed away in Des Moines.
Larry came to BHS from Manning as I began my senior season, 1952-53. He was a true gentleman, a strong leader and an excellent coach, a real inspiration. I think about him a lot.
He remained in Boone another year or two before moving on to Des Moines Tech.
K-----K
Unfortunately, there are two more recent deaths that bring a ton of memories to the Kornerman.
Patty Donovan McDonald, BSH-58, sent me a note about the passing of Don Reed, who died at Clear Lake, June 1. Complete details will follow in Boone Connected Deaths.
Whether I need to or not, I'm going to plead a disclaimer here because what I say could be proven wrong.......although I don't think so.
There was a Don Reed, BHS-44, who was an outstanding baseball pitcher and had an opportunity with the St. Louis Cardinals I believe. However, it was wartime and he served in the U.S. Navy. During that service, he suffered some lifelong leg injuries that ended any hopes of playing baseball again.
I can recall a picture of him, behind a microphone, with clear evidence of serious leg damage.
The Don Reed I am thinking of was the first Sports Announcer when KWBG started serving the community, March 2, 1950.
The obituary Patty sent me said he was the last member of the Clarence Reed family. Don had three brothers and three sisters. One sister's name stood out. Marie Seiler was a beautician, I remember, in Boone.
SO, there are several clues that indicate to me that this was the Don Reed I was thinking of. Still, there have been many Don Reed's so......
K-----K
Then too, Tony Riker, BHS-62, informed me of the death of his brother, Mike, 75, BHS-63.
Mike is remembered as a guy that saw lots of touchdowns, fumbles, good weather and bad at Goeppinger Field each fall.
He worked as a member of the football "chain gang" for 53.....that's 53 YEARS.
I asked Tony if Mike had ever been honored for this service. Yes, at halftime of a game on the 50th annivesary of this work, he was honored and given a certificate for free lifetime admittance to all BHS and DMACC events.
P.S. Tony, a former Toreador swimmer, is still at it....and very impressively. He is still a United States Master Swimmer. At age 76, he is ranked in the Top 10 nationally in several events with a high of 4th best in the 200 breaststroke.

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Beverly Abrahamson Keigley, 83, Madrid area. BHS-55. Original family lived in Fraser and Boone. Bev married Herbert Keigley in 1952 and the couple farmed in the Napier/Luther area. Survivors include a son and daughter and her brother, Stanley Abrahamson of Boone........Michael Riker, 75, Boone/Eastern Star. BHS-63. Worked on the football "chain gang" at Toreador games for 53 years. Survivors include his brother, Tony, BHS-62..........Don Reed, 94, Clear Lake. BHS-44. Navy vet. Last member of the Clarence Reed family, which included brothers, Charles, Bob and Bill, and sisters, Fearl, Marie Seiler and Marilyn. Was the first sports announcer for KWBG when it opened, March 2, 1950........Larry Gillespie, 96, Des Moines. Was a teacher/boys basketball coach at BHS in the early to mid 1950's. Moved on to Des Moines Tech. A son and daughter survive........Henry Knoploh, 92, Ames. Married Virginia Frahm in 1952. Taught school in Postville and then Clear Lake for 30 years. Retirement brought them to Boone for a time before they settled in Ames. A son and daughter survive.......Margaret "Peggy" McVay Sharp,76, Boone/Eastern Star. Born in Boone. Served for several years in city administrative positions in Knoxville and then Johnston. A daughter and sister survive..........Kathleen Wheelock, 72, Boone. A very good friend of the Korner.

HERE WE GO AGAIN!

