THIS AND THAT

     (1) In reply to a recent mention by someone regarding guitar lessons, Larry Kelley, BHS-64, wrote, "Herb Forbell was my guitar teacher when I was about 12 years old. He gave lessons above Bacon Jewelers, if I  remember correctly. He, later, gave lessons in Ames at Eschbach's Music House on Main Street. I taught guitar there, as well, for a few years, at the same time he was there. He lived on the north side of 22nd street in Boone."
     (2) The Kornerman apparently committed an error. Replying to the recent mention about a BHS teacher who was credited with working with individual students who went on to radio announcing careers,Vern Modeland, BHS-50,wrote, "It was a HER (not a him). I remember her face and voice but can't remember who 'twas. It was not our class of 50's, Ms. Taylor. Older. And she did good work! Made talkers out of us mumblers a far way ahead of what is heard on the radio and TV today."
Which brings to mind a Kornerman thought. "Really....how many modern day singers are real singers? And, I'm referring to some that are very well publicized and that crowds go ga-ga over? Seems to me its all loud, loud, loud background music and I'm thinking that's to cover up the fact that some of these folks can't sing well at all. How can we tell? How many of them do we see sing without accompaniment? Seems to me lots of these stars (?) bury themselves behind lots of noise, jump around a bit and count their change after. Oh well, give them credit, they've made a great career out of "fooling" a segment of the public."

Often, those who follow high school athletics ask, "how come our team is in class etc. and some neighboring school is in another class?" Believe me, I know all about that because I worked with it for 30 years as a staff member of the Iowa Boys High School Athletic Association.
As long as I can remember, class assignments have been determined by a school's enrollment in classes 9, 10 and 11 from the year before the current year. For the 2019-20 school year, the enrollments from 2018-19 were used. Schools are then listed numerically......in 2018-19....West Des Moines Valley was number one with 2,201 students and Diagonal was last with 21 students. Then, there are so many schools in each class. If there are 48 schools in a certain sport the top 48 from Valley on down are in that class.
Yes, there are different numbers of schools in certain classes. In some cases, there may be 120 schools in a particular class. The object is to make things as equal, competitively, as possible. Its a tough task.
And yes, some times the ball (or count) doesn't bounce your way. For example, using that 48 school class, the 48th listed school would be Epworth,Western Dubuque with 668 students. They would probably love to be 49th and drop to the next lowest class. On the other hand, the 49th school is Newton with 651 and they may be very happy to be number one in their class rather than last in the class above them. Sometimes there can't be a perfect "world."
As long as I'm on this subject, I'll peer into some info you may find interesting. I remember when Boone was somewhere near that 48th largest school in the state marker. Now, I note that with 471 students in grades 9-11 they BHS is 62nd largest.
Behind the largest, Valley at 2,201 students, is Waukee number two at 2,147. Then, there's quite a drop off to number three, Des Moines Lincoln, at 1,793. In other words, Valley has 408 more students than Lincoln and that many more opportunities to entice possible student-athletes that could aid their sports programs into participating. Personally, the Kornerman has always felt, with that kind of an advantage, those top schools should always be a top contender for state championships in all sports. No excuses.
Ogden High is tied for 214th largest with 157 students and Madrid is tied for 227th with 148 students.
Remember the old CIC? Marshalltown is 25th at 1,093, Ames 30th at 1,026, Newton 49th at 651, Oskaloosa 61st at 476 and Grinnell 81st at 377.
Those metro suburbs besides Waukee?......Johnston is 4th at 1,682 and Ankeny both 13th and 14th. Ankeny Centennial is 13th at 1,269 and the other Ankeny 14th at 1,260.

