ELECTION TIME

To some LOCAL viewers, reports we make now and then provide "old news" that they are already aware of.  That may be the case today. However, the Kornerman reminds that a rather sizable majority of our viewers are from out-of-state......many miles distant. Time and again we're reminded that these native sons and daughters appreciate the Korner keeping them up to date on happenings in their old home town. The death notices we provide.......former classmates, friends, even relatives...... are also information that they may have no other opportunity to receive.

Elections, local and national, are slated for Tuesday.
In Boone, city, school board and park board seats will be filled.
For the first time in several years, current Mayor John Slight faces opposition. Slight is a nine-time incumbent. His opponent will be a fellow council member, Holly Stecker, who currently holds an at-large position on the council.
Linda Williamson and Annie Wallert will be candidates to replace Stecker's at-large position. In the third ward, voters will choose either incumbent Elijah Stines or newcomer Todd Rasmussen. In the fifth ward, either Cole Hilpipre or Scott Zeitler will be a first time councilman.
Positions on the park board have drawn interest from seven people, three to be elected. Amy Landas and John Niemants hope to remain on the board. The other candidates are David Sherry, Brandon Hurley, Kevin Pearson, Levi Baber and Sarah Colby.
In the Boone Community school board election, two candidates will be chosen from a field of three. Jeremy Pritchard and Dr. Brian Melhaus have currently held positions on that board and Fred Acuff is a newcomer seeking a seat for the first time.

Plans for the new elementary building are proceeding. In recent weeks, lots of grading of the land involved has been taking place in preparation for a quick start to the construction when a cooperative Spring season arrives.
There's lots of paper work involved of course. The Boone Community School District Board has now set the bid date and public hearing for the new facility. Sealed bids are to be received before 2 p.m. on December 7. Bids will be publicly opened and read aloud at that time.
Then,  at 6:30 p.m. on December 13, the Board will hold a public hearing on the plans, specifications, form of contract and estimated total cost of construction of the new building.

Work is progressing on demolition of the old Gigglin' Goat, Boone Depot building and parking ramp which have been "dead weight" for several years now. Those occupy most of the block from Seventh Street south and Story Street east.
At last look, most of that old parking ramp north of the Boone County Historical Society Building has come tumbling down and at least one city official has predicted the entire demolition project will be completed by Thanksgiving.
What comes after the complete demolition is unknown at this time, although there has been talk of an eventual Wellness Center placement in that area.

Let's face it, ever since this blog was started on March 6, 2010, we've catered, mainly, toward   1960's, 70's, 80's residents and happenings during those years in the Boone community. Needless to say, the Korner  has lost many good friends, supporters and viewers from that period of time.
This might be a good time to come "up to date" on our 2021 viewership.
As of this moment, 282 have paid us a visit today, there were 448 yesterday, 13,125 have given us a peek this month, 9,945 last month and our all time total stands at 648, 209.

WHO GOES WHERE?

As the excitement builds regarding the addition of a new elementary building as part of the Boone Community School district, the Kornerman has heard the following discussion over and over and over. "What students will occupy this new building and what about Franklin and the Boone Middle School?"
We could probably also add....."what about Lincoln and Page schools?"
Lots of questions and, perhaps, many incorrect answers.
So, here we go......making an effort for some clarification.
The brand new facility, that is scheduled for a 2023 fall opening, will include daycare, preschool, transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade, most which are currently offered at Page and Lincoln elementary schools. Page and Lincoln will close with the advent of the new elementary building.
The new facility will be built with the flexibility to accomodate future needs, such as expanded programming and/or adjustments to grade level configurations. It is also being built with expansion in mind, ensuring larger areas such as the gymnasium, cafeteria and library can be added to accomodate as  many as  600 students, if needed later.
Franklin elementary provides the next step in the overall educational experience. Second, third and fourth graders occupy that building which currently is serving 370 students.
Then comes the Boone Middle School for students in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades. This school year, 672 students are attending Boone Middle School.
Freshmen students then move to Boone High School, joining sophomores, juniors and seniors to complete their high school education.
Another important part of the complete Boone Community School District program is the Futures Alternative school, which is designed to provide an expanded educational setting for students. The primary purpose of the Futures program is to develop a realization of the value of education and work preparation skills which enable students to earn a Boone Basic diploma. All Futures school offerings are based on measurable student competencies and standards.
Sometime in the coming months, decisions will be made regarding the Page and Lincoln facilities and plans may also be settled regarding a new location for the Boone Futures school, which has been located at 727 Mamie Eisenhower Avenue for many years.

