PETE AND MIKE

Pete Kostelnick, BHS-2005, continues to make progress after the terrible car accident he was recently involved in. Here's the latest from Pete himself.

"We made it back to Flagstaff today from the hospital in Colorado Springs. I'd be okay with not doing a drive like that again. I've never taken pain meds but it's the only way to just get through the day right now. It's already so humbling to not be allowed (or able) to walk, which will be the next two or so months. On the bright side, I'm very thankful for @linds_nelson89 for taking care of me and letting me stay with her while I recover. I don't know how she does it with everything else she has to do, but sometimes, amazing people can just do everything. Secondary, it really sucks canceling running plans for the rest of the year, including Spartathlon in Greene next month, but when I am able to run again I'll never take it for granted."

Pete, of course, for several years now, has been one of the nation's, actually one of the world's foremost long distant endurance runners with numerous challenges conquered, including that famous record setting run from coast to coast a few years ago.

His parents, Charles and Clare Kostelnick, still live in Boone.

The Kornerman had a surprise a couple weeks ago when Mike Pace emailed that he wanted to come to Boone for a luncheon visit. That was accomplished last Wednesday.

In case you're unaware, Mike, early in his career, worked two different times at KWBG radio. When I served as Station Manager in the late 60's, we needed an announcer and I hired Mike from the Iowa State University campus. He was going to school and it was his first job in radio.

To make a long story shorter, after his stints in Boone, he eventually landed in the Des Moines Metro area and has become quite the celebrity, through the years, via his work.

He has had jobs with several Des Moines radio stations but is probably best known for his 20 year position as the host of the twice weekly Powerball drawings. He told me when he started there were six or seven states involved but eventually it grew nationwide. Although the program was seen, nationwide, each Wednesday and Saturday evenings, his work was done right from Des Moines.

Mike is 78 now and has slowed his work schedule, but he still does a well known Sunday morning television show, the Iowa Realty Home Show on channel five, a show he's done for many years.

It was great to see him and reminisce for an hour and a half about our time together in Boone and his successful career.