Laurence Jensen, 97, passed away in Leesburg, VA last week.
In 1946, Laurence and his wife of 73 years, Dorothy, were married in Madrid in 1946, farmed in that area and raised their kids there until moving to California in 1986.
I knew the Jensen's well as a Boone Sports Editor (BNR) and Sports Director (KWBG) who covered the Madrid High School athletic exploits of son, Dick Jensen, and daughter, Barbara.
Wife Dorothy, son, Dick, and daughter, Barbara survive.
In my long years of covering Boone County athletics, Dick Jensen was one of the finest athletes ever. He was a tall, 6-8, talented basketball player but also a state champion cross country runner.
Then, at the State University of Iowa, Dick became an important member of a Hawkeye basketball team termed, by most, as the greatest in the school's history.
The 1969-70 Hawkeye team, coached by Hall of Famer Ralph Miller, did what seems almost impossible. They had a perfect 14-0 Big Ten Conference record as they stormed to the league championship by averaging over 100 points per game.
The team was called the six-pack because just six players dominated the playing time. John Johnson and Fred Brown later became NBA all-stars and the other contributors were Glenn Vidnovic, Chad Calabria, Jensen and Ben McGilmer.
Unfortunately, a team many felt were NCAA championship worthy lost, 104-103, to a last second tip-in by Pembrook Burroughs of Jacksonville in the regional semifinal. Burroughs was a 7-footer and was assisted by 7-2 Artis Gilmore. Both later also became NBA all stars.
In a consolation contest, the six pack defeated Notre Dame, 121-106.

HAVE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY WEEKEND

ATTENTION RAILROAD AFICIONADOS.........especially those who have an extra $400-$750 "hanging around." There's a special opportunity awaiting.
To cap off Omaha Railroad Days later this summer, the Union Pacific Railroad is offering rides on a train pulled by a 1940's steam engine that will end its run right here in good old Boone, Iowa.
The newly restored Big Boy No. 4014 steam train will carry passengers from Omaha to Boone on July 15. The passengers will then disembark in Boone and travel, via luxury motor coach, back to Omaha.
The Kornerman assumes that folks from "this end" could, if they desire, find their way to Omaha, and come back "home" to Boone to stay.
The Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in 1941. It was retired in 1961 after traveling  1,031,205 miles while in service. The railroad reacquired the locomotive in 2013 and sent it to Cheyenne, WY for restoration. The restored engine, the only operational Big Boy, left the shop earlier this month and is longer than two city buses and is powerful enough to pull 16 Statues of Liberty over a mountain range.
Passengers must be at least 18 years old to board this train and patrons of the Union Pacific museum will be offered an advance opportunity to purchase tickets which will become available to the public starting Tuesday, May 28. Proceeds benefit the UP Museum and range in price from $400-$750.
Omaha Railroad Days, July 13-14, consists of a series of train-themed events at locations throughout the Omaha area.

In our last edition, Larry Lindmark, BHS-64, told of his Boys State experience. That mention spurred some replies.
From the state of Washington, Ron Hopkins, BSH-59, wrote, "In 1958, Jim Moore, BHS-59, and I were selected to represent Boone at Boys State. I remember how proud I was to be selected, and that it was an important experience. I remember something of the tumult of arrival at Camp Dodge. But I am surprised how little I remember of the actual experiences. Not only was it 61 years ago but I was probably in a naive fog for the entire week."
Ron also wondered, "has your group found another coffee gathering spot since McDonald's closed?
The Kornerman answers, "we've been experiencing Burger King."
Gary Knox, UC-58, wrote, "I found my own "fish bowl" photo of the 1957 Boys State I was a part of. I remember that after the event,  Paul King, BHS-58, Bill Herman, BHS-58, and I had to give speeches to the local American Legion members about our experience there."
Gary enclosed a photo of the three that appeared in the Boone News Republican. What a young  looking trio.

Tony Crandall, BHS-59, Larry Kelley, BHS-64, and I, the Kornerman, BHS-53, all former KWBG employees, along with Larry Adams, BHS-65, have been attempting to make a list of ALL the former KWBG employees from its inaugural date of March 2, 1950, to the current crew. Gosh, that's almost 70 years.
We have a pretty extensive list, much of it due to Larry Adams research, but as times passes, we continue to add more bits and pieces.
Tony wrote, "there was Bob Sharp in the 1957-60 era and Harold Higbee was one of the earliest employees.....1949-50.....when the station studios were located in the Boone National Building."
The Kornerman says, "that is news to me. I was unaware that the station, at one time, was in the Boone National Building. The studios were located in the former Citizens Bank building in more recent years of course."
Some day soon, Larry and I are getting together to peruse our list, maybe shed a tear or two in memory and probably laugh a lot about things we experienced in our days at K-Dub.

