SOME OLD AND SOME NEW

Let's back track a bit with some more info regarding Boone motels thanks to Bob Powers, BHS-79. Bob wrote, "I saw your posts about the Topper motel, and your corrections. Yes, there was a hotel/motel in the area of Subway. It was pretty much right where Subway North is now, just north of the Century Link phone company, and it was run by the Mahood's and called the Shangri-La. My former mother-in-law, Lucille Sterner, would fill in and stay in the residence part of the motel when the Mahood's were out of town. I made many visits there while she would be filling in for them. It was kind of fun seeing how she worked the switchboard that was there for the dozen or so rooms. They would have to call the switchboard to get outside lines. The switchboard was just inside the front door of the residence. This was all in the late 80's I believe. I know when the Mahood's sold it, they moved to a house on Greene Street in the 500 block on the east side of the street."

Some news from the Boone County Historical Society.
Board member John Stephenson reported, "I have been particularly moved by the remembrance funds that folks have setup on their own. I've seen close to $2500 in donations from those and its humbling to see."
Looking forward, the big news is the annual membership meeting, which is scheduled for January 25 at 6:30 in the basement of the building at 602 Story Street.
Looking back, some meetings of the board have been conducted and here are some highlights from those meetings.
November 2, 2021 = Harrie Vonk was selected to replace Mike Hammond on the board.
December 7, 2021 = There was a discussion about the naming of the organization. It was determined that the building at 602 Story would be referred to as the Boone History Center, while any business conducted by the board or membership would be referred to as the Boone County Historical Society business.
The IRS obligation is up to date and the elevator has been updated.
Autumn Weaver has been given permission to teach sign language in the center's resource room after hours on Tuesday and Thursday's. She will limit  attendance to 15-20 people and charge $10 per class, with half of that being donated to the BCHS.
The soup supper, supported by about 100 people, brought in $659 with $125 to the quilt raffle.
Membership renewal letters have been sent to current members.
