SURPRISE!!!!!

Richard Longworth, BHS-53, tells us that a friend of his in the western Chicago suburb of Downers Grove was surprised recently.

Near his home, an old Boone fire engine, circa 1956, appeared in a neighbor's front yard. Still had Iowa plates.

In further study, it was discovered that the owner is an Iowa State University student named Kevin who, reportedly, bought the engine in Boone and brought it back to his Chicago home grounds to be hired out for Fourth of July parades, picnics and the like.

Kevin says the fire engine still works, in that it starts easily and runs smoothly but, unhappily, can only be turned off with great effort.

That's all Richard knows.........maybe someone "out there" can add to the story.

The Kornerman understands that Tom Hokel, BHS-65, has been trying to make contact but fears that his emails have gone to my junk file and have been overlooked.

I fear this happening and do try to scan the junk file "just in case" but, obviously some may not be noticed.

Anyway, Tom lured Mike Loehrer into "passing on" an email to the Korner.

Tom wrote, "I was definitely getting concerned about you. Thank goodness you're O.K. I remember Jim Miles, BHS-64, worked at Boyds south and also Ames ISU Campus stores. I could walk to that store when I was going to ISU. I loved Chocolate malts and sundaes with vanilla ice cream, topped with hot fudge and marshmallow. Those were the days weren't they? A lot of Boone businesses helped many of us get through college. I worked summers, and a few Christmas breaks at Percival Refrigeration and Manufacturing Co. as did many classmates. President Claire Perkins was a big supporter. Stay healthy and keep up the good work."

Progress seems slow but steady in my bout with recent foot surgery. Had an appointment Monday and healing remains "very good" according to the surgeon. Another appointment in two weeks and, hopefully, it will be my last.

Still using a walker but am looking forward to a more normal existence in the coming weeks. Thanks for asking.
