GREAT BOONE BASEBALL/SOFTBALL CONTINUES
I, the Kornerman, am always sorry to see the Boone baseball/softball season move toward completion. However, when its been a great season, the blow is softened somewhat.
The Toreador boys, against a competitive schedule, finished up at 23-10 AND made their first State tourney appearance in some time. A loss to the number one rated team in the state in their class, Dubuque, Wahlert, 3-1, ended their season in first round state play. But the team, guided by Coach Charley Eastlund, provided local fans with lots of excitement all season.
The BHS girls showed great improvement during the long season. North Polk defeated them, 10-0, in a game early in the season. Then, one game away from a state tourney berth, number one rated North Polk, 33-5, had a very stiff challenge from the Boone team, winning, 6-5, in a come from behind effort. Boone's season finished at 21-14.
The Boone Slammers, a 14 U team, coached by Tony Eckard, Kurt Hilsabeck, Jon Strabley and Nathan Ross, became a State Tournament champion with six straight wins. Congratulations to them.

QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS
Here, all at once, my desk has been overrun with numerous questions that viewers have posed.
But before that.....I noticed in a recent obituary an item or two that have caused me, the Kornerman, to ask a question.
During his career, Dr. John Paul Kluge, 88, of Ames, an ISU grad, worked as a veterinarian for the National Disease Lab and ISU.
From his obit, I learned that Dr. Kluge was active in the Moingona Hunt Board of Directors and served as the College of Vet Medicine Coordinator for the Iowa Games Equestrian Venue and Moingona Hunter Pace.
In my 75 plus years in Boone, I have never heard of these Moingona references????

My longtime good friend, Ann Onymous, wrote, "what was the name of that lunch counter on Ninth Street between Story and Allen streets. and the one where Dutch Oven Bakery is now located? I've taught many a burger joint and truck stop diner how to make a garbage man open-faced sandwich and since, they've added it to their menus."
K-----K
Mike Loehrer, BHS-64, wrote, "I was relating a story to one of my grandchildren about how my great grandfather's greenhouse was destroyed in the tornado of May 21, 1918. I've been told he was going to have his grand opening on the 22nd. But he had no insurance and left town to move out west. I recently found some photos taken in Boone at a place called Nic-o-let Park which appears to be an amusement park with a number of rides. I've never heard of this."

John Hinz, BHS-64, wrote, "Great reading about the Coney Island. When we were allowed to leave the BHS campus for lunch, a group of us went there often for lunch. I believe I'm correct that we could get 3 coneys for $1 plus extra for a drink. I think the group varied but usually included Dick Musser, Tom Inman, Mike Nyman and Jude Rolfes. It was gourmet dining compared to the BHS cafeteria. Linda and I still enjoy coneys and when we return to Iowa, George, the Chili King, is a very passable substitute."
K-----K
Leon "Andy" Anderson, BHS-62, and I are back and forth with emails quite often and in answer to a question I posed, here was his reply,"Both of us, brother Laverne, BHS-54, and I, flew helicopters and Laverne flew the 119 fixed wing also, in the National Guard. I got my commercial fixed wing after the Guard. Yeah, that was me that was Captain Andy on WHO in Des Moines and then Captain Jack came on board after my third year." P.S. Who remembered that Leon was the leading hitter in the Boone Babe Ruth Baseball league one year?

A long time friend and one time co-worker at KWBG, Bernie Lewiston, grew up south of Ogden and graduated from Perry High School. An ISU grad, he started work in radio at KASI in Ames and KWBG. Eventually, he went back to the farm but said he never lost the radio "bug."
Bernie just had another birthday and since 1957, he's been a ham radio operator. The Ogden Reporter had a nice story about that and Bernie sent me a copy of it. It was very interesting and it reminded me of many years ago when my family were neighbors with the Harold Gustafson family up near 17th and Crawford.
The Gustafsons had two sons, Don and Dean, who I spent time with. I remember how enthralled I was watching their dad as he talked to the "world" via his ham radio outfit. In the Ogden newspaper story, they asked, "what has kept you (Bernie) interested in ham radio?" His reply, "its still a kid's fascination that I can key my transmitter and immediately get a response from a ham in Eastern Europe or someplace else in the world."

