BOONE CONNECTED DEATH

      Derald James Swisher, 93, Des Moines. Born in Boone County. Madrid HS-47. Drafted by the New York Giants as a pitcher but service during the Korean War prevented any further pro baseball aspirations. Earned degrees from Iowa Teachers (now UNI) and the University of South Dakota. A promoter of the IOWA GIRL, he took countless young ladies to state tournaments in all sports. Four of his girls basketball teams appeared in the state tournament, Grand Community in 1960, Twin Cedars of Bode in 1963 and 1964 and Knoxville in 1975. He and his wife, Emily, enjoyed their retirement years in Arizona. His wife, Emily, and a daughter survive. Services at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
