MY BUDDY, GARY IRVINE

Seventy five years. Can it really be?

It was the late 1950's and two young lads were returning home after serving our country, Gary Irvine in the U.S. Navy and me, the Kornerman, in the U.S. Army.

Just like numerous others, feeling our way into real manhood, and wondering what the future had in store.

I'm absolutely sure, in our cases, part of that question was quickly answered. We were Iowa born and Boone raised and, despite the fact we had seen our services world, Gary in the U.S. and on ships overseas, and me from sandy Arkansas to sunny California, we had determined early on there was no place like home and that was in this small Central Iowa community named after Nathan Boone.

We both loved and looked forward to "coming home."

That decision was important and the lifetimes spent here proved to be "right on."

Youthful free wheeling lifestyles did require some income. So, while I returned to a lifetime of media work, Gary followed his dad at Boone's Culligan franchise before taking charge himself. Car salesmanship followed for a time and work at Arnold Motor Supply completed his work days.

Gary Lee Irvine, a good friend to many and a 1955 graduate of Boone High School, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 88 years of age, after way too many years of struggle with various health issues.

Meantime, I'm still here at 90 plus, a 1953 BHS grad who doesn't know why my name has yet to be called.

Memories of our friendship? Oh, my.......yes, they could fill a book.......whether truthful or not.

As much as he loved athletics, that wasn't Gary's strongest point. He was a pretty good Toreador swimmer and was a football team participant......mostly in practice. I'll never forget his appearance in a Des Moines Register photo of a successful Toreador football team that had just upset a Newton squad that had been acclaimed number one in Iowa.

Let's see, who's that very joyful lad standing out in the front row, fist raised in victory for all of Iowa to see? It had to be the winner of the Outstanding Player of the Game honor. Nope. It was our Irv, who thoroughly expressed the excitement of the victory, but minus any real playing time in it.

Hey, remember, at the start of our long friendship, we were young kids with IMPORTANT things on our mind like cars and sports, Gary's boat at the Great Lakes and those newly hired young teachers that were sure to gain some notice.

Speaking of that boat, Gary, without shame, always conceded that he was a spoiled kid. His dad, a very successful business man, surely provided that fancy boat AND Gary always seemed to have a new car on an almost yearly basis, oftentimes shiny Corvette's.

Irv and I loved our teams, from the Toreadors on up and all Iowa based.

One of our dreams was to visit every single Big 10 Conference football stadium and we did catch quite a few......Ohio State, Northwestern, Purdue and Michigan State. In fact, those last two provide a pair of special memories we've shared numerous times through the years.

At Purdue, we failed to recognize the time difference and didn't reach the stadium until  play was well underway. Then, Michigan State.....that was also unforgetable.

The Spartans were a talent laden team led by All American running back Clint Jones. They were rated number one in the nation and an overwhelming favorite over our Hawkeyes.

Early in the game, Eddie Podolak got loose for a long touchdown run and a 7-0 Hawkeye lead. But, this game was wayyyy too long. The final score was Michigan State 50 something and Iowa 7. But that was only half the memory.

Being the Sports Editor at the Boone News Republican at the time, I had sent for and received press box tickets for that game. Long time press box rules tell all inhabitants that "this box" is a neutral area and any type of disruptive behavior will simply not be tolerated.

Unfortunately, that early Hawkeye touchdown and lead was way too much for good ole' Irv to handle. The first thing I knew, he was jumping up and down, shouting, pounding me on the head and simply being obnoxious to all those around in the 100 yard long media box, which, of course, was filled to capacity.

I tried to escape but was in the middle of a storm that drew uncomplimentary comments from a cadre of national news people. Even our Iowa news friends were upset with us.

Eventually, those wounds were salved and somehow, on a cold wintry night, we found ourselves on the Hawkeye team bus heading for the motel after the game. Never bashful, Irv had talked the right person into sharing the ride. Gary thought that experience was cooler than cool.

I admit it. I perhaps expected or at least wanted Gary to name me his best friend ever. One problem. Everyone he ever talked too or had a moment with was his REAL best friend and there were tons of them, from community elite to those in the grime of the Boone Speedway pits and everyone in between. If he didn't know them NOW, he was researching to find out who they were.

In the last couple weeks, we had a few final moments together. Gary did do some limited texting but was not very privy to other communication outlets. One last text message from him reached the Kelley home at about 9 p.m. Friday night, just a few hours before his passing.

A time before that, he had called, very upset and wondering if it was true that one of those Best Friends had passed away. It was true but the death had occurred a full couple weeks earlier.