TEACHER REMEMBERED

Vern Modeland, BHS-50, recently paid tribute to a Boone High speech teacher but couldn't remember his name. He credited the individual for his work with several students who went on to radio announcing careers.
Ken Aldag, BHS-54, may have come to the rescue. He wrote, "it was probably Glenn Pinkham. As I recall, Mr. Pinkham had a distinctive, silky bass voice which I'm sure had an influence on his students."
The Kornerman says, "what I remember about Glenn were the distinct glasses he wore which seemed a bit different than normal. He was an enthusiastic teacher as I recall."
K-----K
We continue to add more names as we attempt to recall all the former KWBG employees we can come up with. Larry Adams gave us a strong foundation with several pages of names and now, he's added a few more......Dorothy Moode and Bev Johnson...... who were involved in the sales department. Larry Kelley, who is doing much of the work in this compilation of names, has also made a recent addition.....Bill West.
I just happened to think of Hal Mann to add if he's not already been listed.
Why do we do  this? I don't know other than just perusing the list and recalling some memories.
I suppose sometime we'll release what we think is a complete list.
K-----K
Great to hear from Larry Lindmark, BHS-63, one of many that were members of one of my Babe Ruth baseball teams during 25 years of great fun.
We mentioned at least once in the Korner how proud we were of BHS grad, Tim Orr, BHS-79, who recently retired as Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard after 10 years of service as Iowa's number one guardsman. All told, Tim served the guard for 40 years and his wife, Suzanne, was a member of the guard for 27 years. The Lindmark's, Eldien and Lanz families were all related to the Orrs.
There's going to be a retirement ceremony for Col. Tim at Camp Dodge on May 23.
Then, Larry also provided some memories of the Boys State program. He wrote, "In 1962, Ted Gifford and I, along with Dick Pohl of United Community, were selected by the Boone American Legion to attend the annual Hawkeye Boys State at Camp Dodge. A total of 720 Iowa students, who had completed their junior year of high school, attended this week long event to study and participate in the workings of our government and to promote citizenship. I still have a "fish bowl" photo of all the participants wearing their Boys State t-shirts. At that time, Percy Barry served as the chairperson of the Boone Legion's education committee and as our contact with Boys State. Its interesting to note that the program began in Illinois in 1935 and was started in Iowa in 1938. It was actually a response to the Nazis forming youth groups in Germany. I noted that Bucky O'Conner was listed as one of the camp's early directors. Could that be former Boone High teacher/coach Bucky O'Conner?"
The Kornerman replies, "I assume so. Sounds like something Bucky might be involved in. There's also a Girls State which started in Iowa in the late 40's/early 50's. Lots of Boone High students have been participants in the events last 60 years or so. A real wonderful program."

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Gail Hull, 81, Nevada. Formerly of Boone. Earned a DMACC degree. Worked at Bourns in Ames for 34 years and then was an administrative assistant for Youth and Shelter Services until her retirement. Two daughters survive including Vicki Lonergan of Boone. A brother and two sisters also survive.

MORE ABOUT THE HOLST BARBER SHOP

Tony Crandell, BHS-59, wrote, "my great uncle Henry Fibaker or Fibiker....dad's uncle.....cut hair there for years in the 50's. If I am remembering rightly, uncle Henry moved from the Crary Hotel barber shop to the Boone National Bank building, second floor I think, then to the Hotel Holst which was a three chair shop with a shoe shine stand. All three chairs were busy every time I was there. I don't know whether Henry managed the shop or just worked there. The shop was sandwiched between the Daniel Boone Tavern on the southwest corner and the hotel lobby."
K-----K
Ozark Vern Modeland, BHS-50, wrote, "I took guitar lessons in the 1940's from some man who taught them evenings in a basement location at the Holst. Anyone else remember him? I failed, by the way. Too many strings, not enough fingers."
Then back to our recent discussion about former KWBG employees etc. Vern wrote, "did I, in the past, add to the list that Bob Graham, who became a WHO announcer later, then on to KOLR in Springfield after we both moved this a-way, was the Program Director who hired me for one of the two stints I did on KWBG. I later returned to do the night shift for quite some time around 1952 or so with Wayne  H. Olsen of Story City as my license-holding engineer and proclaimed by he and me as sports reader since I didn't know the names like he did. And, I assisted Wayne Spangler at Perry when KWBG had a studio there. We were on remote from 2-4 in the afternoon, as I remember. He was selling more than announcing. I did that part. Spangler was also titled Program Director for a time. He came from Ames and later his younger brother followed on. Can't remember his first name. All of this was while the station was out at the school house on the gravel road to the Ledges. It looks like there were more of us who broke into or at least moved through KWBG than most stations. And, there  were, at least, four of us, Graham, Olsen, me and Ev Hickman, BHS-54, who went on to WHO by the time TV expanded staffs in the Des Moines area, circa mid to late 1950's. Why so many? We were better than most else I guess. That was, in big part, the work of the BHS teacher who moonlighted as a speech coach for KWBG. I can't remember her name either. Hey, I'm old."
K-----K
The Kornerman says, "excuse me if I take advantage of the mention of the K-Dub studio by the tower, south on Ledges road, to espouse some memories of that location, some you've probably heard from me before. I remember (1) the time the tower was being painted and I had a lovely car with a white top. There was a slight breeze and that white top got "riddled" with black specks all over it. (2) the mouse family that always seemed to appear walking across the table when I was attempting to deliver a newscast. (3) the Sunday Rhetta Shaw program of inspiring poems, other readings and music that she insisted be done in the "great outdoors" when the weather cooperated. (4)  June Burge cooking a nice meal, fried foods and all, in the control room while hubby, Dale, did his night shift as an announcer. What an aroma! and finally (5) that infamous evening when Tom Quinlan and I teamed up for a newscast sponsored by a women's dress shop. The commercial was all about "bras half off" and, for some reason, that mention triggered extended giggling that neither of us could quickly quell. The newscast was a disaster."

