Phyliss Joan Hitsman Sturdivant, 97, Madrid. Born in Boone. Attended school in Luther until 1943 when the family moved to the Madrid area. MHS-45. Earned a degree in interior design from LaSalle University. Married Paul L.Sturdivant in Madrid in 1947. Phyliss was a member of Ruth's Circle, PEO, a volunteer at Hospice House and Reiman Gardens in Ames. The Iowa Hospice Association honored her in 2003 as "Volunteer of the Year." Living in Madrid for 46 years, Ruth and Paul enjoyed golfing, playing in the couples and women's league. Joan retired from Younkers, after 20 years, in 1988 and the couple then moved to Ames. A son survives. Services in Madrid.
