Its a Fact

Oh, my gosh! That facebook rumor we mentioned briefly in the last edition is no joke. A Boone Elks club and the old, abandoned Boone News Republican building on Keeler Street are both, "alive."
It was no secret that a local group has been  attempting to get a Boone Elks Club "back in business." At one time, there was a Boone Elks Club and, I remember, it was very active. But, through the years, interest apparently faded and so did the club, which was orginally founded in 1900.
A meeting has been set for January 29 at 2 p.m. at the Boone County Historical Center building to discuss the possibility of reinvigorating the local club. Those with any interest are urged to attend.
Meantime, a confident local group, the Boone Elks Committee, has purchased the old BNR building as a potential site for the club. The building has been unoccupied since the BNR moved out in 2004.
The Kornerman, of course, was a daily occupant of that building from 1958-70 and even a few years later, 2000-04 while an employee of the BNR. Lots of memories there.

Karen wrote, "I was surprised there were no responses regarding your mention of Dale Oliver. I wasn't raised in Boone and you didn't say he was from Boone.......only that you "put him on the air," each Sunday morning. I searched him on Google and came up with nothing. On, "Find a Grave," I did find a Rev. Dale E. Oliver, who passed away in 1994 in Keokuk. I also found a Rev. Dale Oliver on "Mormon Family Search, 1940 census. Do you think this is "your man?"
The Kornerman says, "It sounds to me like this may be the man I had in mind. I believe he was the Evangelical Free Church minister at the time when it was located southwest, across from the high school."
