There's a lot of movement these days in our neighborhood on South Jackson Street.
Of course, the new Ledges Elementary School is just behind our house and much of the movement is due to construction of that new facility. Hancock Drive, just a half/block south of us is actually getting more than its share of traffic as truck after truck after truck, and smaller vehicles as well, are constantly traveling back and forth on that street into and out of the building area.
Perhaps less noticed by most is the very heavy traffic on South Jackson and then west onto Hancock. As five year residents of the area, we've determined that the entire east half of north Boone follows that path......down South Jackson and west onto Hancock for a final destination of DMACC, perhaps Fareway or east, out of town. I guess those northeast Boone residents feel that's a shorter way to their south or western destination than going over to Story or Marshall and down.
Obviously, some kind of signage will, ultimately, be needed at the intersection of South Jackson and Hancock, especially when the school is completed and drivers are coming from the east or from the west down Hancock. That's in addition to those coming south on Jackson and turning onto Hancock.
Also, to add to all this, it doesn't take much thought to determine that when the road is constructed past the new school and on out to Airport Drive, that will be a favored route for many Boone residents from Hancock or South Jackson heading west in an Ames or Des Moines direction.
By the way, the Boone Community School District Board recently announced that bids for that Hancock Drive Extension project will be accepted until September 29, 2022. Then, on October 10, 2022, consideration of the bids received and the awarding of contracts for the project or other action will take place.
Work on the project shall commence as soon as possible after award of the contract and is scheduled for substantial completion on or before July 28, 2023. Final grading and seeding is scheduled for substantial completion on or before September 16, 2023.

The new elementary building and also the new multi-purpose home for the Futures and Boone HSAP building now have their official names, as recently announced by the School Board. Committees were formed to obtain name ideas and a community vote was completed. The end result was that the School Board received recommendations and approved the following names, Ledges Elementary School for the new Elementary project and Crossroads Learning Hub for the Futures Alternative High School and Boone HSAP program.