REMEMBERING NEIGHBORHOOD GROCERY STORES

Tony Crandell, BHS-69, has added to the recent memory of northside neighborhood grocery stores. He wrote, "it was very interesting to read Mike Ahlstrom's history with respect to the Superette and Fergie's neighborhood stores. Since Mike was a classmate of my wife's from K through graduation, lived in her neighborhood, and attended Lowell school with her, we try and stop whenever in the Atlanta area to see him and his wife, Doreen. To show you how old I am, I remember shopping at the ORIGINAL Kelley's Crawford street store. I was in third grade and lived at the intersection of 17th and Division streets. It was only a four block bike ride to the Crawford street store. I am still amazed at how much stuff your dad was able to display and shelve in that little building."
Here we go....with some editor's memories on this same subject.
Yes, my folks and I came to Boone July 1, 1946 after my dad purchased that small grocery  AND the house, north, right next door that I grew up in, from Toots Shadle for the grand purchase price of $13,000. He must have made a killing because July 5, 1950, he moved to the much larger Superette on 17th street between Crawford and Carroll. The Superette served the area until June 17, 1967, about the time the bigger downtown stores began offering many more hours of service and other things the smaller stores couldn't match. At about that same time, many of the other 26 neighborhood grocery stores that, at one time, served Boone residents started dwindling to oblivion. That Superette building became four small apartments and is still operating as such. By the way, that tiny Original Kelley's grocery building on Crawford is "still alive." It was moved clear across town to a spot right across the street from the Salvation Army headquarters near Fifth and Benton streets. There, it became Rinehart's neighborhood grocery and, later, a beauty shop. I have no idea what is occupying that building now.
P.S. I, the Kornerman, confess.....it wasn't me that tracked those 26 grocery stores mentioned. The late John Veale, BHS-46. receives the credit. He did an extensive study of neighborhood stores one time for the benefit of a story in the Boone County Historical Society's monthly publication and that's the count he came up with.

