BOONE/AREA CONNECTED DEATHS

     Mary Lou Davis Betz, 89, Boone. Formerly of Pleasant Hill. Born in South Dakota. Canton HS-54. Worked in Des Moines for Massey Ferguson and then in a doctor's office. Married William Betz in Des Moines in 1963. She enjoyed sewing and cross stitch. Survivors include a niece, Marlys "Oakie" Peter of Boone. Services at a later date.     

     Mary Louise Lyons Bartine, 89, Saint Anthony. Survivors include six daughters, including Sue (Steve) Gradoville, of Boone. Services in State Center.    

     Richard Harry Kruse, 81, Ankeny. Born in Ogden. OHS-61. Simpson College. Earned a Master of Science degree in Teaching from the University of Montana in 1971. He had received a football scholarship to Simpson and an academic scholarship to Montana. Married Lana Southern in 1964. Richard taught in Dallas Center, New Hampton and Ankeny for a total of 36 years before retirement in 2001. In 1993, he was named the Iowa Biology Teacher of the Year. A statistician for the Ankeny football program, he was given an award by the Iowa Athletic Director's Association for 42 years of dedicated service. Survivors include his wife, Lana, of 60 years and a son, Kevin (Sara). Services in Ankeny.

     Clifford Dean Summers, 89, Stratford/Bethany Life Story City. Married Nellie Jackson and then Doris Georgie Runge. After retirement Clifford and Doris became full time campers, living at Sandy's acreage in Stratford during the summer and in Texas for 30 years in wintertime. Survivors include several area children/grandchildren, Debbi Wirtz, Sandra Sloan and Daniel Runge all of Stratford and Michael (Debbie) Runge of Boone. A COL in Story City.

BOONE/AREA CONNECTED DEATHS

      Dennis Kester, 70, Boone. Born in Boone. Attended ISU before moving to Texas. In Houston, was a Senior Design Consultant for a kitchen and bath accessories company. Back in Boone he managed Tony's Bar and worked in retail at Von Maur. He also enjoyed work at the Rose Center where he would help with decorations, dinners and transportation for individuals. Dennis had a big heart for animals. Survivors include his life companion, Louie Valenciano, who he met in Texas before moving back to Iowa. Boone survivors include his sibling, Randy Kester, and a sister-in-law, Penny Kester. A COL will take place at a later date.

      Ronnie Miller, 73, Boone. Born in Des Moines. BHS. Worked in highline construction. Survivors include two brothers, Orvale (Nancy) Miller and Bob Martin and a sister, Mary Jo Brown. COL at a later date.  

      Sidney Durham, 89, Boone. Born in Cushing, IA. After serving the military in the Korean War, Sid moved to Boone where he worked as a mechanic for Vogler-Nieman and Pat Clemons. He married, Carolyn Kay Ades, BHS-58, in 1976. In 1980, the couple moved to Winnett, Montana to manage Dobson Ranch for three years. After moving to town, Sid was a Deputy Sheriff and the head of city maintenance. In 1985, the Durhams moved back to Boone and Sid worked for Randy's meats and helped build the Laser Car Wash. He loved horses, golfing, fishing, woodworking and gardening. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn, and son Dallas (Christine) Durham both of Boone and a daughter, Kim (Dan). A COL will be held in Boone.

     Phyliss Watson, 93, Boone/Eastern Star. Born in Ira, IA. Milford HS. Married Kenneth E. Watson in Dawson in 1952. She spent a lifetime as a country girl. Loved quilting and sewing and a clean, orderly house. Reading was also important. Four children survive, including Stacy (Julie) Watson of Boone. Grandchilden and great grandchildren, including Boone residents also survive. Services in Boone.

     Marjorie Green, 91, Ames. Survivors include a son and five grandchildren, including Tracy (Eric Peters) of Boone. Services in Jefferson.

     I, the Kornerman, is just curious. I spend lots of time seeking death information, especially for Ogden and Madrid, but even for other central Iowa sites as well.

     However, I've never had any response from Ogden or Madrid viewers.