So, to keep him up-to-date, I started mailing the Korner to him periodically.  My final dispatch was simply a list of 15 or so of the latest deaths, as listed in the Korner. He called and was so thankful for that information.

A few days before his death, Gary called with what seemed like a "goodbye" message. He said he knew his time was limited and asked if I would tell readers in the Korner how much he loved Boone and everyone here he had come in contact with.

Obviously, the man loved all of life and set few limits for his display of exuberance for all of its pathways. Yet, family, that was the gold standard. Wife Rosie was met and convinced at the right time and was just what Gary needed. The exceptional trauma she's faced for many months was not desired but is finally conquered and admiration for her support is endless. And grandkids? Stories abound about his devotion to them.

In conclusion, I won't bore with the too often used greatness cliches. Instead, how about repeating what my good friend Shakespeare once said, "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women in it, merely players. They have their entrances and exits, and each one, in their time, play many parts."

Sounds like my ole' buddy, Gary Irvine.

BOB E. PERSON

Boone resident E. Bob Person died September 24, 2025. He was 85.

     What a guy!!!!!

It took some time, but October 7, 2025, a lengthy, very thorough and well written obituary made its appearance.

Maybe you've experienced this same feeling. Even then, reading it, I felt like the obituary wasn't nearly enough. It didn't tell a complete story of the Bob Person I knew and worked with.

Bob came to Boone after securing a double major from his revered State University of Iowa. It was this communities gain when he immediately settled and established a family here, giving no indication in the next 60 years plus, that there were any lights brighter than what he could contribute to this community.

Bob and I worked closely together as we were accepted as employees by the Boone News Republican at about the same time, he, as a photographer and I, as Sports Editor. Then, in 1970, I joined the Iowa High School Athletic Association staff and part of my new duties was to guide an expansive photo program.

At all IHSAA championship events, pictures of team and individual participants were required. I had never been a photographer but, after some special training from Bob and another former BNR employee, Rollie Peterson, I, somehow, but nervously, learned to accept this role. Some special "outside" training was also provided, as I was taught how to properly "line up" large groups, shoulder to shoulder with no gaps, no blinking etc. etc.

Eventually, it was decided that the IHSAA should give the excited athletes, parents and fans an opportunity to purchase copies of those favored pictures. I hired former co-worker Bob Person to do most of the photography, while I assisted by scheduling and putting the pieces in place. My wife Jo took the picture orders. That team worked together for several years and its a certainty that, after all these years, many schools in Iowa are still showing our copies of their successful state championship teams and individuals in their trophy cases.

Much of the material that was covered in Bob's obituary was well known locally and will be repeated in this Korner. A repeat is necessary because I think of the multitudes of Bob's friends, acquaintances and former students, many who have since settled many miles from Boone, and were not fully aware of his complete and very interesting biography.

To Bob, it was all family and photography. To pay for his first camera, Bob, "an Army kid," made a deal to shine his dad's military boots for a year. Soon after, he was taking pictures of all kinds of events at his high school in Virginia, enough that he was honored with a Kodiak Award in his senior year.

Many years later, at Boone Campus, Des Moines Area Community College, Bob founded the photography program and journalism classes, as well as serving as faculty advisor for the campus newspaper. For 30 years, he inspired students to explore their creativity, mentoring many who went on to successful careers in professional photography and photojournalism.

For 40 years, Bob owned and operated Person Studio, winning numerous awards and honors from the Professional Photographers of Iowa and of America and the Professional Photographers guild.

His work ranged from covering Hawkeye and Iowa State Cyclone sporting events and the usual wedding and graduation photos, to special portraits of children that brought warmth to Iowa families and trips to Disneyland through McKenna Color Lab's competition.

But there was more,  much more to Bob Person than excellent photography skills. A man of deep faith, Bob was always ready to lend a hand to help those in need with compassion and humility. DMACC students remember the humor, patience and joy he brought to the classroom. The Iowa National Guard recognized him for his public relations work as well as his photograpy. An interview with Mohammad Ali and riding the rails at the inaugural Boone and Scenic Valley event provided photo highlight remembrances.

In closing, a word by word repeat of a paragraph from his obituary perfectly capture his story. "A teacher, mentor and storyteller, Bob will be remembered for his faith, passion, laughter and generosity of spirit. His photographs captured not just the moments, but the heart and humanity of those he loved and served. His legacy will continue to live on through his family, his students, and the countless images he captured over a lifetime behind the lens."

Bob is survived by his wife, Lisa, and daughters, Nicole and Brooke.

