UNEXPECTED RESPONSES

A couple editions back, I noted that Tom Tays, BHS-78, had thanked the Kornerman for the support afforded Boone Campus Des Moines Area Community College in a recent Korner.
I wrote something to the effect that, "I appreciated the note and its nice to know someone is out "there."
I certainly never intended that to be a "pity party" or begging for replies. Nevertheless, I did get some response.
Texan Alan Dannatt, BHS-66 wrote, "we're here and appreciate everything you do" and John Hinz, BHS-64, apologized for not being "in touch" for awhile.
Then there was Doug McLeod, BHS-58, who wrote this from Marana, AZ. "sounds like you're feeling like the Maytag repair man (anybody remember him?). I'm sure the letter K on a lot of keyboards shows more than average wear. Everybody seems to blame everything on either Covid or the election or climate change so stand strong. You and Storm Lake are about all that's left of the Fourth Estate in Iowa. Down here we have the Tombstone Epitaph. I'm tired of saying it, and I understand why it is, but I can't imagine a town of 12,000 without a humming newspaper. You're an irreplaceable asset, Mo, and way more than a park bench."
Spike Condon, BHS-75, reported that he and Lori are back from Germany and is teaching Army Aviation Flight school as a Blackhawk instructor pilot at Fort Rucker, AL. He's been doing that in Germany and Alabama for some 30 years now.
He wrote, "I'm so sorry its taken so long to write you. I want to say a big Thank You for your bi-weekly Boone News. If it were not for you and you only, I wouldn't be able to keep up with the local news. Lori and I will be coming back to Boone in mid-October to see our dad's and visit with family and friends. Got to have a Belluci's pizza also. Don't think your column goes unnoticed! Far from it!!
P.S. Spike's dad, the famous Vern Condon, BHS-49, recently spent some time at Mercy in Des Moines for a partial hip replacement. He's in rehab at the Eastern Star Home, Courtyard Terrace, 715 West Third Street, Boone, Iowa 50036 and is "doing well." He's limited to two visitors at a time. A get well card would be very nice.

Great news late last week for a former Toreador.
Ryan Moorman, BHS-2002, the son of Terry and Marsha Moorman of Boone was announced as a 2021 Wartburg College athletic Hall of Fame inductee.
A 2006 Wartburg graduate, he was a four-year starting pitcher for the Knights. While collecting a career record of 23-8 with 10 complete games, 203 strikeouts, and a 3.27 earned run average in over 250 innings pitched, Moorman earned four consecutive All-Conference selections, including three first team honors and a pair of All-Region laurels.
A member of four consecutive Iowa Conference championship teams, he ranks among the top ten in many pitching categories in the Wartburg baseball record book, including the second best opponent batting average (.171) which was recorded in 2005, leading the Knights to a regional title and college world series appearance. During his senior season in 2006, Moorman tallied four complete games with two shutouts in 83.2 innings, finishing second in the conference with 61 strikeouts.
These days, Ryan works as the Vice President of Boone based Rolfes Co. He and his wife, Melissa, have two children, Stella and Hendrix.
The Kornerman is glad he returned to Boone.