BOONE/AREA CONNECTED DEATHS

       Mary Jo Wickman, 67, Boone. Born in Boone. BHS-76. Briar Cliff, where she received a degree in elementary education as well as playing softball. Taught school in Templeton but then turned to missionary work in Africa and India. Back in Iowa, she earned an RN from Mercy and worked in Kansas City. Mary Jo came home to Boone to care for her dad and then worked at Mary Greeley and the Boone County Hospital. She also served the Israel Family Hospice House and Northwest Community in Ames. After retiring from nursing, she taught P.E. and reading at Sacred Heart in Boone, as well as serving as school nurse. Mary Jo was a wonderful singer and enjoyed spreading that talent. She loved the Cubs,  Hawkeyes and ISU, Seinfeld and the old black and white TV shows. Survivors include her sister, Monica (Kevin) Pearson, and brothers, Mike (Dian) and Max (Carla) all of Boone and brother Marty (Vicki). Services in Boone.  

       Carol L. Johnson Austin, 81, Ames. Born in Boone. Ballard HS-61. Married Don Lowman in 1962. The couple lived in Iowa until 1980 when they moved to Oklahoma. Don passed in 1996. Married Charles (Chuck) Austin in 1996. Carol was very active in Vinita, OK. but when Chuck passed, she moved to Ames in 2021. Survivors include a son, daughter and two sisters. Service in Gilbert.  

       Barbra  (Barb) Ray,  56, Ogden. Born in Creston. East Union/Afton HS. An active athlete and musician in high school. Southwest Community College, Buena Vista and a culinary school. Became a chef and earned Masters Degrees in Education, Science and Psychology. Taught school and was a bakery manager at Trolli and HyVee. A woman of all trades, carpentry, plumbing and auto mechanics, she loved rock hunting and science. Fighting a terminal disease seldom slowed her down. Survivors include her husband, Mark Simpson, of Ogden, her parents, a son, three sisters and two sons-in-law, including Mark Simpson Jr. of Ogden. A private COL will be held later.

       Larry Wayne Sturtz, 80, LeGrand IA/ Premier Estates of Toledo. Born in Boone. BHS-62. Worked his lifetime as a repairman for Iowa Power/Alliant Energy until retirement. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing mushroom and wild asparagus hunting. A competitive card player, Larry was a member of Elks and Moose Lodge and the VFW. Four adult children, Wayne, Dawn, Warren and Julie, survive. Services in Marshalltown and Conrad.

     Barbara Diane Kingsbury, 70, Ames. Born in Ames. United Community HS-72. A free spirit, after high school, she lived a communal lifestyle with friends in the Cedar Rapids area and spent time hitch hiking back and forth across the country without informing family as to her whereabouts. Finally, in Lakewood, CO. she lived for 25 years with a friend, David Jordan. She worked as a waitress and enjoyed crafting, gardening and flea marketing. In 2012, Barb moved to Everett, WA, bought a camper and loved camping in the mountains and the beach area. She also found the "love of her life,:" a four-wheeled Harley Motorcycle and she had a great time taking trips and group activities with her motorcycle group. She also found time to visit a friend in Australia. Survivors include a sister, Rosalie Rysavy and two aunts, Sharon Sharp and Charlene Brice, all of Boone. A brother, Ron,  also survives. Services at a later date.

     Delores (Dee) Peterson Williams, 81, Boone. Born in Boone. Interstate 35HS-61. Married Boyce Williams Jr. in 1965 and the couple made their home in Boone. Worked at Bourns from the time she graduated from high school until it closed. She then delivered Meals on Wheels in Boone for many years. Dee was a member of the Boone and Scenic Valley and the Red Hats Society. Took continuing education from DMACC and ISU and loved to travel. Her husband and two sons preceded her in death. Survivors include a brother. Services later.

      Fern L. Abramson Broome, 85, Boone/Eastern Star. Born in Boone. BHS-57. She was an in-home health care assistant and worked for Lutheran Social Services and Kelly Assisted Living. Survivors include her daughter, Michelle Broome. Service in Linwood Park Cemetery.     

       Diana Rae Devries Campbell, 78, Madrid. Born in South Dakota. Grew up in Rapid City. RCHS. Married Eldon Campbell in 1965 in Rapid City. In 2002, the couple moved to Madrid. She loved making quilts and the couple especially enjoyed making quilts for veterans. Diana loved watching the sunrise and sunset. Survivors include her husband, Eldon, and two sisters. Services in Boone and Madrid.     