A DOUBLE DOSE OF MEMORIES

In a recent edition, we caught up with news of Mike Ahlstrom's working life that included some up and close encounters with many various national celebrities.
    But there's more!
Mike, BHS-61, also provided some local memories which, in turn, provided the Kornerman also with some local memories.
He wrote, "it was a lucky day for Boone when the Kelley family arrived and it was lucky for me that I got to know your parents. In about ninth grade, I was working at Fergie's neighborhood grocery store on 16th street, stocking shelves on weekends, when your dad, Clint, made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I was making 50-cents an hour, and he offered me a 30% increase to work at Kelley's Superette on 17th street. That's right....15 cents an hour more. It was the first corporate personnel raid I ever heard of. I've thought about that through the years and I've never known how he knew about my shelf-stocking talents. I learned a lot from your folks during that time, and have always held them in such high esteem."
Mike went on, "when I finally wrote about a few of the things I had a chance to do during my assignments with Sears it was to keep John Hinz, BHS-64, to stop nagging me about it. Then, I finally agreed it would be alright for John to share that with you. Even then, I never gave it a thought that it would end up in Kelley's Korner. When someone forwarded that Korner to me, I was surprised and flattered by your interest and then, hopeful, that people would realize I've just been a lucky and very appreciative guy."
He concluded, "I think maybe luck begins with having good parents, friends and teachers. I certainly have had those. Also, by having other adults reach out, take an interest, make a difference in young lives like scoutmasters, Little League and Babe Ruth coaches, or a Charlie Updegraff or Bob Fisher or Mo Kelley and his parents to share and pass on a life-long passion, I've certainly had all those. Indeed, having been born in Boone, Iowa, I've been lucky from the get-go."
EDITOR'S COMMENTS: Mike's memories sure supplied a mouthful of memories for me..................especially the talk of  Fergie's and the Superette. After graduating from Ames High School and Iowa State Teacher's College (now UNI) and working in the educational field, my dad and his brother, Kenneth, both ended up in Boone Iowa (some Boone ladies had something to do with that.).  And the two brothers both became neighborhood grocers AND had competing stores within a couple blocks of each other. My uncle, Kenneth, operated what later became Fergie's, on 16th street, just west off of Story and my dad had the Superette on 17th street, between Crawford and Carroll streets.
Ken, eventually, moved his family to Colorado while my dad finished out a nice business career as a neighborhood grocer before seven final years on the staff at BHS.
Lots of stories could be told about those days at the Superette but the best memory, by far, is the recollection of all the people we connected with there through those years. Once in awhile, people will still say,"I remember etc".......and often, the talk is about the huge penny candy display right at the front door of the store.
K-----K
    Things are progressing.
The crops are "in" and from now on, the yard back of  the Kelley's backyard will be seeing lots of activity the remainder of the fall season and the beginning of the spring season.
This very day, equipment is moving into the area for the movement of dirt as a first phase of the construction of a new elementary school building.
Then, on October 22, at 2 p.m., a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the official start of construction for the new Boone Early Childhood Center will take place. The winter season will follow......later rather than sooner we hope.......and then in the spring, all kinds of construction activity will "break out" there.
Last March, the voters in the Boone Community School District approved a $23 million referendum to construct, finish and equip a new elementary building and to improve the site. The referendum passed with 80.54% approval, well above the state requirement of 60%.
The building is slated to open for the 2023-24 school year. Students from Preschool to First Grade will attend the new building. It will replace the current Page and Lincoln Elementary schools. School Board members, district staff, DLR Group, Lang Construction, ConStruct, Boone City Council members and Boone Chamber members will take part in the official groundbreaking.

REUNION

Its been that time of year for class reunions and there have been several in recent weeks.
Sandy Burke Crandell, BHS-61, has kindly shared the highlights of the reunion of the BHS/BSH classes of 1961.
Some 30 classmates showed up Friday night, September 17, at Rooster's and then on Saturday, 43 came to the Boone Senior Center and were joined by some via zoom.
One of the Saturday highlights was a dinner of 70 authentic Maid Rites that Denny Mylenbusch brought from the famed Taylor's Maid Rite in Marshalltown. The Kornerman doesn't know how, but its claimed that the sandwiches were still "nice and warm." Carol Elsberry added some beautiful cakes.
The reunion was zoomed from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and those classmates who couldn't attend in person still had a chance to visit and participate.
Susan Kane Govier took the prize for being the farthest away on zoom. She called at 11 a.m. Boone time from her home just north of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii when it was 6 a.m. in those islands.
The class voted to have their next reunion in two years and Verne Lyon was again elected chairperson.
The class will continued to meet via zoom every couple of months.
On Sunday morning, several attendees met at Saints Avenue for brunch and more visiting.
K-----K
     The time has come.
Michael D. Sundall, BHS-68, has made the decision.
He wrote, "I will be retiring on November sixth after 49 years of managing health care businesses in five different states, and in preparation, I've been reflecting on influential people who have had an impact on my adult life and career."
Mike explained, "I was in Boone recently attending a Celebration of Life and ran into one of those "most influential," people......Mr./Coach John Smith."
"I had Mr. Smith for bookkeeping at BHS and he was my accounting and business professor at Boone Campus, DMACC, from 1968-70. Mr. Smith kept a watchful eye on me and directed me to buckle down and take my education seriously. Over the years, when I have traveled to Boone, I would see him at sporting or community events and always enjoyed chatting with him. He will always have a fond spot in my heart."
Most recently, Mike has been the Chief Executive Officer of a Physician's Clinic of Iowa stationed in Cedar Rapids.
He and his wife, Lynn Moorman Sundall, BHS-69, plan to spend retirement time in Columbia, MO. and Naples, FL.
K-----K
In the most recent edition, the lead story on Fast Pitch Softball "stoked" some fires.
John Muench wrote, "it's great to read another of your wonderful articles/stories about the past! I sent copies to all my family. "Thank you" for all that you have done and contributed for so many years in Boone County and all of Iowa."
Some of those receiving copies from John were Merle, Merlin, Dwight, Dianna and Stephanie Muench, Marva Jean and Glen Stark and Linda and Ronnie Trudo.
John added, "such a fun article. Some sweet memories and names from the past! Do you remember some of these names? I do, especially after my first couple years with the Boxholm Swedes."
Tom Peterson, BHS-67, was excited about the story and John Kueck, BHS-61, wrote, "I enjoyed the recap of Boone's Fast Pitch success. I watched those games regularly in the early 60's. I remember Tim Buff, an imported pitcher, who was excellent. I tried to catch him once in warmup and couldn't follow the ball.....too much movement. I also remember an ex-minor leaguer, Gary Grosnickle, BHS-53, who came "home" and played outfield. I think he had caught in the minors. I also remember a one-armed player who was so good at catching the ball, tossing it in the air while he moved the glove under his stub, and then catching and throwing the ball all in one smooth movement. As I recall, he often made it on base, batting with one hand, through his speed and bunting and slapping it over the infielder's heads."