BOONE CONNECTED DEATHS: Dale Baker, 75, Boone. OHS-62. Was an Iowa National Guardsman for 14 years before working 30 years for John Deere. Married Nancy Hall in 1978. After his retirement, he worked for Mordini Chevrolet in Ogden and the couple managed the Leonard Good community center in Ogden. Survivors include his wife, Nancy, a daughter, Jill Harrington, and a son, Mike Flugstad, all of Boone and two sisters including Donna Christensen of Ogden........Gladys Moore, 90, Boone. Boone area survivor is a daughter, Jeri Frank of Boone.........Faye Crabtree Latham, 88, Sun City, AZ and formerly of Des Moines. Born in Madrid. MHS-48. Married Dale Latham in 1948. A son survives........Rosemary Bertini Gibbons, 90, Madrid. Grew up in Madrid. Married Charles Gibbons Jr. in 1952. The couple lived in Madrid their entire married life.

HE GOT HIS HAIR CUTS AT THE HOLST HOTEL

Gary Knox, UC-58, wrote, "you mentioned the Hotel Holst. My dad took me there for some haircuts when I was growing up. The barber shop seemed huge. I wonder if there are any photos of the shop or interior of the hotel. The Holst's owned farms in Boone County. One of their farms was the next farm north of ours on highway 17. A nice house was built on the property for the Sundberg's who farmed the land. I had no idea what business arrangements they had with the Holst's. I worked for Mr. Sundberg stacking hay bales in a super hot barn hay mow one summer."
The Kornerman responds, "without hesitating, I would say with certainly that one of our good Boone resource folks......Larry Adams or Ed Mondt particularly........have photos inside and out of that hotel."

Larry Kelley, BHS-64, wrote, "thanks for sending me the list of names of people at BG over the years. There are still two or three others not on the list. One, a tiny lady doing the news reporting around 1976. Another is Robin (?) Roberts and he also reported the news. Another guy was heavy set who was a news reporter. I think the lady lived in Ames. Can you remember any of these?"
Larry also reported he has a new email address.........LDK@JAKmusic.net.
The Kornerman says,"Larry was responding to that huge, and we thought, rather complete list of former KWBG employees provided by Larry Adams, BHS-65. We had sent a copy of the list to Larry.

