There's news that the Boone County Hospital is in the midst of some remodeling, some refreshing of the main floor, which hasn't had a "newer" look for over 20 years.
First, my personal endorsement. I, the Kornerman, thankfully, have never had real lengthy stays in our hospital but those I have had, make me proud, proud of the exceptional and compassionate care that's been received. I can't imagine our community without this wonderful asset. We are so lucky to have it.
Its history is long, too long to delve into all of it. However, I am going to provide some limited details that viewers might find interesting or, perhaps, even spur some memories.
In 1900, a prominent Boone financier, Samuel Moore, purchased land for a new home. However, he learned that a local railroad worker, who had passed, could have been saved if a hospital were available. So, instead of using the land for his personal home, he made it available for construction of a hospital and named it after his mother, Eleanor Moore Hospital.
In 1919, Boone County voted to acquire the hospital from Mr. Moore and the name was changed to the Eleanor Moore County Hospital.
In 1925, a fire did some damage and some remodeling was required.
In 1940, a three-story addition was constructed.
In 1966, there was another new addition.
In 2000, some new construction resulted in enough space for the emergency and surgery areas, the specialty clinic, the birth center, special care unit and the main atrium.
In 2007/08, there was a major remodel of the west end of the structure.
Now, back to the present. This new update, which is underway, includes painting, new flooring and waiting room furniture in the Emergency Room (ER), Atrium and Same Day Surgery (SDS) waiting areas.
Also included is work in the following areas......ER waiting room and the hallway down to the Atrium, the Atrium, from the front door to the north window, the SDS waiting room, the Gifts Galore area, the Cafeteria eating area and the "Green mile" hall from the Atrium down to the Physical Therapy and Surgery clinic entrances.
Yes, some adjustments will be required. It can't be helped. There will be some familiar areas that will be closed off, periodically, during this time. That will require employees, patients and visitors to be rerouted which, of course, is not ideal but is necessary.
Along its historical path there have been numerous other changes, too many to mention, but including additions of new services and updates to the older areas.
One thing we're certain will not change during this period is the quality care provided. That will remain strong and will even improve via these important changes.
