A WARNING

     BEWARE!

Right now, South Jackson Street is the gateway to the south part of Boone and, when the new Ledges Elementary building opens next year and Hancock Drive is extended all the way out to Corporal Snedden Drive, even more high volume traffic will be added.

We've seen the start of preparation for that coming onslaught in recent days as a new STOP sign has been placed on South Jackson at Hancock. That gives drivers plenty of time to "learn" of the new responsibility before school construction is completed.

We'll assume there may be more such activity coming......and with it, the possibility of a stop sign on two more sides, or, perhaps just one more side of that intersection??

Believe me, so far, drivers are NOT seeing the new stop sign. Conservatively, I'd say nine of 10 are driving through without a stop. My definition of a stop is that a vehicle is stopped BEHIND the sign. Now we've noticed some drivers are slowly driving through or eventually creeping beyond the sign before making a stop as if to say, "did I just see something different here at this intersection?"

PERHAPS THEY DID SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT SINCE I'VE NOTICED NOW THAT A COUPLE OF FLAGS HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE STOP SIGN.......IN AN EFFORT TO PROVIDE MORE VISABILITY.

A final solution will come through. It will just take time to get used too.

In the meantime, pass the word to folks you know who travel that direction.

K-----K

Hey, he's 90 and has been around the block a time or two, so why not take advantage of his wisdom on tackling the challenges of these more modern times.

Vern Modeland, BHS-50, has this to say, "It's becoming harder and harder to stay focused on anything these days. Especially for the younger Booneites who must feel assaulted any time they try to attempt anything. I recommend a decade or more without television being turned on as one way of reclaiming sanity. Avoidance of podcasts is another. This new-age technology is certain to foster a focus on just what you want to know, instead of what you should know. Some nice digital sound from the reader's personal CD library or its equivalent is recommended. That, and a walk around the block, around McHose Park or the Ledges or somewhere else where it is quiet. Listening to one's self form original thoughts and then, test their logic. That's what the doctor orders. An old doctor. One with lots of gray hair and a kindly smile. And a name known widely, like Longworth or some of the others that kept us put together when we were young. How about that?

NEW WELLNESS CENTER DEVELOPMENT

An Edgar Winter composed the lyrics for a song, sung usually by country artists........Kacey Musgraves, Kris Kristofferson and Chris Ledoux to name a few.

The song tells a tale of a love situation where things are up and down, in or out.....just not very settled. "Round and round it goes and where it stops, nobody knows."

Reminds me of the continuing Boone Wellness Center saga which recently encountered a new "twist."

As you may recall, originally, the hope, by some, was that the cities purchased area, bounded by Seventh Street on the north and Story Street on the west, (the site of Fareway many years ago), would provide a nice area for a proposed Wellness Center. Eventually, a citywide vote was called for and that idea came to an unfavorable decision, even though Fareway, itself, had promised a $2-million boost toward a successful conclusion.

Not to be denied, the city council decided for a second try and a second vote was scheduled for March of 2023.

However, in the most recent development, Dollar General has offered $225,000 for that property with plans to construct a store of 10,000 to 13,000 square feet. Instead of a Wellness Center, the sale of that property, if approved by the council, supports bringing additional retail to the downtown area and may open additional redevelopment opportunities in downtown Boone.

Obviously, that initial citywide vote indicated a dislike for the center. Some voters apparently just plain didn't see any need while others cited such things as a lack of parking in the area for their objection.

So now, the ball is back in the court of those desiring a Wellness Center. That is, if the council approves the sale of the property to General Dollar, which is expected. Now, the possibility of finding a different location is probably the number one item Wellness Center proponents are now facing.......with the hope that Fareway's original gift offer is still in effect......and that they will receive a more favorable outcome in the March vote.

P.S. The Kornerman understands that this is "old news" for local viewers. However, native Booneites still show an interest in their "hometown" activities so we like to keep them informed on major events.

K-----K

Reading a recent edition of the Register, a name caught my eye.......Sherry Poole.

You may recall (I do) that Sherry was in Boone, for a time, as one of our first female police department members. I, the Kornerman, can recall interviewing her and writing a story about her for the BNR.

After graduating from Iowa State, her first job was as a police officer in Boone, 1986-97. She then had positions in the Des Moines school system, teaching for 15 years and, eventually, becoming a Des Moines Hoover Principal.