If you thought the Kornerman was a bit confused, disoriented regarding the last edition, HANG ON!
That edition was titled, "Where is this Going?" and yes, we could probably use the same banner again this time.
So many thoughts, some good but, alarmingly, quite a few bad but then, isn't that the world we are living in these days?
One at a time.....good or sad......that's all we can handle.
K-----K
Let's try some "happy" to begin with.
     (1) A neighbor, Jim Ballantyne, BHS-77, waved as he drove by. But then, I noticed the back end of his big truck backing up to a spot right in front of our house. He yelled from the cab, "hey, I got a clipping in the mail and I think I've got it figured out where it came front." I, of course, immediately denied knowing anything about it BUT yes, he was one of the recipients of a Bumble B clipping and I was the sender.
The clipping told of a Jim Ballantyne, in a Boone High School baseball game, hitting a single to drive in, not only the tying run, but the winning run.
He admitted that the clipping was a "fun thing" to receive and a real memory maker.
     (2) Here's where the real fun begins. Some, maybe even many of you viewers, will disagree.
Another happy note was just announced. Because of a Big Ten Conference edict, there will be no Cy-Hawk football game this season. Officially, the conference said no Big Ten teams will play non-conference games this season. That means a season opener that pits Northern Iowa against the Hawkeyes is also "gone."
The Kornerman has said many times that I have never liked Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Drake "knocking heads." The simple reason is......I don't like ANY of those Iowa teams going down to defeat, particularly at the hands of "their own." Regarding these matchups, the Kornerman has a "sick" feeling during all the pre-game banter and a "sick" feeling after the game, regardless of who wins. I can do without that.
The same could be said for any smaller school teams in the state that matchup, although I have to concede that due to travel restrictions, interstate conference affiliations etc. many of those matches simply have to be played in a normal year.
K-----K
Now, the flip side of the coin........the sadness our community has been experiencing.
Yes, death is a part of life but doesn't it seem like we, in Boone, Iowa, have had more than our share of grief recently?
Obviously, I'm not going to get into a lot of names but its just sad to lose so many good, solid citizens with good families and exceptional service to our community. They're just very sad losses and I'm feeling it and I'm sure you are too.
In sadness, I was buoyed by a note from George Eckstein, BHS-58, who just lost his wife, Becky. He wrote, "you have lost a number one reader of your blog. She loved to follow Boone through you." So, although very saddened by this passing, the Kornerman is determined to continue our efforts on behalf of others who, like Becky, found the Korner, somewhat, important to them. We all need some reassurance on occasion and I so much appreciated George's note.

BREAKING NEWS: More sad news for the Kornerman and BHS students of the early 1950's. Larry Gillespie, 96, of Des Moines has passed away. Larry was my BHS basketball coach in 1952-53 prior to moving on to Des Moines Tech. He was appreciated as a good, strong personality and basketball coach and taught many good life lessons. I had lots of admiration for him.
K-----K
A couple of recent deaths provided some memories from years ago.
The Kornerman noted the recent passing of Dorothy Jensen, 95, of Leesburg, VA. Her husband of 73 years, Lawrence, had passed away earlier.
The Jensen's farmed in the Madrid area and I got to know them well as I followed their kids, Dick and Barbara's, MHS athletic careers while I was Sports Editor of the Boone News.
Dick was 6-8, an all-state basketball player and a 1965 state cross country champion.
He was tall and he could run and University of Iowa basketball coach Ralph Miller noticed.
At Iowa, Dick played on a Hawkeye team, "the Six Pack," that is often termed the best in UOI history. That team was an unbelieveable 14-0 in winning the Big Ten championship, reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and finished the season at 20-5.
Fred "Downtown" Brown and John Johnson were All-American players who later became NBA All-Stars. They were joined on that Hawkeye team by Jensen, Chad Calabria, Glenn "Stick" Vidnovik and the late Ben McGilmer.
A very high-scoring unit, Jensen played center and was relied more on rebounding and defensive play while the others provided the points.
K-----K
Another memorymaker was the recent death of Ron Flockhart, 88, BHS-51, who passed away in Morristown, TN.
Ron married classmate Kay Honohan Flockhart and Ron's work with food companies carried the family to numerous states. In retirement, the couple settled in Morristown.
Kay's parents were well know east Boone County farmers, Harold and Ev Honohan. Ev was heavily involved in numerous area organizations and was known for voicing her opinion on many subjects. Daughter Kay was just the opposite.
She was shy and always involved in the arts in high school and college. That love has continued to this day as both she and Ron were members of a Morristown theatre group.
After high school graduation, the couple weren't often Boone returnees, especially after family members passed. However,  I do remember one occasion when they were here for a class reunion and/or to visit with Ron's brother in Stratford. They stopped at the BNR to say "hello" and, somewhere, I have a picture of the three of us.
It just seemed, "for sure" that, with Kay's theatrical background, their daughter, Calista Flockhart, would, someday, make a name for herself as an actress....and she did.
While some older Boone residents may remember a very young Calista spending summertime in the Boone area visiting her grandparents, others might remember her TV roles in "Ally McBeal," "Brothers and Sisters" and "Super Girl."
Oh yes, since 2010, Calista has been the wife of Indiana Jones.....aka Harrison Ford.