A GOOD TRY.....BUT NO LUCK SO FAR
As of this writing, 7/6/2025, it appears I've "struck out" with the Des Moines Register.........AGAIN.
A week or so ago, there was a story in the Register about all the various swimming offers (pools etc.) available to Central Iowa area citizens. No Boone mention of our wonderful city pool.
But even more disturbing is the fact that there has been no mention I've found of our annual Boone Municipal Band Festival, which has thrived for the past 32 years.
Despite my unsuccessful past history with the Register, I was riled enough that I contacted, by email, a young lady listed as a Register Trending Reporter.
I submitted to her some history of the Boone Municipal Band, highlighting the upcoming 33rd edition of the Iowa Municipal Band Festival which will be held all day Saturday, July 12. The Register reporter did reply but with little encouragement.
I mean, c'mon, this Festival has an impressive history. I don't know of other such Festivals in Iowa, it has certainly survived the test of time and it brings band players and fans from all over the state to provide them a great period of music enjoyment.
Starting at 10 a.m., the nine full bands involved perform for an hour each and two smaller groups fill in with offerings while the "change of bands" is occurring. Those breaks are also a good time for a snack from the food court.
To further state my case for what should be a piece of very interesting and informative statewide news, I submitted the 2025 Festival schedule.
10 a.m. Ames Municipal Band (32nd appearance); 11 a.m. Collins Concert Band of Cedar Rapids (4th appearance); noon: Iowa Military Veterans Band (6th); 1 p.m. Glenwood Community Band (1st); 2 p.m: Zumbrota Minnesota Community Band, (4th); 3 p.m: Greater Waverly Municipal Band, (2nd): 4 p.m: New Jolly Germans Band of Des Moines, (2nd); 5 p.m: Ballard Community Band of Huxley (16th) and at 6 p.m., the Boone Municipal Band (33rd).
Betrunken Messing of Des Moines will provide the break time music at 10:45 and 11:45 a.m. while the Boone Jazz Trio will play at 12:45; 1:45; 2:45 and 3:45 p.m..
Normally, at this time of year, I have faithfully contacted the Register annually, with zero success, for some coverage of another historical event coming to our community.
For the 37th consecutive year, the Boone Speedway will host the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) Super Nationals from Labor Day, Monday, September 1st to Saturday, September 6. National Championship Races right here in the heart of Central Iowa.
As usual, thousands of race fans from all over our great U.S.A. and Canada will spend the entire week, or a portion thereof, right here in support of an estimated 800 or more entrants, drivers, friends and family members.
BUT, for the first time in the past several years, the Register will not receive any advance word from me about this terrific Iowa racing event. I have finally yielded. My previous annual attempts have always been ignored Maybe somebody else will have better luck than me in securing ANY KIND of coverage from the Register about the Super Nationals, who always provide extensive material about the Knoxville Raceway.
The two, the Boone Speedway and the Knoxville event, are not real competitors. Their formats and dates are different, their events are different and, mostly, their clientele are completely different BUT, these two great Iowa racing events are treated completely different by the Register and I've never understood why the Super Nationals don't deserve at least SOME coverage.
With a week to go before the Band Festival, I still have hope the Register will, somehow, acknowledge it and if so, I would certainly thank them and apologize for my skepticism.
End of story.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
THE GOOD.......
Jo and I were so excited to learn that Heidi Hicks, a Boone High School family and consumer science teacher, has received a statewide honor.
She's our neighbor......just a couple doors down.
Heidi has been named the 2025 Iowa ACTE Teacher of the Year.
This award is presented annually by the Iowa Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE). It recognizes outstanding CTE educators who demonstrate innovation in the classroom, commitment to their students, and leadership in advancing career and technical education across their communities.
Heidi has led the BHS program since 2022 and recently was honored with the reward at the ACTE Conference. The program prepares students for careers and success in areas such as culinary arts, child development, hospitality, human services and interior design.
Great job Heidi.
THE BAD........
Occasionally, I, the Kornerman, scan the Boone Police report and, unfortunately, I did that recently. My coverage was from May 22 to June 22. Never really intended it that way but that's a month's worth.
There's some bad reading there but some that surprised me is worse than bad.
THE UGLY......
Here goes......

5/30 Juvenile male, Boone, harassment. Age 11.

In the mail, Ron Hopkins, BSH-59, wrote, "just catching up on some recent Korner blogs. Amazing how often the Coney Island at 8th and Keeler is mentioned. I probably only had lunch there a half a dozen times, 60 years ago, but I can still remember the taste and the experience -WOW! I worked part time at Redeker's in its original location around the corner and down the block on Keeler and ate lunch at the Coney Island when I could. It's great that you continue the Korner. I hope to visit Boone in early September."