Bob was an important contributor when our famous Little League program got started in the 1950's.
Fast pitch? Yes, that competition in Iowa these days is just a trickle compared to what it was in the 1940's, 50's, 60's and Boone was pretty much a central figure in that statewide program in those days.
Contributions? Well Bob and, in fact, the entire Olson family, were heavily involved. The family  probably holds an all-time record that may never be broken. Four of them, four of the Olson family, are Hall of Fame inductees.
Bob's two sons, Mike, in 2019, and Tim, in 2021, were accorded those honors most recently BUT, prior to that, two of Bob's brothers, Dean, in 1986, and Gene, in 1997, were also given the ultimate honor. Dean is deceased.
Yes, four from one family.....the Olson's of Boone.
Tom Peterson, BHS-67, another Hall of Famer, 1994, had this idea......"must be in the genes," he said.
Talk about Boone being a central figure in that Fast Pitch program, hey, we're just getting started. Ten other Booneites are also Hall of Fame members.
The "Hall" was started in 1972 and, as an indication of Boone's dominance in the program, four residents were initiated into the Hall in that first year........Pete Canakes, Don Carlson, Don Kruse and Maurice Reid. Two more, Ray Burlingame and Nyall Davis were inducted in 1973. Everett Long joined them in 1984, Ken Berg in 1993, Peterson in 1994 and Clyde "Tuffy" Reid in  2007, for a grand total of 14. Most of the inductees were outstanding players but Ev Long was a long time team manager who guided his Boone Merchants to the state championship in both 1958 and 1960 while Don Kruse was a Commissioner of one of the Fast Pitch districts and successfully guided the state championship tournament Boone's way for 10 years.. Nyall (Curly) Davis was a well known Fast Pitch umpire.
Many of those inductees, of course, are now deceased.
Just for the record, Boone also boasted two  other state Fast Pitch championship teams,  Boone Patty Anne in 1934 and the Boone Nite Hawks in 1937.
Perhaps you're thinking negatively.......did Boone have the ONLY Fast Pitch team in Iowa......or were they just one of a very small handful?
No way! In those mentioned years, there were numerous outstanding teams all over the state and competition was extremely spirited. The fast-paced sport earned lots of followers and, believe it not, that good old ballpark, still standing, south of the swimming pool in Boone's McHose park was the host to the State Fast Pitch tournament, under the direction of Commissioner Kruse, for 10 years, 1949-59.
The crowds were always huge, concessionaires were happy and you had to get there very early to find a parking spot.
The Kornerman couldn't feel this story was complete without mentioning another storied Boone County Fast Pitch team. The Boxholm Swedes earned a gigantic history of their own with many seasons of championships and outstanding play.
Darrell Zunkel, a 1981 Hall of Fame inductee, Steve Fagan, inducted in 2007, and John Muench in 2012, as well as Dean and Gene Olson all "cut their teeth" with the Swedes and also played with other successful teams, including Boone teams, during their career. The Swedes were state runnerup in 1957.
The Kornerman remembers the Starks and the Peterson's and Chuck Will, Billy Hendricks, the Reutter's and the Reimers and if I remember right .....Webb Haase?
One final shoutout. The late Dave Temple was a popular Ames guy but he married a Boone girl and was always heavily involved in Fast Pitch in every way possible..........player, manager, promoter. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001 and was the epitome of the many who brought great dedication and inspiration to what was a period of great competition and excitement.