Now, I see she's listed as.....Interim Director of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. That is very rad. She has really moved her career forward. Nice to know she had some of her earlier training in Boone, Iowa.

Boone historian Larry Adams, BHS-65, has a suggestion for you if you run out of ideas for "idle time."

Larry, who spends his summer time in the lakes area, says that the Dickinson County Newspaper Archives features "lots of Boone County references and materials."

UNBELIEVABLE

I, the Kornerman, just shook my head.......in disbelief I guess.

The NCAA football coach compensation list has a new leader. No, its not Saban, Lincoln Riley or Dabo Swinney. No, those guys are has-beens when it comes to their compensation package.

The new leader is Kirby Smart of Georgia, who just recently picked up a cozy $11,250,000 package. Riley is at 10 million and Saban way back there at $9,753,000.

I couldn't help but think about good old Johnny Orr.....the Iowa State University basketball coach for 14 seasons beginning in 1980.

When he rejected Michigan's offer to "stick around" in favor of coming to ISU, the entire nation of basketball watchers were completely stunned. It was a big time national story. Michigan, where he had been very successful, including a runnerup finish to undefeated Indiana in the 1976 NCAA championship game and National Coach of Year honors, offered a paltry $33,665 per season, as compared to the Cyclones offer of (gulp) $45,000. Those aren't millions, they're thousands. Johnny said there was no way he could turn that bonanza down. Can't you just imagine the "raising of eyebrows" in the national collegiate basketball fraternity seeing that one of their coaches was being paid this "out of world" salary? Great jealousy I imagine.

P.S. Does anybody remember that Johnny Orr spent eight of his early coaching years at Dubuque Senior High School in Iowa?

Since we're on the subject, T.J. Otzelberger, the current ISU basketball coach, now receives $1.2 million while Fran McCaffrey, at the State University of Iowa, is paid $2.9 million. ISU football coach Matt Campbell is up to $4 million and Kirk Ferentz at Iowa gets $5,566,666.

K-----K

    BITS AND PIECES

    (1) Andy Anderson, BHS-62, sent me a note about a story that appeared in the Cedar Rapids Gazette yesterday (9-16) regarding former Toreador Chad Rinehart's induction into the University of Northern Iowa Hall of Fame. Chad will be honored at today's football game after last night's HOF banquet. Very nice story and picture of the former Toreador football player, BHS-2003, who became an All American at UNI and enjoyed several NFL seasons. Of course, the Kornerman had previously reported that story in our August 8 edition of the Korner. (2) Jerry Manriquez, BSH-57, enjoyed our Korner story about the Boone High athletes who had played football for ISU or Iowa University. Jerry mentioned it was too bad that Francis Dale (Hap) Moran, BHS-20, didn't play at either ISU or Iowa. He is certainly remembered as one of Boone High School's greatest all-around athletes but he chose Grinnell College before an outstanding NFL career. (3) Received a nice note from Larry Adams, BHS-65. He is continuing his 16th season as the Curator and Financial Historian at the William Higgins Jr. Foundation Inc. National Bank Note Museum and Library in Okoboji. He said he sees Boone people in the area quite often, "because there is a history of many Boone residents with a connection to the lakes area." He'll soon be returning to his Boone home. (4) Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, agrees with me on the Iowa/ISU football game. He remembered when Bob Commings, a former Hawkeye player and a high school coach in Ohio, was hired to lead the Iowa University football program. Loehrer said, "Commings was asked about the Iowa/ISU game and replied, "why would you play a game when half the state wakes up sick to their stomach the next day?"

CALISTA FLOCKHART FORD UPDATE

The Korner hasn't been known to feature much "movie news" in past editions. However, it appears that both Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart are about to engage in career comebacks and that spurs some area interest due to the fact that Calista's parents are Boone High School graduates and that she, as a young girl, spent some summer time in the Boone area.

Ronald Lee Flockhart and Kay Calista Honohan graduated with the BHS class of 1951. Ron died in July of 2020. His parents were George and Jewel Flockhart and he had a brother, Larry, who became a Stratford resident. All three are deceased. Larry's wife, Dora Ann (Dodie) Flockhart of Stratford survives.