WHERE IS THIS GOING?

Honestly, I don't have a clue. Don't know where this is headed.
Lots of things rolling around in this old noggin and no set plan in place.
In this edition, the Kornerman is a "ramblin' man."
K-----K
For many years, I've thought how very fortunate we sports fans are to be able to sit in the comfort of our living room, beverage in hand and enjoying the greatest sports events ever on huge television screens.....at no cost, except what we paid, monthly, to various TV outlets.
Then, my amazement at this "gift" increased substantially as I read of the tremendous upsurge in salaries being paid to big time athletes and coaches.
How in the world can this "free lunch" continue.?
Well, I think we're starting to see significant signs that it will NOT continue. Pay TV, separate payment for each individual event you want to see, seems closer and closer each day.
My Chicago Cubs situation is a good example. For years, its been as simple as turning a TV knob to watch the cubbies in action from any location.......for no charge above normal monthly cable fees.
But, as predicted, someone in the Cubs organization finally decided a new revenue source was needed to pay the exorbitant players/managers/etc salaries.
Thus, a year or so ago, the Cubs threw longtime TV/radio partner, WGN, "under the bus" and began their own Marquee Television Network. Some cable companies have agreed to pay new and higher required fees and jump on board to continue to receive Cubs games. Direct TV is probably the most prominent.
HOWEVER, Comcast, which had also served the Cubs for many years, AND happens to boast of, by far, the most available viewers in the Chicagoland area, has stalled. They've said, "hey, wait a minute. We don't know if we favor paying the huge fees Marquee is asking for the right to carry the Cubs games." Dish TV subscribers, including the Kelley's, depend on Comcast as part of our cable package.
The word out of Chicago is that BOTH Marquee and Comcast NEED an agreement to keep "peace" in the Chicagoland area and that there will probably be an agreement, but not until just before the first pitch of the new season is thrown. But, as of today, there is no such agreement and many Cub fans are getting "antsy" about the situation.
Look, increased fees are coming.....one way or another. There may not be a time when you pay $15 directly to watch a certain event but if forced to rely on Direct, Comcast or Dish to see such events, those outlets are going to have to increase our monthly fees to override what Marquee is charging them.
K-----K
What do you mean there's no Pufferbilly......no Pufferbilly parade.?
In the midst of this pandemic "shutdown," the Kornerman, watching Jerry Manriquez web site, accidentally noted the availability of a full viewing of the 1987 Pufferbilly parade. I watched all 28 minutes and 29 seconds of it. It brought a smile, even a chuckle.
Oh, it was great to see. It was a beautiful day, lots of entries, including many very nice floats, FIVE bands, the famed Steperettes marching group and lots of horses.
The late Ray Pugh was the Grand Marshall and the Boone Mayor was Elmer Ohlmann. The usual bands were there but United Community still had one at that time and the famous West Des Moines Valley Marchmasters were featured. I bet the late Jerry Kinney, a friend of many Boone County residents, was their director at that time.
     It was fun to watch.
K-----K
Regarding normally planned community summertime events, because of the pandemic, it seems all is almost lost.
Not true. At least as of this morning.
At Monday's city council meeting, a top representative of the IMCA, the sponsor of the event, indicated to the council that plans have not changed regarding the annual Super National racing event.
The Boone Speedway will be the host, September 14-19.
Then too, the Boone County Fair is "hanging on." It is set for July 16-19.
K-----K
Glenda McCambridge Camelin, BHS-59, is the latest to indicate she finally figured out who sent her those infamous clippings from the Bumble B about her Boone High School days.