KORNER NEWS CATCHUP DAY
I guess when I hit my 90th, I took a break, started to let things slide or, perhaps, I simply hit a "what the heck" lazy streak. Anyway, its been some time since I burdened Korner viewers with anything other than death notices.......until today.
The result is......I have some "makeup" material to disperse......like a buffet....some good, some bad...... but things that have hit my desk and deserve responses in no particular order.
I don't know what it is about this 90 that makes "things" so "different." Just another year they say but it seems more......something?
Anyway, here goes with "catchup" news that I wish to deliver.
Jeff Gard's death hit especially hard because the veteran of 32 years of elementary teaching in Boone spent that time living right next door to my parents in one of their apartments. They were his lucky landlords. Hundreds, if not thousands of Boone parents and former students are thinking of and grieving his passing and the enormous positive impact he had on their lives. An outstanding individual and educator, he leaves us with many memories that will never be outdated.
I don't know the author of this entry but it said, "in the late 70's, I had what I was told was the handwritten "family" coney island recipe. But, like most of my hair, it has been lost in the passage of time. While other kids saved their nickels and dimes for candy, I saved mine for Coney Island Coneys." That was in response to our mention in one of the Korner's about that famous landmark restaurant in Boone, southeast corner of Eighth and Keeler, those many years ago.
A pair of items stood out to this reader from the most recent meeting minutes of the Boone County Historical Society. (1) Elevator repair has been completed and (2) it was suggested that an event be held in Moingona when the existing depot there is demolished. Perhaps more information will be issued when plans are formalized.
Late congrats on the success of the Boone Campus DMACC softball team which has AGAIN completed an outstanding season. After a first round win in the National tournament, the Bears were eliminated via a pair of season-ending losses. Even then, they finished with a final record of 56-7 and their appearance at the National tourney was their 11th straight. Wow!!
Along that same line, you may remember that prior to the start of that National tourney I had moaned about how hard it seemed to get information about the big event. Many thanks to Tom Hokel, BHS-65, who used various tools at his disposal to provide more info than I could possibly use. Tom also indicated his granddaughter twins, Kate and Morgan Wood, have received division III softball scholarships and will be attending Concordia University of Chicago in August. Thanks again Tom.
John Kueck, BHS-61, keeps us informed about Pete Kostelnick's running adventures. Pete, BHS-2005, of course, became a real big name in the running world when he took that long journey across the entire country from West coast to the East coast and did it in national record time. Of course, he's had many other outstanding nationwide ultra-distance victories as well.
Pete, himself, reported, "I came into the year with high expectations, but they were lower than any other year as I tried to prove to myself that I could still tackle some tough ultra-distance events after being in a bad car accident in late 2023 that stuck me in a wheelchair for two months. I backed off to continue healing and get my strength back and I'm proud of what is now happening. I ran 11 more laps (47.8 miles vs 44.4 miles) at the Hotfoot Hamster six hour this year than I did pre-accident two years ago. And Lindsay ran a course record, while we both hit the top six hour race distance in the USA so far this year."
Finally, a couple reminders:
(1) Kathy Ferry Good, BHS-64, who serves as Senior Director of the DeWolf Innovation Center and Family Caregivers Center of Mercy in Cedar Rapids, will be interviewed on the Iowa Life television show on Iowa Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) on Tuesday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m.. The program will be about the challenges of caregiving in Iowa.
(2) On Saturday, June 21, there will be a service at Linwood Park for former Boone resident, Naomi (Noni) Fern Folsom Givens, BHS-45, at 1 p.m..

Dick Musser, BHS-64, wrote a neat story about John's recruiting persistence. One of John's top career recruits was Corey Koskie who had a short but very successful Major League baseball career. He played from 1998-2004 for the Minnesota Twins, Milwaukee Brewers and Toronto Blue Jays. Plagued by and eventually, retired after some serious injuries, he had a very productive career, a batting average of .275 with 124 home runs and 506 runs-batted-in.
A native of Montreal and member of the Canadian Hall of Fame, his favorite sports were volleyball and hockey in his younger years. Baseball time was just a "fill in."
Koskie said that John started calling him, "every day until I finally gave in and came to Boone/DMACC." He added that he thought the calls to him were really "special," until I found out that John called "every prospect, every day.""