AT RANDOM

I, the Kornerman, had a wonderful opportunity to see, visit and talk with/to members of the Boone High School class of 1961 Saturday. It was great, as always, to see familiar faces, many I hadn't seen for some time.

Prior to that, a few weeks back, I had the same opportunity to meet  with members of the class of 1959. Seems like kind of a pattern developing there and it got me to thinking, WHY? Suddenly, it dawned on me. It has to be......I'm willing and CHEAP. Oh well, at 90, they can't expect too much from an old guy.

Verne Lyon  had invited me to speak to the '61 event and had things well organized. He said I would speak at 1 p.m. for 20-25 minutes. I was thinking....."at my age, it sometimes takes that long to "catch my breath."

After speaking for a time, I asked Verne how much time I had remaining and he said, "four minutes." That gave me time for one additional story.

Late word has it that everything is about set on two awaited community projects. With the city O.K. near finalization, that Boone Arch and the extension of Hancock Drive will soon be the scenes of some actual action.

By the way, you, perhaps, have noticed the huge clock at Eighth and Story hasn't budged for some time. Its been solidly set at 12 noon. I'm worried. That's been a defining part of our downtown area for many years and I would hate to think of its demise, while understanding that, perhaps, needed parts, after all these years, have become obsolete or other reasons have added to an unsolveable answer. Personally, I just like to see it there, as it has for ?? years.......whether it tells the time or not.

K------K

Words of inspiration or advice are a dime a dozen on the internet and I came across this one recently that I thought was worth repeating.

A guy had lunch with old friends and an 85-year old came along also. When the menu's arrived, my friends and I ordered salads, sandwiches and soups except for Jim, the 85-year old, who ordered a large piece of heated apple pie, along with two large scoops of ice cream.

My friends couldn't take their eyes off of Jim savoring each bite of his pie a-la-mode.

The next time we went out to eat, I lunched on a white meat tuna sandwich while Jim ordered a chocolate parfait.

Finally, I asked Jim, "how come you always order such rich desserts while I feel like I must be sensible in my food choices?"

His answer was, "I'm tasting all that is possible for me to taste. I try to eat the food I need and do the things I should in order to stay healthy, BUT life's too short and I hate missing out on something good. This year, I realized how old I was. I've never been this old before, so, while I'm still here, I've decided its time to try all those things that, for years, I've been ignoring. I haven't smelled all the flowers yet. There are too many trout streams I haven't fished. There's more fudge sundaes to wolf down and kites to be flown overhead. There are too many golf courses I haven't played and I haven't laughed at all the jokes. I've missed a lot of sporting events and potato chips and cokes. I want to wade again in water and feel ocean spray in my face. I want to sit in a country church once more and thank God for his grace. I want peanut butter every day spread on my morning toast. I want untimed long distance calls to the ones I love the most. I haven't cried at all the movies yet, or walked in the morning rain etc............" and that's just a sampling. There's a lot more goals he mentioned.

WE ARE WINNERS EVERY DAY

The wait is over. Winners of the $1 BILLION, 787 powerball drawing have been declared (but not announced....due to state rules of anonymity). Each of the two winners can choose between an annuity....893.5 MILLION, 30 payments over 29 years OR lump sum payments of 410.3 MILLION each before taxes.

I, the Kornerman, am reminded of "Magic Bank Account." The actual author is unknown but his/her words were found in the billfold of famous Alabama football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant after he died in 1982.

Here goes......Imagine that you won a prize in a contest that resulted in your receiving a bank account deposit of $86,400 EACH morning. HOWEVER, there are a set of rules to follow. (1) Everything you didn't spend each day could be taken away from you. (2) You cannot transfer money into another account. (3) You may only spend it. (4) Each morning, the bank deposits another $86,400 in your account. (5) The bank can end this game without warning at any time. It can close the account and you will not receive a new one.

What would you do? Probably, you would buy anything and everything you've wanted. Not only for yourself, but for all the people you love and care for. Even for people you don't know because you couldn't possibly spend it all on yourself, right? You would probably try to spend every penny and use it all each day because you knew it would be  replenished the next morning, right?

Actually, this game is real. Each of us is already a winner of this prize, we just don't seem to see it. Each morning we receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life. When we go to sleep, any remaining time is not credited to us. What we haven't used up this day is forever lost. Yesterday is forever gone. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time. So, what will you do with your 86,400 seconds?

Those seconds are worth so much more than the same amount in dollars. Think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life because time races by so much quicker than you think. (Editor's Note: Yes, ask me about that.) So, take care of yourself, be happy, love deeply and enjoy life.