OUR CHANGING WORLD

In the midst of all........the Kornerman is determined to begin with something, ANYTHING, positive today. So, here it is.
FROM ALL EARLY INDICATIONS, THE FARM PROGRESS SHOW WILL BE HELD IN BOONE IN 2021.
Via the normal schedule, it would have been in Boone this year, but then move to Decatur, Ill next year.
However, as you should know by now, this year's event has been cancelled. I'm not going to bore you with another endless statement of despair that follows each of these announcements of another cancellation. The gist of all such statements is simply the invasion of COVID-19.
P.S. To this moment, the Boone County Fair, July 15-19, and Super National races, September 7-12, are still scheduled for this summer in Boone, Iowa.
K-----K
Call it a hub if you wish. Or, at its least, its a very central part of the Boone communities traffic pattern. We're talking about South Jackson Street.
Since moving to South Jackson three years ago, the Kelley's have been amazed at the heavy volume of traffic that moves by each day.
We think we've got it figured. The entire northeast part of Boone must view South Jackson as somewhat of a "shortcut" to Fareway, Walmart and highway 30. Those living in the northwest part of town probably lean more to South Story and westward for their southbound excursions.
Anyway, in good weather, we enjoy sitting in front with a hoped for nice, shady breeze early in the morning and bright sunshine in the afternoon, as well as a good view of #11 tee-off at Cedar Pointe AND a good view of the hundreds, if not thousands, of various size and make vehicles that pass by on a very consistent basis.
We wave a lot and many passersby wave back at us, even though we, oftentimes, aren't really aware of who we're corresponding with. It doesn't matter......we like it and hope they do too. Walkers and smaller modes of transportation go by as well, but many such participants wear ear plugs and/or have facebook in their hands and are oblivious to our waves or even our presence.
We may not be around to see it, but it seems to make sense that some day, rather than being forced to master the curve onto Hancock Drive, South Jackson would be extended straight south all the way to highway 30. In that case, a stop sign at Hancock might help keeping South Jackson from being Iowa's newest speedway.
P.S. The speed limit on South Jackson, as well as Hancock, is 25 mph.......yes, really. Just for fun, I'd like to have one of those radar speed guns. That could prove very entertaining.
K-----K
More recipients of those "anonymous" Bumble B clippings are coming "out of the woodwork."
Larry Meyers, BHS-57, and wife, Marla, pulled in our drive to say "thanks" for sending some clippings of Larry's BHS days. Marla said she had a scrapbook of some of Larry's achievements but didn't have any of those they received from the Kornerman. The ones we sent were taken from old Bumble B's.
Then too, received a note from Tom Rinker, BHS-55, who lives in Ankeny. He said it took him a month to figure out where/who the clippings may have come from. He wrote, "anyway, thanks very much for the clippings. I appreciated it a lot."
K-----K
BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Wayne Chadwick, 92, West Des Moines. He grew up in the Des Moines area but other family members resided in Boone. His parents were John and Myra Chadwick. They preceeded him in death, as did his brothers, Gene and Rex, BHS-57, and his sister, Janet, BHS-53. Among the survivors is his brother-in-law,  Doug "Pete" Keigley, BHS-52, Janet's husband. Wayne was a well known race car driver who won numerous championships at the Kessell and Pioneer Speedways..........James Gardner, 66, Ogden. Grew up in the Des Moines area. Worked many years for John Deere. Was very involved in the Boone and Scenic Valley railroad, serving in various capacities, including as an engineer. Survivors include his mother, Roberta, and a sister, Linda Gardner-Goos........Myrene "Renie" Ferron, 72, Boone. Formerly of Crawford, NE..........Marilyn Schmickley, 82, Scottsdale, AZ. Survivors include her husband, Dennis Schmickley, BHS-57, nine children and step-children.