Kay's parents, now deceased, were East Boone County farmers, John Harold and Ev Honohan. Ev was very much involved in numerous area projects and more than willing to issue her opinion on issues that evolved. Kay's brother, Jay Honohan, was a 1948 BHS grad and is a long time Iowa City native.

An ISU grad, Ron Flockhart and Kay lived in several areas of the U.S. while he worked for Kraft Foods. Kay was an English teacher, who leaned heavily toward theatre work. The couple retired in 1995 and made their home in Morristown, TN.

Calista Kay was born in Freeport, IL in 1964, graduated from Shawnee High School in Medford, N.J. in 1983 and attended the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre from Rutgers in 1988.

Calista, 57, met Harrison Ford, 80, at the Golden Globes ceremony in 2002 and in June of 2010, they were married. Calista had adopted a son, Liam, in 2001 and the couple are also parents of three sons and one daughter from Ford's previous marriages.

Calista gained early fame as the title character in the Ally McBeal TV series, 1998-2002, and Brothers and Sisters, 2006-2011. Ford, of course, is most well known for his Indiana Jones portrayals, although he has also starred in various other films.

Both have been relatively quiet in the most recent years, spending a lot of time at their residence at their 800-acre ranch in Jackson Hole,WY.  However, it appears they are both anxious now to return to work.

Calista is in the HBO drama "Feud," which describes Truman Capote's fall from grace as he was shunned from the New York social scene. It will air in December.

Ford will be appearing in the upcoming "Yellowstone" spin-off " 1923." He also has one last Indiana Jones film, "Indiana Jones 5" coming.

In a surprise appearance at the Disney D23 expo, he promised, "I won't fall down for you again." and added, "Indiana Jones movies are about fantasy and mystery but they're also about heart." The series began with Raiders of the Lost Art in 1981 and that was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and in 2008, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull."

OH NO! THAT CY-HAWK GAME IS HERE AGAIN

The annual Iowa Hawkeye/Iowa State Cyclone football extravaganza is front and center this Saturday.......and I, the Kornerman, don't like it. Never have.

I love both these teams and all other Iowa teams and never want any of them to lose. When I was a media member I covered both teams, oftentimes from the respective press boxes. At one time, I had ISU basketball season tickets and Iowa University football season tickets.

To me, these in-state contests are not a bit enjoyable. Yes, I'm happy for the winner BUT the poor loser already has a stain on its seasonal record in the first two weeks of the season.

Because of the subjected involved,  I decided this would be a good time to salute the Boone influence on both the Cyclone and Hawkeye football histories.

Right off the bat, let's enjoy and boast this bit of local history that may never be duplicated. In the 1940 season, both football programs featured full season captains that were Boone Iowa products. The Cyclone captain was Tom Smith, BHS-37, and the Hawkeye captain was Mike "Iron Mike" Enich, BHS-37. I continue to wonder.......has this ever happened before? I doubt it. Captains from both football teams from the same town in the same year.

Both Iowa and ISU have had Boone All-Americans..........Jim Doran of the Cyclones and Mike Enich of the Hawkeyes. I know, some of you are going to get technical on me and say that Doran was a graduate of Beaver High School, which didn't have a high school football program. However, we've always called Jim "one of our own." He's always had many relatives in Boone and after his high school days, his parents moved to Boone.

At ISU,  Doran was a two-time All-Conference end who earned All-American status in 1950, at which time he owned almost all of the Cyclone pass receiving records. He went on to National Football League fame, primarily with the Detroit Lions. He played on three NFL championship teams and was a Pro Bowl selectee in 1960.

Before the Super Bowl was initiated, there was simply an NFL championship game. Later it was called the Super Bowl. In the 1953 championship game, Detroit edged the Cleveland Browns, 17-16, as Doran caught a 33-yard game winning touchdown pass. He played 11 years in the NFL, and was an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers for a year before his love of farming drove him back to Iowa. He died in 1994. They weren't BHS grads, but two of Jim's sons were also Cyclone letterwinners.....Jim Junior in 1987-90 and Lant from 1989-91.

Mike Enich was a fullback at Boone High School but Dr. Eddie Anderson, his coach at Iowa, made him a tackle on the 1939 "Ironman" team that had such a small roster, most players had to play the entire 60 minute games. Enich, himself, played "all the way" in six of the contests during the 6-1-1 season which was highlighted by a 7-6 win over Notre Dame and a final number nine national ranking. That 1939 team also featured Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick. Due to five years of military service, Enich had no opportunity for a professional football career. However, after his service time, he did come back to the University of Iowa, earned a law degree and became a District Court Judge. He died in 1978.