Start "spending" and don't complain about growing old. Some people don't get the privilege.

John Kueck, BHS-61, has told Korner viewers about the FIVE Boone natives who find themselves together as residents, these many years later, of Friendship Village in Bloomington, MN.

One of them is Stephen Jon Hamilton, BHS-66. His dad was the owner-operator and charter member of the Boone Tru Value hardware store on Story Street and also owned the Ames, Ogden and Madrid stores.

Here we go again. Nothing busts my buttons than having an opportunity to tell and yes, brag about Boone natives who have brought buckets of pride and distinction to our community.

Stephen Hamilton has received raves of adoration throughout this nation and abroad due to his prominence on the American organ scene for over 40 years. Throughout his career, consistent critical review has earned him acclaim as a thoroughly engaging and popular personality and has firmly established his reputation as a leading and much sought-after virtuoso.

His lengthy and extremely impressive biography is much too thorough to include in its entirety in the Korner. But its replete with mentions of his work in not only revered and well known American venues, but some of the world's greatest locations as well. An avid educator, as well as his personal performances, he is a well known faculty member of several colleges and always in demand as a clinician.

Hamilton is Minister of Music Emeritus at the historic church of the Holy Trinity (Episcopal) in New York City and in 2023, he was named Director of Music and Organist at Olivet Congregational Church in Saint Paul, MN.

Steven began his private studies in the fourth grade at Drake University, earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Southern Illinois University and secured the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Manhattan School of Music.

His next concert at Olivet Congregational Church in St. Paul is Sunday, November 30, 2025 at 3 p.m. and he has issued a special invitation to his Boone friends and neighbors, Steve and Susan Kueck.

CATCHING UP

Boone's Arnie Braland passed away the other day and news of his death, as well as the nightly sound of roaring engines, pretty much coincided with the start of the Boone Super National championships here this week.

Thanks to the late Vern Carman and some others, Boone has hosted a Speedway track since 1967. And, then beyond, in 1988, the Super Nationals found their home here. For close to 40 years now, that event has made thousands of race fans, from all over this country, aware of Boone, Iowa.

Arnie, of course, was not THE only great driver that participated in the races. Through the years, I covered many others.......Arlo Dorenbush, Freddie Van Cannon, George Barton and Greg Davis come to mind and I know I've missed some others who provided local race fans with lots of excitement on hot summer nights.

        Peace Arnie.....and thanks.

 K-----K

Interesting memories from Jerry Manriquez, BSH-57, regarding his history with Redeker Furniture. He provides lots of names and places but for some of them, I'm having a problem solving the timeline. From what I've been able to piece together, there have been four Redeker's locations. The original store was on Story Street between seventh and eighth streets. Then, a move was made to a Keeler street location followed by the old South Story store and in most recent years, the newest store east and south of Boone.

Some of the names Jerry mentions, all former Redeker employees, are Ron Hopkins, BSH-59; Jerry Gilliam, BHS-48, Jim Bridges, BHS-46; Ben Pollard, BHS-59 and Glen Forster, BHS-60. Then, of course, there were the upper echelon, original owner/operator Fred Redeker; Stan Redeker, BHS-44; Stan's wife, Maxine Erickson Redeker, BHS-46; and Bill Currell, BHS-47.

On the Story Street location there were three floors plus a basement and freight elevator. Jerry recalls that living room furniture was placed on the first floor; bedroom furniture on the second floor with kitchen furniture and hope chests on the third floor. A warehouse was part of the third floor and the freight elevator was operated by pulling a cable and to make a stop, you simply held the cable so it couldn't move. There, apparently, was luck involved if  the elevator floor became level with the store floor.

Jerry laughed that "carpet, linoleum and used furniture occupied the basement and at Christmas time, Stan would invite postal employees to play cards there and he furnished the refreshments."

In 1960, Jerry had returned home from naval service and worked at Redeker's while attending Boone Junior College. He had worked there earlier during his junior year at Boone Sacred Heart school.

Former Des Moines Area Boone Campus baseball coach John Smith was very proud of his recruitment of Corey Koskie, who spent two years on his Bears team. Koskie went on to have an excellent major league career until some injuries sidelined him.

Earlier this season, Koskie was inducted into the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame which I'm sure provided a smile for John who passed away earlier this year.

K-----K

Ann Onymous is at it again. He/She wrote, "why is Majorie Michelson still on your obit listing after about five years?

Easy answer.......its because it has never been deleted just like all the others since we began this journey on March in 2010. I admit I've never really checked it out but I assume ALL the obits from that date on are still being listed.