Some time back I, the Kornerman, made Korner viewers aware of a great book written by Kathy Ferry Good, BHS-64.
Kathy, who was a BHS intern at the Boone News Republican when I was employed there those many years ago is now the Senior Director of the DeWolf Innovation Center and Family Caregivers Center in Cedar Rapids.
Kathy informs that a crew from Iowa PBS taped an interview Christy Nebbe conducted with her on the topic of family caregiving. This will be featured on an upcoming edition of Iowa Life on PBS. In early May, the PBS crew was on hand to interview Kathy about the challenges of ageing and dementia caregiving in Iowa. And now, that show will be seen (write this on your calendar) at 6:30 p.m. on June 24, 2025 on PBS.
We had written earlier in the Korner about a book, "My World Wore a Bow Tie" Kathy had written sharing her experiences as a caregiver for her husband, Dave, through his illness and death.

Another addition to your calendar: Her daughter, Janelle Henry, informs us that her mother's memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on June 21, at Linwood Cemetery. Her mother, Naomi (Noni) Fern Folsom Givens, 97, passed away in March in Virginia.
While we're at it.....a couple things on the horizon next week......the first Municipal Band Concert of the new season will be at McHose on Wednesday and on Thursday, May 29, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our Korner friend, Vern Modeland, BHS-50. He'll celebrate 93 years.

GO DMACC BEARS
One of the Boone Communities best kept secrets are Boone Campus, Des Moines Area Community College athletics, especially women's softball at this time of year.
Two old buddies of the Kornerman, Eric Ver Helst, the Bears Sports Information Director, and Ryan Wendt, the longtime KWBG Sports Director, absolutely do the best they can of providing information about DMACC softball and other Bear athletic events to Boone area residents but there never seems to be any mention of PRINTED material in our Boone News Republican? or anywhere beyond. And that's a damn shame.
I, the Kornerman, am here to tell you, in print, what limited knowledge I can find about the National Junior College Division II Softball World Series which runs from May 20-24 in Oxford, Alabama. And in all honesty, after spending way too much time in attempting to corral some info, I'm falling way short. I couldn't even find any details in searching the Oxford, Alabama area newspapers.
This World Series is a big, big event but doesn't seem to receive the treatment it should.
I do know that it appears the Bears softball team is seeded fourth in the 20-team field and would play an opening second round game, Tuesday, May 20, at 11 a.m. against the winner of an earlier game?.
I can also tell you that the Boone Campus team, coached by Bob Ligouri, has a 2025 season record of 55-5, which included a 26-2 conference mark. The Bears, of course, have been consistent national contenders in softball in recent years and, obviously, have another outstanding team.
A roster of 34 players includes one former Toreador player, freshman Erin Ades, and the team boasts a .408 batting average with 527 runs scored and 70 (that's seventy) home runs in their 60 games.
Thana Heller, Bailey Richards and Gary Gorman are assistant coaches and John Wilkinson is in charge of player development.
I wish I could tell you more about this prestigious national event but numerous facts and figures were hard to find.
Although DMACC came along after my time, I was proud of the degree I earned from its predecessor, Boone Junior College, and I still like to claim the school as mine. The fact the college remains in Boone and is an important part of the community adds to my devotion.

THE DEATH OF MY BOSS, BERNIE SAGGAU
The Kornerman's 30-year boss has passed.
Bernie Saggau, just a few days shy of his 97th birthday, died in Sarasota, Florida, May 10, 2025.
The Saggau family came to Boone in the early 1960's when Bernie accepted a job offer from Executive Secretary Lyle T. Quinn to join the staff of the Iowa Boys High School Athletic Association. Initially named an Assistant to the Executive Secretary on October 14, 1963, he was promoted to Executive Secretary on September 9, 1967. Mr. Quinn had passed away on July 30 of 1967.
When the Saggau's came to Boone, I was in the midst of a 25-year hobby of coaching Boone Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball teams. In 1962, I managed a Ruth All-Star team that won State and Regional championships and was one of just eight Ruth teams in the world to compete in the Ruth World Series in Bridgeton, New Jersey.
In addition, Bernie's oldest son, Jeff, was a member of one of my Babe Ruth teams. Bernie also quickly became aware of the high school sports broadcasting I did on KWBG radio and the stories on high school athletic events I authored for the Boone News Republican.
I believe Bernie was impressed by this devotion I had for youth sports activities and the fact that I had both radio and newspaper work backgrounds. The result was an invitation to join the IHSAA staff. On April 19, 1971, I joined the IHSAA staff as the Association "voice" and spokesperson, as well as guiding the Association's large printing operation. That relationship continued for 30 years until my retirement in 2000.
I'll never forget, "Mo, I'd like to have you join our IHSAA staff and the starting yearly salary will be $11.000," he said. In that time period, believe me, that much money was "way out of reach" for small town radio announcers and newspaper sports editors.
HOWEVER, the truth is that his offer was one of the few Bernie Saggau mistakes I ever witnessed. Had he said, "Mo, I'd like to have you join our IHSAA staff but I can't offer you any salary," Believe me, I would have jumped for joy and accepted anyway. I never mentioned that to him, that he had made an $11.000 mistake in hiring me and then, even paying me as well.
Being an ultimate sports fan, plus a staunch admirer and supporter of the work of the IHSAA, plus the fact this prestigious organization was an integral part of my home town made his offer an immediate "no brainer." That tremendous bump in pay was an unexpected bonus.
The opportunity I had to join the IHSAA was the first of many such "gifts" that Bernie Saggau accorded me and my family. I'm sure it was his close connection with National Federation leaders that provided me with the chance, in the 1980's, to become the Master of Ceremonies for the National Sports Hall of Fame ceremonies held at various U.S. locations each July.
It gave me an opportunity to hob-not with and induct some of the nation's greatest athletes of that 1970's/80's era into that Hall of Fame.....John Wooden, Tom Landry, Arnold Palmer, Bart Starr, Paul Hornung....and many others. Yes, I was star struck.
I apparently did a decent job as I was invited to repeat as M.C. seven consecutive additional years.
The last time I talked with Bernie was four or five weeks before his passing. He called me and we had a good conversation and, of course, I showered him with "thank you's" again for all the wonderful opportunities he had provided me and my family.......whether earned or not.
He's gone now but the wonderful memories and gratitude will remain forever so, one last time,"Many thanks Boss."