WHAT A RESOURCE

Recently, a young lady approached me with, "I understand you might be able to provide some information for me."
She was seeking some history of the old Boone Hotel Holst.
She caught me off guard but knowing that I have shelved a few such historical items regarding my hometown, I thought I could probably help her.
She provided her name, phone number, address and I emphasized I didn't know how long such an investigation would take. She didn't seem to have any particular deadline.
As I analyzed the situation, I determined that I would take the easy way out. I was sure, whatever info I might have, it would be overwhelmed by what the long historical fingers of Larry Adams, BHS-65, could provide.
I contacted Larry, we met at the library and he pulled out an inch thick file of information on the Hotel Holst.....its history and all.
It was way too much to make copies of etc. etc. so to make a long story shorter, I got Larry and the lady to exchange numbers and addresses and I'm sure they will be setting up a meeting very shortly. Shortly because Larry indicated he would just be in Boone for one more week before his annual trek north to return as Curator of the William R. Higgins Jr. Foundation, Inc. of the National Bank Note Museum and Library, a position he's held for several years each summer in Okoboji.
But, there's even more to this story.
While Larry and I were meeting, and the fact he was aware that Larry Kelley and I have been attempting to "track down" all the former KWBG employees we could think of, he pulled out no fewer that six full pages of names of former K-Dub employees.......some with their date of death and/or where some are located now. Wow!!
Aren't we so lucky in Boone, Iowa to have such a resource? There are others......I think of Gretchen Otis and Ed Mondt...... but Larry, in particular, stands out. He is a real treasure trove of Boone historical information. Probably most communities have such an individual but Larry's the best and I'm thankful we, in Boone, have him.
K-----K
Speaking of "bringing folks together," you may remember that in a recent edition we mentioned hearing from Bob Atherton, BHS-65, from Denver seeking contact information on Tim Croxen, BHS-59.
We had mentioned Tim in a previous Korner, Bob saw that and was interested in making a connection. The two are related but had not been in contact for some time and Bob's mother, Betty, 98 years of age, was very much interested in making contact with Tim.
Tim's phone number that I provided must have been an old one but I was able to provide Tim's address so I still hope a connection can be made.
Bob wrote, "When I called my mom, she had a surprise when Roger Dutton, BHS-63, called her from Illinois. I think she said either he had read the info in the Korner or Tom Peterson, BHS-67, had contacted him. Ruth and George Dutton (Roger's parents) and my mom are related on her side. I hadn't talked to him in a long time either. Sounded like he was doing pretty well. It gave me a chance to tell my wife, Bonnie, about all of his (Roger's) athletic accomplishments, as she has never met him. Small world!!"
The Kornerman says, "boy, a grand slam......Bob, Betty and Bonnie Atherton, Tim Croxen, Roger Dutton and Tom Peterson......all related but, in some cases, not in recent contact. Hopefully, they now will be."

Peterson Construction until 1994. Survivors include his dad, Merlin "Pete" Peterson, four kids, a step-son and three sisters........Bill Bogue, 72, Ogden. Grew up in South Dakota. Lost a 12-year battle with leukemia. He married Sue Carroll in 1970. An ISU grad, he worked for ISU extension for 29 years prior to retirement in 2004. Survivors include his wife, Sue, of Ogden, two adult children, two brothers and a brother-in-law.........Marco Antonio Pineda Encalada, 58, Ames. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT

The Kornerman knows that he's mentioned this many times before but........
It gives me great joy to be a conduit for Korner readers........a channel that offers to "bring together" folks the years have "come between" without any contact. Quite often its youthful buddies who have gone their separate ways or even relatives who have "lost track."
In our last edition, Tim Croxen's, BHS-59, name appeared and that drew a call from Bob Atherton, BHS-65, out Denver way. Bob said his family and Tim's were related but there had been no real contact for some time and,"my mother, Betty, is 98 years old, sharp as a tack, living at Eastern Star and is real interested in getting in contact with Tim. Can you provide me any info?"
Through the years, mostly via the Korner and last year's Mo Kelley Day, I've accumulated quite a list of addresses, phone numbers of Booneites and am most happy to help answer such questions if possible.
I called Bob back with Tim's address and phone number and it gave this old guy a good feeling that this gig of ours, hopefully, renewed a "lost" relationship.
Its also interesting how one thing can lead to another. In our conversation, I learned that Bob had an insurance business which he sold but,"I still dabble in insurance." He also mentioned that brother, Rick, BHS-70, and his bride, no longer live in Boone. They're settled down in Spencer. Didn't know that.
Another part of the Korner that I'm especially proud of is the death notices we provide, especially these days when we seriously lack much available local news.
That's a sad part of our offering but seems to have increasing importance. Many of our "outside" viewers discover the passing of friends and even relatives through that effort.

John Kueck, BHS-61, seems always ready to add info to the Korner. He wrote, "add Robert Barry, BHS-56, to your list of KWBG alums. Also, you mentioned Floyd Killian was a KWBG announcer and married to a Boone girl. That girl is Shirlee Schwein, BHS-61."
     Thanks John.

Three questions: (1) what disease did cured ham actually have? (2) How did the man who made the first clock know what time it was? (3) Can you cry under water?
