TIME WILL TELL

Remember that old phrase, "never the twain shall meet?"
Hey, I'm old. Why can't things be crystal clear and easy? No, instead, the Kornerman faces a real conundrum situation.
Here's the skinny. First, I'm so excited about many exciting future community projects.....the new elementary school, the proposed new wellness center, all of the new housing sprouting up in the community. That's all fine and good. Yet, these are not things that occur overnight. Time is involved. So, each day we get closer to these wonderful things to look forward too, I and others my age are also getting older.....day after day after day. So, a question remains. Will we have the good favor of watching these wonderful positives develop or will the quick passage of time derail such dreams. I guess some day we'll know.

Our recent mention of the preliminary census figures drew a response from Richard Longworth, BHS-53. He wrote, "if you look at Boone census data on Wikipedia, you'll see that the town passed 12,000 about the time we were born, in the mid-30's. It was 12,373 in 1940. Since then, it's only varied by a few hundred, never lower than 12,000, never higher than 13,000. This is astonishing stability. I wonder if there's any other town where the population has stayed so stable over the decades. As you note, places in Dallas County and closer to Des Moines are exploding. So many other small towns are shrinking. People move into Boone, of course, and other people leave, but the departures always seem to balance out the arrivals. There's a secret to this stability, and I wonder what it is."

Good to hear from Ken Aldag, BHS-54. He wrote, "your report on Ev Hickman indicated you weren't sure about his reporting at KWBG. Ev, who was one of my best friends at BHS and later at Drake University, dorm roommate for three years and best man at my wedding, started working for BG about 1953, our junior year at BHS. He arranged for many  of us, in speech classes, to do radio plays on the air. After graduation in '54, he attended Drake U., but would return to Boone on weekends to do disc jockey, news reading etc..I would hang out at the station on Sunday afternoons with him. He started working for WHO, as I recall, in his sophomore year at Drake. He was a great friend for about 70 years (we first met in junior high). We'll be making the trip back to Boone from California to be at the memorial service."
EDITOR'S NOTE:  Ev Hickman died November 21, 2019, at 83 years of age. There will be a gravesite service at 10 a.m. at Linwood Cemetery on September 4, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone.