       Karen Jean Quist Anderson, 83, Dayton/Grandview. Three children survive, including Daniel (Traci) Nelson of Boone. Four step-children also survive. Private local graveside service.       

       Lovey Mae Budd Mondt, 97, Boone. BHS-45. Married Norman (Gene)  Mondt in Boone in 1947. History degree from ISU. Worked for the Iowa Department of Social Services, Boone Count DHS for 10 years and the Woodward Resource Center until retirement in 1990. She loved horseback riding, camping, fishing, dancing, playing cards, gardening, taking bus tours and Amtraking. Longtime member of her church, was a Pinochle Club member, a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and also had membership in Maji Chapter #139, Beta Sigma Phi, Phi Theta Kappa and the Kappa 20th Chapter. Survivors include a daughter, Karen (Randy) Johnson of Ogden. Services in Boone.

      Cathleen Cay Casteel, 58. Survivors include Boone resident Mason (Libby Kloewer) McNeill, a nephew. Private services.  

      Dennis Ray DeVoogd, 65, Boone. Born in Boone. BHS-77. Army vet. Married Cindy Fisher in Boone in 2010. Had a passion for basketball, especially March Madness. Also loved rebuilding computers, cooking and cheering the Hawkeyes and Mets. Also enjoyed bowling, pool, foosball, cribbage and skiing in Minnesota. Survivors include his wife, Cindy, step-son Kacey Miller of Boone and step-daughter, Jessica (Moorman) Meeks of Pilot Mound and four sisters, including Debra Krauth, Diana Wulf and Danette Honkomp of Boone. Services in Boone.

     Dorothy Jewett Neal, 94, Panora/Lake Panorama. Born in Boone. Formerly of Grand Junction.  

     Frances Schierholz Smith, 80, Des Moines. Born in Boone. Married William F. Hook Sr. and James L. Smith Sr. Survivors include her 10 children and two siblings. A COL is planned.    

     Gary Wiebers, 70, Boone. Born in Ida Grove. Sac City HS. Married Terri Lynch. Had a passion for hot rod car restorations. Married Ginger Cherveny and built a family business. He enjoyed riding the custom 1980 Harley Shovelhead that he and his son hat restored together. He loved music but was best known for his meticulous attention to detail when restoring classic cars, particularly his 1966 Chevelle. Four children survive, including Amanda (Mike) Gross and Rylee Wiebers, both of Boone. A brother also survives. Services in Boone.

BOONE/AREA CONNECTED DEATHS

       Paula D. Shaw Myers, 79, Clovis, NM. Born in Boone. Married Edward L. Myers in 1960. He passed away in 2005. The family resided in Boone until 1979 when to moved to Albuquerque, NM, Farmington, NM in 1981 and Clovis, NM in 1984. All the moves were in support of her husband's professional advancement. Paula earned a cosmetology license in the late 1980's. For 10 years, she specialized in acrylic nails. She retired in the late 90's. Paula was passionate about Christmas and enjoyed storytelling, crossword puzzles, cooking, sewing, gardening, reading and was a lifelong learner. Three adult children survive. A memorial service will be held in Iowa.  

      Jo Ann Morris Martin, 90, Boone. Born in Boone. BHS-53, where she was a standout basketball player. Earned a teaching certificate from Boone Junior College. Taught in Mapleton and Boone. Married Reverend Eugene R. Martin, who passed in 2015, after the couple had celebrated 56 years together. The couple served churches and camps in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania until retirement in 2000. Survivors include two brothers, Paul and Gale Morris, a sister, Helen, and four children, including Lauri A. Bouk of Boone. Services in Boone.     

      Glen Douglas Forster, 82, Boone. Born in Boone. BHS-60. Iowa National Guard vet. Married Carol Ann Zanker in 1963. Worked many years at John Deere Ankeny Works until retirement in 1998. Glen loved shooting pool, shuffleboard, hunting, golf and home repair. He loved singing/entertaining, going to car shows and backing the Packers and Hawkeyes. He was proud of his defeat of alcoholism, faced it head-on and shared his positive testimony. Survivors include his wife, Carol, sons Jeff and Mike and sister Carol all of Boone, as well as a daughter, Brenda. Private service.  