There have been several other Boone natives who have played football for either the Cyclones or Hawkeyes.

At Iowa,  Terry Ferry, BHS-61, played in the 1964-65 seasons and John Hendricks, BHS-64, played in the 1965-67 campaigns.

He never lettered, but George (Bricky) Johnstone, BHS-52, was a member of the Hawkeye squad in the mid-50's AND I'm not sure about this, but I think Nelson Tompkins, a Hawkeye letterman in 1930-31, eventually became a well known Boone resident, although he was not a BHS graduate?

At ISU, Don (Red) Houser, BHS-49, was a Cyclone letterman in 1952-53 and Tim Creasman, BHS-83, lettered in 1986-88.

Houser gave a young Mo Kelley quite a thrill. I and some BHS classmates often traveled, usually hitch-hiked, to Cyclone games. I recall an ISU season opening game at Clyde Williams Field when Houser took an early kickoff and ran it all the way back for a touchdown. It's a moment I've never forgotten......seeing a former Toreador, who was a hero of mine, star in a college game at Iowa State College.

WHO AM I MISSING FROM MY LIST????

SO, IN CONCLUSION,.......The word is "Fight! Fight! Fight! for Iowa, Let every loyal Iowan sign, the word is "Fight! Fight! Fight! for Iowa until the walls and rafters ring."

OR......."Oh, we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State and may her colors ever fly. Oh, we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State with the will to do or die."

   Isn't a tie possible????

WE SHINE MORE LIGHT ON BOONE

     Boone....Boone.....Boone

     Pufferbilly......Farm Progress......Super Nationals......New schools

     Kostelnick......Rinehart.......Bassett.......Nigro-Weaver........the Kruse boys

If you're not a Boone area lover, you probably get tired of the Kornerman's hard lean to the achievements of this area, this community and its residents.

Got news for you......it isn't going to stop.

How time flies. I remember when she was a little girl, then, BHS-15, and now a graduate of the Drake Law School. Catherine Anderson Skotzke, the daughter of proud parents, Bruce, BHS-79, and Mary Moffitt Anderson, BHS-79, has passed the Iowa bar exam and will be admitted to the bar in a ceremony on September 16.

BUT, that's only half of a great story. Catherine will soon become an associate at the Des Moines office of Nyemaster Goode, PC, AND she'll be practicing law along with fellow Toreadors, Jeff Courter, BHS-80; Jeff Harty, BHS-87 and Richard Sapp, BHS-68. You think their might be some great Boone memories shared in that office?

Dad Bruce, President and General Counsel for the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association recalled, "I think it's pretty special that Lloyd Courter, BHS-53, and I practiced law together in Boone and now, his oldest son and my youngest daughter will practice together also."

The Kornerman noted that Mark Edwards of Boone, a retiree after 30 years from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in coordination and policy, has presented a guest column to the Des Moines Register.

According to Mark's story, Iowa's present ecology cannot be sustained and needs healing. Simply said, he reports that our present tactics, "politics and blaming/shaming are not working" and he goes into detail the reason for those thoughts. Nice to see that the Register gives some space to a Boone resident.

Speaking of the Register. As I have indicated in the Korner previously, as usual, I have made my annual plea to the Des Moines newspaper for some kind.....any kind......of coverage of the Boone Super Nationals. I mean its been here since 1988 and maybe there has been some coverage that I missed......but still......this is a huge central Iowa event that, to my mind, deserves more than casual coverage.

This year, I've again contacted the Register Sports Department and even Carol Hunter, the Executive Editor, pointing out this has to be one of Iowa's biggest events each year.......over 1,000 cars entered......all the fans, friends and families of the drivers who come to Boone from over 40 states and Canada, many of the thousands, to spend the entire week in our state.

This year, I even added columnist Courtney Crowder of those at the Register that I contacted about why this event should be covered. She, at least, answered me......stating that her schedule is done well in advance but she would most certainly pass this concern on.........to guess who? Yes, the sports department which is always wrapped up tightly in a smaller Knoxville racing event.

Haven't seen anything yet but here's hoping.......
