For the benefit of those of you who were unable to attend my recent talk, BOONE-My Kind of Town, I am, in the Korner, on occasion, offering some of the stories that were presented at that time.
Mary Ellen Dowd, BHS-50, (no relation to Mamie Doud) always wanted to be an actress and she became very successful on Broadway and in movies. Known as M'el Dowd, perhaps her top success was portraying, Morgan LeFay, the lead actress in the well known production of Cabaret. She also appeared in various films, including one with Bing Crosby and another with Henry Fonda. Shortly before her death, her final appearance was on the long running TV series, Law and Order.
Believe it or not, Ally McBeal is married, in real life, to Indiana Jones and there is a Boone connection.
Ron Flockhart and Kay Honohan were Boone High Schools graduates in 1950. They went on to college, were married, had a daughter, Calista, and Ron's work took the family to various U.S. locations. Calista was another who desired an acting career and she, eventually, secured the job of being Ally McBeal on a five-year TV series that was very successful. In fact, the series, itself, won numerous awards and Calista was honored individually with a Golden Globe etc. etc.
Calista and Harrison Ford eventually became a couple and, perhaps wisely, dismissed the Hollywood scene for life in the Wyoming area. That was a successful move....the couple has been together now for 20 years. Calista has been satisfied limiting her career while Harrison, of course, has continued his movie portrayal of Indiana Jones.
Calista Flockhart was not a Boone High School graduate and never lived here. However, the grandparents, the Flockhart's and the Honohan's, remained in the area and during her younger years, she came to Boone frequently in the summer months to visit her relatives here.