The Kornerman remembers it vividly. We were in the car coming home from the Iowa-Purdue football game and then it came on the radio.......something about an Iowa soldier from Boone being killed in Korea.
It was October 18, 1969 and, eventually,  we heard verification that the victim was Specialist Four Jack Morris, BHS-67......the Kornerman's cousin.
Jack was attached to 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment,7th Infantry Division, Company C.
He was killed when North Korean infiltrators ambushed his truck in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
That zone, supposedly, was a combat free zone but......some North Korean soldiers didn't get the memo. A couple other soldiers were killed also and it became an international incident because the rules of a free zone were badly broken. It was a real tragedy.
Jack's parents were George and Mary Morris and he had a brother, George (Buddy) Jr.. They are also now deceased.

SEEKING INFORMATION

     HELP!
Yes, there are times when Korner viewers ask for help from the Kornerman and our audience. We've had two such requests recently.
Marcia Bohlen Silha wrote from Austin, TX. "I remember listening to you 4 years. I hope you remember Karen, BHS-57, and Marcia Bohlen, BHS-61. Unfortunately, Karen passed away in 2020. It must have been fun 4 U! You were the best as far as we were concerned! I would really like it if U could look at the archives of the Boone News Republican and find something about my dad, Joe Bohlen, and Bohlen Real Estate and Insurance Agency. I know that John Nerem took over after dad retired, but I would really like to see something about my dad. If U can't find anything, that's O.K.! I just thought I'd give this a try."

Then there was nice call from Judith Otte of the Tama, FL area. Her dad, Walter Sellers, was a Boone High School 1938 graduate who passed away in 1956. Her mother died five years ago.
Walt Sellers came from a large family of five sisters and four brothers and Judith is related to some of the Atherton's. Betty Anderson Atherton, BHS-40, is an aunt of Judith's, while Bob Atherton, BHS-65, now of Denver, and Rick Atherton, BHS-70, now of Spencer, are cousins.
Betty Atherton is a sister of Judith's mother and now is a good opportunity to wish Betty the best. She still lives in Boone and is approaching her 100th birthday.
Judith is seeking information on her dad and, primarily, his ball playing. She said she thought he played out of Ogden on a Union Township team that won a tournament. A team picture has been lost and Judith said she thinks there was a pitcher on that team by the name of Diddy.
The 1938 BHS Scrollette, as it was called in those days, lists Walter Sellers as a senior who participated in the men's glee club, was a football manager and played all three years of intramural sports. Apparently his ball playing was well  known because another of his interests was listed simply as "kittenball" but the Scrollette doesn't indicate BHS had such a team.

EDITOR'S NOTE: As mentioned, the Kornerman, via the Korner, has a couple challenges. I've replied to both parties, telling them we were certainly willing to make note of their desires for information but could not assure them of great success. They were also told that any possible progress toward that would not appear quickly.
The Kornerman admits that I'm just not able to be as active as I used to be.  I don't know if the current News Republican has retained old archive material or not and the library may have such but it would be a stretch to think the Kornerman could make trips there and spend hours looking for the needed material as I was used to those many years ago. Eighty plus years have come way too soon because I really did enjoy researching various subjects like those that have been posed.
Perhaps there is some help available out there in Kornerland. If any viewers could add anything to what we have indicated, I and, more importantly, Marcia and Judith would be most appreciative.

From all the humorous material the Kornerman receives, here were a couple of the best from this week.
A picture showed young students with camera in hand "exploring" ancient ruins.......an outdoor telephone booth.
Then, "I'll never forget he look on the cashier's face when she scanned the bird seed and I asked, "how long does it take for the birds to grow once I plant them""
