SEEKING SOME HELP

Verne Lyon, BHS-61, has informed us that his class is undertaking a special project regarding a former classmate, Jerry Converse. Jerry was killed while operating intelligence gathering equipment during the 1967 Gulf war when the Israelites attacked the ship he was on.

Verne wrote, "I helped Iowa State University recognize him on the Hall of Fame in the Memorial Union on the ISU campus. He is also recognized at Camp Dodge. We think he should be recognized in his home town."

According to Verne, another classmate, Gene Keys, is coming to Boone, and he and Verne are scheduled to appear before the Boone City Council at 6 p.m. on March 20 to make a case for some type of permanent honor and/or remembrance of Jerry by the city of Boone.

Bob Atherton, BHS-65, reported from Colorado that Kae Nelson Schmickley, BHS-56, several years ago, had sent to his mother, Betty Anderson Atherton, BHS-40, some historical articles about P.T. Nelson's and Sons lumber yard at 923 Story Street (remember?). Bob said his mother had worked for Nelson's after high school through World War II.

"There are some cool news clips from 1929 and 1943 about the Boone Housing Guild and Builders and lumbermen in Boone. Also, lots of Boone names and pictures," Bob said. He indicated that it "looks like Pabst Brewing Company owed some Story Street property and the lumber yards positioning around the train station was interesting."

He concluded that the "Nelson's were very good to my mom, especially when dad was overseas."

The Kornerman says there were lots of ads for Nelson's showing they were able to provide lots of materials for remodeling or building, and even a story from Community Magazine, April, 1929 edition, featuring the history and growth of a "substantial Boone enterprise" which had come to Boone from Sweden.

We're at a stage in our life and the Korner's life where it seems we lose potential viewers on an almost daily basis. Just learned that Gary Knox, United HS-58, passed recently in Iowa Falls. Quite often, through the years of the Korner, we heard interesting material provided by Gary concerning Boone and area history. We'll miss his insights.

Old Vern won't give up. Vern Modeland, BHS-50, is still searching for information regarding a weather balloon incident in Boone many years ago. He wrote, "somebody please come forward to recall that incident I wrote about. I can't find a record of it, except in my mind. I have no relatives left in Boone nor anyone from the good old class of '50 to send to the library to search the archives. Richard Longworth's family lived a block south of there on South Boone Street. Perhaps he has an idea of where to look or even might remember the incident."

He concluded, "Fading mind (apparently) wants to know."