Extra IHSAA news of local interest: The Iowa Boys High School Athletic Association was formed December 28, 1904. A Boone native, Lyle T. Quinn, BHS-25. joined the association as Assistant Secretary February 24, 1940, and then was appointed Manager of the Association March 11, 1941. In November of 1941, he became the permanent Executive Secretary of the IHSAA.
Originally, the Association office and small staff were in Des Moines but it is reported that Mr. Quinn, who lived in Boone, was tired of the daily drive to Des Moines so he moved the entire office to
Boone on January 29, 1944.
In Boone, the Association occupied the building at the northeast corner of Eighth and Keeler streets. Currently that building houses the Doran Law Firm. In 1975, the Association build the building on South Story Street which still serves as the home base for the organization.
The 2025 IHSAA staff is comprised of Executive Director Tom Keating, four Assistant Directors, six office and administrative staff members and three other department directors (communications, finance and office).
The Iowa High School Association is also located in the South Story facility. It performs the same duties for Iowa High School Music students as the IHSAA provides for boys athletic participants. Thad Driskell is the Director of the Music Association.

A COACH REMEMBERED
We've been a small group, seldom more than seven, that met early mornings at McDonald's for a bit of chit-chat. Then COVID hit and several life changes resulted.
McDonald's operating schedule changed and our group moved to the Kelley's garage where it continues today......each Tuesday at 1 p.m..
We lost one of our regulars last week. The "coach," John Smith, 87, passed away rather quickly from a blood disorder. John had battled and partially won a form of cancer that struck a few years ago but had been a regular participant at our meetings ever since, seldom showing any distress.
Although he had retired from his baseball duties at Boone Campus, DMACC a few years back, this National Hall of Famer's achievements were well documented and admired......over 700 wins, over 600 young participants, over 80 players good enough to sign professional contracts and three who earned Major League promotions. As his reputation grew through the years, young players from many different locales in this country and even outside our borders came to Boone, Iowa to seek his guidance......and got it, full measure.
I, the Kornerman, have never understood why the Bears baseball diamond wasn't tabbed with great emphasis, "John S. Smith Field." There is a small plaque in his honor but I never felt that was near enough of a tribute to what he gave, for many successful years, to his program, those young men lucky enough to be involved, his college and his community.
John always reminded that he was a Dakota boy who loved his family, church and baseball above all else. He loved dancing with Connie, all sports, especially ISU, and following the major horse races each year. And politics? Well, let's not get into that. He definitely did have his opinions.
I know I speak for our entire group when I say, "we're hurting," his absence will be greatly missed. John was a strong advocate for whatever he believed in and had no fear in expressing those beliefs. Agreed or not, we admired his stance and his willingness to share his thoughts.
And let's not forget, John was not just a successful coach and family man, he was an educator who took as much pride in his classroom student's success as his baseball player's success. Just like all great hitters, he sprayed his success to all fields with discipline, dedication and devotion.
