FAIRNESS
Look......its been no secret that I, the Kornerman, have been harsh, on occasion, with my criticism of our current, most available print media offerings.
However, fairness is an important personal asset so, on this occasion, I have nothing but praise for a story in the most recent edition of the Boone News Republican. It was great.
Even drawing a main banner line, the story was about the Toreador band and their wonderful trip to California to participate in the Rose Bowl parade of 1963.
The well written story by Sara Jordan-Heintz was lengthy, featured almost step-by-step coverage of the experience with band members quotable reactions and a front page photo included.
For the month of August, the Boone County Historical Society Museum, at 602 Story Street, is featuring an exhibit in its lobby dedicated to that band. On Pufferbilly parade day, Saturday, March 6, thirty members of the band will be "in the parade" via a flatbed trailer and from 2 to 4 p.m. on that day, the BCHS will be hosting an open house to give attendees an opportunity to view various trip momentos and even visit with band alumni.
It will be a great day of special remembrance for the band and the Boone community.

ANOTHER TRY
Well, I did it..........AGAIN.
In several past years, I, the Kornerman, have tried to induce the Des Moines Register to provide any kind of coverage to the Super National Races held each year in Boone. Naturally, I contacted the Register sports department.
I threw all the statistics at them.....the fact that thousand's of past winners and participants and their families come from all over the U.S. and Canada (27 states and over 900 pre-entries a year ago) to participate in a full week of top national racing. To them it really is "an annual Racin' Vacation" for the entire family AND the result is felt not just in Boone but all over central Iowa, via hotels, motels, restaurants, gas stations and camp grounds.
I never received a reply.
I decided to make another try this year but with a different approach. I emailed Courtney Crowder who is a "Register Iowa Columnist and senior writer." She's an excellent writer and leans toward human interest type stories so I wrote, "that would work.....many human interest stories could be derived by simply talking to these race participants or family members......finding out why they save all year to bring the entire family from many distant locations to little old Boone Iowa for this event. Lots of story possibilities there.
I emailed on July 22.......no reply as of August 2.
To be completely honest, the enormous amount of coverage the Register gives to the Knoxville Raceway races have stirred my consternation in comparison to the lack of Super National coverage.
I'm not completely naive. I understand the racing at Knoxville is a different brand AND the purse money involved is higher.......money, money, money is, so often, the decision maker on so many things, probably including media race coverage. I can't even display how their schedule and attendance compare. Still, there surely are many things that are offered by the Super Nationals that are superior or, at least, equal. I can't say the Register's coverage of the Super Nationals is equal or, for that matter, even available.
Just in case you're wondering.........no, I have no real bias connection to the Super Nationals or the Boone Speedway. Years ago we took grandkids to some of the races but I'm, by no means, a die hard or consistent fan.
I simply think its one of many great assets our community has, providing great entertainment for area race fans and a few extra dollars for area businesses. This 75 year resident firmly supports anything that I think is an asset to the Boone community.