       Michelle Marie Miller, 55, Woodbury, MN. Formerly of Boone. Born in Fort Dodge. Lived in central Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota in support of her husband's work. A nurse and an avid animal lover. Survivors include her husband, Mike, a son, Travis, three siblings, Eric Klein, Wendy Koch and Kenny Rossing, and her step-mother, Sue Rossing. Services in Boone. 

      Michael Alan Day, 59, Boone. Born in Ames. Boone schools. Married Kim Anderson in Woolstock in 1998. Worked for Van Diest and then for Tom Walters Sanitation for over 10 years. He loved buying scratch tickets at L and M. Survivors include his mother, Linda Smith, his father, William Day, and a brother, Rick Day, all of Boone. A son, Nickolai Day and three half brothers, Matt, James and William Day, all of Boone, also survive. Ex-wife, Kim Day, of Boone and a daughter also survive.. A COL will be held in Boone.

      Duane Obed Johnson, 89, Polk City. Survivors include his wife, a sister, Bev Kalsem, of Boone, a daughter and brother. Services in Polk City and Cambridge.

       JoAnn Morris Martin, 90, Boone. BHS-53. 

       Leroy Arthur Hamilton, 90, Boone. Born in Boone. BHS-52. Married Joan Logsdon, BHS-52 in Boone in 1965. LeRoy worked different positions for the DOT for 44 years. He enjoying hunting, fishing, golfing, ISU football and the couple traveled extensively. LeRoy started a family tradition of attending the Yankee Doodle Pops Concert in Des Moines every July 4th. He was a devoted Elks Club member, belonged to the Boone Jaycees and the Boone County Historical Society. Joan passed in 2020. Survivors include a son, Scott, BHS-78, a daughter, Debra, BHS-75, and a sister. Services in Boone.

       Mary Beth Sayre Fox, 67, Woodward. Born in Texas. Lived in El Paso, TX. and Las Cruses, NM until the family moved to Boone. Sacred Heart Elementary and then United Community HS-75. Married Richard A. Fox. Worked at Woodward Resource Center caring for individuals with disabilities. Then, spent time caring for family members. An avid pet lover. Survivors include her husband, Richard, two step-sons, Brock and Gavin (Stephanie) Fox, five brothers, John (Patrice), Bob, Dick, Paul and Jerry (Stephanie) and seven sisters Kitty Sayre, Toni (Gene) Ridgway, Sandy (Joe) Osborn, Peggy (Lee) Johnson, Jan (Steve) Barrett, Jo (Gary) Johnson and Anna (Shelly) Sayre. Services at a later date.

       Richard Stephen Mead, 81, Ogden. Born in Mitchellville. Knoxville HS-61. University of Iowa. Army vet. Worked for a bank in Des Moines and then at Firestone for many years until retirement. He loved history, puzzles and games. Survivors include a sister, Marilyn Heater, and a brother, Harold Mead, both of Ogden. A second brother also survives. Services in Ogden.    

      Eleanor Joyce Rubenking, 86, Ogden/Westhaven. Born in Malvern. MHS. Married Thomas August Rubenking in 1956. She was a longtime bus driver and a beautiful seamstress. There are five children in the family, including Aaron Jay (Pam) Rubenking of Boone. Two sisters also survive. Services in Ogden and Randolph.     

      Roberta Lynn Stephenson-Johnson, 72, Marion. Born in Monticello. MHS-70. Northern Iowa-74. Taught at NESCO/Zearing for two years starting in '74. Then, she taught at United Community where she met Daniel Johnson of rural Boone. The couple married in Monticello in 1978. They farmed in their early married life but left that in 1985 and moved to Mount Vernon where both began postal careers in Cedar Rapids and Marion. Roberta worked as a clerk and later, as a training technician in the Cedar Rapids main office until retirement in 2014. In 2007, the couple had moved to Marion. Dan retired in 2017. Roberta loved growing flowers, was a talented artist and loved traveling. Survivors include her husband, Daniel, and son, Bryan (Erica) Johnson of Portland, Oregon. Roberta and Daniel bought a condo in Portland and divided time between Portland and Marion from 2017 until her passing. Services in Cedar Rapids and Monticello.
